SCOUTING THE ROYALS

Ben Scrivens has played a majority of the games in goal for the Royals, carrying a record of 4-3 into action Wednesday night. The winner in his ECHL-debut on October 16 at Trenton, the Spruce Grove, AB native has posted a .931 save percentage and 2.46 goals-against-average so far this season.

Goaltender Adam Courchaine was reassigned by the Boston Bruins to the ECHL’s Alaska Aces October 22, after allowing four goals in 7:23 against Trenton on October 17, in his only appearance in a Royals uniform. Goaltender Matt Dalton replaces Courchaine on Reading’s roster and has a 3-2 record with a 3.42 goals-against-average and 0.898 save percentage in five games played for the Royals this season.

-The Royals skate into Trenton having won their last four games and six of their last seven. With a record of 7-5-0-0, Reading is tied for sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

- Matt Caruana leads team in goals and points with 15 points (1g, 5a).

- Ben Gordon and Andrew Sarauer hold the team lead in assists with 10.

- Alain Goulet leads Reading defensemen in scoring with two goals and four assists.

-Jared Ross and Ben Gordon are tied for lead with plus-8

-Olivier Labelle has the most penalty minutes with 48.

DEVILS GO 1-1 ON SECOND ROADTRIP The Trenton Devils played two road games last week, defeating the Wheeling Nailers, 5-3, at the War Memorial in Johnstown, PA Friday night and falling to the Elmira Jackals, 5-4, at First Arena in Elmira Saturday night. The Devils skate into Week 6 with a record of 4-4-0-1, having played fewer games than any team in the ECHL.

Game 08: Devils Hammer Nailers, 5-3, in JohnstownThe Devils fell behind the Nailers in the first period when Hunter Bishop

redirected a centering feed from Andy Lord past Devils goaltender Jeff Lerg to give Wheeling the edge at 4:45. The Devils quickly responded with Jeff Prough scoring twice in a span of 7:54 to give Trenton its first lead. On Prough’s first goal, the 5’10, 170 lb. forward won a foot-race to a rebound and flicked a knuckling puck toward the net and past Modig to tie the score. On the go-ahead score, Dan Charleston, who assisted on both of Prough’s first period markers, started the play with nifty stickhandling below the end line, and then made a sharp feed to Prough in front, who deked and shot from the backhand to beat Modig for his fifth finisher of the season.

Wheeling drew even with a shorthanded goal in the second period, but the game didn’t stay tied for long as J.S. Berube and Matt Lombardi set up defenseman Gord Burnett’s first-career ECHL goal to give Trenton a 3-2 lead at 16:48. Kory Nagy then made the score 4-2 at 6:41 of the third period, but Wheeling pulled back within one goal again thanks to their power play, with 10:36 remaining in regulation.

The Devils penalty kill stopped a late Wheeling power play and created a scoring chance of its own with Trevor Kell dishing the puck off to Justin Coutu, who scored his first goal of the season from the high slot to make the score 5-3 late in the third period. A penalty against Wheeling negated their remaining power play time and the Devils held on for Jeff Lerg, who got his third win of the season, turning away 29 of 32 shots.

Game 09: Devils Drop Heartbreaker, 5-4, in ElmiraThe Devils’ Jeremy Akeson gave Trenton the early lead, beating Zane

Kalemba, 4:45 into the first period. The score became 2-0 2:39 later when Matt Lombardi out-muscled an Elmira defenseman in front of the net, and scored his third goal of the season, assisted by Dan Charleston and Dave Leaderer. Before the first period ended, though, the Jackals cut Trenton’s lead to 2-1 when Patrick Coulombe beat Dave Caruso at 12:54.

With the score 2-1, the heated division rivals began embracing a much chippier style of play in a penalty-filled second period. After Martin Nolet was sent off for cross-checking at 7:48, Trenton’s penalty kill rose to the occasion, with Trevor Kell scoring the Devils’ third shorthanded goal of

the season, smacking a shot through Kalemba on a breakaway to give the Devils a 3-1 lead. The Jackals answered back with the game’s next two goals, with Patrick Coulombe getting his second of the night at 9:30 to make the score 3-2, and Justin Donati tying the game with his seventh of the season at 11:33 of the second.

The Devils re-claimed the lead when Dan Charleston made the score 4-3 with 4:49 remaining in the second. Charleston’s first of the season came on the power play after Elmira had put themselves shorthanded by taking a bench minor for unsportsmanlike conduct at 12:31 when water bottles were thrown from the Jackals bench onto the ice in protest of a disallowed goal just seconds before which could have given Elmira a one-goal lead. Instead, the Jackals had to fight from behind again, once again tying the game at 8:07 of the hird period when Michael Dubuc struck for his ECHL-leading 11th goal. The Jackals went ahead when Oren Eizenman beat Caruso on Elmira’s 47th shot with 5:23 remaining for the eventual game-winning goal, as the Jackals went on to win, 5-4.

Defenseman Dave Leaderer returned to the Trenton lineup Saturday in Elmira.

In his third year with the Trenton Devils, defenseman Gord Burnett scored his first-career ECHL goal last Friday night in Johnstown, PA as part of a 5-3 Devils win over the Wheeling Nailers. In total, the Regina, Saskatchewan native has played 182 professional games between Trenton, Phoenix (ECHL), Elmira (ECHL), Utah (ECHL) and Youngstown (CHL), and 104 games for St. Scholastica College (NCHA).

Q: What was your favorite NHL team growing up? Favorite player?A: I grew up in western Canada

in the ‘80s, so it was hard not to root for the Oilers with the great teams they had in those years. And even though there are probably a ton of kids who would say the same thing and I now it’s a little cliché, I’d have to say that my favorite player was Wayne Gretzky.

Q: What type of music do you like to listen to before games?A: Last Friday before our game in Johnstown, we listened to The Tragically Hip in the locker room and I kind of liked that. Good Canadian band and we won that night. So maybe The Tragically Hip can be good luck for us.

Q: If there was a movie about your life, who would play you?A: I’d have to say Tom Cruise. Top Gun is one of my top five favorite movies.

Q: Favorite vacation spot?A: My parents have a place on a lake a few minutes outside of Regina, SK where I’m from that’s very relaxing to go to. There’s some good fishing up there and it’s nice too because when I’m there, I’m with my family.

Q: If you could meet any three people, alive or dead, who would they be?A: First, I’d have to go with Wayne Gretzky. My rookie year, I saw him in the hallway at one of our practices and I was too scared to really talk to him. I think I just said “hi” or something like that and that was it. So I’d definitely like to actually meet and have a real conversation Wayne Gretzky. Second, St. Scholastica because I attended The College of St. Scholastica in Minnesota. She was a Benedictine saint who lived 1500 years ago but had a great influence on my education. Third would definitely be my great-grandfather who passed away before I was born. He came across the ocean and was a farmer, settling our family in western Canada. I’m sure I could learn a thing or two about hard work and my family roots from him.

Q: What was your first car?A: It was a black ’86 Chevy Cavalier. The shocks on it were gone, it had a ton of rust, but it ran. My grandfather found it in the paper and I got it for under $1000. He thought it would be a good idea to spray paint the rust – that was a joke. It was the kind of car that my sister would rather walk someplace than get a ride with me. One time she was forced to get a ride from me and she slid the passenger seat back all the way down so she wouldn’t be seen in it. But it got me to hockey practice and that’s all that mattered to me.

Page 4: Devils Extra 2010_11_17 Game 10 vs Reading

The Trenton Devils oppose their division rivals, the Reading Royals, for the third time this season Wednesday at the Sun National Bank Center.

The Royals skate into Trenton on a four-game winning streak with a record of 7-5-0-0, which places them in second place of the Atlantic Division and tied for sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Only the Cincinnati Cyclones (unbeaten in 7) and Stockton Thunder (unbeaten in 10) have longer unbeaten streaks than the Royals, who swept a two-game series against the South Carolina Stingrays at home last weekend.

During the Royals four-game winning streak, goaltending duties have been split by Ben Scrivens and Matt Dalton. Dalton started the season with Providence (AHL) and joined Reading in mid-October after goaltender Adam Courchaine was recalled by the Boston Bruins and subsequently loanded to Alaska (ECHL) October 22 after allowing four goals in 7:23 October 17 at Trenton, in the only game he played for Reading this season. In his second season wtih Reading, Dalton has a 3-2 record with a 3.42 goals-against-average and 0.898 save percentage in five games played while Ben Scrivens is 4-3 with a .931 save percentage and 2.46 goals-against-average, having won his ECHL-debut against Trenton in the season-opener October 16.

On the offensive side of the puck, Reading is led in scoring by Matt Caruana whose 15 points (10g, 5a) place him eighth in the ECHL. “We have to be aware of their skill,” said head coach Kevin Dean. “They have some guys like (Ben) Gordon, (Andrew) Sarauer, (Matt) Caruana and (Olivier) Labelle who have good skill that you have to be aware of on the ice.” Ben Gordon (3g, 10a), Andrew Sarauer (3g, 10a) and Ryan Cruthers (6g, 6a) are also among the Top-20 in league scoring as the Royals offense has 41 goals in 12 games this season.

The Devils look to bounce back from a 5-4 loss in Elmira, allowing the Jackals to come from behind late in the game. “We didn’t play the way against them last Saturday that we need to play to be successful,” Dean said. “We were sloppy and they’re a talented team that can make you pay if you don’t have your game together.”

After a 1-1 roadtrip, the Devils return home where they’ve recorded points in four straight games. The Devils have the fewest games played in the ECHL, nine, and are 4-4-0-1 overall, five points fewer than Reading, but also playing three fewer games.

“I want us to initiate the play more,” Dean said about Wednesday’s game. “If we are carrying the play, moving the puck and bumping some guys around, we force them to react to us.”

The Devils will be without their captain and leading scorer Wednesday as Trevor Kell was recalled to AHL-Albany this week along with forward Dan Charleston. Rookie forward J.S. Berube will also not available Wednesday, having been placed on bereavemnet leave earlier in the week. With those losses, Trenton is expected to dress seven defensemen and nine forwards.

The Devils lineup will be helped by the expected return of defenseman Andy Thomas who has missed the last seven games on injured reserve.

“Andy gives us an experienced defenseman that we need,” Dean said. “He’s solid in his own zone and moves the puck well, which should help our forwards also. He’s a big addition back into our lineup.” Thomas last played for the Devils October 17 during the Devils 6-4 win over the Royals He led Trenton with a plus-15 in 71 games last season. Rookie defenseman Jordon Southorn, who last played Friday in Wheeling, is also expected back from injured reserve Wednesday.

Defenseman Andy Thomas, who hasn’t played since Oct. 17, is expected back in the lineup tonight.

Trenton forwards Dan Charleston and Trevor Kell were both recalled from Trenton to the AHL-Albany Devils on Monday.

Charleston, 25, has a goal and five assists in three games for Trenton this season, his second year in the Devils organization. With Trenton in 2009-10, the Oak Forest, IL native compiled 33 points (6g, 27a) in 25 games. Charleston began 2010-11 with Albany but did not make an appearance. In four seasons at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, the 5-8, 180-lb. forward totaled 43 goals and 73 assists for 116 points in 159 games.

Kell, 24, leads Trenton in scoring with 11 points (5g, 6a) through the team’s first nine games in 2010-11. Playing in the Devils organization since 2007, the Thunder Bay, ON native has appeared in 179 regular season ECHL games and 16 AHL games, accumulating 132 points (57g, 75a) with ECHL-Trenton and 9 points (4g, 5a) with AHL-Lowell. The 6-0, 185-lb. forward chipped in five postseason points (3g, 2a) in a seven-game playoff series for Trenton in 2008-09. Named Trenton’s captain at the start of the 2009-10 season, Kell spent four years in the OHL with London and Sarnia, capping his junior career with 73 points (37g, 36a) in 2006-07.

THE DEVILS ROYALS SERIES This week, the Devils will face their division rivals, the Reading Royals, in a two-game, home-and-home series, with the clubs facing off at Sun National Bank Center on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm., and at Sovereign Center in Reading on Friday at 7:05 p.m. The Devils and Royals split a two-game series in Trenton earlier this season, with Reading winning 6-5 in the season-opener October 16, and the Devils rebounding to win 6-4 October 17.

In the first game between the clubs, Reading’s Olivier Labelle and Ryan Cruthers each scored two goals as the Royals never trailed in a game in which they took their first lead 2:46 into the first period. After falling behind, the Devils put up a spirited fight with five different players scoring goals, but they were never able to draw even with the Royals, losing 6-5. Although he surrendered five goals on 36 shots, Royals goaltender Ben Scrivens was good when he had to be as the Cornell alum got his first professional win while Devils goaltender Dave Caruso took the loss by allowing six goals on 32 shots.

In the second game, it was the Devils who led throughout, ambushing

the Royals and chasing goaltender Adam Courchaine to the tune of four unanswered goals in the game’s first 7:13. Although Reading would cut the Devils lead in half still in the first period, the Royals would never get any closer than that as the teams traded four goals after Reading had cut the score to 4-2, with the Devils going on to win 6-4. Trevor Kell was named the game’s first star as the Devils captain contributed two goals and an assist. Jeff Lerg got the win between the pipes in his season debut, as the second-year pro turned aside 36 of 40 shots on the afternoon.

Having split their two contests this season, the clubs met 14 times in 2009-10, with Reading getting the better of Trenton by going 11-3, including three victories that occurred in either overtime or a shootout. The Royals had won the first eight matchups before Trenton rebounded to take three of the final six showdowns. With the Devils finishing the 2009-10 regular season just two points out of the final playoff position, and five points behind Reading for second place in the division, the Devils’ early-season struggles against Reading were an integral reason that Trenton missed the playoffs for only the third time in their 11-year history last season.
