TRENTON DEVILS (13-18-0-3, 29pts) vs TOLEDO WALLEYE (13-18-2-1, 29pts) Game 35 ◦ Saturday, January 15, 2011 ◦ 7:00 p.m. ◦ Sun National Bank Center, Trenton, NJ

Tony Zancanaro is in his fifth season with Trenton, and is the longest tenured player on the current roster. In 209 games with Trenton, the native of Trenton, MI has 43 goals and 73 assists for 116 points. Before turning pro with the Trenton Titans in 2006, the 5’6, 165 lb. forward played four seasons at Providence College (Hockey East) and before that, Zancanaro played junior hockey for the NAHL’s Springfield Spirit, where he was the first player in franchise history to have his jersey number retired.

Q: What was your favorite team growing up? Who was your favorite player?A: Well, I’m from Michigan, so Detroit Red Wings and Steve Yzerman. I also liked Theoren Fleury and the style that he played. Besides hockey, I’m also a big Detroit Tigers baseball fan.

Q: Do you have any nicknames?A: Not really. People call me “Z” sometimes, but that’s about it.

Q: As the longest tenured player with Trenton, what is your favorite memory of your time with the Devils so far?A: Two seasons ago, right after the holidays, we went on an extended winning streak. We won like 10 of 11, or 13 of 15, or something like that. That streak carried us to the playoffs that year and it was so much fun coming to the rink. It was right about this time of year…

Q: You have a twin brother (Brad) who played college hockey at Boston University and professional hockey with the Florida Everblades. Which one of you is a better player?A: Him. I’m being nice.

Q: If you had to make your own dinner, what would you cook for yourself?A: Chicken parmesan.

Q: Seeing as you’re Italian and chose chicken parmesan as your answer for the last question, do you have a particular place you like to go for Italian food?

A: Well, when I went to Providence College, and spend a lot of time in New England. I lived in the North End of Boston in the summer - there are tons of spots and you really can’t go wrong going to any of those. But the best was the food in the Federal Hill area in Providence.

Q: What is your favorite movie? Your favorite hockey movie?A: I really like the new Sherlock Holmes movie with Robert Downey Jr. in it. I thought that was a great movie. And for hockey movie, I’ll go with Slap Shot.

Q: If you could meet three people, alive or dead, who would they be?A: I don’t know if it would be in this order, but I’d meet Cal Ripken Jr., George Washington and Jesus Christ. Can’t forget Jesus.

Q: If you could ask Jesus Christ one question, what would you ask him?A: Just, “Why?”

ELMIRA ERUPTS LATE TO DOWN DEVILS, 4-3

Trenton, NJ - With two late third period goals, the Elmira Jackals defeated the Trenton Devils, 4-3, in the eighth matchup of the season between the two Atlantic Divison rivals. Corey Cowick and Andrew Sweetland scored 2:04 apart with under five minutes left in the third period as the Jackals improved their road record to 9-4-2 and the Devils lost their fifth straight.

The opening period provided plenty of action by both teams as each goaltender was forced to make a few remarkable saves to keep the score tied, 1-1. Jeff Prough opened the scoring with his 13th goal of the season on a power wraparound while falling to the ice. Dave Leaderer and Ryan Ginand picked up helpers on Prough’s goal. The Devils’ lead did not last long as Elmira’s A.J. Perry knotted the score four minutes

later with a nifty forehand-to-backhand deke, finishing off a crisp pass from Brock McBride after Yannick Tifu stole the puck on a failed Devils’ breakout.

Both teams started the second period in similar fashion to the first, playing back and forth but without any scoring. However, midway through the period Elmira’s R.J. Anderson gave the Jackals their first lead of the night. With Devils forward Jeremy Akeson in the box for a boarding penalty, Anderson blistered a one-timer from the top of the slot past a frozen Connelly, giving the Jackals a 2-1 lead with 9:03 left in the period. Yannick Tifu earned his second assist of the night and Eric Regan picked up his first of two helpers.

Dan Charleston got the Devils even just 1:43 later picking the puck out of a scrum near the attacking blue line and entering the zone on a 2-on-1 with Trevor Kell. Known more for his pinpoint passing ability, Charleston surprised Cousineau and roofed a quick shot up and over the goalie’s shoulder to bring the Devils even, 2-2 heading into the second intermission.

After fifteen minutes of scoreless action to begin the third, the Jackals took advantage of a miscue by Shane Connelly behind the net as his stick splintered. Dustin Cameron fed Corey Cowick who beat Connelly, still trying to get pack in position. The Jackals fed off the emotional lift as Devil killer Andrew Sweetland scored his sixteenth goal of the season and ninth vs. Trenton 2:04 after Cowick’s goal. Sweetland finished an odd man rush beating Connelly with a quick one-timer underneath the glove to give the Jackals a 4-2 lead with just 2:26 remaining in the game. The insurance goal proved to be the game winning goal as Kory Nagy scored his fifth goal of the year, slamming home a rebound off a Leaderer shot with just over two minutes left. The Jackals and Cousineau held off a flurry of Devils chances in the final seconds to secure their fifth win of the season against Trenton.

The loss drops the Devils to 13-18-0-3 as they look to salvage their three-game homestand Saturday night when they host the Toledo Walleye at 7:00 p.m.

TRENTON DEVILS (13-18-0-3, 29pts) vs TOLEDO WALLEYE (13-18-2-1, 29pts) Game 35 ◦ Saturday, January 15, 2011 ◦ 7:00 p.m. ◦ Sun National Bank Center, Trenton, NJ

On Saturday, the Devils take on the Toledo Walleye in the third of seven matchups between the clubs this season. The Devils have defeated the Walleye in both of the clubs’ prior meetings, with Matt Lombardi breaking a 2-2 tie with 5:30 remaining in the third period on December 2, and Trenton trouncing Toledo, 6-3, on December 19 behind a hat trick by Ryan Hayes. Toledo enters Saturday night’s affair coming off a lopsided 8-2 defeat at the hands of the Reading Royals Friday night. Entering action tied with 29 points, the Devils and Walleye both have chances to end losing streaks, as Trenton is on a season-high five-game winless streak, while Toledo has lost three games in a row.

The Devils’ roster continued to fluctuate today, as defenseman Martin Nolet was activated from 21-day injured reserve, while blueliner Brad Miller was placed on 3-day injured reserve. Additionally, defenseman Justin Coutu , who hasn’t played since January 7, was transferred from 3-day IR to 7-day IR.

Earlier this week, forwards Trevor Kell, Myles Stoesz and Darcy Zajac were sent to Trenton from AHL-Albany, and last night defenseman T.J. Miller returned to the lineup from 21-day injured reserve.

Goalie Dave Caruso and forward J.S. Berube remain in Albany while three other players remain on 21-day IR: goalie Jeff Lerg, defenseman Jordon Southorn, and forward Matt Vokes.

Saturday Scouting Report* The Devils have scored 107 goals in 34

games (3.15 per game), which is tied with the Bakersfield Condors for 11th best among ECHL teams. The Walleye have scored. Toledo’s 94 markers in 34 games (2.76 per game) are the fewest in the Eastern Conference, and tie the Walleye with the Pacific Division’s Ontario Reign for the fewest goals scored in the ECHL.

* The Walleyed have fared much better on the defensive side of the puck, with their 199 goals-against ranking them seventh best in the Eastern Conference. The Devils have given up six more goals than Toledo in the same amount of game’s played, with Trenton’s 125 goals-against in 34 games coming out to 3.68 per game.

* Trenton’s power play has been hot-and-cold over the last month, but for the season, the Devils are 29-for-175 (16.6%), which is 11th in the ECHL. Toledo’s power play is one of the reason’s they have struggled lately and come

into the night in last place of the North Division. The Walleye have been blanked in 12 power-play opportunities since New Year’s Day, and are ranked last overall on the man advantage at 11.6%.

* Although Toledo’s penalty killing unit has been better than its power play, its 78.3% success rate is only good enough for 17th place in the 19 team ECHL. Most recently, the Walleye gave up three power-play goals against the Reading Royals on Friday night. Trenton’s PK has killed off five of the last six chances against them, and sits 11th overall, successful 83.2% of the time this season.

* Two bright spots for the Walleye in their otherwise difficult 2010-11 season have been forwards Andy Bohmbach and Zach Torquato. Bohmbach’s 29 points (14g, 15a) tied him with Trenton’s Ryan Hayes for fourth place in ECHL rookie scoring, while Torquato is second on the Walleye with 27 points (8g, 19a), putting him ninth in rookie scoring. Trenton’s leading scorer is Ryan Ginand, whose 37 points (15g, 22a) tie him for seventh place overall in ECHL scoring.

* The Walleye have used five goaltenders this season, with Thomas McCollum, Scott Campbell, Jordan Pearce, Joe Palmer and Jimmy Spratt all have appeared in action. At the moment, Joe Palmer and Jimmy Spratt are the masked men for the Walleye. Palmer us 4-9, with a 3.66 goals-against average and .869 save percentage. Spratt has played in one game, stopping 13 of 16 shots in relief of Palmer last night in Reading, after he appeared in five games for the CHL’s Rapid City Rush earlier this season.

* With Trenton’s regular goalie, Dave Caruso, filling in for an injured Jeff Frazee in AHL-Albany, Shane Connelly has started the last two games between the pipes, with emergency backup goaltender Anthony Felice next of the depth chart. Connelly is still searching for his first win with Trenton this season, having gone 2-0 for Elmira, 0-4-1 for South Carolina and 0-4-1 for the Devils.

Trenton tangles with Toledo for the third time this year, having won both of the previous contests.

A FISH STORYThe Toledo Walleye are the ECHL affiliate of

the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings, and the AHL’s Rockford Ice Hogs (Chicago) and Grand Rapids Griffins (Detroit). Toledo currently has five players playing with Grand Rapids, for Rockford, and one for non-affiliate Lake Erie.

The Walleye began play in the ECHL during the 2009-10 season, with the team previously being called the Toledo Storm, playing in the ECHL from 1991-2007.

The Storm was renamed the Walleye when the Toledo hockey club was sold to Toledo Arena Sports, the same company which owns the famed AAA baseball team, the Toledo Mud Hens. The Walleye play in downtown Toledo, Ohio at Huntington Center, an 8,000 seat multi-purpose arena that opened in the fall of 2009. Trenton played the second ECHL contest at Huntington Center last October, losing a 1-0 overtime game after Dave Caruso had kept the Walleye scoreless through regulation.

A walleye is a freshwater perciform fish, indigenous to most of Canada and the northern United States. The fish draw the species name “walleye” from the fact that their eyes reflect light, similar to the eyes of cats. The average walleye fish is 31 inches long and weighs nearly 20 pounds, and they are known for their ability to live and swim in deep, rough and murky waters.

Nick Vitucci is in his fifth season as head coach of the Toledo hockey club dating back to 2003-04. Before beginning his coaching career, Vitucci played 13 professional seasons for 15 different teams, including the New Jersey Rockin’ Rollers of the now defunct Roller Hockey International. Vitucci has a record five ECHL championships, with four coming as a player, and one coming as an assistant coach.
