The 09 -10 Falcon Sport’s season begins a new chapter at Daytona State College. The addition of men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams with Steve Lochte as Head Coach, has generated a new level of excitement about the future successes of Daytona State athletes.
As this season gets underway, I look forward to the energy, excitement and team spirit that surrounds these programs and our college campus.
The hard work and dedication of our student athletes pays off as they continue to achieve success not only in the game, but also in the classroom. In the 2008-2009 season we had numerous academic success stories including eight NJCAA Academ-ic All-Americans (achieving a GPA of 3.6 or better) and four NJCAA Distinguished Academic All-Americans (achieving a GPA of 3.8 or better).
The pride we have in our athletic program is well deserved. Exceptional athletic fa-cilities, staff and student-athletes, unparalleled athletic training support, a unique mentoring program, the Academic Support Center, an academic advising system, and energetic fans that, when combined, make Daytona State College Athletics a force to be reckoned with!
I invite you to join us at our games, tournaments and competitions this season and catch the fever of Falcon Athletics. Come support your Falcons!

Greetings!
Our Intercollegiate Athletic program is one that we are very proud of on many levels . We have a program that is recognized statewide and nationally for the academic successes of our students and teams . Since we consider our Athletic Department one of our academic departments these accomplishments don’t happen by accident . Through our student participation in our athletic teams the fac-ulty, coaches and staff instill values that our students will benefit from for a lifetime, and ultimately will carry with them as they finish their formal education and become contribut-ing members of our communities . This is a great investment for our collective future and we support our athletic program fully . I encourage you to support your Falcon Athletic teams by attending games, partici-pating in support activities, providing spon-sorships, other financial donations, and by simply telling others about the fantastic Fal-cons sporting events being offered . Our student-athletes and the entire athlet-ic program welcome your support and partici-pation . Our pledge to you is that we will con-tinue to provide teams that give 110% both in the classroom and in their specific athletic venues . Come experience for yourself the Daytona State College Falcons as they work hard to soar higher . Go FalconS!

Athletic Director’s Message Vice President’s MessageAs we begin another new academic year we also look forward to our upcoming ath-letic year and sports teams’ participation and events with great anticipation . This excite-ment is heightened by the excellent history of the Daytona State College athletic program and its student-athletes including two of our teams winning state and national recognition for their academic accomplishments during the 2008/09 academic year (baseball and golf) . The enthusiasm is also at a high level due to the reinstatement of our men’s and women’s Swimming & Diving teams . The ad-dition of these teams brings our department total to seven teams and we now serve the needs of well over 150 student-athletes an-nually . As we kicked off the addition of the Swim-ming & Diving program last spring we did so with a unique fundraiser that we called the Splashdown at Daytona State College which was held April 30th in the L . Gale Lemerand Center . This event featured a 200 IM swim event that was attended by well over 750 fans, spectators and sponsors . The featured participants were Ryan Lochte (2009 USA Swimmer of the Year and 2004 and 2008 USA Olympic Gold Medalist); and Charlie Lydecker (Senior Vice President of Brown and Brown Insurance) and well accomplished na-tional swimmer in his age group . This event was a great way to kick off the reinstatement of the Swimming & Diving teams while gener-ating significant excitement and interest while also raising approximately $150,000 . The athletic department is proud of our “academic first approach” with our students and the accomplishments are many . Here are just a few of those accomplishments from 2008/09:
• The entire student-athlete cohort com-bined for a 3 .34 grade point average during the 2008/09 academic year – the highest ever for the athletic program .
• Fifty-four student-athletes earned Aca-demic All-Conference honors (3 .0+ GPA’s) .
• Forty-one student-athletes earned Aca-demic All-State honors (3 .3+ GPA’s) .
• Eightstudent-athletesearnedNJCAAAc-ademic All-American honors (3 .6+ GPA’s) .
• Fourstudent-athletesearnedNJCAADis-tinguished Academic All-American honors (3 .8+ GPA’s) .
• For the thirdconsecutiveyear themen’sbaseball teamearned theNJCAAacademicTeam-of-the-Year award for posting the na-tions best cumulative GPA (3 .59) .
• For the third consecutive year the wom-en’s golf team earned the FCCAA female aca-demic Team-of-the-Year award for posting the states best team cumulative GPA (3 .57) .
• The women’s golf team earned runner-up status during the 2009 NJCAA nationalchampionships hosted locally by Daytona State College .
This year promises to be an exciting year for all of our sports teams . I encourage you to get out and see some exciting events and support our student-athletes in all of their en-deavors while they are here with us at Day-tona State College . These are exciting times for our students and they need our collective support.Joinmeandlet’smakethisyearthebest ever for our athletic program at Daytona State College . I look forward to seeing you at the games .
Go Falcons!

T he Daytona State College health, well-ness, fitness, recreation and athletics facilities are some of the best nation-
wide . The state-of-the-art facilities are one of the many reasons that our athletic programs are a force to be reckoned with . It is no lon-ger a secret that Daytona State College boasts some of the best facilities available at a state college . The L . Gale Lemerand Health, Well-ness and Community Education Center onthe Daytona Beach Campus houses the gym-nasium, fitness center, aquatic center and re-lated classrooms and academic programs . Daytona State’s playing fields and courts
are also among the best in the state college system . A 1,000 seat gymnasium provides a quality environment, and this small arena turns very loud with the help of our cheer-leaders, pep band, spirit team, and excited fans . The intercollegiate locker rooms are very comfortable yet practical as they serve the needs of the student-athletes on a daily basis . The baseball complex, one of only two fields in the Mid-Florida Conference with lights, has a permanent press box, a conces-sion stand and a section of chair back seat-ing . The softball complex which also has a lighted field has been recently updated to in-clude the planting of tropical indigenous palm trees lining the outfield fence to give the field that true Florida atmosphere . Both baseball and softball fields are laser leveled each year late in the fall to provide the best surface and drainage capability for the spring seasons, and both ball fields are maintained daily by the college Facilities Services Division . The 5,500 square foot Fitness Center is a true showpiece for the students and has just recently been updated (August 2007) with a

The Falcons Support Team is made up of dedicated professionals that all form a carefully designed safety net for the student-athlete cohort . These individuals all play critically important roles on
a daily basis in helping ensure that all the support is in place for our student-athletes to be successful in their efforts while at Daytona State College . The focus here will range from academic support, arranging charter
bus travel, providing strength and resistance training opportunities along with aquatic centerconditioning, to a whole array of other various student support functions .

The new line includes a 19-piece Cybex VR-3 circuit and 3 .2 tons of free weights . Additionally, a comprehensive car-diovascular workout is available using the 27-piece aerobic arena that consists of stair climbers, elliptical trainers, treadmills, recumbent and stationary bikes, rowing machines, Airdynes, and spinning bikes com-plete with audiovisual and DVD programs . Group exercise classes also are offered in cardio cross training, core strength, water aerobics and yoga . A 25-yard-by-25-meter competitive pool and a 3,300 square-foot support facility offer a complete aquatic experience . The pool is open year-round, is humidity and climate controlled, and is staffed with certified lifeguards . In 2007/08 the Whisper Oaks Villas condominiums were purchased by the Daytona State College Foundation to provide quality housing to our student-athletes . This complex is located in close proximity to the Daytona Beach Campus to allow students an off-campus housing en-vironment, but still close enough to get back and forth to campus with extremeease.Now,allDaytonaStatescholarshipstudent-athleteswillbe living at the same housing complex allowing for a more full and holistic experience for this cohort . As you can see, the range and quality of the facilities, playing fields and courts, along with the Whisper Oaks Villas housing complex only reinforces the total commitment Daytona State College has made to-ward intercollegiate athletics and promotes the success of the Falcon student-athletes .

The community Service leadership committee was established in Fall of 2003 with the purpose of organizing what was an existing con-cept into a formal process . The student-athlete based committee met initially to discuss ideas for possible community service projects and to set goals for the year . The 2008-09 Committee continued with this process and once goals were set, met regularly to report progress . The goal for the year was for each team to do at least one community ser-vice project and two major projects together . Members of the commit-tee, which consisted of one freshman and one sophomore from each team, were required to submit a report to the committee coordinator . They were also encouraged to take pictures and/or collect materials from the event . The reports and materials are kept in binder for refer-ence by Committee Coordinator .

Community ConneCtionsFalcons in Action Community Service
Building relationships that make a differenceThe success of our community depends on the academic and social education that young people receive today . With this in mind, Falcons in action, a mentoring program, was created using volunteers to provide additional support for Daytona State College student-athletes . The program helps ensure that stu-dents receive the assistance and guidance necessary to succeed in college and in life . Over the past six years, Falcons in Action mentors have played a vital role in increas-ing student achievement and self-esteem . The benefits for students are immense and the lessons they learn from their mentors of-ten motivate them to be more productive stu-dents and citizens now and in the future . Volunteers have the opportunity to truly make a difference in a student’s life by pro-viding one-on-one attention and developing enduring relationships . Additionally, mentors meet highly skilled athletes and get to know the personal side of the students . Many men-tors attend the student’s games and lend support to their efforts . Through their partici-
pation in this program, the mentors are able to join in the student’s accomplishments on the playing court, field or course . The Falcons in Action mentors come from all walks of life but share the common goal of wanting to help students achieve success in college . Mentors are individuals such as retirees, college employees, recent college graduates and others who are able to give the gift of time . Businesses and organizations are also participating in the program . All volun-teers attend an orientation session to provide them with the information and training that will guide them in their role . Most mentors spend one hour per week with the students; however, schedules are arranged to accom-modate volunteers and to promote continuing relationships between the mentors and stu-dents .
For additional information about this program or to find out how you can begin making a difference as a mentor, contact Will Dunne at (386) 506-4486 or [email protected].

Students have the opportunity to complete prerequisite courses and gain valuable hands-on clinical and field experience, be-ginning with the first semester on campus. The ATEP Internship Program provides a Student Athletic Trainer (SAT) from a 4-year athletic training program the oppor-tunity to gain valuable experience in a typi-cal job setting. The Athletic Training Intern is also challenged with many tasks that are intended to help prepare them for taking the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) Exam.

The Daytona State College Women’s Golf Team carries a tremendous amount of con-fidence heading into the spring season . The 2009-2010 fall season was the most suc-cessful in the history of the 12 year program, as it was filled with record breaking scores that resulted in team and individual victories . The Lady Falcons competed in five tourna-ments in the fall and recorded two team wins, two individual wins, a team 2nd place win and numerous other top individual finishes, allwhilecompetingagainststrongNCAApro-grams . The fall schedule provided the team with some of the strongest competition to date and they showed that they were up for the challenge . With four out of five of the tour-namentsbeingNCAADivisionIevents,andthese players consistently posting top finish-es, they have proved that they can compete at this top level . Playing at this level motivates these players to work hard and strive to reach their true potential . This year’s squad is very young, as we have five freshmen and three sophomores . The freshman class this year is the most talented group ever recruited . Their talent showed as the top-three players for the fall were all fresh-men.MitsukiKatahirafromTokyo,Japanledthis group of freshmen by posting an impres-sive 73 .7 scoring average for the fall season
and recorded one individual title and three
other top-five finishes . Amy West from Valrico,
FL, also a freshman, posted a scoring average
of 75 for the fall and recorded one individual
title and one other top-five finish . Freshman,

top-10 finishes. Sophomore Jennifer Gartin
from Port St . Lucie, FL, a Stetson University

the fall was sophomore Ashley Mooney from

Port St . Lucie, FL, who posted a 77 .7 scoring average and freshman, Barbara Malone from West Palm Beach, FL, who posted a scoring average of 80 . Other players for the Lady Fal-cons include sophomore Lauren Benetti from Celebration, FL, with an 80 scoring average and Cassie Cleary from Punta Gorda, FL, with an 82 scoring average . The Lady Falcons goal this 2009-2010 seasonistowintheNJCAANationalCham-pionship and to continue their success in the classroom . The Lady Falcons have won the NJCAA National Championship three times, but their last victory came in 2005 . This group of players is determined to regain NationalChampionship status and is poised to win in impressive fashion . The Lady Falcons are currently#1intheNJCAArankingsandarevery positive about their chances of winning theNationalChampionshipinMay.Academi-cally the women’s golf team has shown that they are equally dedicated to their studies as they are to their sport . The Lady Falcons have won the FCCAA Female Academic Team of the Year award three years in a row and also place 2nd nationally in 2008-2009 with a 3 .57 team GPA . The 2009-2010 spring season consists of fivetournaments,theNJCAAregionVIIIqual-ifier,andthe2009NJCAANationalChampi-onship . Our confidence from the successes in the fall will carry us into the spring season . Our impressive finishes and scores should continue with hard work and dedication to improve in the off-season .

Celebrating her 10th year with Daytona State College, Alison Mohr begins her first season as the Co-Head Softball Coach with the Lady Falcons . Alison also currently serves as the Academic & Compliance Coordinator for the Falcon athletic department . “It’s important for these students to have someone who under-stands what they go through on a day to day basis and the emotional roller coaster they are experiencing . My passion lies in helping student-athletes tap into the resources avail-able for them to reach their goals academi-cally, athletically and in life .” Formerly an assistant coach for the Lady Falcons from 2003-2006, Alison served un-der her father, Coach Chuck Baylor . A native of Daytona Beach, she played for her dad at Spruce Creek High School where she gradu-ated in 1994 . As a Lady Hawk her team won four straight conference titles and one district championship, Volusia County’s first . Coach Profiles•
The Daytona State Coaching staff welcomes
back Alison Mohr and Chuck Baylor this Sea-
son . “I am excited to have the help of both
coaches this season . Coach Baylor brings a lot
of experience to the staff and will be a great
help to our hitters . Coach Mohr has always
been a great mentor to our players and we are
happy to have her out on the field to help out
our infield . Mike Sokol will be back in the bull-
pen with our pitchers . He has had great suc-
cess developing our pitchers over the years .”
The Lady Falcons return five position play-
ers from the 2010 season all of which were
FCCAA All-Academic Team members last year .
The returners include pitcher, Richelle Raley
who will lead the Falcons from the mound this
season and Kayla Denham (FCCAA Mid-Florida
Conference Second Team) who will be taking
charge in center field . Also returning are Kaley
Brosky (FCCAA Mid-Florida All-Conference
Second Team), Aubrey O’Brien, and Jordan
Mangrich who will be working together on the
infield.“Eachofthesegirlsareathreatonthe
base path as well with good speed and game
smarts .”
The Falcons have several new faces on the
roster . The talented group of incoming fresh-
man brings athleticism and flexibility to our
lineup as most are capable of playing more
than one position . Although the majority are
new to college athletics they are eager to take
their game to the next level .
SeasonOutlook
Offensively, the Falcons look to be stron-
ger than last year . “We have some good hit-
ters coming in this year that should help drive
inourspeedysophomores.”New local talent
this year includes Courtney Sherrill, a standout
from Deltona High School . Defensively; Alex
Brown and Erin Wolfe will take turns behind
the plate . Kelli Blanton will help cover the cor-
ners at first and third base and Marissa Blake
will bring depth to our middle infield .
There are two new pitchers on the roster
this year, Amber Reynolds and Celia Blome .
“They can be an offensive threat as well and
will complement our staff working behind our
sophomore, Richelle Raley .”
Expectations for this upcoming year are
high as our sophomores have a full year of ex-
perience and are driven to improve upon last
year’s record . This year’s team should return
to the state tournament surpassing last sea-
son’s finish and advance to the Atlantic District
Championship as a force to reckon with .
The coaching staff and all of our student-
athletes take both academics and athletics
together seriously . Academically we plan to
maintain or exceed last year’s team GPA of
3 .30 . With team work and focus in the class-
room and on the field we will succeed . The out-
look is positive for another successful season
at Daytona State College .
