SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI (1182-1226) October 4 When Franco Zeffirelli’s Brother Sun, Sister Moon was released (1972), people were shocked by the movie’s graphic nudity in the dramatic conversion scene. Son of a wealthy merchant, Francis’ aimless adolescence ended when a failed military expedition led to his imprisonment and complete breakdown. Once home, Francis rediscov-ered God in the beauty of nature and the ugliness of hu-man suffering, caring for lepers, praying in the little church of San Damiano, whose crucified Jesus he heard calling, “Repair my house, Francis, which is falling into ruins.” Francis sold his possessions—and his father’s—to fulfill this command. When his father objected, Francis disrobed: “I return the clothes, your name, and all you gave me: God alone is my Father now.” Later, the pope would dream of a ragged friar stretching forth a single hand to prop up the crumbling papal Cathedral of Saint John Lateran. Francis indeed helped rebuild the universal Church, founding the Friars Minor (Franciscans), dying at a young forty-four, bearing the stigmata of the Christ whose living icon he remains—in the Church and far be-yond it. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. SAN FRANCISCO DE ASÍS (1182-1226) 4 de octubre Francisco nació en Asís, Italia, en la familia Bernardo-ne, una familia rica dedicada al comercio de telas. A los veinte años se unió al ejército y cayó prisionero y enfer-mo; durante su recuperación algo cambió en él y comen-zó a descubrir a Dios en lo ordinario de la vida. Sus en-cuentros con Dios en la contemplación de la naturaleza fueron cada vez más frecuentes hasta que descubrió que los verdaderos tesoros están en el cielo. Regaló los bie-nes de su padre a los pobres, pero su padre, Pietro, esta-ba tan molesto que después de golpearlo lo llevó frente al obispo. Ahí, Francisco se desnudó y le dio su ropa, pues pertenecía a su padre y se fue a vivir a una pequeña igle-sia llamada Porciúncula. Dios le pidió que renovara la Iglesia, pero no materialmente, sino espiritualmente. ¡Y lo hizo! Recordó la esencia de vivir pobre para abrazar así a los pobres, que son la única riqueza. The Rite Of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process that companions those seeking to move closer to Jesus Christ and his Church. It welcomes those who are curi-ous about the Catholic faith, as well as

TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME CONNECTED TO TRADITION The Church presents today’s Old Testament and Gospel readings together, as a pair. We delight in the symmetry between the two passages. Jesus, who is the Word of God, knows the Hebrew scriptures by heart and intends for his parable to echo Isaiah. As Jesus begins speaking, he summons the words of Isaiah, knowing his learned audience of chief priests and elders will feel com-fortable with a familiar scripture passage. These scholars recognize immediately that Jesus is referring to a pro-phetic passage about sin, about the chosen people’s ten-dency to turn away from God and grow “wild.” AMAZED BY INNOVATION What Jesus does next surprises his audience. He adds a new twist to Isaiah’s well-known words, adding a new character, the landowner’s very own son. Adding this innovation shows that Jesus confirms the prophet’s warn-ing—that God longs for “his cherished plant” to grow ac-cording to the divine plan. The narrative twist also allows Jesus to reveal the fullness of God’s plan in a way his au-dience can understand. Like a master teacher, Jesus re-spects the knowledge and faithfulness of the chief priests and elders, and then builds on what they know. By add-ing the landowner’s son to the parable of the vineyard, Jesus gently expresses his own mission as the Son of God. Matthew’s Gospel often depicts the chief priests and elders as oppositional; they worry that Jesus will abolish the law and foment rebellion. As the Lord said earlier in Matthew’s Gospel, however, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill” (Matthew 5:17). Jesus’ audience is skeptical about him, horrified at the thought of a mere human being claiming that he is the Son of God. Jesus’ masterful approach provides an opportunity for his audi-ence to give him the benefit of the doubt. In this way, Jesus proposes—not imposes—his kingship, inviting us all to follow him. CONECTÁNDOSE A LA TRADICIÓN La Iglesia presenta a la lectura del Antiguo Tes-tamento y del Evangelio juntas, como un par. Nos ale-gramos con la simetría entre los dos pasajes. Jesús, que es la Palabra de Dios, conoce de memoria las Escrituras hebreas y pretende que su parábola haga eco a Isaías. Cuando Jesús empieza a hablar invoca las palabras de Isaías, sabiendo que su audiencia son los principales sa-cerdotes y ancianos que son conocedores de las Escritu-ras y su interpretación, estarían familiarizados con ese pasaje de las Escrituras. Por eso reconocen inmediata-mente que Jesús se refería a un pasaje profético sobre el pecado, sobre la tendencia del pueblo elegido de alejarse de Dios y volverse “salvaje”. SORPRENDIÉNDOSE POR LA INNOVACIÓN Lo que Jesús hace a continuación sorprende a su audiencia; añade un nuevo giro a las palabras muy cono-cidas de Isaías, añade un nuevo personaje, el propio hijo del dueño de las tierras. Al añadir esta innovación mues-tra que Jesús confirma la advertencia del profeta, que Dios anhela que “su preciada planta” crezca según el plan divino. Que el ardiente y dulcísimo poder de tu amor, Oh Señor Jesucristo, te ruego, absorba mi mente de tal modo que pueda morir por amor de tu amor, quien bendigamente quiso morir por mi amor; de mi amor.

ACTS FUNDRAISER

ACTS Ministry will have a food sale to raise money for our parish and its ministry Sunday, October 11.

The cost of the plate is $ 10 dollars that includes: brisket, sausage, potato salad, rice, bread and a drink. Food will be distributed from 10:00am-3:00pm in front of the church.

ACTS members will be outside the church for presale tick-et during the 9AM, 11:30AM, 2PM and 5PM Sunday mass-es.
