A Very special Music and Worship Dedication Sunday

on September 28 in Traditions worship, we will celebrate our annual music and worship Dedication Sunday. This is a wonderful worship service in which we dedicate and commission all of the music and worship ministries for the year! from Adult to Children’s music, Handbells to Altar Guild, Hosts to Acolytes, there are so many different ways to get involved, and this particular Sunday is a good day to learn more about these ministries.

Also, during this dedication service, the Adult Chancel Choir CD Rejoice! A Celebration of Faith, Hope and Love will go on sale! This CD project has been in the works for many years and is finally coming to the congregation in hopes that this music will inspire, comfort, and enliven all who listen to it.

Come to the Sanctuary at 9:00 and 11:00 Am on Sunday, Sept. 28 to help us dedicate and commission our music and worship ministries for the year. And, come and pick up a CD!

Rejoice!! A Celebration of Faith, Hope, & Love

Bless your Neighbor

2014school supply drive

THANK You for Your SuPPorT of THE

Due to funding cuts, the need for teacher class-room supplies remains great. Therefore, as a part of fumCT’s Bless Your Neighbor outreach, the congregation of first Church blessed 171 teach-ers and school personnel at five area schools by donating copy paper, pens, pencils, hand sanitizer, boxes of facial tissue, and various cleaning sup-plies. multiple large boxes of the donated supplies, and hand-written notes of encouragement from members of our congregation, were delivered on Aug. 5 to each school for distribution to their teach-ers and staff.

“Dear members of this wonderful church family,I want to thank each and every one of you for taking time to bless our faculty, children and me personally. It truly touched me that you would (and have) kept us in your prayers.”God bless you,Kris DrenskySpecial Ed. Teacher, Walker Elementary

A special thanks to wells mcfarland and Jack Green for assisting with organizing and packing boxes of classroom supplies.

Marital Celebrations At first Church, we take great joy in sharing life’s celebrations together. Therefore, in ad-dition to announcing when new babies are born, we will begin publishing (per request) our members’ marriage celebrations: recent marriages and milestone wedding anniver-saries (25th, 50th, etc.). Church members are asked to submit the necessary informa-tion via email to [email protected] or by calling Ashley Green at 205/345-7261, ext. 17.

Supper is the most intimate meal there is, and since none but family or closest friends are ever included, invitations are invariably by word of mouth. The atmo-sphere of a luncheon is often formal, but informal luncheons and suppers differ in nothing except day and evening lights, and clothes. Strangers are occasionally invited to informal luncheons, but only intimate friends are bidden to supper.

—Emily Post

If you’re unfamiliar with Emily Post, she was an author active throughout the first half of the twentieth century and probably most well-known for her detailed opinions on etiquette. Her suggestions are lovely and thoughtful, but I wonder what she would have thought about how Jesus inter-acted in society.

And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, “This fellow wel-comes sinners and eats with them." (Luke 15:2)

Jesus even dined with the Pharisees at least once (Luke 11:37), but I doubt miss Post would have found his behavior at that dinner to be especially mannerly. we all know the importance of sharing meals, and anyone who has hosted a din-ner knows the stress of preparation and execution with elocution, but I’d like to turn the family dinner on its head a little with Table Talks.

You're invited to an introductory Table Talk dinner on October 21 at Kate Gates' home (1896 Inverness Pkwy) at 6:00 Pm. Please R.S.V.P. by Oct. 5. Let’s share good food with the intent to be present with one another, to be authentic with one another, and to talk about some of the topics taboo to the table. Let’s take 1 Corinthians 13 to heart and talk in love about real, and sometimes problematic, issues about faith, hope, and life in Christ. Because in Christ, we’re all family—“no more a stranger nor a guest, but like a child at home.”

*If you’re interested in hosting a future Table Talk, let me know! we’ll discuss available dates.

Thank you very much to all the hard-working Little Lambs committee mem-bers, volunteers & consign-ers who continue to make the Little Lambs sale a

huge success. The Children’s ministry appre-ciates all the time, energy and effort put into each sale. Thanks also to the church staff who help the committee make the sale run smooth-ly; to our church members for your patience trying to find parking, donating items and for your continued support of the sale; and to the husbands, fathers & grandparents who help during the hectic week of Little Lambs! Every-one plays a role in making the sale a reality!

Local Outreachfirst Church helped the summer end in a great way for 76 local children by sponsoring a trip for them to the Birmingham Zoo. August 5 summer campers at the Benjamin Barnes YmCA sum-mer camp, along with 15 adult chaperones, rode in two chartered buses from the Barnes YmCA and back, lunched on pre-ordered

fast-food meals and toured the zoo. This trip was the first time the majority of the children had been to the zoo. To read more about this trip made possible by FUMCT, scan the code here.

Discovery 2014 was fantastic. I could overwhelm you with numbers but I really believe that would distract you from the real gain.

1. Students heard the Gospel from high school students who are passionately chasing after Jesus daily.

2. we worshipped unhindered and that contin-ues to permeate our schools and this town.

3. Parents prayed for, loved on and served their children. That continues today and I pray will become the model for all that we do in family ministry.

I am proud to have served alongside adults and students who understand this was not just about a weekend. we intend to join Jesus in His revival of our ministry, our Church and in this town. To God be the glory for He has done great things. See you on Sundays and wednesdays as we continue to serve together.

Stop Hunger Now 2014on Sunday, October 5 we will hold our second annual “Stop Hunger Now” food-packing mission project. we will meet in the Church Activity Center (CAC) beginning at 9:00 Am on Sunday, oct. 5 to begin our packaging of 20,000 meals. we will continue to package meals until we reach this 20,000 meal goal. for indi-viduals or small groups joining us during the event, we will have communion served during the two worship hours. This food-pack-aging project is a wonderful time for Sunday school classes and/or small groups to come together to do a mission project. we look forward to having you join us on this day to be in mission together. If you are interested in learning more, visit to www.stophunger-now.org. If you have questions about the packing event, please contact Joshua Davis at 205.345.7261.
