Gregory Kay, Founder and President
Lighting designer and founder of three major contemporary lighting companies, including Pure Lighting, Gregory Kay is best known for his Monorail and Cable Light designs. Recognition for his talents in lighting and fixture design includes the Edwin F. Guth Memorial Award for Interior Lighting Design and several Lightfair Best Fixture Design awards, among other top honors. In 1985, his first company established the North American market for low voltage open conductor systems, and since then he has kept his place at the forefront of the industry. At Edge Lighting, he heads an international group of designers, engineers and fabricators that focus on technological innovation.
A GREEN FUTURE
We are on the cusp of a revolution in lighting: LED (light emitting diode) solid state lamps offer 50,000 working hours, small size and low power consumption. This technology is quickly advancing and its enormous potential is clear. Example:
All fixtures come standard with a male Fast Jack (FJ) connector . Fast Jack is the universal connector that joins all Edge Lighting low voltage products. Fixtures equipped with Fast Jack can be quickly installed in, and moved between, single or multi-port ceiling canopies and Monorail systems. Fast Jack allows the designer or homeowner to easily install, change or adjust the lighting scenario to fit changing moods and seasons.
Order fixtures for use with Monorail systems by selecting the correct matching connector code: Monorail (M), Monorail 2 Circuit (M2) or Monorail Wall (MW). Select the Fast Jack connector (FJ) when buying fixtures for FJ canopies (sold separately on p. 92-95).

WHAT Is MoNoRAIL? Form, function and flexibility above-and-beyond the traditional track system, contemporary Monorail systems offer a simple solution to complex lighting applications. The safe-to-touch low voltage system features hand-bendable, pre-bent or custom bent rail with a variety of heads and pendants to enhance and illuminate a multitude of spaces that can follow architectural features.
WHy usE EDGE LIGHTING MoNoRAIL sysTEMs? Developed by pioneering engineers in low voltage lighting, Edge Lighting Monorail systems accommodate advancements in lighting technology, allowing compatibility with LEDs and sustainable design practices. Some distinguishing features of Edge Lighting Monorail systems include:
1. Rail mounts just 1" from the ceiling in applications using either surface mount (p. 58) or remote transformers (p. 56).
2. The electronic surface mount transformers (p. 59) are a compact, lightweight alternative to traditional magnetic transformers (p. 58).
3. Monorail seamless push-in connectors join rail sections easily without tools, providing a clean, finished look (p. 54).
4. Monorail solid “L”, “T” and “x” shaped connectors along with flexible connectors, allow unlimited rail configurations (p. 54).

The revolutionary LED Monorail Kits feature a 60 watt transformer small enough to fit inside a standard junction box in the ceiling, while the 4" round power feed canopy eliminates the need for running low voltage wiring from a remote located transformer. Use one of these combinations to achieve a direct replacement for 250 watts of halogen light: Six Scope LED fixtures (9 watts each), eight LED MR16 fixtures (7 watts each) or 18 LED MR16 fixtures (3 watts each).

Atlas LED presents a high level of accent lighting for retail displays, galleries, museums or offices. Providing uniform illumination without UV, IR or the use of mercury, the 19 watt LED lamp is an energy efficient alternative for a 120 watt PAR 38 spot or 71 watt MR16 lamp (see p.211). The cool-to-the-touch fixture allows manual locking of 360° rotation, 90° tilt, and optical lens orientation. reMOte eLeCtrONiC traNSFOrMerS Remote electronic transformers are compact, lightweight and feature built-in short-circuit protection. in the event of a short or overload, reset transformer at wall switch once short or overload is corrected. The te-60L-12 is both 12 volt AC Led and halogen compatible. The te-60L-12 fits inside a 4" electrical box behind a power feed canopy. For more technical information on transformers, see pp. 208-209.
reMOte MagNetiC traNSFOrMerS Remote magnetic transformers must be installed in an accessible location, such as an attic or in a closet, no more than 20 feet from the power feed canopy. The transformers convert line voltage into 12 or 24 volt power and are protected by fast-acting circuit breakers. The safe-to-touch low voltage output powers Monorail systems up to 300 watts for 12 volt or 600 watts for 24 volt lamps. A 600 watt, 12 volt dual feed transformer should be used with a dual feed power canopy. Compatible dimmers are connected on the line voltage side of transformers. Some buzzing may occur at low levels and may be reduced with a de-buzzing coil (p. 206). All 12 volt remote magnetic transformers are Led compatible with 12 volt AC Leds. 1" rigid standoff The 1" (2.5cm) Rigid Standoff is compatible with all standard power feed canopies and surface mount transformers.
rigid standoff Rigid standoffs are available in heights of 1.9" (4.8cm), 6" (15.2cm), 12" (31cm), 24" (61cm), 36" (91cm), 48" (122cm) or 96" (244cm). Standoffs are field-cuttable and best suited for runs with heavier fixtures.
MonoRaiL 2 CiRCUiT STanDoFFS Standoffs are available in rigid or adjustable versions. Use standoffs approximately every 3' (91cm) of Monorail 2 Circuit run. For best appearance, place standoffs near rail ends and at points where rails join together. Use rigid standoffs for curved runs or runs with heavier fixtures.

remote magnetic transformers Remote magnetic transformers must be installed in an accessible location, such as an attic or in a closet, no more than 20 feet from the power feed canopy. The transformers convert line voltage into 12 volt power and are protected by fast-acting circuit breakers. The safe-to-touch low voltage output powers Monorail 2 circuit systems up to 300 watts per circuit for 12 volt lamps. a T-4x300-12 (consists of 2 pieces of T-2x300-12) dual feed transformer should be used with a dual feed power canopy.
Compatible dimmers are connected on the line voltage side of transformers. Some buzzing may occur at low levels and may be reduced with a de-buzzing coil (p. 206). Remote transformers are LED compatible with 12 volt aC LEDs; both circuits must have either halogen or LED load, fixtures cannot be combined. For more technical information on transformers, turn to pp. 208-209 and for LEDs, to pp. 15 and 210.
