    The Brief

To design and produce a design publication reflecting a key area of interest and influence throughout the final academic year, shaping my personal and professional practice.

    Brief Type

    College Set Brief

    Context & Target Audience

You will be required to undertake a period of focused, in-depth and sustained research into an area of graphic design appropriate to your design strategy. You should apply a range of research methods in the investigation of issues, practices, practitioners and companies relating to your own particular area of study. This should culminate in the design and production of a Case Study in the form of a book (or print based delivery), interactive DVD or web site.

I will be aiming my publication at my peers and tutors to show a visual reflection of my final academic year, whilst showcasing my personality and its relationship with my personal and professional design practice.

    Solution

A publication focusing on the field of work and surrounding areas of inspiration that have guided my studies from the age of 18, and will continue to do so throughout my career. The main topic touched on is that of Fashion.

The content of the publication was split into 5 sections allowed for easy structuring and relevant visuals to be reflected throughout, becoming An Archive of inspiration and research.

    Evaluation

I found this brief a really nice way to finish the academic year in terms of reflection upon my own work, and my own practice, but the direction I have travelled and progressed in throughout this year.

    Sources of Information and Inspiration

Before starting a new brief, I am always researching in several different ways - through blogs, magazines and editorial publications, books and interactions/visuals noted on a day to day basis.

For the Design Publication, I had collated a series of photography, articles and discussions and transformed these into a visual archive of information and inspirations which have informed both my personal and professional practice throughout the final academic year.

    Research: Aesthetic and Content

    My Portfolio of Work

Looking back at the body of work I have produced throughout the year also helped direct and guide the direction of the publication in regards to its content, and its aesthetic.

I feel my design style comes across strongly through my portfolio in regards to colour, print and pattern, as seen in the photograph above (Jade Clark Look Books, Vol 02.) and therefore wanted to portray this style aesthetic through the outcome.

    Fashion Related Influences and Inspirations

Looking beyond Graphic Design I looked into a major influence of mine, which has been since I started at University - Fashion. I feel Fashion as a creative field really backs into my portfolio whilst being a big part of my personality and external interests.

    Binding Process

Initially the book was to be hardback bound, as seen above. However, due to having complications and re-thinking the outcome slightly, using a soft back bind suited the format better and visually was much more appealing.

The inner pages are lay-flat bound allowing full double spread images, allowing for full-impact pages. The inners have then been covered using glitter stock, giving a bold, bright, neat, quirky and pink finish.

    Development: Book Binding

    Type and Vinyl Cutting

In order for the title of the publication and my logo to stick to the glitter stock, white vinyl was used being self-adhesive, easy to transfer and cut accurately using a vinyl cutter. The title however made the cover appear crowded, and therefore was left unused.

My logo was used instead to keep in-line with my personal branding, whilst showcasing who am I as a designer and why.

    Format and Execution

The publication has been designed to A5, Portrait format, and has been executed as a look book due to the Fashion inspirations and influences in both my personal and professional practice.

    Typography

Besom and Avenir Book Light were used throughout, keeping consistent whilst not detracting attention from the information and photography shown.

Outcome: An Archive - Design Publication

    Content

The content has been split into 5 sections to tell a visual and informative story from start to finish of the publication, showcasing my interests, thoughts and finished works in order.

The topics and content chosen not only show a link between my personal and professional practices within Extended Practice, but also the link to both the PPP and Design Context Module.

Outcome: An Archive - Design Publication

    Layout

A series of layouts have been used throughout showcasing different series of photography and information in a visually impactful, feminine, bold, daring and quirky manner, whilst keeping somewhat structured when read from start to finish.

Each chapter or topic has a title, visual and introduction page, giving context and order to the discussion. Quotes are also seen throughout adding further context and tone to the topics and areas of discussion or interest.

    Aesthetics and Tone

The aesthetic reflects that of the work produced throughout the academic year, being feminine and bold, whilst keeping in line with my personal branding.

The inner pages in particular reflect the 90s vibe which is portrayed throughout a lot of my work, using gradients and pastels, combined with illustrations, shapes, type and imagery for emphasis.
