For more than fifty years, the East Alabama United Cerebral Palsy Center has subsisted mostly on funds raised from its annual Telethon, held each year during the first weekend in August. The Center relies on donations from local businesses and community individuals just to keep its doors open to individuals with a variety of physical and developmen-tal disabilities. One of the many organizations to lend support in recent years is the Anniston Runners Club, giving an annual donation from the Wood-stock 5K race, the club’s signature event that coincides with the Tele-thon. Thanks in large part to the national recognition the Woodstock 5K has received in the last few years, the number of participating run-ners has grown tenfold, which has meant an increase in the number of children the Anniston Runners Club has been able to sponsor through the Telethon. This year is no different; the Woodstock 5K was selected to be the 2009 RRCA National 5K Championship, which translates into an expected race field that could reach over 1,000 for both the 5K and 1 Mile events. Anniston Runners Club will once again lend it support to the Telethon, but this year it is reaching out to athletes of a different caliber through the local Special Olympics. “As a club made up of people who are so focused on our health and exercise, we felt it was important to support a group that is determined to keep the doors of physical fitness open to everyone, regardless of a cognitive disability,” says Matt Camp, Anniston Runners Club vice-president. The local chapter of the Special Olympics is coordinated through the Association of Retarded Citizens of Calhoun County and offers participants the option to compete in track and field, bocce, swimming, basketball, and roller skating. Any individual over the age of eight with a form of mental retardation or cognitive disability is provided training opportunities and encouragement from the volunteer coaches. Often participation is made possible through all seven of the area school sys-tems, although several homeschoolers participate as well. The physical well-being doesn’t end at graduation, though, as the Anniston Parks and Recreation Department coordinates an adult Spe-cial Olympics program. “Each year we send local athletes from both programs to state games and area competitions. I was fortunate enough to have coached two Calhoun County roller skaters in the SO World Games in Ireland.

woodstock & kidstock benefits more than ParticipantsBy Mercy Pilkington

So we are a pretty active group,” comments local coordinator Pati Tiller. The organization had 163 area athletes compete in the track and field competition alone. The largest grassroots fundraising opportunity supporting the Special Olympics nationally is the Law Enforcement Torch Run, in which police of-ficers run together to relay a lit torch carrying the Flame of Hope to its destina-tion at the SO World Games. This year, policemen and sheriff ’s deputies from Decatur, Shelby County, Homewood, and Anniston will run as a group with the Torch at the Woodstock 5K, escorted by motorcycle units. Steve Dotson, Anniston policeman and Anniston Runners Club member, will run with this group of dedicated officers. “The mission of the Torch Run is to raise funds for and awareness of the Special Olympics movement. In May of this year the run began with events in Decatur, Pelham, and Montgomery, then ended in Troy where the Alabama State games were held,” said Dotson. “There were city police, sheriff ’s deputies, state troopers, ABC agents, probation officers, and FBI agents who ran in the event. It is an honor for me to participate and a very rewarding experience.”

One of the greatest joys of childhood is the freedom of running across a field or playground, laughing hysterically at the closest feeling to flying many of us will ever get. Fortunately, for some runners that feeling never fades, it just slows down a little bit. The Anniston Runners Club has dedicated itself to developing life-long runners in the community, starting with childhood. Since 2007, the Youth Running division of the Club has been promoting running to area children through organized training runs, races, fun get-togethers, and more. The goal of this free program has been to keep kids running into adulthood and to promote healthy active lifestyles in children and families, while purposely not imposing strenuous training events, practice schedules, and expensive uniforms or equipment on families who are often already stretched to their limits. The focus is on fun. “Running is something I do to battle stress,” remarks club member Wendy Turner, mother of Wren, 8, and Chad, 6, “and I want that same healthy habit for my kids. We joined the Youth Running program to give them an opportunity to get out and run without having to have

one more thing on our family’s schedule.” And it has paid off; the entire Turner family can often be found toeing the starting line at many local races, with both sons already competing at the 5K distance. Paired up with the Anniston Runners Club’s key race, the Woodstock 5K, the Youth Running division will host the Kidstock 1 Mile Run/Walk. The Kidstock race swelled to almost 100 par-ticipants last year and hopes to see an even bigger attendance this year. Youth Running Directors April Brass and Carrie Higgins have put a lot of strategic energy into preparing for a race of this size, considering that the Kidstock race is slated to have more partici-pants than many full-scale 5K races in this area. Training runs have been arranged at different locations around town to allow the largest number of young runners to attend, as well as a youth run-ning training camp for kids aged 14 and under. While mom and dad race the Woodstock 5K, kids who are awaiting their turn at the start can remain safely guarded in the Kids’ Corral’s moon bounce, water slide, and snow cone stations. Despite the heavy preparations from its leaders, the focus of

both the training events and the entire Youth Running division still remains a desire to keep running fun for the kids. Kidstock will be an opportunity for the next generation of runners to strut their stuff.

Local residents have reported numerous sightings of a very strange crea-ture lurking through the streets of the surrounding area. It has 1260 legs, is often dripping with sweat, and usually breathes fairly heavily. Fortunately, it’s not at all scary. This creature is the entire Anniston Runners Club, boasting 630 members (hence all those legs!). Almost 30 years ago, the club was made up of a handful of people who just enjoyed getting together for some exercise. Today, that same club has shifted its focus to promoting running throughout the southeast region, while making running available to athletes of all ability levels. There are now divisions of the club dedicated to promoting children’s running, women’s running, ultra-running, and triathletes, and plans are un-derway for a forthcoming division for those who prefer to walk for exercise. The majority of the members are runners who exercise for fitness and fun, but many of the club’s members are state record holders, from three-time 5K state record holder Jake Moore, the youngest 5K record holder in the state, to three-time 5K record holder Claudis Hawkins, who is the oldest. Ken Brewer, aged 67, set the marathon state record for his age back in December, giving him nine state records. Of course, the women aren’t to be outdone: Yo Setser holds eleven state records for various distances. The club hosts several large-scale races each year, including the forma-tion of the current Grand Prix series, but its signature event is the Wood-

stock 5K, which has been held annually in Anniston for 29 years. A mere four years ago, 79 runners participated in this event; for the 2009 hosting, which has been named the RRCA National 5K Cham-pionship, 1,000 runners are expected for both the Woodstock 5K and Kidstock 1 Mile Run/Walk. The event has earned unprecedented accolades. Three times in as many years the Road Runners Club of America, the governing body over individual chapters of running clubs throughout the country, has named the Woodstock 5K to be a championship race, first the state championship in 2007, the regional championship in 2008, and the national championship in 2009. Even more impressive, in 2008 the Woodstock 5K was awarded the RRCA’s top honor: Road Race of the Year. Each year, the club has found new ways to add to the event and make it even better, mostly through the hard work of over 250 volun-teers and race director Brooke Nelson. “As a race director, nothing is more rewarding than for run-ners to tell me they had fun at Woodstock. Fulfilling their expecta-tions makes all the work over the last year worth it,” said Nelson in her fourth year as Race Director. “All the worry about the weather,

timing, safety, organization…suddenly it doesn’t seem so overwhelming to produce a running party for 800-900 guests. My goal is for every runner to exceed their goal, and then I will have exceeded mine.”
