TRENTON DEVILS (20-28-1-3, 44pts) vs WHEELING NAILERS (29-20-0-3, 61pts) Game 53 ◦ Sunday, February 20, 2011 ◦ 4:00 p.m. ◦ Sun National Bank Center, Trenton, NJ

TRENTON POWER PLAY PUNISHES ELMIRA, 3-2

Trenton, NJ – Ryan Ginand scored two of Trenton’s three power play goals, including the game-winning score early in the third period, as the Trenton Devils defeated the Elmira Jackals, 3-2, Saturday at Sun National Bank Center. Jeff Lerg stopped 36 shots in his first win since January 28 in Toledo, as the Devils won for the second time in three meetings with the Jackals this week.

Elmira’s Michael Dubuc got the scoring started 7:40 into the first period by beating Lerg with a wrist shot into the top corner of the net. Dubuc also led the Jackals with seven shots on goal in the game but managed just the one goal and captured third star honors despite his team’s loss.

Immediately following Elmira’s goal, Harry Young, playing his first home game for Trenton, dropped the gloves with Josh Brittain, effectively canceling any momentum the Jackals might have gained by their opening score.

Ginand capitalized for Trenton on a power play five minutes later. The Milford, MA native got assists from his newest power play linemates, Dan Charleston and Matt Vokes, to tie the game 1-1. Brad Miller and Trevor Kell were the blueliners on the man-advantage, completing a newly assembled unit that has produced three power play goals this week.

The Devils took hold of Saturday’s contest in the second period, peppering Marco Cousineau with 18 shots in the frame after putting only three shots on him in Friday’s second period. Utilizing another power play, Jeremy Akeson gave the Devils a 2-1 lead at 13:26, beating Cousineau with a low wrist shot from a bad angle along the right goal line. It was the second goal in as many games for Akeson and his ninth score of the season. Tony Zancanaro and Dave Leaderer picked up the helpers on the second of three power play strikes by Trenton.

After killing off the remaining 1:45 of a Taylor Vickorek high-sticking double minor to start the third, Trenton got another power play chance thanks to an interference call against Matt Krug. Sustained pressure from the power play unit that produced the Devils’ first score clicked again. Ginand picked up a rebound off a Vokes shot in the slot and deked Cousineau out of position before burying a backhand shot to extend the Devils lead to 3-1. Vokes and Charleston again earned assists on Ginand’s team-leading 23rd goal of the season.

Down by two goals and pressing to get the game back within reach, Dale Mahovsky scored his first goal of the season by finishing off a crisp feed from Tristin Llewellyn at 7:38 of the third, but Elmira’s league leading offense failed to complete the comeback. Elmira finished 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Devils were 3-for-6.

With the win, Trenton moves to 20-28-1-3 with 44 points, and are eight points back of the Toledo Walleye who took over the eighth and final playoff spot Saturday, thanks to a shootout win over Kalamazoo. Elmira remains tied with Gwinnett with 51 points, one point behind Toledo. The Devils return to the ice Sunday at 4 p.m. against the North Division-leading Wheeling Nailers.

#6 Harry Young fighting with Josh Brittain in his first home game for Trenton.

NAILERS FALL SHORT IN READING, 3-1Reading, PA – Chris Blight scored twice to help lead the Reading Royals to a 3-1 victory over the Wheeling Nailers at the Sovereign Center Saturday night. Despite the loss, the Nailers maintain a six-point lead in the North Division.

After playing 65 minutes of scoreless hockey last night, it took nearly 14 minutes for the scoreless streak to be broken between the two clubs. Reading’s Todd Perry stole the puck at the blue line, and fired a slapshot from the circle past Nailers goaltender Patrick Killeen to give the Royals a 1-0 lead at the end of one period.

The Nailers tied the game at 9:03 of the second period. Moments after exiting the penalty box for a cross-checking penalty, Nailers defenseman Alex Grant grabbed the puck at the circle and hurled a backhand shot through the five-hole of Royals goaltender Matt Dalton. The goal was the first of the season for Grant. The game remained tied at one after two periods.

Reading turned up the heat late in the third and eventually converted on a goal by Chris Blight who fired a wrist shot on the glove side past Killeen to give the Royals the 2-1 lead with 4:34 remaining. Wheeling rolled the dice and pulled Killeen for the extra attacker, but Blight would take the puck in the neutral zone and fire it into the empty net to seal the 3-1 victory. Reading outshot Wheeling 35-28 in the game.

For both the Devils and Nailers, their play against each other has defined where they sit in the standings.

The Nailers, leading the North Division by six points, have won nine of 10 games from the Devils. Meanwhile, Trenton is eight points out of the final playoff position, but would be tied for eighth had the Devils been able to manage just a split of the 10 prior games with Wheeling.

But while it may seem that the Nailers have completely owned their games against the Devils, Trenton as actually out-shot Wheeling in eight of the first 10 meetings. However, the Nailers have gotten stellar goaltending in the series, and both of their current goalies, Patrick Killeen and Peter Delmas, have undefeated 4-0-0 records against the Devils.

The Nailers have gotten the better of the Devils due to timely scoring, and some tremendous individual performances by their top offensive players. Wheeling has for players who average more than a point-per-game in the season series (Peterson, Street, Pierro-Zabotel, Bedard), however Bedard is the only one expected to be in the lineup Sunday, due to AHL call-ups and injuries.

With Wheeling without some of its top players and its lead on Kalamazoo shrinking in the North Division, not only do the Devils have a chance to throw a monkey-wrench into some of Wheeling’s playoff plans, but Trenton can move to within six points of a playoff position itself with a win.

After today, Trenton and Wheeling will not meet again in 2010-11, barring a matchup in the Kelly Cup playoffs.

TRENTON DEVILS (20-28-1-3, 44pts) vs WHEELING NAILERS (29-20-0-3, 61pts) Game 53 ◦ Sunday, February 20, 2011 ◦ 4:00 p.m. ◦ Sun National Bank Center, Trenton, NJ

The Devils and Nailers play the final game of their 11-game series today, and Wheeling has won nine of the first 10. The Nailers’ dominance over the Devils includes six straight wins in January, and an 11-4-0-0 record in the all-time head-to-head series. However, the Nailers are struggling lately, and have lost four of their last five games. One of the reasons for Wheeling’s struggles has been the call-ups of its two leading scorers, Ben Street, and Nick Peterson, to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Although the Nailers are scuffling, they’ve been able to maintain their position atop the North Division, and have a record of 29-20-0-3.

The Nailers add four key players for Saturday’s game, all of whom have recently been playing at the AHL level. Forwards David Marshall, Tyler Murovich, Andrew Orpik, Ryan Schnell have all been sent to Wheeling from their AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins.

Saturday marked the home debut for Devils defenseman Harry Young who was assigned from Albany to Trenton Friday. Meanwhile, forward Darcy Zajac was promoted to Albany for the second time this season.

Goaltender Jeff Lerg returned from Albany to Trenton Wednesday, appeared in relief of Shane Connelly Friday night, and started Saturday vs. Elmira. Trenton players in Albany are goaltender Dave Caruso, defenseman Andy Thomas, and forwards Jeff Prough and J.S. Berube. #9 Trevor Kell leads the Devils against the Nailers with nine points (4g, 5a) in seven games.

Trenton Devils players visited the Quaker Bridge Mall Build-A-Bear Workshop® earlier this month to make their own furry friends to be auctioned off for charity. This year marks the sixth straight season that Trenton has teamed up with Build-A-Bear Workshop®.

At left, Matt Vokes and Scorch display their cuddly creations. Each Devils player created a unique critter, complete with outfits, accessories, and birth certificates.

The silent auction began during Saturday’s game, and continues today on the SunCenter concourse near section 116. The auction will conclude at the end of the second intermission during Sunday’s game. Winners of the bears may take them home today, or pick up at a later date.

All proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity – Trenton Area, which was founded in July 1986 with the mission of building affordable, quality homes in the East Trenton area. With the help of thousands of volunteers Habitat-Trenton has built over 80 new homes in Trenton.

SCOUTING THE NAILERS* The Nailers are in first place of the Eastern Conference’s North

Division, and have a 29-20-0-3 record. Wheeling’s record includes nine wins in 10 tries against Trenton, although the Nailers are just 4-5-0-1 in their last 10 games.

* Wheeling’s offense fourth in the ECHL, and with 177 tallies in 52 games, the Nailers average 3.40 goals-per-game. Wheeling is however without its two leading scorers, Nick Peterson and Ben Street, who have both been called up to AHL-Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. With Nick Peterson and Ben Street both in the AHL, the Nailers have struggled to score, and only have four goals in the last four games. In Peterson’s and Street’s absences, the Nailers only have four goals in their last four games.

* Defensively, the Nailers are second in the Eastern Conference, and fifth in the ECHL, allowing 2.87 goals-per-game. Patrick Killeen has been the Nailers’ best goalie, and he is 17-11-2 this season, and 4-0-0 against the Devils. Wheeling’s other goalie, Peter Delmas, is 8-2-0, with a 2.20 goals-against average and .928 save percentage, after he started the season in junior hockey as a member of the QMJHL’s Halifax Mooseheads.

* At even strength, the Nailers are plus-17, scoring 121, and giving up 104 goals-against.

* Although Wheeling’s power play has been shut out on its last six chances, it still ranks third in the ECHL at 19.9%. The Nailers have 49 goals in 246 power-play chances overall, and they’ve scored on eight of their last 24 chances against Trenton (33.3%)

* Wheeling has killed off 222-of-259 PP chances against them (85.7), which is second best in the ECHL. The Nailers’ PK has been going strong lately, and hasn’t been scored upon in the last two games.

SCOUTING THE DEVILS* The Devils enter Sunday with a record of 20-28-1-3, which puts them

third in the Atlantic Division, and eight points behind the Toledo Walleye for the Eastern Conference’s final playoff position.

* Trenton has scored 164 goals in 52 games, and its average of 3.15 goals-per-game ranks 11th in the ECHL. The Devils’ hottest trio has been a line consisted of Matt Vokes, Ryan Ginand and Dan Charleston. Each member of the line had two points last night against Elmira, and they’ve combined for 16 points in the last three games since getting assembled.

* Defensively, Trenton ranks 16th in the league, and has allowed 189 goals in 52 games (3.63 goals-per-game). Although Shane Connelly has gotten most of the starts in goal for Trenton lately, Jeff Lerg made 36 saves on 38 shots as the winning goalie last night, in his first start for Trenton since February 4.

* At even strength, the Devils are minus-20, scoring 112 times and allowing 132 goals.

* The Devils’ power play has only scored twice its last 17 chances, and at 17.3%, ranks 13th in the league.

* Trenton’s PK ranks 16th at 79.8%, and has given up PP strikes in each of the last five games.

* One of the main reasons for Trenton’s win last night was its work on the power-play. The Devils went 3-of-6 against the Jackals, snapping out of a funk on which they had only two PP goals in their prior 17 chances. For the season, Trenton is 11th in the league on the man-advantage, functioning at 17.8%.

* Trenton’s penalty killers eliminated all three of the Jackals’ chances last night, and improved to 80.3% overall, which is 16th place in the ECHL.
