WELCOME

W elcome to beautiful North Central Washington and lower British Columbia, one of the greatest un-spoiled recreational areas in the Pacific Northwest. By traveling north from Wenatchee along the many

scenic byways like the Okanogan Trails Byway and the Inter-national Discovery Loop, you will experience two countries, many cultures and unique history and heritage. The area abounds with ghost towns, historical landmarks, abandoned (and active) mines, camping, fishing, hunting, boating, swimming, golfing, rock climbing, sightseeing, wild-life viewing, horseback riding—you name it! Canada’s only desert region lies just north of the border, in southern British Columbia from Osoyoos to Kelowna. The area is not only Canada’s fruit basket, it also has a booming wine industry. There are wine festivals and tastings and wineries in the Osoyoos and Oliver areas welcome visitors. Back in the United States, north central Washington is staking out a wine industry as well, with established and new wineries from Chelan to Oroville. Although fishing and hunting remain two of the biggest recre-ational pastimes in the area, watchable wildlife activities like birding are increasing in popularity. This region offers a variety of flora and fauna for wildlife fans to explore. Even though the area is semi-desert, the region offers several fine lakes for swimming, boating, jet skiing and fishing. Water recreation choices range from the international Lake Osoyoos to internationally famous Lake Chelan, from the mighty Co-lumbia River to the undiscovered Similkameen.

If wide open spaces are the thing, the wide-open plateau is the spot; the drive between Bridgeport and Waterville, over the top as it were, is full of straight roads and big skies. Oron-do, along the Columbia River, offers fruit stands and a growing retirement and vacation spot, with new homes going along the highway to take advantage of recreation on the river and the warm summer sun. The Columbia, Methow and Okanogan rivers provide excel-lent fishing, as do the many local lakes. There’s good water for skiing or just a relaxing boat ride. With spring and the snow-melt, smaller local rivers provide plenty of good whitewater rafting, then calm down in the height of summer, making for fun tubing. How about taking a hike, or maybe a mountain bike ride, or even a horseback ride? Try one of the many fun and interesting trails in the Methow Valley— more than 400 miles for the choosing. Or try the Similkameen River Trail on the old Great Northern Railway bed and the Whistler Canyon Trail near Oroville. Both are legs of the Pacific Northwest Na-tional Scenic Trail. Summer days can hit 100 degrees or more, so one of the rivers, the swimming holes or local pools might be appealing. Golfers have a plethora of choices, from the Oroville Golf Club to Lake Woods in Bridgeport, Alta Lake near Pateros to Omak and Okanogan and Chelan, as well as fine courses in Osoyoos and Oliver. Camping and RV facilities are available at numer-ous locations on both sides of the border. Again, welcome to north central Washington and lower British Columbia. We hope you will stay a while and enjoy all the area has to offer.

Gateway to Fun & Relaxation

OROVILLE

Okanogan County’s most northerly city, Oroville is framed on the east by the scenic Okanogan Highlands, a magnet for all persuasions of outdoor enthusiasts, from birders to bikers. To the west is a mecca of lakes and rivers with plenty of shoreline camping spots, making Oroville a

convenient base for exploring the whole region. For swimming, fishing and water or jet skiing right in town there’s mammoth Lake Osoyoos where families enjoy long sunny days at the beach and stay at Veteran’s Memorial Park’s 86-unit RV/tent camping facilities. On the southern outskirts of Oroville, Whistler Canyon trailhead joins the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail that stretches from the Continental Divide to the coast. Similkameen River Trail just west of town makes a pleasant seven-mile day hike. History buffs usually stop by Oroville’s Old Depot Museum to get oriented before setting out for the area’s hill towns and ghost towns with tiny cemeteries left over from the gold rush era.Oroville’s arid landscape is rich in agriculture on the valley floor, where eleven varieties of cherries and seven kinds of apples predominate. Here you can pick up provisions right from the orchards, produce stands, wineries and Saturday farmer’s market, choose garlic from the region’s 100 varieties, and find local, grass-fed bison at the grocery store. Summer is a particularly delicious time to visit. Enjoy wine tastings summer to fall at the local wineries, live music some Saturdays at Oroville’s craft brewery and restaurants to suit many tastes, from authentic Mexican cuisine to farm to table fare, an assortment of American menus, pizza and food for travelers on the go.

For almost a century, May Festival has been drawing former Orovillians home the second weekend of the month. Other events are more recent. Now in its fifth year, the Tumbleweed Film Festival attracts audiences from beyond the region and border to enjoy international short independent films the first weekend of August. This year is the inaugural year for a Rally at the Border Blues Festival May 17 at Deep Bay Park, coinciding with the annual Wenatchee-based Run to the Border motorcycle rally, and this year bringing a Canadian contingent of motorcyclists to Oroville. As Hwy. 97’s international gateway, Oroville sees its share of American visitors headed north to reach one of Canada’s major tourist attractions, just four miles north. Here Canada’s prime wine grape growing region with an abundance of premium wineries and many golf courses attracts weekend visitors from Vancouver and vacationers from throughout Canada who fly into Kelowna International Airport for a taste of British Columbia’s Southern Okanagan and Washington’s Northern Okanogan. For more information about Oroville and the surrounding region see www.orovillewashington.com and www.oroville-wa.com.

Chesaw, Molson, Aeneas Valley, Wauconda and Bonaparte

OkanOgan highlands

T here are many small communities in the Okanogan Highlands enjoyed both for their recreational opportunities as well as their history and culture.Chesaw is an old gold mining town, was named for

Chinese miner Joe Che Saw and is 21.5 miles east of Oroville. The town has a general store with gas pumps, tavern and art gallery. The tiny town’s population has dwindled to just a handful, but each year the family-oriented July 4th Rodeo is held. In August, the town invites people to participate in one of the many activities planned around the “Hot August Nights” celebration. But there is more to Chesaw. There’s beautiful scenery and wildlife, hiking, camping and fishing in the National Forest and at nearby Lost, Beaver and Beth lakes.Molson was initially financed by John W. Molson of Canadian brewing and banking fame. The three-story brick schoolhouse is now the Molson School Museum. It houses artifacts and a souvenir shop and this year the schoolhouse, built in 1914, will be part of a centennial celebration in July. Many exhibits reflect the area’s mining and farming past and other facets of rural life. Today, the original townsite is a ghost town and is the Old Molson Outdoor Museum with a variety of early day town buildings and agricultural equipment. Both museums are sponsored by the county historical society and manned and maintained by a local group of dedicated volunteers. Fishing and camping number among the many recreation possibilities around the Aeneas Valley area. There are several small lakes located along Aeneas Valley Road -- Round, Long

and El lakes. Crawfish and Lyman lakes are not far away either.

The community of Wauconda, 24 miles east of Tonasket, is centered along Highway 20 like an oasis, inviting and colorful after the vast miles of ranches and rolling hills that surround it. There is a tiny U.S. Post Office, grocery store and café that harkens back to a simpler time.

It’s only a short drive to Lost, Beaver and Beth lakes, which offer some of the areas best fishing and camping opportunities. This same area offers some of the most varied hunting you will find anywhere. You can also enjoy boating, swimming, hiking, snowmobiling and other winter sports.

All roads lead to Tonasket

TonaskeT

T onasket is a vigorous town with people that like to work hard, as well as play hard. Many of the community’s events reflect this relationship between labor and leisure.Tonasket, with a population of 1,000, rests in the

Okanogan Valley approximately 20 miles south of the U.S.-Canadian border. It is the center of a large agricultural area, with apples, cattle and timber being the most prevalent products. It is surrounded by the Many Lakes Recreation Area famous for its fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing. The town hosts several annual events, among these are the Founder’s Day Parade and Rodeo, Father’s Day Fly-in, Okanogan River Garlic Festival, Demo Derby, Tractor Pull and summer Music in the Park.Tonasket is intersected by state Highways 97 and 20. Hwy. 97, an international roadway, links the town with Canada to the north, and California on the extreme south. Hwy. 20 is an east/west route from the Pacific Coast via the North Cascades Highway, to Republic and Spokane. The original town site of this western village was located on the west side of the Okanogan River, about one mile south of its present location. The town was once called Parry’s Ferry, or Parry’s Landing, for Watkins W. Parry, an early pioneer settler who had extensive holdings in the area. The present site of the town was purchased from the Bonaparte Land Company in 1910 and was soon platted. It was named Tonasket after Chief Tonasket of the Okanogan Tribe. Center of the Many Lakes Recreation Area

LOOMIS

L ocated 16 miles northwest of Tonasket or 16 miles southwest of Oroville, the quaint little town of Loomis rests in the center of the “Many Lakes” area. While the town is small, the area draws folks from around the state and the province of British

Columbia from the start of fishing season in the spring until the end of hunting season in late fall.

Throughout the summer, visitors come and enjoy a variety of camping sites along one of the many lakes or even in the coolness of the local mountains along a meandering stream. Loomis is the center of some of the best fishing and hunting in the state. The trout and bass are large and the mule deer abundant. Nearby lakes include Spectacle, Palmer and Whitestone. Other fishing opportunities abound in the Sinlahekin Wildlife Area in lakes and Touts Coulee Creek. Chopaka is a well-known fly-fishing-only mountain lake.

Although small, many amenities can be found within a few short blocks. Nearby wildlife is abundant with bighorn sheep and deer that can sometimes be seen strolling through town, black bear and mountain goats can also be spotted. In winter people are drawn to the area for the hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails in the mountains. For more information see www.okanogancountry.com.

Washington’s best kept secret

OKANOGAN

RiveRside

Okanogan, incorporated in 1907, became the county seat of the largest county in area in Washington in 1914.Highlights for the town include the annual county fair, Sunny Okanogan Days and

Harvest Festival.Being the county seat, Okanogan is also the home to the historic Okanogan County Courthouse. There is also the Okanogan County Museum, which features an extensive history of the county, as well as many ‘Frank Matsura’ photographs from the famous Japanese frontier photographer who made the Okanogan his home before the turn of the last century. Outside the museum is a replica of an Old West town of the early 1900s and a replica of the town’s original firehouse. Outdoor displays include farm equipment and what is believed to be the Okanogan’s oldest standing structure, a log cabin built in 1879. The museum is located adjacent to the Legion Park, which can accommodate overnight RV parking (no hookup) for a small fee.For more information see: www.okanoganchamber.com.

R iverside, about six miles north, is one of the most important towns in Okanogan County’s early history. A quaint and picturesque town, it sits between the Okanogan River and Highway 97.Riverside was once a booming commercial center.

As head of navigation for the Okanogan River, goods transported via steam paddle wheeler up the Columbia and further up the Okanogan could not get past that point. So Riverside became an important connection between the then isolated county and more populated areas of the region.

The busy hub of the Okanogan

OMAK

Omak has events planned for every season of the year.

In summer there’s the Stampede and World Famous Suicide Race which has been held since 1935. The event features four rodeo

performances followed by the Suicide Race, where horse and rider plunge down a steep embankment and cross the Okanogan River for the push to the finish line. There is also a genuine Native American encampment complete with over 100 teepees, native dance competitions with dancers in full traditional dress.

The town is full of recreation options, many at the 72-acre East Side Park. The park includes three softball fields, the Stampede and Rodeo Arena, an olympic-size pool, two soccer fields, Babe Ruth and Little League diamonds, covered picnic area, archery range, horseshoe pits, lighted tennis courts and a basketball court. Add to this acres and acres of green lawn and a 72-site full hook-up RV park and tent area, and the possibilities for fun are many.

Where the past is always present

ConConully

W ith Conconully State Park right on the reservoir, restaurants that offer everything from hot dogs to haute cuisine, full-service resorts and a variety of RV facilities and the lake just minutes away, Conconully is a

wonderful site for a family vacation any time of the year.

There are lakeside resorts, in-town lodging, several restaurants and a general store with gas pumps to serve visitors. Most of the resorts offer boat and/or canoe rentals. Some feature such amenities as pools, showers, RV parking and campsites. Kids have a good time wading in the pond and playing on the swings, slides and big toys at the state park, which has excellent camping and picnic facilities.

Spring is when the high alpine meadows boast carpets of wildflowers, accessible only to the hiker or horseback rider. Spring is also when anglers start coming to town to test their skills on the rainbow, triploids, bass and kokanee in the Conconully Lakes.

In the summer you can swim, fish, water ski, bicycle, horseback ride, take a nature hike, rock climb or just relax and enjoy the glorious scenery.

There’s lots to do in Ferry County

Republic/cuRlew

Y ou can dig for fossils at the rich Stone Rose fossil beds with the family and go home with a piece of prehistoric history, fish or swim in one of the area’s many lakes and streams and horseback ride into the forest, hike the Kettle crest trail or

one of the other 430 miles of trail in the area. the Republic area has 21 campgrounds around lakes and streams. Something is happening almost every week; stock car races every other weekend in the summer, Prospector’s day, rodeos, draft horse shows or Winterfest. located next door to the Stonerose interpretive center is the Republic Historical center. Visitors can walk through the Kaufman cabin, peruse the extensive collection of Republic’s historical photos and listen to firsthand accounts of times past from the volunteers who operate the small museum. Between Republic and curlew, alongside Highway 21 north, is the antique car and truck Museum. the museum has numerous antique cars, including a 1925 Howard cooper, one of only four ever built and a 1926 Yellow Knight, one of the last three known to exist. Built in 1903, the historic ansorge Hotel in curlew is a museum. the hotel retains many of its original furnishings and all of its charm. nestled in the forested hills of Ferry county is pristine

curlew lake. curlew lake is a favorite destination for fishermen, sporting different varieties of trout. the park features 82 campsites, some of which have power, water and sewer hook-ups, a roped-off swimming beach, boat ramp, trailer dump, restroom and hot showers. Where unique and unforgettable experiences surprise you

PRINCETON

P rinceton, Bc and tonasket, Wa have been sister cities for a quarter century, but recently have strengthened ties and discovered how much the two towns have in common through supporting one another’s major civic events.

to find Princeton, cross the border from oroville and enter osoyoos, there you will easily find Highway 3, which is known as the crowsnest Highway, heading west into the mountains. When the road dips to its southernmost point, you may see a sign that, if followed, will lead you back to the nighthawk border crossing. that was used for many years for a recreated Pony express route to deliver mail between the two sister cities, and where cowboys and outlaws dueled to make sure the packages were delivered. this event solidified the relationship between the two cities as well as with our other area neighbors.Princeton has many events around the year that can provide entertainment and activities for the entire family. events not to be missed are:• the Stan thompson Memorial Rodeo, Saturday and Sunday,

May 10-11. this year’s BcRa-sactioned event will feature Rodeo clown J. J. Harrison of Walla Walla, Washington in one of his few canadian stops.

• Princeton Racing days, June 27-29 this year. Princeton celebrates the area’s rich history with a parade downtown and caps it off with a day of horse racing at Sunflower

downs. You can either watch the races or participate in them by placing a bet on horses with real payouts. tradition calls for visitors to bet a “loonie or a twoonie” (a one or two dollar bet) to get the idea on how to bet, and then look at the program guide for more detailed ways to get involved. this is a yearly event held at the Sunflower downs race track. our communities share a love for Western culture and the rodeo tradition. We each send our rodeo queens to represent our communities at one another’s events. also, Princeton has an ambassador program, which chooses young people in their late teens to promote their town and the great people of Princeton. they represent their area throughout British columbia and are presented after a great deal of preparation and competition in a ceremony during Princeton Racing days.

• in September Princeton Fairgrounds hosts the annual Fall Fair. other events held during the year include a Winterfest christmas celebration in december, a traditional Music Festival in august and many other weekend activities and celebrations geared to interest the whole family!

Princeton has a museum displaying the history of the area and a splash park next to the river.
