Acting Principal’s Report Five weeks until the end of term seems very hard to believe. The weather is keeping us on our toes as we go from hot two days ago to pouring with rain today. I, along with many others, attended the Remembrance Day Service in Creswick last weekend. Our students did Creswick North Primary School proud as they read their poems and presented a wreath on behalf of the school. Thank you to Regan Budd and Kiera Mold for reading A Poem for Remembrance Day. They both put a lot of practice into their parts and the end result was a smooth and moving tribute. Regan Budd and Zac Frank were responsible for laying the wreath at the Cenotaph and they did this very respectfully. There were other schools involved in this service and all students did well, however I was particularly proud of our students. Thanks to the families who attended and who supported their children to be part of the service.

Our students demonstrated their existing knowledge and great understanding of what to do in a fire during sessions for each class, delivered by Fireman Phil and Ernie on Friday, November 3rd. The safety messages were welcome as we approach a hot summer

and an upcoming bushfire season. We followed this day up with a fire drill evacuation practice the following week and the students were very impressive as they calmly moved out to the oval and awaited further instructions. Well done all. We had a variety of visitors last week with Tony Collier coming in to work with Year 5/6 students on Tuesday, November 7th to develop their skills in golf. People from Ecolink visited on Thursday, November 9th and did some great activities about native frogs with the two younger classes. The Year 5/6 students learned how to make paper. A great time was had by all. Our other visitor was a little unexpected. Some of our students were surprised by the arrival of a snake during our lunch time on Thursday last week. We quickly evacuated the area and called the snake catcher, however the snake quickly decided a school was not a relaxing place to be and slithered off.

Acting Principal’s Report We have booked a site inspection with a snake catcher, to assist us with identifying any areas attractive to snakes and he will also chat to the students about safe behaviours around snakes. This is scheduled for Monday, 4th December. Again our students showed great common sense – quickly alerting teachers and safely moving to a classroom without any panic. This week the Year 5/6 students and I walked down to the Creswick Hub to start our sessions about Leadership. Our Year 6 students and current leaders, are fulfilling the role of Mentor to the Year 5 students who will be stepping into Leadership roles in 2018. The session was led by the new Creswick Hub Team Leader, Danielle Tunnicliffe, who began with a picture book story. Initially, students felt they were too old for a picture book, however we discussed that, as older students and even adults, we often notice and learn different things when we look at picture books. After having a discussion about what it means to be a leader and what it might look like at school, the students had the opportunity to create badges to show their special talent or interest area. We clearly have some very creative students because these badges turned out very well. We will continue the leadership learning at school over the next three weeks prior to students creating their presentations for the school community for the other students to vote on in order to determine who are to be the school leaders in 2018. I attended a Regional Principals Forum at Federation University on Monday of this week. We learned more about the Region’s Literacy priority for 2018 and some of the resources that have been set up to support teachers build their teaching capacity. The Department of Education are rolling out a new, online Strategic Planning tool and we spent some of our day learning how to complete this in a time efficient manner. All Annual Implementation Plans are now required into the Department before December 31st this year. This is a new timeline as previously, these plans were submitted by March in the New Year. Tomorrow night, students and staff are looking forward to our Junior School Disco. I’m sure this will be an enjoyable night. I hope everyone had an enjoyable long weekend last weekend and have returned refreshed for the second half of our term. Sue Izard Acting Principal

Year Foundation/1

Students have been engaged in maths, enjoying surveying their peers,

exploring different ways to display their data and looking at what infor-

mation their graphs tell them. We will begin to look at money next. As

part of literacy we have been learning to write letters and will send our

final drafts to Santa later this week!

It has been a busy two weeks in the Foundation/Year 1 classroom. We have had Fireman Phil and Fireman Ernie come to visit. In addition we have also had a very informative session with Sophie from Ecolinc on frogs. The students enjoyed both of these sessions and learnt a lot.

Year 2/3/4 We hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend last weekend and made the most of the beautiful weather. Sophie from Ecolinc came to visit us last Thursday to teach the children about frogs. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the session and had lots of contributions to make to the discussions.

We all learnt lots of things about frogs that we didn't know before such as... "Some frogs have teeth" (Emmy) "There are sticky things on the end of a frog's tongue that make the insects get stuck" (Zali) "Some frogs eat each other" (Nathan) "Frogs can jump a long way because they have strong back legs" (Kaden) "Frogs breathe through their skin when they are under water" (Charlie) "Frogs can actually dig" (Ella Jo) "Some frogs can camouflage and some even change colours!" (Kaley) "Frogs have very thin skin so they can breathe through it" (Lachlan) "There are many different noises that frogs make and the males make the most noise" (Nate) "There are over 4000 species of frog in the world" (Reed) "Frogs jump from one place to another" (Mackenzie) "Some frogs can only hear their own species calls" (Jackson) "Some frogs are poisonous" (Amelia) In Mathematics, students have been learning about volume and capacity. They have been busily squeezing and measuring orange juice and estimating how much liquid containers will hold. Any opportunities to help out with cooking at home where children get the opportunity to measure would be valuable in consolidating their learning. Onomatopoeia has been a popular word in our classroom over the last fortnight! Your children would love to share their knowledge of these words with you.

Year 5/6

Last week, our students participated in an Ecolinc incursion. We learnt all about paper making and had the opportunity to make our own using shredded paper, water and a frame. Students have been working on writing their own autobiographies and how to write consistently using past tense. They have been watching The Diary of Anne Frank as an example of an autobiography from a young, similarly aged girl. Students are looking forward to heading off to camp in a couple of weeks time. It will be here before we know it.

Christmas in Creswick

Creswick is being decorated this year. Councillor Greg May will cut the ribbon at the band stand to open our town for the Christmas festivals. There will be a Christmas tree outside the R.S.L. Hall. And on the 15th,22nd & 23rd of December Santa will be in the R.S.L. Hall from 4-7pm for you to take photos. There will be a box outside the chemist and a box outside the newsagents for the people of Creswick to vote for the best window display. The children of our 3 Primary Schools & Newlyn Primary will be displaying their Christmas decorations they have been making for the shops. So come on down to the Bandstand on the 1st of December at 8pm and enjoy our Creswick Christmas cheer.
