So…Ummm…What’s CSI Again?

A Message From Our President – Celeste Naik

What is Chi Sigma Phi? Chi Sigma Phi is the Fresno State chapter of Chi Sigma Iota Counseling Honor Society. The mission of Chi Sigma Iota, the international honor society for professional counselors, counselor educators, and students is to promote scholarship, research, professionalism, leadership and excellence in counseling, and to recognize high attainment in the pursuit of academic and clinical excellence in the profession of counseling.

How do I join? 1.) Students must have completed at least one semester of full-time graduate coursework in a counselor education degree program (9 graduate units), 2.) Have earned a grade point average of 3.5 or better. If you have met these qualifications, log on to the ΧΣΙ Website at http://www.csi-net.org/ to apply online. You must pay the $50.00 membership fee in order for your application to be processed for national dues for one year. (Local chapter dues will be requested per membership).

Do I have to be a member in order to participate in the member meetings? No! We strongly encourage anyone from ALL counseling options (MFT, Higher Ed, Rehabilitation, K-12) interested to participate in our member meetings. This will give you a chance to check us out and see what we are all about!

Contact any of the officers if you have any questions (officer info on page 6), or are interested in contributing to future newsletters, have ideas for fundraising/workshops, socials, activities, etc. We look forward to hearing from you!

I would like members to take away a sense of connectedness from reading

this newsletter. I hope they see that we are part of something that is bigger

than each of us individually; we are part of an expanding and formidable

profession. Our chapter and our program will only grow stronger the more

connected we are as counselors.

Counselor Wellness By: Dr. John Newport Overview: It is impossible to serve as a role model for wellness in recovery if you are not taking care of yourself. Unfortunately, many if not most addiction professionals short-change themselves in this important area. Many still cling to their nicotine addiction (cigarette smoking is the leading cause of death for people in recovery) and/or succumb to other "substitute addictions" including over-eating and addiction to sugar and caffeine. Many counselors also harbor heavy co-dependency tendencies and have a difficult time in reconciling the stresses of working in our field with a well-balanced, health-conducive lifestyle.

In recognition of the need among counselors and other addiction professionals for guidance in taking better care of themselves, Dr. Newport has developed a variety of service offerings addressing counselor wellness. These include:

• Workshop/Intensive Training:

• Personalized Wellness Counseling:

• Action Planning for Wellness Packet:

Celeste M. NaikCeleste M. Naik Age: 28 (29 this month!)

Born: Portsmouth, VA (Naval Base)

Raised: Sanger, CA

Status: Married with children

CSI Role: President (2nd year) “Really, I was just in the right place at the right time. I was just really lucky and I kinda just fell into this.”

Studying: Masters Counseling- Marriage, Family, & Child Counseling (Began Fall 2010, Graduates this semester!)

Why: Wanted to become a license therapist. “To get the education, the knowledge, experience that I would need to help women like me, and help their children.”

Self Purpose & Master’s Project: Wellness Counseling for Student Mothers. “I found through my experience that there was a real need for support on campus for student moms and student parents in general.”

Long-Term Professional Goal: Non-Profit Organization in Fresno, CA. “To assist student mothers in obtaining a four-year degree.”

Particular Interest Population: Single parent student mothers but is fully aware of mothers in need that may not be single. Is willing to provide support for this population as well. Also “My heart is really with women who come from low income backgrounds because that is where I came from.”

Other Professional Goal Aspirations: To work with Muslim population in the Central Valley. “To develop counseling techniques and theory to work with the Muslim population here in the Central Valley. My husband is Muslim and it’s had a huge affect on my life. It completely has changed my perspective about who I am and who other people are and the way that I see the world. I would like to maybe be one of the people to start bridging the gap between the need and sensitivity of that population and mental health counseling.”

*Chosen as a Chi Sigma Iota Leadership Fellow. She is 1 of 2 Masters students chosen for this position. This is a national recognition which is mainly reserved for Doctoral students. Only 10 students were selected (8 in Doctoral Program, 2 in Masters program – Celeste is one of the 2). She will be attending two American Counseling Association conferences while gaining a wealth of knowledge from her experience.

Advice: “Realize how important CSI is to this program. We are not an elitist group….We are really just here to serve. Leadership is about serving others.”
