Principal Report Lots of great things happening at school. The Junior School Council (JSC) met for the first time recently and are starting to organise some activities and fundraisers. There will be a few Easter events listed on one of the pages in this newsletter.

After many training sessions around the school, some students have been selected for the Cross Country being held at Russell Square this Friday. Mr Mooney will be taking them on the bus and we wish them all the best for the day.

Thank-you to the fundraising committee and Virginia M for once again helping out at a school fundraiser. This time we ran a BBQ at a clearance auction and made over $800 for the day. We do appreciate the hard work in getting these events organised and for the people who donate their time, especially over the weekends. We have had lots of fundraisers this term and the school has benefitted greatly from all the efforts, with lots of money being raised. Well done everyone!

Marcus Murrell returns on Monday April 1st. This will be my last opportunity through the newsletter to thank the staff, students and community of Creswick North PS for making my time here a wonderful experience. It’s great to be involved with such a supportive school community. I wish the school all the best and hope to visit again sometime in the future.

M.A.R.C. Van History lessons are in full swing with the M.A.R.C. Van back in schools once a fortnight. It’s been lovely to welcome Ms Norton this year who will be taking some of the lessons in different schools. Our theme this term is Indigenous Studies and we have been learning about symbols used by Aboriginal people to help tell their Dream Time stories. We are learning to acknowledge the traditional owners of our land at special ceremonies and have watched several video clips of Aboriginal people talking about their culture. We have learnt that HANDS are a SYMBOL of BELONGING in Aboriginal culture.

Junior School Council News Coming up: Easter Raffle - Students to each bring an egg. Raffle tickets sent

home. Raffle drawn on last day of term. Easter Egg Hunt - JSC to hide eggs and all children to find them.

This will be on the last day of term. Easter Colouring Competition - A prize is given to the winner in

each grade. Date to be decided. Sell Zooper Doopers - Beginning on Monday 18th March in the Art

room, each day for two weeks 1.00 - 1.15pm each day. Cost will be 50¢. Other ideas for next term: • Spelling Bee • Disco (next term) Our members also discussed a charity that our school could raise funds for next term.

Year F/1 Classroom This week we are reading, as our whole class focus, the Big Book, How Boring. Each week we study a different Big Book for the week. It is amazing how much the children progress by reviewing the book throughout the week, and each day, focusing on a different aspect of the text. We continue to work on our letters and sounds. It is very important that children focus on the initial sound, and in particular as beginning readers, use the initial sound to help

identify words. When hearing home reading it is effective for parents to always use the phrases ‘Check the picture’ and ‘Get your mouth ready’ for beginning readers. We have set up a ‘Sound Table ’in our room. A ‘Sound Box’ will be sent home and I ask that parents find some things for their child to bring to school beginning with that letter. Children will take turns to bring the box to school each week. We are also working on the theme of Jack and the Beanstalk this term.

Year 2/3 Classroom

Another very busy fortnight in Year 2/3. We had a Big Write last week and a Cold Write this week. This completes our unit on narratives and we now move to persuasive writing. In numeracy we have begun work on 2D and 3D shapes, whilst continuing to work on addition and problem solving. Our All About Me unit is nearing completion with lots of work on display in our classroom. Please feel free to come in and have a look. We are now moving onto the human body and its systems, such as skeleton, major organs and muscles and nutrition to fuel the body. Students have been doing daily huff & puff completing laps of the 500 metre cross country track. There has been a stomach bug going around schools so if your child is not feeling well, please keep them home so as not to spread the illness.

Good luck to our cross country squad tomorrow !

Have a great fortnight!

Year 4/5/6 Classroom Last Friday was the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. We had some great discussions around what bullying actually is and the detrimental effects it can have on people. We decorated a buntings flag for our classroom and the students came up with some great slogans relating to anti bullying. Cross Country is being held tomorrow at Russell Square. We wish Nathan, Jackson and Lachlan all the best for their event and well done for qualifying to attend! In Mathematics we have started to learn all about fractions. This can often be a daunting subject so any help at home in terms of real life experiences involving fractions would be a great way to support your child. We have begun to practise the art of writing persuasive texts. Students are enjoying debating given topics and sharing their opinions. NAPLAN this year will involve Year 5s completing their writing component on the computer. There are many websites such as https://sense-lang.org/typing/ that offer free typing practise that will help to increase your child’s typing speed. Today we welcome Cato to our classroom. Cato is in Year 5 and we look forward to getting to know him and showing him all the wonderful things we do at Creswick North.

Congratulations to Emmy, Amelia, Zali, Lachlan and Nathan for reaching at least 25 nights of Home Reading and receiving a certificate at assembly! Keep up the great work.

Regards Katrina Baulch and Virginia McLennan

School Council What a huge start to the year! Our fundraising is off to a flying start – The Tastepoint Fundraiser was a success - we earned $1000 for filling 60 spots for tasting. The Golf Day was another success thanks to Beth for her time and effort a great day was had by all. The Trivia Night was well attended and finally last weekend’s BBQ. Heartfelt thanks to all involved in attending and helping at all events. Next week we farewell Mr R, and on behalf of School Council I would like to thank him for his hard work in a very busy first term. We will be having a test run of the new oven on Wednesday when we make cupcakes and muffins, also a sausage sizzle for lunch – parents are most welcome to come help out with cooking in the morning or enjoy a sausage for lunch. We welcome new and returning faces to School Council this year – Miranda Chalmers as President, Nathan Hampson as Vice President along with Rose Budd, Beth Civelle, Bel Ellams, Madeline Fernbach, Melissa Spenceley and our DET representative Virgina McLennan. Once again our thanks to outgoing members Matthew Butterworth, Nathan Thorpe and Lesley Vanderpol. Our school requires input to run and we appreciate the time you all volunteer. Naplan Practice Test

This year the Naplan testing for years 3 and 5 students will be all done online (except for yr.3 Writing). They will all be having a

practice test on the morning of Thursday, March 28th. None of the results will be recorded—it is purely to test our systems and

devices here at school in readiness for the Naplan tests in May.

If you would like your child to have some practice tests at home (or even have a go yourself!), visit this website to practise the Yr. 3 and 5 online tests in Reading, Numeracy, Language Conventions

and Writing (Yr.5 only): https://nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site
