It has long been recognized that track and field, along with cross country, have been sports with a high degree of success at the state level in Kansas prep competitions.

Numerous teams, and more individuals, have captured state titles in their respective sport(s) and events.

So it come as no surprise that three of the latest southwest Kansas ‘stars’ have aligned them-selves with a Division I university in Kansas — specifically Wichita State University — for the future.

All three now seniors — Jonathan DuVall of Garden City, Paige Wells of Wichita County in Leoti, and Tate Annis of Ulysses — signed letters of intent to become new additions in the fall to the Shocker program.

Wells will compete in both cross country and track and field while DuVall and Annis will focus solely on their events in track and field.

WSU head track and field coach Steve Rainbolt, himself a Kansas native (Prairie Village) says that the foundation of his program’s success over his 13 years at the helm rests with recruiting Kansas athletes.

“We have built this program on Kansas athletes, from Kansas City to Wichita to small towns,” Rainbolt said. “Kansas, despite its small population, has a rich history of producing out-standing track and field athletes. We may have some stars from around the country or from outside the country, but the bedrock of our program comes from right here in Kansas.”

The numbers back up Rainbolt’s phi-losophy — 49 men and 41 women, 90 in all — comprise the roster that has a total of 127 on its current team (71 percent).

DuVall, who was a double-gold medal winner in Class 6A at the 2012 state track meet in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, will be groomed for the 400-meter hurdles and the 110-meter highs at the collegiate level, according to Rainbolt. Annis, one of the top Class 4A long jumpers and 200-meter sprint-ers, will focus on those same two events when he arrives in Wichita. Wells, one of the top middle distance runners in Class 2A through her previous three years, will be evaluated to see whether or not she will remain at the middle distances or developed into a true dis-tance runner, where they run the 5,000- and 10,000-meters.

“Each of the three has their own special skills that we are excited about,”

Rainbolt said. “The thing that has worked well for us through the years is that once we have them here, and focus on just one sport for the entire year, training both indoors and out-doors, is that we can see them develop and improve their times and distances.”

Annis had season bests of 10.82 and 22.10 in the 100- and 200-meter dashes while his specialty in the long jump produced a mark of 22-10. DuVall had personal best times of 14.50 and 38.92 seconds in the two hurdle races while Wells established marks of 2:21.79 in the 800, 5:16.16 in the 1,600 and 11:57.90 in the 3,200 meters her junior year. But Wells ran an 11:42.22 in the 3,200-meters as a sophomore.

Each of the three have various reasons for signing with Wichita State, but universally all said they liked the coaches, the teammates they will have and the atmosphere

that they experienced when they had their official visits to the cam-pus.

“They made it feel like home, a family atmosphere,” DuVall said. “They made me feel like I was really part of it, and not just another number to be recruited.”

Rainbolt said DuVall will have an adjustment to make with the fact the hurdles are set at a height higher than he presently runs at the high school level.

“We think he’s a terrific tal-ent in the hurdles,” Rainbolt said of the GCHS standout. “He’s a good athlete and we feel he can compete in both and be success-ful down the road in the Missouri Valley Conference.”

DuVall said he was glad to have the decision for college made prior to the beginning of his senior track season (which begins today in Ulysses).

“It takes a lot of the pressure off and now I feel like I can just go out and run and compete,” DuVall said.

Wells said she had visited with current WSU distance run-ner Emily Finlea of Colby, a fel-low-competitor of hers in recent years, about going to WSU.

“We texted back and forth quite a bit and she really likes it there,” Wells said of Finlea, who was a top Class 4A runner for the Lady Eagles. “The recruiting was kind of stressful because I just wanted everything to be perfect. I dreamed of running at K-State, but when I went there it just felt too big. When I went to WSU, they treated me like a recruit and not just another run-ner. It just felt like the right fit for me.”

Division-II Emporia State, but when WSU offered, it allowed her to fulfill her dream of competiting at the D-I level.

“It’s just pretty exciting to be going to a good school, with a good program and know that they’ll look after my best inter-ests,” Wells said.

Annis made his impressions on the WSU coaching staff when he fared well at the 2012 K.T. Woodman Invitational in early April.

“I had a good jump there and must have stood out from there,” Annis said. “They started calling, and then came and watched me at a couple of meets. They showed the most interest in me. They were always calling, and were pretty much on the money with everything I was looking for. Everything went so well on my visit there. Nobody else could top what they were saying to me. I visited other schools and I just didn’t see the same things, feel the things that I felt about WSU. They did a lot of 1-on-1 recruiting and didn’t throw me in with a lot of other recruits like some other schools did.”

All three plan to pursue degrees in vari-ous fields — DuVall in business manage-ment, Wells in biology which she plans to use to become a medical lab technologist and Annis has his sights set on a mechani-cal engineering degree.

For Rainbolt, it represents a strong base for the future in southwest Kansas recruit-ing.

“The best thing for us is to have kids come in here and then become our best recruiters when they go home,” Rainbolt said. “We’re excited to have all three of these coming to WSU next year and can’t wait to see how they develop over the next four years.”

With their senior seasons just getting under way this week, the three seniors are all keeping a watchful eye on their final year at the prep level.

For the first time in its 20-year history, the Garden City High School girls softball program will have a new coach in the dugout.

When the 2013 season gets under way on April 5 at Wichita North, the Lady Buffs will be guid-ed by Trina Moquett, who for the previous two seasons had coached the Garden City Community College Lady Busters to highly successful seasons.

John Ford, who had been the only coach for the Lady Buffs since the program was started in 1994, retired after the 2012 season in which they posted a 13-9 record and finished runner-up to Maize in the Class 6A regional.

During his 19 seasons, the Lady Buffs compiled a 239-169 record, with his best season coming in 2010 when the Buffs compiled a 19-3 record.

Moquett inherits a squad that includes seven seniors, two

juniors and a pair of sophomores.“It’s been good so far,” Moquett

said of the preseason practices that began near the end of February. “We’ve gone back to a lot of the basics and implement-ing my ideas and my philosophies and trying to develop them with the girls.”

Heading the list of returners are 2012 Telegram All-Area first team performer senior Sierra Scott and second-team selection junior Jamie St. Clair.

Scott, who mostly played right field for the Buffs a year ago, had a sensational junior season, bat-ting .409, with a .758 slugging per-centage. She had 16 RBIs and had 12 extra base hits, including three home runs, five triples and four doubles. Her five triples tied a school record. In the field, she was flawless, committing no errors while playing in all 22 games for the Buffs.

“Right now, I’m just trying to get to know the girls, they’re just trying to get to know me,” Moquett said. “I don’t have anything set in stone as far as a lineup right now. I do know that our

pitchers will be Kori Thornton (senior) and Dusti Befort (sophomore). Alyssa Greenlee will be catching, but other than those, we’re putting players in dif-ferent positions, trying them out and seeing where they fit best to meet our needs.”

St. Clair, who played in the out-field as well as third base and shortstop, is among a number of players who Moquett feels can play multiple positions.

Senior Casey Curran is another player who has seen action at dif-ferent positions, and earlier in her softball career, also had pitched. Junior Kennedy Brunson also has previous pitching experience. MeKayla Guerrero returns where she primarily played shortstop a year ago and has been a steady hitter in the past.

Other seniors include Jordan Arellano and Jada Schmale. Brunson and St. Clair are the lone juniors while Shea Nordb joins Befort as the two sophomores.

A year ago, the Garden City Buffaloes boys’ tennis team sent all six of its players to the Class 6A state tour-nament.

That was the good news. The not so good news is that none of them made it to the final day of competition.

Graduated senior Blake Stucky man-aged one match win as did doubles partners Brennan and Denton Keller. Brennan also graduated, and 10th-year coach Rod Robinson welcomes back the remaining four players.

The Buffs open their 2013 season on Saturday at the Great Bend Invitational. Play gets under way at 9 a.m.

Brian Clarke, who has teamed with Evan Riggs in doubles for three sea-sons, will probably play at No. 1 singles, according to Robinson.

But for the opener, Robinson said the Buffs will be without Clarke, who will serve a one-tournament suspen-sion for violation of team rules.

“He will miss one tournament,” Robinson said of Clarke.

Sebastian Kyaw returns at No. 2 singles after posting a 23-12 record his freshman season. Riggs and Denton Keller, both seniors, will be teamed at No. 1 doubles while newcomers senior Brevin Irwin and sophomore Dozie Ekweariri will play at No. 2 doubles.

“I think we will be very competitive with this lineup,” Robinson said. “Getting four of the state qualifiers from last year back will make us a strong team.”

When Riggs teamed with Clarke, they compiled a 26-10 record and were state qualifiers each of their first three seasons. Keller and his older brother put together a 30-10 record in 2012. Over their three-year doubles career, Riggs and Clarke were 73-43, going 22-17, 25-16 and 26-10.

The Buffs, who were runners-up in the Western Athletic Conference, are looking forward to seeing how their pre-

season preparation will go for the opener.Kyaw will move into the No. 1 singles spot for Saturday

and Ekweariri will play No. 2 singles. Riggs and Keller remain at No. 1 doubles while Eric Barragan will join Irwin at No. 2 doubles.

“All the players have been looking for-ward to this season, especially the three seniors,” Robinson said. “We will find out where we stand Saturday at Great Bend. Then, we will have a week off to work on anything that we need to improve before we have a wild week (April 9, 11 and 13) when we play three tournaments.”

Casey Wise has been a part of the Garden City High School girls swimming program for 14 years, the last 11 serving as the Lady Buffs’ head coach.

The 2013 season, which was slated to open today at the Garden City Family YMCA with a triangular against Western Athletic Conference teams Dodge City and Liberal, will offer Wise an opportunity to perhaps have one of his best squads in recent memory.

A year ago, the GCHS team qualified all three of its relay teams for the Class 6A state meet, and all six of those relay swim-mers return.

That group consists of seniors Katelyn Greene, Alexa Shaffer and Jacie Sullivan, junior Samantha Norton and sophomores Claire Schmidt and Lindsay Bradstreet.

“It’s the last go-round for the seniors and I expect them and the others to be better than they were a year ago,” Wise said of Greene, Shaffer and Sullivan. “Depth-wise, it will be one of our most talented groups. I think we’ve had some individu-als in the past who could swim faster, but I’m not

sure we’ve had this kind of depth before.”Wise expects his team to compete for the top

spot in the Western Athletic Conference.“We had one of our better seasons last year,

and we’ve been swimming against really tough competition,” Wise said. “I think that kind of com-petition really prepares us for being able to swim well when it comes time for the league and for qualifying for state.”

In addition to the relay teams, all six of those individuals also will swim individual events. Greene will compete in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke; Shaffer will swim the 200- and 500-yard freestyle; Sullivan will be in the 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle; Schmidt is slated for the 200 individual medley (four different strokes) and the 100 freestyle; Norton the 200 individual medley, 100 butterlfy and the 50 freestyle and Bradstreet is set for the 100 breaststroke and the 500 freestyle.

“We’ve done some time trials thus far and I’ve been impressed with their times,” Wise said. “They’ve been fairly quick for preseason, so we’re anxious to see how they do against live compe-tition.”

Wise is carrying 24 swimmers on the 2013 var-sity roster and he says the group has worked hard in preparation for the season opener.

“They’re eager to get going and ready to get into the season,” Wise said. “They’re kind of tired swimming against each other and are ready to

move on.”

Two seasons ago, the Garden City High School Lady Buffs soccer team had its 46-game Western Athletic Conference winning streak snapped by Dodge City.

A year ago, the Lady Buffs struggled during the season, finishing with an 8-8-1 overall record, a first-round departure from the Class 6A postseason playoffs and a 3-3-1 mark in the WAC.

That came with veteran coach Joaquin Padilla dealing with a young, inexperienced team that eventually also suffered injuries to key players.

That young team is a now more sea-soned, and with it Padilla hopes that the 2013 season will promise to return the Lady Buffs to their prominence in the WAC.

“We have a few returning starters that we will be counting on,” Padilla said.

The biggest scoring threat who returns is senior Haley Brennaman, who led the team in goals in 2012 with 12 and also con-tributed 4 assists.

“We’ll have to fill some spots with fresh-men, but I feel good about the skills. We will be a team that just gets better as the season progresses.”

The Lady Buffs already have played two games, going 1-1. They lost an early season opener to powerhouse Wichita Northwest, 5-0, but came back on Tuesday to defeat Rose Hill, 5-3, on penalty kicks (3-1) to win their opening game of the Goddard Invitational. They were scheduled to face Bishop Carroll, one of the state’s top-ranked Class 5A teams at 7 p.m. today in the semifinals of the invi-tational.

“I think we’re gonna be competitive,” Padilla said. “We’re hoping to get back to where we can win the WAC and surprise some people at the end of the season.

Other returning starters for Padilla include senior defender Greta Peters, junior midfielders Maria Rodriguez and Jacksenie Tornero, sophomore forward Megan Martinez and junior defender Enneliese Alcantar.

Freshman Ashlee Richman has moved into the goalkeeper position and on Tuesday rejected three penalty kicks by Rose Hill to help the Lady Buffs secure the win.

The numbers seem to be speaking for themselves when evaluating the health of the Garden City High School track and field team.

More than 150 athletes showed up for preseason practice, greeting head coach Mike Smith and his staff nearly a month ago.

The numbers will provide Smith and his staff with greater flexibility in filling out entries in meets where they will com-pete, creating scoring opportunities which should enable the Buffs to better compete for team titles.

The Lady Buffs are the defending Western Athletic Conference champions and were second in the Class 6A region-als a year ago, only to struggle at the state meet where Kayla Dolla placed fifth in the 800-meters (2:21.4) and the 4x800-meter relay team of Alex Miller, Neysa Harman, Kayla Doll and Katy Doll also finished fifth with a time of 9:50.3.

Headlining the boys squad is senior Jonathan DuVall, who brought home gold medals in the 110- and 300-meter hurdle races while establishing himself as one of the premier hurdlers in Kansas. He clocked times of 14.5 in the 110s and 39.0 in win-ning the state titles. His season best in the 300s was 38.92.

“I feel like overall we’ll be more com-petitive with the numbers we’ve got to develop,” Smith said. “Obviously, we’ve got a lot of talented girls returning, especially in the distance races (Miller was second in the Class 6A cross country in the fall in leading the Lady Buffs to a second place team finish). We’re excited to get the sea-son started and see where we are with the different events.”

The Buffs were slated to get their 2013 campaign started today with a 3 p.m. meet at Ulysses.

In addition to DuVall, the Buffs’ boys return state competitor Tristan Nanninga and Pedro Dominguez in the high jump; Dusty Tempel, fifth in the long jump (21-3); Brett Cady in the pole vault (12-6), good for seventh place.

While she didn’t medal, sophomore Katy Doll was ninth in the 1,600-meters and 10th in the 3,200-meters. Taryn Tempel returns to compete in the 400-meters (10th at state) and also will compete in the long jump, 200-meters and the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays.

Tempel’s brothers — Dusty and Greyson — comprise the triplets in the family and both of the boys will be part of the Buffs’ 4x100-meter relay team. Greyson is slated to run the 100-meters and two relays while Dusty also will run the 200-meters and run a leg on the 4x100 and 4x400 teams.

“I think we’ve done a good job of creat-ing the interest and environment for the kids to be successful and we’re excited to see how we stack up this year,” Smith said. “The kids have been working extremely hard, they’re committed to doing their best.”

Jacob Thomas, who was the Buffs’ No. 1 runner in the fall cross country season, will be back to run both the 1,600 and 3,200-meters. Sophomore Taylor Linenberger is expected to continue to improve in the pole vault after she clared 9-0 in her freshman season and her first year to compete in the event.

Taylor Caine qualified for the state meet in the girls javelin and senior Johna McClelland will seek to make it to state in the shot put.

“Without a doubt, our girls distance runners and relay teams will be among the best we have to put out on the track,” Smith said. “But we’re trying to evaluate all the kids, put them where we think they can help for team points and see how things progress.”

The Buffs will host their own Garden City Invitational on April 30 at the new Buffalo Stadium track.

Missing from the Lady Buffs’ roster is Leslie Ford, daughter of the retired coach. She would have been looking at her senior season, but graduated in December from GCHS and opted to sign with Kansas City, Kan. Community College and enroll there for the spring semester. She and Thornton had com-bined to form a formidable pitching combo each of the past three seasons.

“Not having Leslie hurts the team, the program, but I respect her decision and wish her the best,” Moquett said of Ford’s deci-sion. Thornton compiled a 7-3 won-loss record a year ago.

Moquett said she was happy with the leadership shown thus far from her senior-laden team.

“Anytime you’ve got that kind of leadership, they can really help grow the younger girls,” Moquett

said. “The girls have been open and have been receptive to my approach and they have been eager to learn. Their attitude and work ethic has been great.”
