George Frideric HANDEL20 Sonatas, Op. 1Rachel Beckett, Lisa Beznosiuk, Paul Goodwin, Elizabeth Wallfisch, Richard Tunnicliffe, Paul Nicholson
The twenty sonatas on this recording show Handel writing for the professional musicians of his London opera orchestra. Prominent bass parts give the sonatas a contrapuntal strength and vitality, and Handel keeps the elements of antiphony in admirable balance in these works. For this reason, they are among the most attractive Baroque solo sonatas and deserve their lasting popularity.

Following a rapid rise to stardom Chet Baker, in 1954, was voted best trumpeter by readers of the leading US jazz magazines – ahead of Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. The gentle poet of the trumpet – that was his image. He was a trumpeter with a decisive attacca style and lively boppy lines.

Charlie Parker, whose polyrhythmic playing and asymmetric phrasing fascinated him, and Ben Webster, who had taken him under his wing as a young musician; both influences come across significantly in Tony Scott’s playing: the thin, brittle tone of his virtuoso, up tempo bebop lines contrasted with the inimitable intimacy and warmth of his legato ballad style, a sound Scott literally breathed into the clarinet unlike anyone.

Martin BOKYANMusic for Piano (1986-2007)Donald Berman
Pianist Donald Berman’s recording of Martin Boykan’s piano music gives passionate voice to the music of one of America’s most undervalued composers. Berman describes his encounter with Boykan’s music: ‘At the start I was awed by the diamond-like purity of individual moments, daunted by the complex counterpoint…it was music that lived in my head for a long time after performing it. It is deeply personal’.

Chamber CantatasGloria Banditelli, Ensemble Aurora, Enrico Gatti

Sinfonie di Concerto Grosso; Opere per flauto e continuoAccademia della Magnifica Comunità, Enrico Casazza
Even though this collection does not include the more well-known works the Palermitan composer is posthumously famous for, these compositions are immensely important. They allow us to assess the style of Scarlatti, then nearing creative decline, which appears to be suspended between the glorious contrapuntal tradition and beautiful melodies that look decidedly towards the future.

Giovanni Battista PERGOLESI (1474-1520)
La Serva Padrona; Salve ReginaFederico Benetti, Angela Nisi, I Solisti Liriensi, Flavio Emilio Scogna
Pergolesi’s early fame and popularity can, to an extent, be attributed to his integration of musical styles. He brought the theatre into churches, and religious seriousness into theatres, even in an intermezzo: 'A Serpina penserete' is a beautiful lament that might well be sung by the Virgin Mary. His modernity consists in this, and it is still surprising now.

Un Giorno di Regno - Melodramma giocoso in two acts; Libretto by Felice RomaniMikheil Kiria, Simone Alberti, Alice Quintavalla, Angela Nisi, Marco Frusoni, Dario Ciotoli, Roberto Jachini Virgili, Marco Miglietta, Riccardo Certi, Vassalli del Barone, Diego Procoli, Belcanto Chorus, Roma Sinfonietta, Martino Faggiani, Gabriele Bonolis
Verdi’s opera Un Giorno di Regno coincided with the death of his wife, which took place shortly after the death of his two sons. The levity of the subject-matter of this opera was inevitably incompatible with Verdi’s grief. In a letter to his publisher Tito Ricordi, he saw ‘the work of a poor young man who was ill, rushed, and devastated by a horrible calamity’ mistreated by its audience.

EUROPAKONZERT 2014 From Berlin Berliner Philharmoniker, Daniel Barenboim
Otto Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor is based on William Shakespeare’s comedy of the same name, and its lively overture has long since secured a place on the concert stage. Also inspired by a Shakespearean comedy hero is Edward Elgar’s symphonic study Falstaff. We then turn from comedy to the tragic twists of fate: Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony is characterized by a sombre main theme that, for the Russian composer, symbolizes 'a complete resignation before fate, which is the same as the inscrutable predestination of fate'.
