Greetings:
Our Intercollegiate Athletic program is one that we are very proud of on many levels . We have a program that is recognized statewide and nationally for the academic successes of our students and teams . Since we consider our athletic department one of our academic departments these accomplishments don’t happen by accident . Through our student participation in our athletic teams the fac-ulty, coaches and staff instill values that our students will benefit from for a lifetime, and ultimately will carry with them as they finish their formal education and become contribut-ing members of our communities . This is a great investment for our collective future and we support our athletic program fully . I encourage you to support your Falcon Ath-letic teams by attending games, participating in support activities, providing sponsorships, other financial donations, and by simply tell-ing others about the fantastic Falcons sport-ing events being offered . Our student-athletes and the entire athletic program welcome your support and partici-pation . Our pledge to you is that we will con-tinue to provide teams that give 110% both in the classroom and in their specific athletic
venues . Come experience for yourself the Daytona State College Falcons as they work hard to soar higher .

As we begin another new academic year we also look forward to our upcoming athletic year and sports teams’ participation and events with great anticipation . This excitement is heightened by the excellent history of the Daytona State College athletic program and its student-athletes includ-ing two of our teams’ once again winning state and national recognition for their academic accomplishments during the 2009/10 academic year (baseball and softball) . Each year, the Florida Community Colleges Activities Association (FCCAA) selects the top academic teams in the state system by gender, and the commitment at Daytona State College to help our students be successful in the classroom has been recognized by recent awards presented to some of our sports teams . In fact, during the past four academic years the Daytona State College athletic teams have won eight combined state academic titles as follows:
fCCAA Men’s State Academic Titles, and NJCAA National Academic Titles: • FCCAA Men’s Academic Team of the Year – Men’s Baseball, 2006 - 2007, (3 .49 GPA) • NJCAA Baseball National Academic Team of the Year, 2006 - 2007, (3 .49 GPA) • FCCAA Men’s Academic Team of the Year – Men’s Baseball, 2007 - 2008, (3 .53 GPA) • NJCAA Baseball National Academic Team of the Year, 2007 - 2008, (3 .53 GPA) • FCCAA Men’s Academic Team of the Year – Men’s Baseball, 2008 - 2009, (3 .58 GPA) • NJCAA Baseball National Academic Team of the Year, 2008 - 2009, (3 .58 GPA) • FCCAA Men’s Academic Team of the Year – Men’s Baseball, 2009 - 2010, (3 .57 GPA) • NJCAA Baseball National Academic Team of the Year, 2009 - 2010, (3 .57 GPA)
fCCAA Women’s State Academic Titles: • FCCAA Women’s Academic Team of the Year – Women’s Golf, 2006 - 2007, (3 .59 GPA) • FCCAA Women’s Academic Team of the Year – Women’s Golf, 2007 - 2008, (3 .35 GPA) • FCCAA Women’s Academic Team of the Year – Women’s Golf, 2008 - 2009, (3 .57 GPA) • FCCAA Women’s Academic Team of the Year – Women’s Softball, 2009 - 2010, (3 .17 GPA)
The athletic department is proud of our “academic first approach” with our students and the accomplishments are many. here are just a few of those accomplishments from 2009/10: • The entire student-athlete cohort combined for a 2 .96 grade point average during the 2009/10 academic year . • Fifty-nine student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference honors (3 .0+ GPA’s) . • Forty-eight student-athletes earned Academic All-State honors (3 .3+ GPA’s) . • Twelve student-athletes earned NJCAA Academic All-American honors (3 .6+ GPA’s) . • Seven student-athletes earned NJCAA Distinguished Academic All-American honors (3 .8+ GPA’s) . • For the fourth consecutive year the men’s baseball team earned the NJCAA academic Team-of-the-Year award for posting the nations best cumulative GPA (3 .57) . • For the fourth consecutive year a Daytona State College women’s team earned the FCCAA female academic Team-of-the-Year award with the softball team posting the states best team cumulative GPA (3 .17) .
And, our teams were equally as competitive in their respective sports seasons by virtue of some very impressive accomplishments as follows: • Women’s Golf – 2010 NJCAA National Champions • Men’s Swimming & Diving – 2010 NJCAA National Championships - Runner-Up • Women’s Swimming & Diving – 2010 NJCAA National Championships - 3rd Place • Men’s Basketball – FCCAA State Tournament participant; MFC Champions • Women’s Basketball – FCCAA State Tournament participant • Women’s Softball – FCCAA State Tournament participant
This year promises to be an exciting year for all of our sports teams . I encourage you to get out and see some exciting events and support our student-athletes in all of their endeavors while they are here with us at Daytona State College . These are exciting times for our students and they need our collective support . Join me and let’s make this year the best ever for our athletic program at Daytona State College . I look forward to seeing you at the games . Go falcons!

T he Daytona State College health, well-ness, fitness, recreation and athletics facilities are some of the best nation-
wide . The state-of-the-art facilities are one of the many reasons that our athletic programs are a force to be reckoned with . It is no lon-ger a secret that Daytona State College boasts some of the best facilities available at a state college . The L . Gale Lemerand Health, Well-ness and Community Education Center on the Daytona Beach Campus houses the gym-nasium, fitness center, aquatic center and related classrooms and academic programs . Daytona State’s playing fields and courts
are also among the best in the state college system . A 1,000 seat gymnasium provides a quality environment, and this small arena turns very loud with the help of our cheer-leaders, pep band, spirit team, and excited fans . The intercollegiate locker rooms are very comfortable yet practical as they serve the needs of the student-athletes on a daily basis . The baseball complex, one of only two fields in the Mid-Florida Conference with lights, has a permanent press box, a conces-sion stand and a section of chair back seat-ing . The softball complex which also has a lighted field has been recently updated to in-clude the planting of tropical indigenous palm trees lining the outfield fence to give the field that true Florida atmosphere . Both baseball and softball fields are laser leveled each year late in the fall to provide the best surface and drainage capability for the spring seasons, and both ball fields are maintained daily by the college Facilities Services Division . The 5,500 square foot Fitness Center is a true showpiece for the students and has just recently been updated (August 2007) with a

The Falcons Support Team is made up of dedicated professionals that all form a carefully designed safety net for the student-athlete cohort . These individuals all play critically important roles on
a daily basis in helping ensure that all the support is in place for our student-athletes to be successful in their efforts while at Daytona State College . The focus here will range from academic support, arranging charter
bus travel, providing strength and resistance training opportunities along with aquatic centerconditioning, to a whole array of other various student support functions .

brand new line of Cybex resistance training equipment including an entire new line of free weights and various benches; complete new line of plate loaded machines; and also a complete new line of Cybex VR-3 selectorized equipment . The new line includes a 19-piece Cy-bex VR-3 circuit and 3 .2 tons of free weights . Additionally, a com-prehensive cardiovascular work-out is available using the 27-piece aerobic arena that consists of stair climbers, elliptical trainers, tread-mills, recumbent and stationary bikes, rowing machines, Airdynes, and spinning bikes complete with audiovisual and DVD programs . Group exercise classes also are of-fered in cardio cross training, core strength, water aerobics and yoga .
A 25-yard-by-25-meter competitive pool and a 3,300 square-foot sup-port facility offer a complete aquatic experience . The pool is open year-round, is humidity and climate controlled, and is staffed with certified lifeguards . In 2007/08 the Whisper Oaks Villas condominiums were purchased by the Daytona State College Foundation to provide quality housing to our student-athletes . This complex is located in close proximity to the Daytona Beach Campus to allow students an off-campus housing en-vironment, but still close enough to get back and forth to campus with extreme ease . Now, all Daytona State scholarship student-athletes will be living at the same housing complex allowing for a more full and holistic experience for this cohort . As you can see, the range and quality of the facilities, playing fields and courts, along with the Whisper Oaks Villas housing complex only reinforces the total commitment Daytona State College has made to-ward intercollegiate athletics and promotes the success of the Falcon student-athletes .

CommunityFalcons in Action
Building relationships that make a differenceThe success of our community depends on the academic and social education that young people receive today . With this in mind, falcons in Action, a mentoring program, was created using volunteers to provide additional support for Daytona State College student-athletes . The program helps ensure that stu-dents receive the assistance and guidance necessary to succeed in college and in life . Over the past six years, Falcons in Action mentors have played a vital role in increas-ing student achievement and self-esteem . The benefits for students are immense and the lessons they learn from their mentors of-ten motivate them to be more productive stu-dents and citizens now and in the future . Volunteers have the opportunity to truly make a difference in a student’s life by pro-viding one-on-one attention and developing enduring relationships . Additionally, mentors meet highly skilled athletes and get to know the personal side of the students . Many men-tors attend the student’s games and lend support to their efforts . Through their partici-
pation in this program, the mentors are able to join in the student’s accomplishments on the playing court, field or course . The Falcons in Action mentors come from all walks of life but share the common goal of wanting to help students achieve success in college . Mentors are individuals such as retirees, college employees, recent college graduates and others who are able to give the gift of time . Businesses and organizations are also participating in the program . All volun-teers attend an orientation session to provide them with the information and training that will guide them in their role . Most mentors spend one hour per week with the students; however, schedules are arranged to accom-modate volunteers and to promote continuing relationships between the mentors and stu-dents .
for additional information about this program or to find out how you can begin making a difference as a mentor, contact Will Dunne at (386) 506-4486 or [email protected].

The Community Service Leadership Committee was established in Fall of 2003 with the purpose of organizing what was an existing con-cept into a formal process . The student-athlete based committee met initially to discuss ideas for possible community service projects and to set goals for the year . The 2009-10 Committee continued with this process and once goals were set, met regularly to report progress . The goal for the year was for each team to do at least one community ser-vice project and two major projects together . Members of the commit-tee, which consisted of one freshman and one sophomore from each team, were required to submit a report to the committee coordinator . They were also encouraged to take pictures and/or collect materials from the event . The reports and materials are kept in binder for refer-ence by Committee Coordinator .

The cheerleading program is structured as a student organization,
with elected officers, club meetings and participation in college and
community service activities . Falcon cheerleaders must meet academic
and other requirements in order to maintain eligibility for the club . Pro-
fessor Denise Henson serves as the club’s adviser .
In addition to performing at Falcon’s basketball games, cheerleaders perform at vari-

MiSSiON STATEMENTThe Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) provides college freshmen and sophomores with the tools necessary to be successful transfer students in an accred-ited athletic training curriculum program. Students have the opportunity to complete prerequisite courses and gain valuable hands-on clinical and field experience, be-ginning with the first semester on campus. The ATEP Internship Program provides a Student Athletic Trainer (SAT) from a 4-year athletic training program the oppor-tunity to gain valuable experience in a typi-cal job setting. The Athletic Training Intern is also challenged with many tasks that are intended to help prepare them for taking the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) Exam.
hANDS-ON ExPEriENCE/fiELD ExPEriENCEStudents in the ATEP are given the op-portunity to work directly with a variety of college level athletes, assessing and managing injuries that occur on the field of play, under the supervision of an Certi-fied Athletic Trainer (ATC). Athletic training students may be responsible for:
• Injury management during practices, home games, and away competitions as a First Responder;
• Sideline injury assessment and return-to-play decisions under the direct supervi-sion of ATCs;
• Regularly interacting with the supervising ATC, players, coaches, and other support staff;
• Other duties regarding injury prevention, training room supplies and equipment, and on-field athletic training operations.
CLiNiCAL ExPEriENCEStudents are also given opportunities to continue the on-field care given to injured athletes into the clinic. They are able to follow an athlete’s progress from time of injury during activity through sport specific rehabilitation, to clinical discharge and full return to competition. In the clinic, stu-dents may be responsible for:
• Assessing and rehabilitating athletic in-juries under the supervision of an ATC
• Performing duties in conjunction with training room/clinic operations including injury documentation and submitting in-surance claims
• Communicating with ATCs, primary care physicians, and other specialized health care professionals
• Observing orthopedic surgery
• Completing entry-level competencies in preparation for acceptance in an accred-ited four-year athletic training program .

Looking forward to the up coming 2010-2011
season, we have heavily recruited not only in the
central Florida area but also the international
arena with some athletes coming from as far
away as Sweden and Trinidad . With last year’s
recruiting efforts concentrating on distance and
mid-distance and strokes, this year’s recruiting
will be more aggressive in the sprint areas . The
year’s objectives of gaining respect among all
Florida teams, not to mention throughout NJCAA
family is high on the team’s priority list . This
objective should be accomplished by our fresh-
men men and women, swimming events like the
200 free, 500 free, 1,000 free, and the 1650
freestyle . We also feel that Daytona State’s relay
teams should be very competitive in the national
competition . The team goal is to break into the
top four at Nationals respectively and establish a
high standard of academic excellence, develop-
ing this program to become a major force in the
swimming and diving disciplines .
Coach Don Gibb with swimmer Megan Hawkins.

The Daytona State Falcons had a magical run last year, going undefeated 8-0 in the tough Mid-Florida Conference advancing to the State tournament only to have its season end in the first round . The falcons had a strong academic showing for the all conference and all State academic teams . Also they had the only two men’s basketball players at the NJ-CAA level to make academic all- American and to achieve the highest academic award in Men’s Basketball, the Hal Casey award . For their efforts the sophomores were re-warded with scholarships to various colleges and universities . The 2010-2011 Season is a rebuilding one . If a team could have two returners com-ing back it would be these two All- State play-ers in Will Neighbour, a talented 6’10” power forward from England and Marquise Glaze, a shooting guard from Montgomery, Alabama . Neighbour the leading scorer and rebounder from last season averaged 15 points and 6 rebounds . He also made doing it academi-cally making all- conference and all- state academically as well as athletically . Glaze was the second leading scorer averaging 14 .2 points and 3 .5 rebounds . A talented freshmen class will have to mature quickly to get us to the top of the con-ference again . Dietrick Payne a four time state champion from Jacksonville, Florida played at Arlington Country Day . Along Payne at the point guard position is Ja’Quan Jones from Baltimore, Maryland Heritage High School . Lawrence Battle from Orlando played at West Oaks Academy . Rounding out the freshman class at the guard position is Damarkco Fos-ter, a shooting guard, from Cincinnati, Ohio .
SeasonOutlook
Damarkco played his high school basketball at Newport High school . Kevin Burnell brings experience to the falcon back court . A transfer from Pasco Hernando, Kevin is the son of Hall of Famer Frank Burnell . He brings a strong work ethic and experience to the Falcons this year . The Power forward and center positions will be filled by a group of young talented freshmen and transfers . Will Green, a trans-fer from Western Kentucky is from Orlando . A great athlete, Willie will bring excitement to the falcons with his high flying athleticism . Nathaniel Hill, a freshman forward from Moultrie, Georgia will add quickness and re-bounding to this position . Arthur Williams another freshman from Cairo, Illinois will be playing both power for-wards and center positions . Kadeem Coleby from Nassau, Bahamas will be holding down the center position . Kadeem a transfer brings a physical presence to the Falcons front court . Corey Harvey from Hilliard, Ohio a walk- on will add depth and experience to the front court along with freshman Ossie Faison from Sanford, Florida, Marc Gustin and local prod-uct Darius Hall from Atlantic High School .

Mitsuki Katahira: Kanagawa, Japan
The Daytona State College Women’s Golf Team carries a tremendous amount of con-fidence heading into this season . The Lady Falcons are coming off the most successful season in the history of the 13 year program . Last year was filled with record breaking scores that resulted in 7 team and 7 indi-vidual victories . They finished off the year with an impressive 60 stroke victory at the NJCAA National Championship . They shat-tered program and national championship records and set the bar for future years . Re-turning sophomore, Mitsuki Katahira from Kanagawa, Japan was a standout for the Lady Falcons . She had 5 tournament victories in-cluding the NJCAA National Championship . Katahira won the NJCAA National Champi-onship by 8 shots and set a NJCAA scoring record by posting an 8-under 64 in the 2nd round of play . Other standouts included re-turning players Ericka Schneider and Amy West . West posted an impressive win at the Xavier Invitational and ended the year with a 2nd place finish at the NJCAA National Championship . Ericka Schneider also had a great year and finished with a 4th place finish at the NJCAA National Championship . Kata-hira, Schneider and West all earned 1st Team All-American honors as well . This year the Lady Falcons are focused on making this season even better than last year . They have proven this fall that they are poised to do whatever it takes to reach their goals . While competing in NCAA DI events, they have already won 3 team events and 5 individual titles . They have already dropped 5 strokes off their team scoring average and
Katahira and Schneider have both dropped their individual scoring averages by 5 and 4 strokes, respectively . Katahira’s scoring aver-age is 69 and Schneider’s is a 74 . Katahira is considered one of the elite players in the en-tire nation including all the top players from NCAA institutions . Katahira won 4 out of the 5 events we competed in individually most of-ten winning by large margins . The only event she didn’t capture individually was won by her own teammate Ericka Schneider . Both players have made tremendous improve-
SeasonOutlook
ments in their games and are off to a great start . Amy West has continued her steady play this year as well by maintaining a scor-ing average of 75 and consistently posting top finishes . Freshman, Kelly Miller from Wales, UK has stepped into the line-up as the #4 player and has made an immediate impact . She has a 77 scoring average and has been a big part of the team’s success this past fall . These players have continually proven that they can compete at the NCAA DI level and are often the favorites to win these events . Competing at this level has motivated these players to work hard and strive to reach their true potential . Other players for the Lady Falcons include sophomore Cassie Cleary from Punta Gorda, FL who earned 2nd Team All-American hon-ors with an 8th place finish as the NJCAA National Championship, sophomore Barbara Malone from West Palm Beach, FL and fresh-man Kaylee Random from Alpharetta, GA . The Lady Falcons goal this 2010-2011 season is to win as many events as possible both team and individually and to repeat as NJCAA National Champions and to also be successful in the classroom . The 2010-2011 spring season consists of 5 tournaments, the NJCAA region VIII qualifier, and the 2011 NJCAA National Championship . Our confi-dence from the successes from last year and in the fall will carry the squad into the spring season . Our impressive finishes and scores should continue as this team is loaded with talented players that are extremely confident and motivated to improve and win .

SeasonOutlook
Last season the Daytona State Softball program was named the FCCAA Female Academic Team of the Year . The Coaching staff and all of our student-athletes take both academics and athletics together seriously . This season we plan to exceed last year’s team GPA . The Falcon’s welcome alumni, Alissa Smith, to the coaching staff this season . “Coach Smith, will bring Division I experience to the staff while working with our infielders and hit-ters .” Also new this year is Volunteer Assistant Coach, Jessica Hurtado . “Coach Hurtado will be working in the bullpen with Mike Sokol, who has had great success developing our pitch-ers .” There are five starters returning from the 2010 season all of which were FCCAA All-
Academic Team members last year . The returners include last season’s top Region VIII hitter, Alex Brown (FCCAA Mid-Florida Conference Second Team) . Infielder, Courtney Sherrill (FCCAA Mid-Florida Conference First Team) and catcher/first baseman, Erin Wolfe (FCCAA Mid-Florida Conference Second Team) both return as an offensive threat . This season Marissa Blake (FCCAA Mid-Florida Conference Second Team) may be found at second base or in the outfield with returner, Celia Blome (FCCAA Mid-Florida Conference Honorable Mention) . The Falcons have several new faces on the roster this season . The talented group of in-coming freshman brings athleticism and speed to our lineup . Katie Capobianco, Courtney Fe-
liciano, and Kathryn Spack will be competing in practice to start in the middle infield . Gina Figliolia and Frankie Magliocchetti should also make an impact for the Falcons . “We have more pitching depth than we had last season which should take some pressure off of our hit-ters .” Freshman, Jackie Owen, Ashlyn Terry, and Ashley Williams will share time on the mound . Expectations for this upcoming year are high as our sophomores are ready to lead the way to improve upon last year’s record . This year’s team should return to the state tournament as a contender for the Atlantic District Championship .
