it’s official — CBC to open Teacher education program in fall In 2013, CBC gained licensure in three areas from the Arkansas Department of Education: English, grades 7–12; Social Studies, grades 7–12; Physical Education and Health, grades K–12. See article on page four.

Central Baptist College Named to military friendly schools® list Victory Media, the premier media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, has named Central Baptist College to the coveted Military Friendly Schools® list. The 2013 Military Friendly Schools® list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus.

A first for CBC CBC graduate Lauren Gammel was accepted into medical school at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. She is the first CBC graduate to be accepted into medical school. She graduated CBC with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 2012.

CBC student media Team win Awards at Arkansas College press Association The Carillon yearbook and Tower Times newspaper of Central Baptist College received 21 awards at the Arkansas College Press Association state conference.

Mara Ramirez, editor-in-chief of the 2012 Carillon and a CBC graduate, was named Yearbook Editor of the Year.

rotaract Club receives presidential Award The Central Baptist College Rotaract Club was awarded the Presidential Citation “Peace Through Service” Award at the Conway Rotary Club meeting on Thursday, May 9, 2013. The award was presented by Rotary District Governor Dan Allen and Conway Rotary Club President Rik Sowell.

gabbard Celebrating 45 Years of service to CBC Judy Gabbard, Professor of Science and Chair of the Math and Science Department, celebrated 45 years of service to CBC in 2013. Gabbard was surprised with a certificate commemorating the naming of a book bay in her honor in the new Library and Learning Commons at the 2013 Employee Awards Celebration.

Sancy (Hutto) Faulk was named to the 20th class of the Arkansas Business’ 40 Under 40, an honor recognizing those under the age of 40 who excel in their profession and have had an impact on their community. Faulk, who joined Central Baptist College in 2003, currently serves as the Vice President for Advancement. Faulk was honored by Arkansas Business at a luncheon on June 14 at the Marriott Hotel in Little Rock.

Central Baptist College President Terry Kimbrow has been named Business Executive of the Year by the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce. The Business Executive of the Year award honors an owner, executive or president of a business who has displayed outstanding performance in either an individual or collaborative endeavor in Conway. People always ask me how our break is going now that the campus is closed for the summer. While students are away, our dedicated staff is on campus during normal business hours busily preparing for the fall semester and the return of our traditional students. PACE students continue to meet on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights throughout the year. So, while the campus is quieter, things do not slow down. In fact, for some offices, things are much busier than they are during the regular academic year. We are preparing for our largest fall enrollment in the history of the institution! I can’t wait to announce final enrollment numbers in late September. Pray with us for the hundreds of students that are making final decisions about attending Central Baptist College! We can’t wait to welcome them as new Mustangs in August!

While things are changing — new buildings are being constructed, more students are choosing Central Baptist College, the staff is increasing, degree programs are being added, the list could go on and on — I want you to remember that the same mission that existed when Central Baptist College was founded in 1952 still remains. Central Baptist College exists to integrate Christian faith and academic excellence. We pray for transforming life change to happen to our students while they are on our campus. Won’t you be a part of the life change that is taking place at Central Baptist College? Won’t you see that it isn’t what you can do, but what God can do through you? ANNuAl fuNd I am very excited to announce new developments in our annual fund! While capital fundraising, like Vision 2020, is designated to fund specific projects, donations to the annual fund meet the immediate needs of the college throughout the year. The annual fund supports the annual operating budget of the college.

Very soon you will be hearing about changes to how alumni and friends of the college can stay connected with Central Baptist College in a fun and informative way. Volunteer opportunities, new events, current news, prayer circles and new giving levels will all be announced this month. On this day, churches are asked to take a one-time offering for Vision 2020 and/or make a pledge to give additional offerings over the 12 months to follow. In 2012, 30 churches and one Sunday School class gave special offerings that totaled over $75,000 toward the $250,000 Vision 2020 Church Campaign goal. Vision 2020 is a plan to complete 10 major construction projects over a 10-year period to accommodate an enrollment of 2,020 students at CBC. the public kickoff for Vision 2020, A miracle in the making, was february 19, 2011. in just over two years, over $10 million has been raised toward the $12 million goal. Project #1, the david t. Watkins Academic Building, is complete. Project #2, the Library and Learning Commons, is currently under construction. Project #3, a new residence hall, is in the planning phase.

Work on the Library & Learning Commons began in earnest this spring. the steel structure was completed on may 14. the exterior building envelope, which includes the framing, sheathing, masonry and roof, are in progress and are scheduled to be completed by the end of July. once the building is in the dry, interior work will begin. the library is on schedule to be completed by the end of december. Watch for information about an open house soon!

Central Baptist College honored its 2013 graduates at a commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11. The class of 2013 was the largest single graduating class in the school’s history with a total of 120 graduates, 87 of those participating in the ceremony. This year, Dr. John David Smith delivered the commencement address.

Graduates celebrated the event at a pre-graduation reception in the CBC Dining Hall. The reception was catered by CBC Chef Jill McCollum and the CBC Dining Services team. Each graduate received a brick engraved with their name that will be laid in the CBC Legacy Walk, which runs from the Ratliff Bell Tower to College Avenue. Graduates also participated in before-and-after photos taken by local photographer Donna Evans. =

Thanks to the hard work and accomplishments of the CBC Education department, CBC will officially open its Teacher Education Program in the fall of 2013.

Programs approved are English-Language Arts, grades 7–12; Social Studies, grades 7–12; and Physical Education and Health, grades K–12. CBC students who complete Bachelor of Science in Education degrees in these areas will be recommended for Arkansas state teacher licensure.

CBC plans to seek state approval for programs in the following licensure areas: Elementary, Middle Level and Secondary Life Science.

Mrs. Shanda New, Education Department Chair, and Mrs. Lori Cole, Assistant Professor of Education, prepared proposals to the Arkansas Department of Education, and are to be commended for their work. Receiving program approval from the ADE is a major milestone for Central Baptist College. =

Central Baptist College President Terry Kimbrow announced that Dwain and Pam East of Conway have initiated a scholarship fund in honor of Arlis and Dorothy East. The scholarship fund was set up to honor the devotion and longtime service of the Easts in the ministry. Bro. and Mrs. East have always valued higher education and are strong supporters of Central Baptist College.

CBC President Terry Kimbrow said, “The scholarship is a fitting tribute to the legacy of a couple that has led by example in the BMAA and in their church for many years.”

Bro. East made his decision to surrender to the ministry under the guidance and direction of Pastor E. T. Burgess in December of 1955. He was licensed and ordained on September 14, 1956, at Berean Baptist Church in North Little Rock, Ark. After surrendering to the ministry, he continued his formal education at Columbia Baptist Bible College in Magnolia, Ark. He has been active in the ministry for 58 years and currently serves as pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in McGehee, Ark.

Prior to his pastorate in McGehee, he pastored churches in Lewisville, Ark., Springhill, La. and Texarkana, Texas. He served the Baptist Missionary Association of America as an interstate missionary in east Tennessee for seven years before returning to Arkansas to pastor churches in Prescott, Warren, Fordyce and Hampton. Bro. East has served on the board of trustees at Central Baptist College. He has served as moderator for both local and state affiliates of the Baptist Missionary Association. He is currently a chaplain for the Arkansas State Police and the Dallas County Sheriff ’s office.

Dorothy (Bailey) East graduated from Willisville High School and furthered her education at Draughon School of Business in Little Rock. She worked for New York Life Insurance Company and later retired from the Arkansas Department of Health. Arlis and Dorothy have been married for 61 years and reside in Sheridan. They have three children, Dwain, Tommy and Arlisa, seven grandsons and three great-grandsons.

The recipient of the scholarship, once endowed, will be a student majoring in the education program at CBC. According to Pam East, the family hopes the scholarship will help a student with a heart for education or a student who otherwise may not be able to afford to attend college. =


Homecoming 2013 was full of activities for both current and former CBC students. Alumni enjoyed tailgating, cheering on both the men’s and women’s basketball teams and a family and friends luncheon honoring Distiguished Alumnus Kenneth Brown. On Saturday, visitors were given the oppotunity to tour the new David T. Watkins Academic Building, and Brandi Box was crowned 2013 CBC Homecoming Queen.

hAlf-CeNTurY CluB A highlight of this year’s Homecoming activities included the induction of the first class into the Half-Century Club. Twenty-one graduates from the years 1952–1962 were inducted into the Club in a special ceremony Saturday, February 16, 2013, in the Ronald V. Mitchell Lecture Hall. Family and friends watched as each inductee was presented a medallion bearing the official Central Baptist College seal. Norman Crass, class of ‘61, followed the induction with comments about his time at CBC, both as a student and employee. Kenneth Brown, accompanied by his wife Marie, was recognized as an honorary member of the Half-Century Club.

1950’s Kenneth Brown (1952–1953) Bro. Brown taught for 40 years at CBC. He has more than 20 years of experience pastoring. He pastored at Pleasant Valley Church, needs Creek Church and Antioch and taught part time at UCA while teaching at CBC.

Marvin Loyd (1956) Served as a missionary for the BMA for 30 years and served as nehemiah project director for the BMAA. He has flown jungle missions in Bolivia and guatemala for 30 years in six different airplanes. He has one son, two daughters and seven grandchildren, and is married to Helen.

Dr. Jesse Thomas(1958) He and his wife, Betty, have two sons, one daughter and seven grandchildren. Dr. thomas has served as a public school teacher for nine years, and as a CBC professor for 43 years.

Charles Dan Fagala, Sr.(1959) Fagala has served 50 years in the ministry, and he is the pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Bella Vista, Ark. He and his wife Joyce have one son, one daughter, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Joyce Fagala(1959) Joyce is the pianist at Fellowship Baptist Church. She has worked at the University of Arkansas for three years, the gravette Medical Association for 16 years and Amark engineering & Manufacturing for nine years. Joyce is married to Charles Dan Fagala, Sr., and they have one son, one daughter, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

1950’s Dr. Joseph Earl Hughes (1959) Dr. Hughes is married to Donna and they have three daughters and eight grand-children. He has served for 54 years as a minister and serves as pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Marvell, Ark.

1960’s Marvin David Compton(1960) Bro. Compton is a retired pastor and is currently serving as pastor at the First Baptist Church in Lindale. He and his wife, Jean, have three sons, one daughter and five grand-children.

Ellen Courtney (1960) ellen worked at CBC for 35 years total. She has also worked at guy-Perkins High School and Mt. Vernon High School. She and her husband, Jim, have three daughters and four grandchildren.

Dr. Elton McCann (1960) Dr. McCann has served as a pastor for 56 years, and worked as a seminary professor for 26 years.

Linda McCann(1960) Linda has worked as a business teacher, english teacher, a pastor’s wife and a homemaker. She and her husband, elton, have one son, two daughters and six grandchildren.

James R. Raines(1960) Bro. Raines has served as pastor of Lynch View Baptist Church for 22 years. He served as CBC President for six years and has been a pastor for 60 years. He has two sons, one daughter and four grandchildren.

1960’s Gloria Threet (1961) gloria has served as a pastor’s wife both here and on the mission field. She has one son, three daughters, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Bobby Bean (1961) Bobby and his wife, Janet, have one son, one daughter and three grandchildren. His career path includes 21 years in public high school education, 19 years as resident church camp manager at Camp Paron and work with the gideons international.

Norman Crass(1961) norman retired from CBC in 1996 after 33 years of service. He is an active C.P.A. norman and his wife, norma, have two daughters and four grandchildren.

Ramona Hesser(1961) Ramona has served as church clerk at First Baptist of Caldwell for 10 years.

Betty Stevens(1961) Betty has one son, three daughters and four grandchildren. Betty served as a Business teacher in the Conway Public Schools for 25 years.

Janet Fink Bean(1962) Janet and her husband, Bobby, have one son, one daughter and three grandchildren. Janet taught school, title i, for 11 years, worked as a kitchen manager at church camp for 19 years, and has served as a gideon Auxiliary officer for 30 years.

Jim Herring(1962) Jim and his wife, Paulette, recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. they were married September 6, 1962, at the home of Rev. Kenneth Brown. Jim retired in 1994 after working in administration for the Pulaski County School District for 30 years.

1960’s Paulette Herring(1962) Paulette retired in 1994 after having worked for 31 years as a teacher and counselor in the Pulaski County School District. She has served as a CBC dorm hostess for five years, and CBC instructor (part-time) for 12 years. She has been involved as a Master gardner in Faulkner County for 10 years. Paulette is married to Jim, and they have one son.

Audrey Raines(1962) Audrey worked as a teacher in education for 40 years, the last 16 in administration at Warren Public Schools as Director of Southeast Arkansas Community Based education Center. She is currently the secretary at First Baptist Church in Damascus. Audrey married the late Carthel Raines, and they have two sons.

Joyce Rossi(1962) Joyce has two sons and two grandchildren. She is retired from the Conway Human Development Center, and last worked at Arkansas Work Force in Conway.

Don Speer (1962) Don retired from Wal-Mart in Bentonville, Ark., after 19 years. He then went to work for Morton Salt for seven years. He has one son, one daughter and seven grandchildren.

1980’s Johnny Rice(1988) Rice was awarded the boys Coach of the Year in 2012 at north Little Rock High School. He led the Charging Wildcats to a 28–1 record, including winning the final 27 games in a row. it was north Little Rock’s first boy’s basketball state championship since 1971. Rice also coached the 2013 Basketball All Stars east team.

1990’s Cody Calhoun (1999) Cody is now serving as the Campus Pastor at Fellowship Bible Church in Benton, Ark.

2000’sRebecca Raines (2005) Rebecca has taken an elementary teaching position in an international Christian school in South Korea, starting this next school year. She taught for several years in Conway at Conway Christian School, and is excited to serve god in this new capacity overseas. She is eager to stay in contact with fellow alumni via Facebook and email ([email protected]).

Eliezer Semedo(2007) eliezer and his wife, Ana, are to serve as missionaries in thailand.

Teresa Fletcher(2008) teresa was recently named to the Arkansas Business “40 Under 40” list. She is the executive Director of the Children’s Advocacy Alliance in Conway.

michael mayodirector of Annual givingPrior to his promotion, Michael served as Development Officer for one year. He graduated from CBC in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences degree. Mayo is a member of the Conway Kiwanis Club, the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassador committee, a member of the Chamber’s LEAD’s Group and coaches a high school home school basketball team. Michael is married to Lacie Mayo.

Recent new hires are: Lindsey Cosio, Administrative Assistant for PACE & Online Studies; Katie fleming, Student Records Assistant; stephanie hooten, VA Certifying Official; Lacie mayo, Personal Admissions Officer; Jayme Pavatt, Business Office Receptionist; Pam sims, Personal Admissions Officer for Non-Traditional Programs; Audrey stoker, Education Coordinator for PACE & Online Studies.

Two faculty members have also moved to full-time positions at CBC. They are Chad smith, Assistant Professor of English, and suzanne Banister, Assistant Professor of Music.sarah headley has been named Director of Housing and Resident Life. She previously served as Director of Student Life. Lori Lee recently changed positions at CBC and became the Human Resources Analyst. Lori served as the VA Certifying Official for two years.

dr. Aaron Bristernew CoachDr. Brister joins us from Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Georgia. At CBC, he will serve as Head Men’s baseball coach as well as professor of kinesiology. A native of Searcy, Brister graduated from Harding University before earning his Ph.D. in kinesiology from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. He is married to Billie Jean and they have three children. Brister serves as a licensed minister of the Gospel.

rachel Waymiredirector of student servicesPrior to her promotion, she served as Orientation Coordinator for two years. Waymire graduated from Arkansas Tech University in 2013 with a Master of Science in College Student Personnel. She is a member of the Conway Regional Women’s Council, the National Association of Student Personnel Association and the Arkansas College Personnel Association, among many others.

robin stephens-trubianodirector of military relationsShe obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications degree from Southern Arkansas University and has served in the United States Army. Robin and her family are members of Antioch Baptist Church in Conway where she has served as assistant 4th grade Sunday school teacher.

Phillip Bohnnew CoachBefore joining CBC as Head Men’s and Women’s soccer coach, Bohn served in these positions at Jamestown College in Jamestown, North Dakota. In 2012 he led the team to a record 16 victories and was named A.I.I. Coach of the Year. Bohn is currently working on obtaining a Masters of Science degree in kinesiology. He is married to Melody Kirkland Bohn.

The Central Baptist Mustangs had successful 2012–2013 seasons, having many teams place in the Midlands Collegiate American Conference (MCAC), going to the National Christian College Association of America (NCCAA) nationals and receiving MCAC conference honors and NCCAA regional honors.

Point guard for the Lady Mustangs basketball Alyssa Drake was named MCAC All-Conference and NCCAA All-Region. Women’s basketball also had two athletes named Scholar Athletes: Chelsea Gregory and Katie Bradway.

Men’s basketball had two athletes receive conference honors: Blake Hanney was recognized with MCAC All-Conference and NCCAA All- Region Honorable Mention, and Xavier Huskey was selected to be on the MCAC All-Freshman Team. Carl Corman, center for the men’s basketball team, broke the single season blocked shot record for CBC this year. Corman was one of the top five players in the nation, including NCAA, for most blocked shots this season.

Volleyball Alexandrea Simpson was chosen for MCAC All- Conference.

Wrestling had two athletes compete in the NAIA national tournament: Travis Shelnutt and John Lopez. Lopez, a red shirt freshman, was ranked #8 in NAIA heavyweight classification.

CBC golf took second place in the MCAC conference tournament Justin Burns, a junior, won the NCCAA individual championship. The golf team had four golfers selected to be MCAC All-Conference: Justin Burns, Jared Davis,

Cameron Angerman and Tyler Pinney. Along with being selected for All-Conference Pinney earned MCAC Freshman of the Year and Davis was selected as a Scholar Athlete.

The Lady Mustangs softball team maintained their success by finishing first in the MCAC conference, but placed second in the conference tournament after falling to Bellevue. Placing second did not hold them back from competing in the NCAA, where they finished fifth. The Lady Mustangs softball team also cleaned house for MCAC All-Conference honors: Christen Kirchner took home Player of the Year and All-American honors, Jessica Sheldon received Pitcher of the Year, and Peyton Jenkins was named Freshman of the Year. Along with those awards, Kirchner, Sheldon and Jenkins were selected for All-Conference, along with Faith Lund, Tracy Ratliff, Jessica Tickle, Samantha Luther and Haley Baugh. Ratliff and Tickle were also named Scholar Athletes.

For the first time in CBC baseball history, the team beat two nationally ranked teams and made their first-ever conference appearance. They beat York College, ranked #10, to secure a spot in the conference tournament. They did not stop once they got to the tournament, beating the ninth team in NAIA, Bellevue, to make it to the Conference Championship game. CBC baseball had three players selected for honors, including Brady Brashier, MCAC All- Conference; Myles Heibert, 2nd Team All-Conference; and John Atkins, named Scholar Athlete.

The CBC women’s soccer team had the following athletes receive all-conference honors: Brittney Kemper, Lexi Lewis, Becca Clements and Katie Baldridge. In men’s soccer, Caleb Dayer and Nicholas Doyle received all-conference honors. =

on saturday, April 27, Central Baptist College honored two inductees into the Central Baptist College sports hall of fame. The induction was held in conjunction with the CBC sports Awards ceremony in the CBC dining hall. The inductees included rick waters and Josh Austin, both CBC alums and basketball players.

Rick WatersRick Waters played basketball at Central Baptist College from 1980–82. He has a combined 27 years of experience in education, 11 as a high school principal and 18 as a coach. He is currently the principal at West Side High School in greers Ferry, Ark., and is scheduled to start his new role as the superintendent at the genoa Central School District in genoa, Ark., in July 2013. Some of his honors include being the Coach of the Year for Best Under the Sun, 3A, 3AA and 2AA in 1998, 1999 and 2005.

Josh AustinJosh Austin played basketball at CBC from 1999 to 2001 and coached CBC men’s basketball team from 2006 to 2011. As a CBC coach, he holds the record for the f irst and second most wins in a single season and coached the f irst CBC men’s basketball player to become an Academic All-American. He is currently the head coach for the men’s basketball team at Williams Baptist College in Walnut Ridge, Ark.
