Boniyar is a frontier village in North Kashmirs Baramulla District. It i

located 20 Kms towards west of Baramulla and approximately 80 Kmfrom Srinagar. Boniyar is located on the strategically and historicallyimportant route to Muzaffarabad which serves as the main trade linkbetween Kashmir and Muzaffarabad. The Lower Jhelum Hydro Poweproject is also located in the vicinity of the area. The area is also host tothe Lactchipora Wildlife Sanctuary.

Presence of huge projects does not assure jobs and livelihoods. DB Techidentified this gap in Boniyar wherein it was found that the area is inmuch need of improvement in terms of education, skills and overaldevelopment of the youth. Besides, people here lack confidence and

    exposure.

On August 13, 2013 DB TECH started its journey with mobilization as itfirst step. Mobilization started as process in which trainers workedtogether to address the people about the opportunity. All thstakeholders were engaged so as to make this journey more fruitful andsuccessful. Khalid Shah, the Centre Coordinator at DB Tech Boniyarecalls; it was not easy to mobilize the people, but we kept tryingindeed we didnt want to lose hope. People did not want their childrento work outside the valley, but we convinced them by understandingtheir concerns, hopes and aspirations.

We approached people, enquired about the situations, made them aware of the platform DB TECH wasproviding and finally we started our first batch. As theprocess of training the youth started, we were on thefirst step of our ultimate goal.

In Boniyar 85% of the youth are unemployed due to lackof skills, poverty and school drop-out rate. We offeredthem a better option to earn their livelihood. Finally weenrolled 95 trainees in the first batch out of which 87were trained in different domains such as Retail Bpo andHospitality. 77 trained youth were placed withinKashmir and outside in cities like Jammu, Chandigarh,New Delhi and Bangalore.

The success of the first batch provided the much-needed

impetus to the staff to engage in mobilizations in largescale. By now, DB Tech was able to establish a rapportwith the Army, Administration and local community. For Khalid, while mobilization offers greater challengesto reach out, the experience of having to train the youthof this rural locality offers ineffable joy.

DB Tech has completed three successive batches inBoniyar and it has enrolled 107 youth for the 4thbatch.DB Tech aspires to cater to the youth of the area incoming times so as to make them able and confidentenough to realize and turn their dreams into a reality.

On 26th November, DB Tech Ramgarh organizedof retail trainees to Vishal Mega Mart, Kunjwani,Jammu. The main motive of this visit was to give

practical and hands-on exposure of retail sector toour trainees that would help them understandtheir future job profile in sales & marketing andthe various dynamics at work.

Mr. Chandanjeet Singh, the retail traineraccompanied his trainees to the store in themorning. Upon reaching there, he briefed thetrainees about the functioning of the retail storesand introduced them to different sections likeclothing, cosmetics, sports goods, accessories etc.

Later, the trainees themselves visited each section

and got hands-on experience of the working of aretail store. They also had an interaction with themanagement and staff about the day-to-dayworking of the store and discipline required forthe job. Trainees were particularly happy to meetand interact with alumni of DB Tech Ramgarhwho were already working at Vishal Mega MartThe joy was mutual as the alumni took special careto all information about the job profile and theywere very courteous in responding to the queriesof their juniors. This boosted the confidence of thetrainees as it helped them aware of the atmosphere

in which they have to work in future.

For a short time the trainees were also allowed toact as sales executives. This role helped theminteract with the customers and understand theirneeds, thus brining to reality the lessons learnt inclassroom. The visit was followed up by ameaningful debrief session and interaction by thetrainer in the classroom, thus helping the traineescement their knowledge of the domain.

Like hundreds of youth across Jammu andKashmir, for Sarwar too securing a govt job wasequally a guarantee of bright future, until the dayhe joined life skill programme under Himayatscheme which helped him realize the true worth ofhis skills and hardwork.

Sarwar comes from a humble background. Hisfamily manages the daily chores through earningof the head of family (Sarwars father) who worksas a shawl weaver, working hard just to meet theboth ends.

I was desperate for a govt job. There were days

when ABA (Father in Kashmiri) would ask for moneyfrom his relatives and neighbours to feed the family. Allthe dreams and hopes of the family were endingwith every passing day as the single source ofmeagre income was not able to even fulfil the dailynutritional needs of the family. I was literallyfrustrated, says Sarwar, who is in his midtwenties.

Sarwar applied for many jobs in the govt. Sectorbut all in vain. Once I qualified written exam, butI was not selected in the interviews. After facingrejection many times, I felt disillusioned; it seemedthe end of the world. Now I had very little tochoose from; desperate enough, I finally took upodd jobs- working as a labourer from cutting woodto packing apples in boxes at his native village inBudgam district of Kashmir he added.

Apart from being disillusioned regarding his ownfuture, Sarwar would always feel worried about

the future of his two sisters. How to get a suitablebride for them? In a village like ours, marrying offdaughters and sisters is a big challenge, keeping inview all the customs and traditions related tomarriages in Kashmir.

Every cloud has a silver lining; it turned out truefor Sarwar as well. He enrolled himself in threemonth Skill development course at Himayat in DBTech Budgam centre. His decision of undergoing

Skill development course at Himayat provedto be a huge success; after the completion ofthe course, he was selected in BarbequeNation (A reputed chain of restaurants) inBengalaru.

They are paying me a handsome salary ofINR 8000 per month. I am contented with mylife now. I save and send INR 6000 to myfamily back home every month. My family ismuch happier now, which in turn makes mehappy. My Father doesnt need to ask formoney from his neighbours and relatives. Iam very thankful to almighty for this success;I also thank DB Tech team for my success

This training has changed my life forever, apart from imparting professional skills inme; it has enhanced my confidence andequipped me to take up any challenge in lifeI dream of growth at my current workplaceand I love my work. Earlier I had not beenoutside Kashmir, now I feel confident to goand work anywhere in India and acrossglobe, he added with a smile of contentment

As part of the health awareness initiative, DB TechBishnah organized a guest lecture on HIV-AIDS. Theresource person was Dr. Rishu Sharma, MDGynecology, from Govt hospital Bishnah. Shedelivered an impressive interactive lecture on HIV-AIDS awareness & informed that AIDS is thehuman immune deficiency virus. It is the virus thatcan lead to acquired immune deficiency syndrome,or AIDS. It was first discovered in 1981, but it isbelieved to have begun in Africa some 50 yearsearlier.

She informed the trainees that HIV/AIDS has nocure. Infection weakens the body so much so thatbody cannot fight the virus or get it out. When HIVenters a persons body, there may be no sign; theperson may not feel that anything is wrong withhim/her. However the virus will be multiplyinginside his/her body. Then with time the personscondition starts getting worse as the virus isincreasing inside the persons body, and the person isnot taking any drug. Eventually the entire system ofthe person breaks down completely. He does not

present with any specific symptom like in Malaria, rather, there are so many symptoms:

Fever that comes and goes, Cough, Rashes onthe body, Frequent stools (Diarrhoea),Headache, Cough, Sore in the mouth,Vomiting.

She educated trainees to take certain universalprecautions viz:

Wash hands with soap and water before andafter care

Try not to touch blood or other body fluid. If

you must, then put on gloves or plastic bags

Do away with used needles, razors, soiled

bandages and plasters (Burn or bury them). Cover all wounds with water proof plaster

Do not share toothbrushes, razor or sharpobjects

Clean up blood or other fluid spills withbleach solution

Dont be careless about sex with your partnerPractice safe sex using a condom or abstaincompletely.

At the interactive session, attended by both male and

female trainees Dr. Rishu informed that people canlive 10 years after contacting HIV if he/she livespositively. Positive living is what people livingwith HIV/AIDS can do to live longer and healthier.

She exhorted trainees to participate in risk reductionprograms. Programs exist to help people makehealthy decisions, such as negotiating condom use ordiscussing HIV status. Thereafter, she interacted withthe trainees and replied to their questions andconvinced them with suitable explanations. Thetrainees benefited from the session and are now

aware of the risks as well as precautions to be taken.

A field visit for retail trainees was organized on 5 th November atDA Mart and Wave Mall Jammu for Retail Domain. The mainpurpose was to make the trainees aware about the mall culture

practical exposure of different formats of retail sector andvarious sections of a retail store. The trainees got to learn a lotby screening different stores in Wave Mall at Jammu. Also they

also got a chance to interact with the team of D-Mart too. Formost of them, it was their first visit to a shopping mall.

Water level was rising, itreached the first and thensecond story of the building. Icould only hear shrieks and

cries of women and children. The horrible thing was that Iwas not able to comprehend what is happening. Itlooked like that River Jhelum has changed itsnormal course and it is flowing through the lanes ofRajbagh, he adds.

After struggling for his life in the office for fourdays, some local volunteers in a boat rescued Lateefto safety. However, it took him one more day toreach home. In his native village, flood water hasdestroyed his paddy fields thereby jeopardizing the

financial well being of his family.

Lateefs efforts were highly applauded and admiredby the whole DB Tech team. He was also given acash prize of INR 6000.00 for his sheer courage and

It is 6th of September, water has swept everythingacross South Kashmirs districts of Anantnag, Kulgamand Pulwama; rendering millions homeless and manymore thousands trapped in their houses surroundedby water up to scores of feet high. The news aboutsouth Kashmirs devastation reached Srinagar. As theday was closing, Lateefs fears grew with the passingtime. He was anticipating the worst.

Suddenly someone shrieked that Bund has brokenand river water is gushing inside the Rajbagh area.People started crying and wailing. I started to shiver, but I felt that water may enter the lawn of our officeand will recede by the next morning. But things turnedout to be very ugly instead; water levels were rising inthe whole of Srinagar especially in the Rajbagh area,

where our office is located. Lateef says with fear stillin his eyes.

Lateef called DB Tech office management about thesituation; they were very concerned about the safety ofLateef. They advised him to take all possible measuresto ensure his safety and security.

Aijaz Sir (centre coordinator) was calling merepeatedly; he was very concerned about my safetyand wanted to ensure that I am safe. I felt that I shouldsave some equipment of the organization. I single

handedly shifted the electric generator to the secondfloor of the building. Till 4 A.M in the night, I was intouch with Aijaz Sir via mobile phone, after which themobile network was down and we could notcommunicate any further with each other. This furthermade my fears grow he says. Lateef, although alonein the office, took the responsibility of saving the officeequipments, thus risking his own life,
