Rotary Club of Singapore pledges donation of beds to JAMIYAH Singapore

By CSC Director Rtn Irina Francken

President Perlita, Director of CSC Rtn Irina and newly inducted Rtn Daniel Beyeler visited Jamiyah Nursing Home at West Coast Drive on the 17th of December. They met with Jamiyah Singapore Vice-President Dr HM Saleem and number of senior staff to discuss the proposed donation of second hand high tech beds that Rtn Daniel had obtained from a Swiss hospital. They went around the facilities of the Nursing Home (residential and training) and were treated to some impromptu singing by the patients.

The Rotarians were provided with an overall background of umbrella organisation JAMIYAH Singapore which was established in 1932. Its mission and vision are to serve the community and to provide service to the needy and disadvantaged sections of society, regardless of race and faith. The group has 4 Welfare Homes (including Jamiyah Nursing home and Jamiyah Home for the Aged), 7 Education Centres and also various Welfare Services.

While we visited the Nursing Home which provides step-down care for patients requiring long-term nursing care, the pledge for the beds has been made for Jamiyah Home for the Aged whose residents are slightly more independent than those in the Nursing Home. The 150 hospital beds will be donated by one of the hospitals in Baselland, Switzerland. Rtn Daniel Beyeler will manage this project and his company BMS Business Management and Services Pte Ltd will sponsor the shipping costs. Rtn Adnan Ansari will seek

sponsorship for logistics which will include port storage prior to delivery to the Home. Members of CSC propose to visit the Jamiyah Home for the Aged in mid-February when hospital beds are expected to arrive a month after shipment. “The visit to the Jamiyah Nursing Home showed us the sense of care and passion which create the sense of solitude…the delicate attention to the patients,” Rtn Irina mentioned after leaving the Nursing Home.

Last Week

INDUCTION OF NEW MEMBER

President Perlita had the pleasant duty of inducting a new member, Rtn Daniel Beyeler to the Club. Rtn Daniel was introduced to the Club by his proposer, Director Dr Irina Francken. Rtn Daniel is the CEO/Owner of BMS Business Management & Services Pte Ltd. His classification is “Business Management – Crisis and Risk”. Rtn Daniel was recommended by President Perlita to join the Community and International Service Committees for the Rotary year. Rtn Daniel’s personal particulars will be circulated to members separately.

Upon his induction, President Perlita invited Rtn Daniel to give a briefing on the Ebola response in Liberia, which he visited. He gave a brief general history of Ebola and added that the Ebola situation was real with the state of emergency imposed in Liberia. Rtn Daniel gave some insights to the Ebola situation and cited the major challenges ahead to combat the disease. Rtn Daniel advised that he was invited to attend the Rotary Club of Monrovia’s meeting and presented President Perlita with the club’s

banner. Due to time constraints, members agreed to have Rtn Daniel address the Club again on the Ebola situation at a later date. President advised that before becoming member, Rtn Daniel had sponsored the shipment of 240 hospital beds which would be distributed to Homes for the aged. HEARTIEST CONGRATULATIONS!

President Perlita was pleased to announce and extend heartiest congratulations to PP Tapan & Prabha Rao on the marriage of their eldest daughter, Tanvi to Mr Ashley Christudason on 15th December. Rev Dr Gordon Wong (centre) with PDG Ivor & Pres Perlita

President Perlita called upon PP Raymon Huang to introduce the Guest Speaker, Rev Dr Gordon Wong. PP Raymon advised that he has known Rev Gordon since he was a teenager, as their families are close friends. He added that Rev Gordon has been a Methodist Pastor for the last 28 years and has a BA (Hons) Degree from the London School of Theology and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. Rev Gordon has many books on Christianity to his credit. Prior to his appointment as TRAC President, Rev Gordon lectured extensively on the Old Testament and biblical Hebrew at the Trinity Theological College in Singapore. His Presidential appointment term would run from 2013 to 2016. Lastly, PP Raymon advised that Rev Gordon was an avid and terrific golfer – his T-shots being usually 100 metres further than his, and, PP Raymon added he hit a fair T-shot! In his talk, Rev Gordon noted that Christmas meant different things to different people, and might even mean different things to the same people as circumstances in life changes. Firstly, Rev Gordon advised that the Bible invited us to celebrate Christmas because of the birth of the child named Jesus was a promise of salvation from sin. Rev Gordon explained why the Bible presented the promise of salvation from sins as actually very good news, and something which we should all be happy to hear, particularly when we live in a world plagued by the problem of sin. He added that the Child of Christmas was not only called Jesus which meant Salvation, but was also called by the name Immanuel which was Hebrew for “God with us”. Rev Gordon added that the child born at Christmas reminded us that there is a God who promised to be with us, that Christmas assured us that we were not alone in our sufferings. In closing, Rev Gordon sang a Christmas song, popularised by Johnny Mathis “When a Child is Born”, with its meaningful lyrics. Rev

Gordon added that in the meantime, whilst suffering and evil continued to afflict us, we celebrate because we do not suffer alone. Jesus – Immanuel – God is with us. He hoped that the good news of Christmas would inspire and comfort all who live in a world that needed salvation from the destructive power of sin and suffering. PDG Dr Ivor Thevathasan extended the Club’s vote of thanks to Rev Gordon and added that his message was a pertinent and appropriate one at a time when one opened the newspapers to see it full of sins, when it should be a time of healing and peace. PDG Ivor noted that Rotary was involved in the start of the United Nations and it was a basic belief and wish for the future generations to have peace and harmony.

The Guide to Daily Living

Before doing the things we want to do, consider first, the precepts

of the guide. Ask ourselves these 4 questions and act upon them:

First: Have I spent some time in self-examination?

Second: Have I spent quality time with my family?

Third: Have I given my best to my work?

Fourth: Have I given some time to someone near and far?

The Guide, in fact, encompasses the 4 parts of the Object of Rotary.

The Four-Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do:

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill and better friendship?

Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
