Nettles co-illustrated Brittney Hiller’s book The Little Laughing Yogini, which went on sale this past July. Nettles also put his photography skills to good use. While walking in downtown Charleston this summer BOOK CO - ILLUSTRATED BY JOHN NETTLES JOHN NETTLES AND FAMILY PHOTOS BY JOHN NETTLES in the wake of the Emanuel AME tragedy, Nettles and his family encountered a woman holding a “Free Hugs” sign. Nettles’s son, Parker, ran up the woman to give her a hug, and Nettles captured the moment with his camera. Sydney Whalen a junior psychology major and art minor won the Denim Day 2015 art competition sponsored by GUESS Inc in a partnership with Peace Over Violence Whalen got to fly to Los Angeles to meet GUESS co-founder Paul Marciano who named Whalenrsquos jeans the competitionrsquos winner Models also wore Whalenrsquos jeans during Mexico Cityrsquos fashion week

SCREENPRINTING FUN

Yoursquove probably seen him around CSU either at the 2015 Spring Symposium or outside creating live art But now word about Christopher (CJ) Johnson is starting to spread beyond CSUrsquos campus

CJrsquos work has been featured in a variety of exhibits including the Black Expo the Black Like Me Art Show and the if ART Gallery He has also performed at the Columbia Family Festival Taste of Upstate Oasis Music Festival Souls lsquoN Substance and has been interviewed by The Charleston Chronicle Razor TV and local radio stations This summer he put on a couple of spontaneous events including one at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church to create a commemorative live art painting in honor of the victims of the tragedy this summer

CJ recently collaborated with the Charleston Community Impact Center and Future Leaders of the World and has started teaching art to children He also started his own clothing line on Society 6 You can check out CJrsquos art at kolpeacecom

HOT-LANTA INTERNSHIP This summer Graphic Design senior Jorelle Ready interned in Atlanta GA at EM2 the Graphic Design firm that creates CSUrsquos enrollment marketing materials Ready worked with lead designers to create enrollment pamphlets retouch photos design logos and contribute to large design projects He also designed the logo for TreeHowse a sub-brand of EM2

WHERE DID OUR NEWSLETTER NAME ORIGINATE The CSU campus is built on a former Indigo Plantation The indigo plant produces a deep blue dye that ties in with the schoolrsquos navy logo Indigo represents peace spirituality and wisdom

Ryan Ball Ryan Ball is a Graphic Design senior who interned at Knight Printing and Graphics in North Charleston SC last semester He also owns and operates a freelance graphic design business called Aphekting Design Company and has designed benefit campaigns for MUSC CSU and the Five After Five Summer Festival

Zach Cline This summer Graphic Design student Zach Cline worked at the Soldierrsquos Support Institute in Fort Jackson SC under Logistic Systems Inc where he did Instructional Design Cline helped staff build an army app and worked with coding Photoshop and Lectoria a program that lets you design lesson plans and tests for online instruction

Cara Connell Cara Connell assisted in the CSU Mac Lab this year by managing the lab updating computer systems and handling a variety of print jobs for the Graphic Design department

Anthony Douangboupha This summer Anthony Douangboupha worked at Cal-Pay Services Inc an outsource payroll company in Fresno CA Douangboupha helped design and maintain the companyrsquos website and created the companyrsquos bi-weekly newsletters

Emily Lyons This summer Graphic Design student Emily Lyons worked for Graffiti Ministries in Coney Island NY a group whose mission is to show community members love through Kindness Outreach As part of this outreach students went out into the community and performed random acts of kindness such as walking into random businesses and asking for permission to wash their windows or clean their bathrooms Lyons also offered her skills as a designer to Graffiti by helping them with videography photography and by helping them create a logo

Anissa Mollett Graphic Design student Anissa Mollett did some freelance work this summer She designed a logo banners and marketing collateral for a local afterschool program She also designed flyers last year for the Open Mic Nights hosted by the Communications Association and t-shirts for the Powder Puff team

Josh Montgomery Graphic Design student Joshua Montgomer y photographed his first wedding this September and followed it up with another in October

Emily Lyons This summer Graphic Design student Emily Lyons worked for Graffiti Ministries in Coney Island NY a group whose mission is to show community members love through Kindness Outreach As part of this outreach students went out into the community and performed random acts of kindness such as walking into random businesses and asking for permission to wash their windows or clean their bathrooms Lyons also offered her skills as a designer to Graffiti by helping them with videography photography and by helping them create a logo

Anissa Mollett Graphic Design student Anissa Mollett did some freelance work this summer She designed a logo banners and marketing collateral for a local afterschool program She also designed flyers last year for the Open Mic Nights hosted by the Communications Association and t-shirts for the Powder Puff team

Josh Montgomery Graphic Design student Joshua Montgomer y photographed his first wedding this September and followed it up with another in October

HOT-LANTA INTERNSHIP This summer Graphic Design senior Jorelle Ready interned in Atlanta GA at EM2 the Graphic Design firm that creates CSUrsquos enrollment marketing materials Ready worked with lead designers to create enrollment pamphlets retouch photos design logos and contribute to large design projects He also designed the logo for TreeHowse a sub-brand of EM2

WHERE DID OUR NEWSLETTER NAME ORIGINATE The CSU campus is built on a former Indigo Plantation The indigo plant produces a deep blue dye that ties in with the schoolrsquos navy logo Indigo represents peace spirituality and wisdom

Cara Connell Cara Connell assisted in the CSU Mac Lab this year by managing the lab updating computer systems and handling a variety of print jobs for the Graphic Design department

Anthony Douangboupha This summer Anthony Douangboupha worked at Cal-Pay Services Inc an outsource payroll company in Fresno CA Douangboupha helped design and maintain the companyrsquos website and created the companyrsquos bi-weekly newsletters
