Reading, PA - Trenton snapped its six game winless streak with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Atlantic Division leading Reading Royals Monday afternoon at Sovereign Center. Shane Connelly stopped 33 of 34 Reading shots, and three of five in the shootout, to earn his first win in a Devils uniform. For the second time this season Trenton held an opponent to only one goal, thanks in part to an increase in blocked shots and an impressive effort between the pipes from Connelly.

After a scoreless first period, Trenton broke through with a power-play goal 6:46 into the second. With several Devils around the net mouth, Kory Nagy forced the puck past goalie Michael Hutchinson for a 1-0 Trenton lead. The Devils were more aggressive offensively in the second, firing 13 shots on Hutchinson.

Reading tied the game with a power-play goal of its own at 6:53 of the third. Cody Wild picked up the goal after taking a centering feed from Reading’s leading scorer, Ben Gordon.

After playing a scoreless remainder of the third period and five minutes of overtime still tied 1-1, Jeff Prough, Ryan Ginand and Darcy Zajac beat Huthcinson in the final three rounds of shootout, while Connelly stopped three of Reading’s five shooters to secure the win.

Atlantic City’s legendary Boardwalk Hall hosts the second of five Devils’ affiliate games this season, Sunday, January 23 at 4 p.m. when the Trenton Devils face the Wheeling Nailers. It is Trenton’s only game at Boardwalk Hall this season and the first for Trenton since facing the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies (now the Stockton Thunder) in the 2005 Kelly Cup Playoffs.

Individual ticket prices for Sunday’s game are $26 for first two rows on the glass, $21 for the lower bowl and $16 for the upper bowl. A 4-pack for the upper bowl at $65 includes 4 tickets, 4 hot dogs & 4 sodas, and must be purchased in advance. Tickets can be purchased at the Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations, by calling 800-736-1420 or at www.ticketmaster.com.

Before the start of the game, fans will have an opportunity to meet NJ Devils alum Grant Marshall. The former right-winger has a remarkable story of recovery from a severe neck injury he suffered while playing junior hockey. Not only did he return to play hockey, but he became a two-time Stanley Cup Champion in the NHL. He’s now a special assignment coach for the Devils and often works with Trenton’s players. Make sure to arrive early to meet Grant in person and get his autograph. Doors open at 3 p.m.

NAILERS OPEN 3-GAME SET WITH 4-3 VICTORY

Johnstown, PA – The Wheeling Nailers erased Devils’ leads twice Friday in Johnstown, taking their first lead midway through the second period and sinking Trenton for the fifth time in six meetings this season. Goals from Casey Pierro-Zabotel and Kelly Miller less than three minutes apart in the second period helped lift Wheeling to its fifth victory in the last six contests, while goaltender Patrick Killeen made 34 saves.

Beginning a three-game, three-night, three-city series with the Nailers, the Devils aimed to replicate the effort displayed Monday in Reading: a defensive minded 2-1 shootout victory over the Royals. With noticeable energy in the opening minutes, Trenton took an early lead with Jeremy Akeson’s seventh goal of the season at 2:28 of the

first. Setup by Jordon Southorn’s third assist of the season, Akeson’s blast on the rush from the left wing circle all but erased the memory of Trenton’s 4-1 debacle vs. Wheeling from January 12.

The Nailers never allowed the Devils to take full control in the first, sustained early pressure, and eventually answered 19 seconds into their first power play. Defenseman Dan Henningson scored from the backdoor on a backhand feed from the left wing by Zabotel. Henningson’s fourth of the season tied the score, 1-1.

Defenseman Brad Miller, returning to the Trenton lineup after a brief stint on injured reserve, scored his first goal since December 29 to put the Devils back on top, 2-1, four minutes into the second. Seconds after beginning a four-on-four, Miller made an aggressive individual effort toward the net for the score with Tony Zancanaro earning the helper, his 12th point of the year.

The lead slipped away from Trenton again minutes later with a perfectly timed pass from Mike Gershon to Zabotel coming across the blue line. Goalie Shane Connelly seemed to deny Zabotel’s shot, but the puck was tipped in for Zabotel’s second point of the night and a 2-2 tie.

Wheeling’s go-ahead goal also was born from timing, as Kelly Miller hopped out of the penalty box just as Andy Thomas was skating by with the puck after a fruitless Devils’ power play. Miller made the steal and cruised toward the net unabated and beat Connelly for Wheeling’s first lead, 3-2, at 9:01 of the second.

Before the second period came to a close, Myles Stoesz had a run-in with Miller, and each player took roughing penalties: Stoesz a double minor and 10-minute misconduct, and Miller a minor.

The Devils couldn’t find their offensive rhythm in the third, and a comeback chance was derailed when Mikael Bedard made it 4-2 Wheeling in the last five minutes of regulation. Trevor Kell got the Devils within 4-3 with one second left, but the Devils ran out of time.

Trenton hosts Wheeling Saturday in Trenton at 7 p.m. and in Atlantic City Sunday at 4 p.m.

CONNELLY HALTS ROYALS

Goaltender Shane Connelly carried the Devils through the first period, stopping all 13 shots he faced.

Wheeling struck twice in the second period Friday night en route to a 4-3 win over the Devils.

Tonight, the Trenton celebrates the United States Armed Forces with Military Appreciation Night as the Devils take on the Nailers in the seventh of 11 meeting between the clubs this season, with six of the eleven matchups slated for the month of January. Winning five of the first six with Trenton, Wheeling has a record of 22-15-0-2, putting the Nailers seven points ahead of the Cincinnati Cyclones for first place in the North Division.

The Devils’ loss to the Nailers Friday was Trenton’s eighth loss in its last 10 games, with the Devils’ record now standing at 14-19-1-3. Tonight’s matchup is the third of what will be six matchups between the teams in an 18-day span, with the squads opposing each other tomorrow afternoon at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall before engaging in a two-game set in Wheeling and Johnstown, PA next weekend.

Trenton will be without forward Jeff Prough, as the fomer Brown University forward was recalled to AHL Albany Saturday afternoon. The Devils leading scorer the last two seasons has been the only player to appear in all of Trenton’s games this season. He has 26 points this season (13g, 13a), the third best mark on the team.

Trenton’s defense got a boost Friday with both Brad Miller and Justin Coutu activated from injured reserve. On Monday, defenseman Jordon Southorn returned from five weeks on injured reserve and notched his third assist of the season Friday in Wheeling. Trenton takes on Wheeling tonight for the third of six times in the month of January.

Saturday night’s game is expected to feature Jeff Lerg’s return to the net for Trenton. Due to a callup to Albany and subsequent injury, Lerg has been held out of action with Trenton since the week of Thanksgiving, when he started both games in a two-game set with the tied-for-first place Florida Everblades at Germain Arena. Of the four goaltenders the Devils have used this season, Lerg’s .625 winning percentage is tops, with the former Michigan State Spartan having gone 5-3, with a 3.42 goals against average and .888 save percentage.

This is Lerg’s second pro season, after the 5’6, 155-lb. goaltender started two games for Trenton last year after playing four seasons with Michigan State (CCHA). Lerg is in the top-10 all-time at Michigan State for save percentage, goals-against average, career shutouts, and wins. Additionally, Lerg was the starting goaltender on Michigan State’s 2007 National Championship team, and his 1.62 career GAA in the NCAA Tournament (eight games) is sixth best in NCAA history.
