It gives me great pleasure to be accorded this

opportunity to write to you, the esteemed reader of

the sixth edition of ‘Destination Zambia’.

I am delighted that this publication comes as a result of the

close partnership between the Tourism Council of Zambia

(TCZ) and the Zambia Tourism Board (ZTB).

My Ministry will continue to support the efforts of the

private sector in projects such as the publication of

‘Destination Zambia’ in our mutual quest to highlight and

celebrate the beauty and diversity of our country.

Our goal in this particular area is twofold: to show the

diverse experiences that are available to foreign tourists;

and to open up the tourism sector for Zambians to explore

and enjoy the splendour of their own backyard.

‘Destination Zambia’ will no doubt serve to provide just a

taste of what we offer to our target and source markets,

and in those territories where we remain undiscovered

beyond our well known icon, the Victoria Falls.

I am especially pleased that we have embraced

technological developments and that you, the reader, can

read and pass on an electronic copy of the publication to

others on-line.

I remain confident that ‘Destination Zambia’ will evolve to

offer a complete insight into what awaits you and that it

will be a tool that will assist you in reaching that very correct

decision to make Zambia your next holiday destination.

My vision is to push Zambia’s visibility within the subregion

and internationally to become one of the world’s most

preferred tourist destinations, leveraging on Victoria Falls,

the country’s abundant wildlife resource in our 22 national

game parks, the culture and smiles of Zambian people and

the synergy to be achieved from subregional partnerships.

It has been a great year for Zambia as, jointly with

Zimbabwe, we co-hosted the United Nations World

Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly. And in

2014 Zambia celebrates 50 years of independence. A truly

Zambian welcome awaits you.

The Hon. Sylvia Masebo, MPMinister of Tourism and Arts

Let Zambia bring out

the explorer in you

Introduction

‘Let’s explore’ is the

catchy and inviting slogan

of Zambia Tourist Board.

And if ever a country

was ripe for exploration,

Zambia is it.

Page 7: Destination Zambia 2014

Apart from the falls, most visitors come for the wildlife.

Zambia’s 19 game parks are as impressive as they are

varied. South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi National

Parks are regarded as among Africa’s very finest, with

top-notch game viewing, knowledgeable guiding, first-rate

accommodation and great service. Kafue National Park is

also gaining in reputation. Some others, once neglected

and almost depleted of game, are being rehabilitated under

new management and, given time, will broaden Zambia’s

appeal to game watchers and birders.

mAn-mAde

As an alternative to Livingstone and the game parks,

Zambia has one further gem in the shape of Lake Kariba,

the world’s largest man-made body of water by volume.

The lakeside town of Siavonga can claim to be Zambia’s

own riviera with its sandy beaches, a good selection of

hotels and even houseboats for hire.

Of course, no visit to Zambia would be complete without

some time spent in Lusaka. Many visitors just change

planes at the city’s Kenneth Kaunda International Airport

before heading out to the game parks, but a short break

in the nation’s capital can be very rewarding. Increasingly,

too, Lusaka is the location of choice for major international

conferences and now has a range of fine hotels, good

shops and a wide choice of restaurants. In most respects,

Lusaka is one of Africa’s nicest cities, with a pleasant and

friendly atmosphere. So why not explore Lusaka, too?

Destination ZAMBIA 5

Introduction

This is a huge and largely underpopulated nation

of just over 14 million inhabiting a massive

750,000 sq km country that in many respects is still

unexplored by tourists. Distances are huge and there

are areas which, to this day, are little visited, even

by Zambians – wilderness game parks, for example,

that see just a handful of visitors each year yet are

teeming with wildlife.

Also worthy of exploration are the many fascinating and

intriguing cultures of Zambia, a nation of some 70 tribes

with more than 70 languages and dialects, of which only

seven have official status.

FesTivALs

This is a land of colourful festivals and age-old ceremonies

that form an integral part of national life, especially in rural

areas, and are not staged just for tourists. Unfortunately,

these festivals do not always have a fixed date in the

calendar so it may not be possible to attend if you are in

Zambia for only a short time.

The most spectacular of these festivals is Kuomboka

(meaning ‘to get out of the water’), which takes place at

the end of the rainy season. The Lozi King is ceremoniously

propelled by oarsmen from Lealui to his dry season

residence on higher ground at Limulunga in a black-and-

white state barge, complete with a replica black elephant.

Most famously, from a tourism perspective, Zambia is home

to Africa’s most spectacular natural wonder, the Victoria

Falls (Mosi-oa-Tunya), where the mighty Zambezi River

drops over 100 metres at up to 3,000 cubic metres per

second as it flows powerfully eastwards on its way to the

Indian Ocean.

As the gateway Victoria Falls, the city of Livingstone is

undoubtedly the nation’s tourism capital with plenty to

do and see. Livingstone has a growing reputation as a

destination for thrill-seekers, but the city has something for

all ages. If you don’t want to participate in death-defying

bungee jumping from the Victoria Falls Bridge, you can

always opt for a leisurely sundowner cruise on the Zambezi

or a steam train excursion with elegant dining.

Page 9: Destination Zambia 2014

Zambia has 19 national parks and 34 game

management areas (GMAs). Together they cover

nearly a third of the country’s total land area.

Some parks are well known, highly developed and

frequently visited. At the other end of the scale, there are

parks that require upgrading and restocking. These may

require outside management along the lines already well

established in national parks such as Kasanka where, in

conjunction with the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA),

energetic charitable trusts have taken over the day-to-day

running of wildlife areas.

By the same token, some national parks are easier to

reach than others. Some are remote, while others such as

Mosi-oa-Tunya are only a few minutes from a city centre.

Only South Luangwa (via Mfuwe) and Lower Zambezi

National Park (via the Jeki and Royal airstrips) are served by

scheduled flights, while one or two others can be reached

by reasonably easy to arrange charters. One or two more

are probably best accessed overland, especially as the

nation’s road network continues to improve. Kafue comes

into this latter category.

In terms of ecosystems, Zambia’s national parks fall into five

main groups:

• Low veld (such as North/South Luangwa and Lower

Zambezi)

• High veld (Kafue)

• Floodplain (Blue Lagoon, Lochinvar and Bangweulu)

• Zoological (Mosi-oa-Tunya)

• Montane (Nyika)

A wilderness

Destination ZAMBIA 7

National Parks

Page 11: Destination Zambia 2014

Each category has its attractions. For a

comprehensive overview of Zambia’s wildlife, you

must visit more than one park. Certain species prefer

certain environments and altitudes, so that antelope

such as sable and roan, prevalent in the high-veld parks

such as Kafue, are not found in low-veld areas like the

Luangwa Valley. Similarly, sitatunga and lechwe tend to

inhabit wetland areas like Bangweulu.

Zambia’s most popular parks – South Luangwa, for example

– are largely self-financing, but others in more remote parts

of Zambia are rarely visited and have no visitor facilities and

employ just one or two Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA)

rangers. For this reason, ZAWA and the Zambia Tourism

Board are keen to encourage visitors to seek out lesser-

known parks. Lukusuzi in the east and West Lunga are

two examples. Both have great potential. But Blue Lagoon,

Lavushi Manda, Lusenga Plains, Mweru Wantipa and Nyika

can also be characterised as little visited.

Here are details of some of Zambia’s lesser-known parks not

mentioned in other sections of ‘Destination Zambia’:

BLue LAgoon nATionAL PArk

Previously controlled by the Ministry of Defence and closed

to the public, Blue Lagoon National Park is now open to

visitors, but remains mostly undiscovered. The 500 sq km

park is now administered by the ZAWA. Blue Lagoon is only

120 km from Lusaka, making it an ideal day visit or easy

weekend getaway from the nation’s capital. The area was

originally a colonial farm and the farmhouse is now used as

the park’s reception. Nearby are four cottages which serve

as the Blue Lagoon’s only permanent accommodation.

There is also a campsite.

On the vast floodplains of Blue Lagoon there are herds

of kafue lechwe, sitatunga, zebra and a few buffalo. In

addition, Blue Lagoon, like nearby Lochinvar National Park,

is home to an amazing variety of birdlife.

LAvushi mAndA nATionAL PArk

Set amid rolling hills and pristine miombo woodland, the

1,500 sq km Lavushi Manda National Park is yet another

victim of poaching. Game is much depleted, but there are

still roan, hartebeest and sable which migrate here in the

rainy season. Even lion and leopard are to be found here.

There are no visitor facilities.

Help is at hand since the arrival of the Kasanka Trust, which

is working hard on anti-poaching measures while improving

access. So prospects look good for Lavushi Manda.

LiuwA PLAins nATionAL PArk

This is a remote park in the west of Zambia. Blue hartebeest

are its biggest attraction, but wild dog and lion are also

present in this little visited area.

Liuwa is administered by African Parks (Zambia) in a

partnership between African Parks, ZAWA and the Barotse

Royal Establishment, the traditional government of the

local Lozi people. Since taking over in 2003, African

Parks has overseen a huge increase in animal numbers;

a trebling of wildebeest and growing numbers of zebra,

tsessebe, reintroduced buffalo, red lechwe, oribi and

wattled crane populations.

LuAmBe nATionAL PArk

See Luangwa Valley section on page 40.

LukusuZi nATionAL PArk

See Luangwa Valley section on page 40.

LusengA PLAins nATionAL PArk

Located in Luapula province, Lusenga Plains National Park

is being revived after many years of neglect. Impala, zebra

and wildebeest have already been released and large

numbers of elephant translocated from South Africa.

In addition, some roads have been laid out, while at the

same time ZAWA steps up its anti-poaching programme in

the park, which is under trust management.

LochinvAr nATionAL PArk

Located off the main Lusaka-Livingstone highway, the

428 sq km Lochinvar National Park is one of Africa’s finest

wetland areas. This former cattle ranch has been a national

park since 1972.

As with Blue Lagoon, the park is famous for its birdlife, with

over 400 recorded species, as well as for its populations of

water-loving antelope such as sitatunga, oribi, the Kafue

lechwe, bushbuck and waterbuck. In addition, zebra,

wildebeest, kudu and buffalo can be found here.

During the wet season, the park is mostly flooded grassland.

Herds of antelope move around the park throughout the

year as the water rises and then subsides. The park straddles

two eco-regions, with woodland in the south and the

floodplains (an important Ramsar site) in the north.

With only buffalo a possible threat, this park is ideal for

walking safaris. At certain times of the year, a makoro boat

is another way of viewing game as well as seeing the park’s

impressive number and variety of waterfowl, said to be the

highest in Zambia.

In addition to game viewing, the park has hot springs and

is home to the Iron Age village of Sibanze Hill.

mweru wAnTiPA nATionAL PArk

Located in the far north on the lake of the same

name, Mweru Wantipa National Park is a sad case. The

wetland park used to contain vast herds of elephant, but

unfortunately these are long gone. There are still a few

buffalo, though. There are no permanent facilities and

few animals to view. Camping is possible close to the lake.

There is no access to the park during the rainy season.

nyikA nATionAL PArk

Not to be confused with the Malawian park with of the

same name and just across the border, Nyika offers a

different kind of topography from the rest of Zambia. A

montane highland area sitting about 2,000 metres above

sea level, the park is renowned for its spectacular views and

unusual cloud formations.

wesT LungA nATionAL PArk

Located in North Western Province and among Zambia’s

least visited parks, West Lunga is best known as the home

of the yellow-backed duiker.

Under the administration of the West Lunga Development

Trust, the area is being managed in a sustainable

manner. But owing to the thickness of the forest,

West Lunga is unlikely to become a major attraction.

Nevertheless, the park contains many small forest animals

as well as some larger species.

Zambia’s capital city, Lusaka, is one of Africa’s most

delightful. It may not be the most outstanding

architecturally or enjoy the heady ambience of others,

but it is a wonderfully relaxed place in which to

live and work and has a rather splendid year-round

climate, with coolish, sunny winters complemented by

warm, damp summers.

As the Zambian economy continues to power ahead, so

Lusaka is becoming ever more affluent. This is especially

evident in the smart shopping malls that line the Great East

Road from Kenneth Kaunda International Airport to the

central business district. It is also illustrated by new hotels, a

growing range of restaurants and the general well being of

the average Zambian.

If this is a city with a surprisingly large population of 1.7

million, then it certainly doesn’t feel like it. Aside from

bottlenecks on the Great East Road and at times on Cairo

Road, Lusaka is mostly traffic-free and getting around is

relatively easy and straightforward. Foreign visitors certainly

don’t need to hire a driver, as they do in many African cities.

At its heart, Lusaka has retained the structure set out by its

colonial planners over 80 years ago. Fine public buildings

and broad tree-lined avenues still grace its centre. Walking

the streets is safe and pleasant. The railway line that divides

the city in two is another throwback to its colonial past.

ATTrAcTive BAse

Lusaka was chosen as the nation’s capital because of its

central location at a point where the Great North and Great

East roads met. Today, these roads provide ready access

from Lusaka to the rest of Zambia.

This, together with the city’s growing number of airlines

and flights, has made it an attractive base for business

people as well as an ideal point from which to visit other

parts of the country.

Visitors will not be disappointed with the range of hotels on

offer. Hotel capacity has been growing fast in recent times,

with the Radisson being the latest international brand to

take up residence in Lusaka. Other hotel choices include the

InterContinental, Taj, Protea and Southern Sun, plus a good

selection of mid-range and budget-priced accommodation.

These hotels are ideal for first-night and last-night visits for

those arriving or departing on long-haul flights.

shoPPing mALLs

Much of the city’s social life – at least for well heeled locals

– centres on its two shopping malls: Arcades and Manda

Hill. The pair not only offer designer-brand shopping, but

provide a good selection of restaurants, from fast food to

gourmet, as well as a sprinkling of coffee shops and the like.

There are also numerous clubs, many dating from colonial

times. Two of the oldest and best known are the Lusaka

Club, established in 1951, with facilities for tennis, squash,

football and bowls; and the nearby Lusaka Golf Club (there

are also Chilanga and Chainama Hills).

On the debit side, there is a limited range of things to

see. They include the Lusaka National Museum and a

few themed museums, the cultural village, the zoo,

the baby elephant nursery (see panel story) and the

botanical gardens.

As its name suggests, the Lilayi Elephant Nursery just

outside Lusaka takes care of abandoned elephant calves,

often the tragic victims of poaching and human conflict.

When younger than two years old, calves are vulnerable

and highly dependent on their mothers. Many do not

survive without care and nutrient-rich milk.

This is provided by Game Rangers International, a Zambian

non-profit organisation supported by the David Shepherd

Wildlife Foundation, which works closely with the Zambian

Wildlife Authority (ZAWA). Visitors are welcome between

11 am and 1 pm each day.

A haven for orphaned elephants

A team of keepers watch and care for the calves 24

hours a day, whether out for their daily walks or sitting

close by their boma at night. The young elephants learn

to overcome the loss of their family as they browse, play

and bath together in a natural environment.

The Lilayi Resort & Game Reserve is set in about 600

hectares and is home to 23 mammal species and over

300 bird species.

Activities: Manda Hill; Arcades (shopping malls), Kabwata Cultural Village

Airports: Lusaka International Airport (LUN)

Best time to visit: All year round

Major attractions: Soweto Market, The Anglican Cathedral, Henry Tayali Gallery, Munda Wanga Environmental Park

Thrills and spills

in zambia’s

tourism capital

If Africa has a tourism capital, then surely Livingstone

must vie with Cape Town for that coveted title. Here

is a city that in the past 20 years has become the

‘go to’ destination for thrills and excitement. And,

of course, it is home to one of the world’s greatest

natural wonders, the truly spectacular Victoria Falls

(Mosi-oa-Tunya).

The falls, a Unesco World Heritage Site, are 2 km wide

and drop more than 100 metres at a rate of 550,000 cubic

metres per second when in full fl ow.

Livingstone’s reputation for white-knuckle sports is well

founded. This is the adrenalin-fuelled destination that offers

so much, attracting the young at heart to take part in an

exciting range of daredevil activities. But Livingstone also

has a quieter side, offering sundowner cruises and steam

train rides.

LuxuRiOuS

Starting from the falls and lining the banks of the

Zambian side of the Zambezi River is a series of truly

luxurious and discreetly spaced properties that stretches

for many kilometres. The waterside locations of these

properties are matched by an impressively high standard

of accommodation, food and service. Closer to town

and in Livingstone itself there is a range of less expensive

and even business-type hotels, guest-houses and

backpackers’ hostels.

Livingstone & Western Provinces

In recognition of its growing tourism status, Livingstone

was chosen, along with neighbouring Victoria Falls

in Zimbabwe, as the joint host of the 20th general

assembly in 2013 of the United Nations World Tourism

Organisation (UNWTO).

Until 1935 Livingstone was the nation’s capital city

and it still retains many fine examples of colonial-style

architecture. Today, Livingstone is Zambia’s fourth-largest

city in terms of population.

TRaDiTiOnaL

For those seeking the area’s rural and traditional ways of

life, then many villages offer a warm welcome to visitors.

The annual Lwiindi Ceremony, held each October, is a

chance to see and hear traditional song, dance, poetry and

theatre in celebration of the local Mukuni heritage. It is

also an opportunity to view excellent craftsmanship such as

carvings, basketware and art at Mukuni Park and close to

the falls.

TERminaL

The completion in mid 2013 of a new international terminal

at Livingstone’s Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International

Airport is another welcome development. The existing

terminal is now only for domestic flights. Direct flights by

carriers such as Ethiopian and Kenya Airways have made

Livingstone easier to reach and more attractive as a multi-

centre destination.

Activities: River Cruise on the Zambezi, riverboarding, white water rafting, canoeing, horse riding trails, abseiling, golf course, bungee jumping, kayaking, game safaris, microlighting or helicopter flips, elephant-back safaris, lion walks

Airports: Daily flights to Livingstone from Lusaka and Johannesburg

Best time to visit: All year round

Major attractions: Victoria Falls (one of the Seven Wonders of the World), Livingstone Museum, Livingstone Island

The falls may be the initial reason to visit Livingstone, but

the city offers so much more. The list of activities from which

to choose is a long an impressive one. Here is a selection:

• Micro-light flights over the falls

• Helicopter flights over the falls (for a dramatic

view of Mosi-oa-Tunya)

• Sundowner cruises on the Zambezi River

• Lion Encounter (a chance to see the big cats

close up)

• Steam train excursions in the Royal Livingstone

Express (departing twice a week from the

Bushtracks Africa compound and including

elegant seven-course dining)

• Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park (right on

Livingstone’s doorstep)

• Bungee jumping off Victoria Falls Bridge (a

death-defying leap of 111 metres)

• Reptile Park (crocodiles and snakes galore)

• Livingstone Museum (excellent and informative)

• Jet boating (running the rapids below the falls in

Batoka Gorge on board a 700 hp 22-seater boat)

• White water rafting (same as above, but without

an engine)

• River boarding (not for the faint-hearted)

• Riding safaris (view wildlife while on

horse-back)

• Canoe safaris (a chance to view wildlife from the

safety of the Upper Zambezi)

• Elephant-back safaris (once-in-a-lifetime

experience provided by Zambezi Elephant Trails)

Lower Zambezi National Park (LZNP) is one of

Africa’s fi nest – a place where conservation

comes fi rst. It may not enjoy the game densities of

some other national parks, but for those seeking a

truly remote location in a special setting, then LZNP

is the place.

Covering an area of 4,092 sq km, LZNP is Zambia’s newest

park, established in 1983. Two game-managed areas

(Chiawa and Rufunsa) are adjacent to the park.

LZNP is dominated on one side by the broad, clear,

powerful waters of the Zambezi River, which fl ows for 120

km through the park; and on the other by the Zambezi

Escarpment. On the opposite of the river, in Zimbabwe, is

Mana Pools National Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site.

LZNP is also set to become a Unesco site, and rightly so.

The area is still wonderfully remote and undeveloped and

the park’s few – and almost exclusively owner-run – camps,

lodges and houses are cleverly spaced along the river bank

to ensure that human impact on the park is kept to a

minimum. A few properties are located on the Zambezi but

outside the park itself. Occasionally, a new small camp or

lodge opens, but otherwise this park remains unspoilt.

on ThE RiVER

Boat is often the fastest and easiest means of transport

between these properties. The river also provides an

opportunity for visitors to mix land and waterborne game

viewing and to enjoy activities such as fi shing and canoeing,

either as a short excursion or a multi-day expedition.

Getting up close to hippo, crocodile and elephant while in a

canoe is one of LZNP’s unique attractions.

For many, however, Lower Zambezi is first and foremost

a destination for sport fishing. The park has a strictly

enforced catch and release policy. The legendary and hard-

fighting tigerfish is top of every visiting angler’s list. But

for sheer size, there is nothing to beat the huge catfish,

weighing up to 50 kg, which inhabit this river. Spinning, fly

and bait casting is available.

In conjunction with Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA),

the non-governmental Conservation Lower Zambezi (CLZ)

works to ensure the protection of the park’s wildlife. The

wildlife authority organises anti-poaching teams to patrol

the park as well as the surrounding game management

areas. CLZ provides logistical support to ZAWA units and

supports around 12 patrol team deployments a month

within the Chiawa GMA and the national park.

Luangwa Valley

The Luangwa Valley comprises four parks:

• South Luangwa (arguably Africa’s finest such

wildlife reserve) covering 9,050 sq km

• Lesser known and still undeveloped North Luangwa

of 4,636 sq km

• The tiny and (previously privately administered)

Luambe National Park of just 300 sq km

• Lukusuzi National Park of 2,720 sq km.

SouTh Luangwa

Of the four, South Luangwa is easily the best known

and most popular. This park offers some of the finest

game viewing anywhere in Africa. Animal densities are

impressively high, especially as the dry season continues,

forcing wildlife to congregate closer and closer to the banks

of the Luangwa River with its huge hippo pods and giant

sunning crocodiles.

Aside from the broad waters of the river and the oxbow

lakes it has created, this is a landscape dominated by

mopane, leadwood and winterthorn trees and also dotted

with marula, tamarind and sturdy baobab. There are plenty

of open tracts of grassland, however, making for excellent

game viewing.

South Luangwa contains some 60 animal species and over

400 bird species. This is also a park with a high rate of

leopard sightings. In fact, it is not uncommon for visitors

to see more than one leopard during a single game drive.

The finest game viewing

in a spectacular valley

Page 43: Destination Zambia 2014

Destination ZAMBIA 41

Luangwa Valley

Lions are also plentiful, wild dogs are seen from time

to time, serval are a rare delight but sadly there are no

cheetah. The valley has its own unique subspecies, such

as Thornicroft’s giraffe, of which there are thought to be

fewer than 1,500 remaining.

Lodges and camps are of a high standard, and there is

accommodation to suit all budgets and tastes, from basic

campsites to the ultimate in safari luxury. Most of the

accommodation is located just outside the main entrance,

but there are camps and lodges inside the park, with a

select few located well away from the more popular main

gate area.

South Luangwa is famed for its walking safaris on which

small groups, escorted by a guide and an armed ranger,

have an opportunity to see aspects of nature not always

apparent from a 4x4 vehicle. In certain sections of the park

it is also possible to walk from one camp to another.

Tourists should be aware that the entire valley is seasonal,

with relatively few visitors from December to May. Heavy

green-season rains make many areas impassable, although

a handful of lodges high above the waterline do stay open.

Nevertheless, the green season can be a good time to visit

because of its riot of verdant colours and excellent sightings

of birds in their breeding plumage; and, out of season, it

is great value for money. At this time of year visitors can

navigate the park’s channels by boat as well as view wildlife

by good 4x4 vehicle.

noRTh Luangwa

North Luangwa (NLNP) is considered one of the last

true wildernesses on the Continent and after a 27-year

partnership between FZS and ZAWA this is considered to be

the best protected area in the country.

As a result, the area contains the largest number of

elephants in Zambia and the strenth of this partnership

enabled the largest black rhino reintroduction into a former

range state to take place. The rhino population currently

stands at 30.

NLNP is a blend of habitats with the typical Luangwa

roverine habitant and species to the east and a high

density of buffalo and lion as well as endemic Cookson’s

wildebeest along the Mwaleshi River.

A quarter of the park contains the Muchinga Escarpment

and plateau habitant – perfect landscape for sable,

hartebeet, roan antelope and the rarely seen white-winged

babblng starling.

The park contains a handful of small seasonal bush camps

and, as with South Luangwa, walking safaris are a key

feature of any visit.

Unfortunately, there are currently no visitor facilities

available in either Luambe or Lukusuzi National Parks.

Activities: Walking safaris, birdwatching (400 of Zambia’s 732 species are found here), photographic safaris

Airports/airstrips: Daily to South Luangwa (Mfuwe) from Lusaka all year. North Luangwa is more difficult but there are airstrips open for charter traffic

Best time to visit: April-October (South Luangwa) with some properties

open year-round, June to October (North Luangwa: access in the rainy season is virtually impossible)

Wildlife found in this area: Elephant, buffalo, lion, caracal, wild dog, serval and side-striped jackal and very good leopard densities plus many others

Major attractions: Thornicroft’s giraffe and Cookson’s wildebeest (both unique to Luangwa Valley)

Kafue

48

Kafue National Park, with an area of 22,480 sq

km, is the second-largest national park in Africa

and the fourth-largest in the world. If we add the

surrounding game management areas, it represents a total

conservation area of more than 66,000 sq km. This huge

area, embracing several ecosystems, makes Kafue one

of the most diverse parks in the world with probably the

highest diversity of mammals.

This, combined with relatively low visitor numbers – about

15,000 visitors a year – makes Kafue a true wilderness

destination where guests can experience nature without

mass tourism. In Kafue NP it rare to see more than one

game drive vehicle at a sighting, thus preserving the magic

of a true wilderness experience. Kafue offers both night

drives and walking safaris, thus adding to the special

experience that visitors are looking for.

Ecotourism is now the fastest-growing area of tourism, and

operators are constantly on the look-out for destinations

that meet the aspirations of their guests. Specialist

operators have recognised Kafue as a true ecotourism

destination which translates into growing numbers of

visitors. This is important, since tourism is the main source

of income to pay for conservation. Guests visiting Kafue

thus make an active contribution to protecting the park.

This is clearly shown by the growing numbers and diversity

of animals in the areas where lodges operate. So it is

very good news that new lodges such as Musekese have

opened recently, with more to follow in the coming years.

EnCouRaging

Poaching is currently the main threat to conservation

in Africa, but in Kafue NP there are encouraging

developments. The Zambian Wildlife Authority (ZAWA)

recently announced that the salaries of its employees

would in future be paid by the government. Until now,

ZAWA has been responsible for this and the salaries had to

come out of revenues generated by ZAWA.

ZAWA has plans to increase dramatically the number

of scouts in the field. Since their wages will paid by the

government, this will free up more ZAWA funds for

infrastructure development.

Furthermore, Game Rangers International, which also runs

successful cooperation with ZAWA over rapid response

teams. These highly trained and motivated teams are

already making a difference.

The Kafue River Camp is situated in one of the most beautiful spots on one of the most beautiful rivers in Africa.

The camp is on the north bank of the river, opposite the Kafue National Park, in a game management area to the east of the confluence of the Kafue and Lunga rivers. The area around the camp includes

some of Africa’s prime wildlife spots.

Select, small groups and individuals have the opportunity to stay in catered comfort in the four luxury chalets at the camp. These are nestled under the splendid trees on the banks of the river.

That riviera

‘inland sea’

Measuring over 220 km long and 40 km at its

widest point, Lake Kariba is the world’s largest

artificial lake and reservoir by volume, covering an

area of 5,580 sq km.

Lake Kariba is landlocked Zambia’s own inland oceanfront –

a place by the ‘seaside’ just a short drive from Lusaka. The

lake offers visitors a chance to enjoy waterborne activities

such as boating, canoeing and fishing. Unfortunately,

because of crocodiles, it is not wise to swim in Lake Kariba.

Siavonga has grown up as Zambia’s own riviera resort

town. There are several hotels close to the town, mostly

budget to mid-range in terms of quality.

In recent times, Zambia has seen more and more

houseboats being moored at the edge of the lake. This was

always common on the Zimbabwe side of the lake, but is

something relatively new for Zambia.

oPuLENCE

Protea Hotels operates from Siavonga with an impressive

three-deck vessel called the ‘Southern Belle’. Modelled on

the old Mississippi-style paddle steamers, the ‘Southern

Belle’ has 21 suites (including a spacious presidential suite)

and guests enjoy a high level of opulence. There are also

several smaller and comparatively inexpensive houseboats

accommodating up to 30 guests at a time.

Aside from the delights of the lake, the one big ‘must do’ is

a visit to the wall of the spectacular Kariba Dam.

Activities: Houseboats, leisure and sports fishing, visit to the Batonga cultural village, water sports, boating opportunities

a land still awaiting discovery

Northern and Central Zambia remain largely

remote, undiscovered and little visited by tourists,

either domestic or foreign.

Often hard to reach by road or by air, but always worth the

effort, the Northern Province (Zambia’s largest, covering

one-fifth of the country) and neighbouring Luapula

Province contain wide-open spaces and low population

densities but offer very limited accommodation. This vast

area has great unrealised potential, however, and for those

willing to take the time and trouble to venture north from

Lusaka, a visit can be rewarding.

Zambia’s first privately run game reserve, the 390 sq km

Kasanka National Park, is in northern Zambia. Managed

by the Kasanka Trust wildlife charity, which also runs two

lodges and two campsites, the park and the associated

Bangweulu Wetlands represent one of Africa’s most

spectacular wildlife areas as well as being home to over

100,000 black lechwe.

Moreover, Kasanka is host to a unique bat migration when

several million straw-coloured bats come to roost every

November and December to coincide with the arrival of

the rainy season and the ripening of local wild fruit. It is

said to be the highest-density mammalian biomass on

the planet and the largest migration of any species. In

addition, Bangweulu is probably the best place in Africa to

view the shoebills.

Kasanka has several other claims to fame in terms of

biodiversity. It offers the best opportunity to view the shy

and aquatic sitatunga or marshbuck, with over 1,000 of the

animals believed to inhabit the park. The blue monkey is

suffer from predator competition. In addition, there are two

species of otter, plus rare animals such as caracal, serval and

honey badger as well as several species of mongoose.

ShaLLoW

Lake Bangweulu, although very shallow, is about 75 km

long and 40 km wide at its broadest point and covers

an area of about 3,000 sq km. During the rainy season

the lake expands and overflows into the swamps and

floodplain. Bangweulu’s many lagoons and channels act as

a brake on the nearby Luapala Valley, becoming flooded in

the rainy season.

The 2,000 sq km Nsumbu National Park, at the

elephant, hippo, puku, roan, sable, eland, warthog and

bushbuck. There is a chance to view sitatunga in the

Kampasa rainforest. Lion, leopard and buffalo are also

present, but in limited numbers. Like many other Zambian

parks, Nsumbu is undergoing a period of recovery and

animal numbers are growing year on year.

divE CENTRE

Lake Tanganyika has Zambia’s only PADI dive centre. The

lake’s crystal-clear waters and its amazing underwater

topography combine to make this an unusual underwater

paradise. There is also excellent fishing for Nile perch,

salmon, tigerfish and yellowbelly. Each year, the Zambia

National Fishing Competition is held at Nkamba Lodge and

Ndole Bay Lodge, located within Nsumbu National Park.

In addition to Lake Tanganyika, the region contains Lake

Mweru and Lake Nabeul; various wetland areas; and the

Getting to northern Zambia by road can be difficult. There

is a tarmacked road all the way from Lusaka to the port

of Mpulungu on Lake Tanganyika. The gravel road from

Shiwa Ng’andu is an English-style mansion house built in remote central Zambia by an eccentric Englishman, Sir Stewart Gore Brown, and depicted in the book ‘The Africa House’ by Christina Lamb.

Sir Stewart died in 1967. Shiwa then fell into disrepair. But in 1999, it was bought by his grandson and then returned to its former

glory. Shiwa House accommodates four to five couples. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms and are simple with original hardwood furnishings and paintings. Fireplaces are lit every night and the atmosphere at Shiwa is unique.

The food is good, simple and wholesome and the beautiful gardens are kept in their former glory.

Copperbelt

more visitors

drawn to newly

confident

Copperbelt

It may not be a centre of tourism, but the Copperbelt

is Zambia’s industrial heartland and the source of

much of its wealth, providing up to 80 per cent of

the nation’s foreign exchange earnings. Its five main

towns and cities are Ndola, Kitwe, Chingola, Luanshya

and Mufulira.

As its name suggests, the Copperbelt is dominated by

mining rather than tourism, so accommodation is geared

almost exclusively to business travellers.

During the 1980s and 1990s the area experienced tough

times and much of its manufacturing base disappeared. It

seems odd today, but at its peak Ndola even had its own

Land Rover assembly plant as well factories owned by other

top foreign firms.

ComEBaCK

In recent years the Copperbelt has made a comeback in

the wake of stronger world copper prices and this has

seen a renewed interest in the area. Airlines such as Kenya

Airways and Ethiopian have launched flights to Ndola’s

Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport to add to

those offered by Proflight, South African Airways and other

carriers serving Johannesburg.

Perhaps the most picturesque of the five towns is Chingola.

About 60 km from Chingola is the Chimfunshi Wildlife

Orphanage, providing a home for over 100 orphaned

chimpanzees.

One particular reason to visit Chingola is to play the truly

outstanding Nchanga Golf Course, which dates from the

mid 1930s. Remarkably, the course was once rated 14th

best in the world outside the United States. Its owner,

Konkola Copper Mines, has invested heavily in revamping

and upgrading this truly great course and its clubhouse.

aTTRaCTioNS

Ndola, meanwhile, has a large business district as well as

a range of good shops. One of its principal attractions is

the popular annual Zambia International Trade Fair in July,

which attracted over 100,000 visitors in 2013.

Ndola is home to the Copperbelt Museum, with many

fascinating exhibits relating to the region’s mining sector.

The Dag Hammarskjöld Memorial, just 10 km from Ndola,

marks the place where the United Nations Secretary

General tragically died in a plane crash in 1961 during the

Katanga crisis in the Republic of Congo.

Kitwe is Zambia’s second-largest second city, with a

population of over half a million. In addition to similar

projects in Ndola, new shopping malls (Copper Hill,

Freedom Park and Mukuba) are either completed or under

construction in Kitwe – a sign of the growing affluence of

Kitwe and of Zambia.

Activities: Nchanga Golf Course (Chingola), Visiting the copper mines

Airports: Daily flights from Lusaka to Ndola and Solwezi

Best time to visit: April-November
