Welcome From ECHL Commissioner Brian McKennaECHLPress Releases - October 15, 2010

Dear ECHL Fans,I am pleased to officially welcome you as the Premier ‘AA’ Hockey

League celebrates its 23rd season, making it the third-longest tenured professional league behind only the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League.

There has been a great deal of transition and change in the minor league hockey landscape over the past several seasons. As the economy continues to gradually recover and grow, the ECHL is well positioned to provide outstanding value for our fan base.

The ECHL has become an integral part of the professional hockey player development process as more than 440 players have gone on to play in the NHL after the ECHL including 35 in 2009-10.

In addition to providing affordable family entertainment to more than 77 million fans since it began, ECHL teams have become a part of their communities including donating more than $16 million and countless hours to charity the last four years.

Since it began in 1988-89 with five teams in four states, the league has grown into a coast-to-coast league with 19 teams in 14 states and British Columbia including the newest member in Greenville, S.C. In the fall of 2011, we will welcome our 20th team in suburban Chicago, the Chicago Express.

We congratulate Cincinnati on winning its second Kelly Cup championship in three years and for becoming the first team in league history to win a best of seven series after trailing 3 games to 0.

The 19th Annual ECHL All-Star Classic and Hall of Fame luncheon will be hosted by the Bakersfield Condors and Rabobank Arena on Jan. 26, 2011.

The ECHL has been represented on the last 10 Stanley Cup champions including 2010 with Chicago Blackhawks assistant coaches Mike Haviland and John Torchetti, senior director of hockey administration Al MacIsaac, developmental goaltending coach Wade Flaherty, general manager of minor league affiliations Mark Bernard and scout Ryan Stewart. The ECHL had affiliations with 28 of the 30 teams in the NHL in 2009-10, marking the 13th consecutive year for affiliations with at least 20 teams in the NHL. For the 21st season in a row, the ECHL was represented on the AHL champion with a record 17 former ECHL players on the Hershey Bears.

Thank you on behalf of the ECHL and its teams for your continued support and we hope that you and your family enjoy following your favorite team through what promises to be a fantastic ECHL season.

Sincerely,Brian McKenna, ECHL Commissioner

READING DOWNS TRENTON IN SEASON OPENERTrenton, NJ - The Royals jumped out to early 2-0 first period lead on the

road Saturday at Sun National Bank Center, and despite multiple comeback efforts from the hometown Devils, the Royals held on for a 6-5 victory.

Olivier Labelle netted the first goal of the season less than three minutes into the game. Andrew Sarauer quickly followed, on the power play at 6:46. Eric Castonguay recorded the primary assist on Sarauer’s goal in his return to Trenton.Devils’ goalie Dave Caruso stopped 14 of the 16 shots in the opening frame and Royals’ goaltender Ben Scrivens turned aside all four shots he faced, and the Royals replicated their early success from their preseason meeting with the Devils, similarly to the first period of the preseason game between the clubs on October 9.

The Devils came to life in second period with more speed and offensive force. Although Tony Zancanaro was robbed by Scrivens on a one-timer from eight feet away on Trenton’s first power play of the period, the flurry sparked the Devils to keep pressing the envelope. After being stopped on the one-timer, Zancanaro kept the play alive and made a cross-ice pass to defenseman, Dave Leaderer. The third-year-Devil patiently waited for bodies to fill the front of the net before firing a wrist shot through a screened Scrivens to get the Devils on the board at the 4:31 mark of the second period on the power play. The Royals came right back, though, and Ryan Cruthers cashed in on a loose puck in front of Caruso to restore his club’s two-goal lead at the 8:35 mark. Twenty seconds later, Caruso mishandled a wrist shot by defenseman Ryan Donald as the puck nicked Caruso’s glove and trickled into the net, expanding the Royals’ lead to a comfortable 4-1 midway through the second period.

The Devils roared back with three straight goals to close out the second period. The first of the three came from a hustling Tony Zancanaro, leaping over fallen players in the crease and swiping the puck into the goal in one motion. As if inspired by their longest-tenured teammate, the Devils responded to Zancanaro’s gritty effort when Matt Lombardi executed a 2-on-1 perfectly. With a shooting angle taken away, Lombardi slid a pass across to J.S. Berube to deposit the puck into the net. With Reading’s lead narrowed to 4-3, Trenton nearly tied it at four, but goaltender Ben Scrivens made a brilliant post-to-post split save on a shorthanded 2-on-1 started by Darcy Zajac. The Devils went on a late power play with under a minute left in the period and instead of letting the clock run out and getting back to work in the third period, nifty stickhandling by Devils’ forward Jeff Prough led to a small lane for a tip-in by Ryan Hayes with .3 seconds remaining to knot the score at 4-4.

In the third period, both teams made frequent trips to the penalty box. After an early penalty kill by the Devils gave Trenton the chance to seize them momentum, Ryan Cruthers broke free and scored his second goal of the game on an unassisted, shorthanded, breakaway to give the Royals a

5-4 lead less than five minutes into final stanza. The Devils got into more penalty trouble and although they were able to kill a couple of penalties, Reading made them pay when Labelle scored his second goal of the game, boosting the Royals lead to 6-4, on what proved to be the game-winning goal. Cruthers picked up an assist on Labelle’s goal giving him his third point of the game. After getting a two-goal lead, the Royals tightened up defensively and smothered Trenton, not giving the home team any room to generate offense. Ben Gordon was called for goaltender interference with five minutes left in the game setting up a crucial power play opportunity for Trenton. Off an offensive zone face-off win, Trevor Kell set up Justin Pender’s one-time rocket, hitting the top corner of the net, igniting a frenzy inside Sun National Bank Center. However, that would be as close as the Devils would come as the Royals killed off a late power play highlighted by Ben Scrivens stopping Pender’s one-timer on a similar looking play to the goal four minutes earlier. This time Scrivens gobbled the shot up, securing the first win of the season for the Royals in their season opener.

The Devils and Royals waste no time getting back to work as they square off at 4 p.m. at Sun National Bank Center in the finale of the weekend series

#34 Jeff Prough had two assists for the Devils, and Reading goalie #30 Ben Scrivens made 31 saves.

Devils forward Tony Zancanaro isn’t the tallest Trenton Devil, but he knows how to fire up his squad when the time calls. With the Devils being in an early two-goal deficit Saturday vs. Reading, Zancanaro, in his fourth full season with the Trenton organization, took it upon himself to ignite his teammates and the thirty-five hundred people in the SunCenter stands.

Zancanaro had a glorious chance to net his first goal of the season early in the second period on a one-timer from eight feet away, only to be stopped cold by Royals’ goalie Ben Scrivens’s left toe. The save didn’t faze Zancanaro, as he kept up with the play, making a soft pass to

defenseman Dave Leaderer who found a hole through a screened Scrivens to get the Devils on the board.

Zancanaro didn’t stop there, and would eventually find the back of the net, further igniting what would be a four-goal second period. The former Providence Friar, known for his tenacious effort around the net-mouth, leapt over fallen defenders and knocked the puck into the net all in one motion, a goal that pulled Trenton within two goals.

The rest of the Devils suddenly had a quicker step in their strides and began breaking through the previously smothering Royals’ defense,

eventually tying the Royals 4-4 by period’s end. Though the Devils ended up on the short side of the score, Zancanro finished with three points on the night, the most of any Devil, and seven shots on goal, second behind Ryan Ginand’s nine.

The Trenton Devils and Reading Royals go head-to-head for the second time in as many days as the Devils look to bounce back from an opening night loss on Saturday night in Trenton. After falling behind early, the Devils rallied a couple of times in the second and third periods, but were unable to overcome a slow start which saw the Royals jump out to an early 2-0 lead less than three minutes into the game. “We need to limit the turnovers in the neutral zone,” said Head Coach Kevin Dean. “In the second period we did a much better job managing the period and that’s why we won that period.

“Other than that it was too sloppy, we had too many turnovers.” The Devils can ill afford to drop back-to-back home games against Reading to start the season, having missed the Kelly Cup Playoffs by just two points after dropping the first eight match-ups a season ago. Faceoff for Sunday’s game is slated for 4 p.m. at the Sun National Bank Center.

Devils who did not play Saturday were healthy scratches forward Matt Kang and defenseman Jordon Southorn, plus defenseman Gord Burnett, and forwards Taylor Vichorek and Matt Vokes, all on injured reserve.

Did you know that Trenton’s Jeff Prough and Matt Vokes were teammates at Brown University? The two Devils laced them up for the Bears for three straight seasons, from 2005-06 to 2007-08.

First year Devil, Martin Nolet, is a 2010 graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, where besides being named to Hockey

East’s All-Academic Team four straight seasons, he graduated with a 3.95 GPA (the highest among Hockey East defensemen) while majoring in psychology with a pre-mad track.

Darcy Zajac joins the Devils directly from the University of North Dakota, where he was named to the WCHA’s All-Academic Team three straight seasons as a member of the Fighting Sioux. As a senior, Zajac was presented with the Archie Krum Memorial Athletic Scholarship as the UND player “who best demonstrates leadership qualities, high academic standards and athletic excellence.”

Goaltender Jeff Lerg is a 2009 graduate of Michigan State University where he graduated with a 3.8 GPA majoring in finance, being named Academic All-America of the Year in the At-Large Division by the College Sports Information Directors of America as a senior. Was also named to MSU’s and the CCHA’s All-Academic Teams in both his sophomore and junior seasons, and was named the CCHA’s Scholar Athlete of the Year as a junior.

Defenseman, Andy Thomas, is a 2008 graduate of the University of Denver, where he was received DU’s WCHA Scolar Athlete Award as a junior in 2007. In addition, received a partial scholarship to continue his studies at a post-graduation school of his choice, but instead chose to pursue his hockey career, turning pro in 2008.

BLOODLINESNew Trenton Devil Darcy Zajac is the younger brother of current New Jersey Devil center, Travis Zajac. After

growing up in Winnipeg, both Zajacs opted out of the junior route and to played collegiately for the Fighting Sioux of the University of North Dakota (WCHA). Young Darcy hopes to join Travis in New Jersey in the next few years.

Older brother Travis’ college goaltender in North Dakota, Jordan Parise, is the younger brother of Zach, who has been New Jersey’s leading scorer since his NHL debut five years ago.

The Zajacs are not the only pair of brothers to play in the Devils’ organization at the same time. Current Albany Devil, Stephen Gionta, is the younger brother of Brian Gionta who laced them up for the New Jersey Devils from 2001-2009, won the Stanley Cup in 2003 and set the franchise record for goals in a season with 48 in 2005-06. Like the Zajacs, both Gionta’s played collegiately for the same school, as both are alumni of Boston College.

Mike Pandolfo, a Trenton Devil in 2006-07, and an Albany Devil in 2007-08, is the younger brother of Jay Pandolfo, who was part of the New Jersey Devils’ Stanley Cup championship teams in both 2000 and 2003, wearing a Devil uniform from 1996-2010.
