Did you have a great time at Corbell Kickoff? My family and I sure did! From the food trucks to the free snow cones to the bounce houses and games, I think there was definitely something for everyone. What a great way to kick off a wonderful year at Corbell. Your PTA works very hard in providing fun days like this, and on October 1st, our children will participate in our one and only fundraiser, the 8th annual Wild Walk. We have a festive, high-energy extravaganza planned, and we welcome family members to join the fun!

Of course, exercise and camaraderie aren't the only rea-sons we hold the Wild Walk each year. Naturally, your PTA is also trying to raise money - lots of it! In addition to the plethora of programs and resources the PTA provides using Wild Walk donations, we have new goals for 2013-2014. We want to purchase 30 more iPad minis with cases, some literacy kits, guided reading books, and some fun fence cups that spell ‘CORBELL’ on our playground fence. We also will be awarding mini grants to teachers. They will be required to submit an entry form explaining what they would like, how it will benefit their students, the cost, and where to purchase. We will have a committee go through these submissions, and based on the amount of money that we raise, we will award the mini grants. So tru-ly, ANY donation is valuable! Don't forget about corporate matching program as well.

I want to thank every parent who took 2 minutes to input their family's contact infor-mation into the student directory portion on the student registration site. We have compiled all of that information and have almost completed the directory. Look for them in your child's backpack very soon. Remember that only PTA members re-ceive a student directory, so if you haven't joined the PTA, print the Corbell PTA Membership Form , fill it out, and have your child return it to their teacher.

We have already had two email blasts sent out to help remind you of the upcoming events for the next couple of weeks. If you aren't receiving those reminders and would like to, please click here and send your name and email address to be added to the list. Thanks so much for your support!

Donate Your iDevice to SAGE

Apple has recently revealed its

iPhone 5c. What does this have to

do with SAGE at Corbell? Our

Frisco ISD schools have a great need

for iDevices to use with our students

receiving special education services!

We encourage anyone that is

upgrading their iDevice to consider

donating their used one (with

charger) to the district’s special

education department. FISD can take any generation of

the iPhone except the very first one. They also accept

donations of iPods or iPads, as well as used cases. Device

donations are tax deductible and will go directly into the

hands of a child learning to communicate!

Please contact Elizabeth Peichel, SAGE Chairman, at

[email protected] for more information about this

program, and how you can make a big difference in the

lives of these special kids.

Keep your head in the game

At the Counselor’s Corner with Mrs. Ramsey

Dear Parents:

It is a policy of the Frisco Independent School District that all fifth grade students take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). This is a standardized test that measures students’ learned reasoning abilities. The test is divided into three areas: verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal problems. The verbal set of tests assesses the students’ abilities to search, retrieve, and compare processes that are essential for verbal reasoning. The quantitative tests assess the students’ abilities to reason about patterns and relations using various concepts. The non-verbal tests assess the students’ abilities to reason using spatial and figural content.

The test will be administered to all fifth grade students on the mornings of October 9, 10, and 11. Each testing period will last approximately one hour. Parents are encouraged to not schedule any doctor/dental appointments for these days.

This test is very important, and it is important that all students be in attendance on test days. There are several things that you can do to help your child be successful on this test.

Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep the night before the test.

Make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast the morning of the test.

Have your child arrive at school on time that morning so he/she does not feel rushed.

Do not schedule any appointments for your child on the mornings of testing.

Finally, send your child to school that day with a hug and words of encouragement.

Results from the testing will be provided to the parents once we receive them back from Riv-erside Publishing. With home and school working together in your child’s education, we can make a difference.

Very truly yours,

Kristen Ramsey, counselor/testing coordinator
