Competency 15: Employ New Media Devices for Learning or Presenting

Nancy Jimenez

Use of Technology in the Classroom

My students are lucky to have access to many new technological devices. Among those used at my school by staff and students alike are:-Elmo projector: projects books, photos, documents (anything placed under it’s

lens) unto the SmartBoard)-NEO- device used for independent reading, students can track number of books

read and take quizzes on them after completion, can also be used to poll students in the classroom (they are also capable of sending messages to each other)-Smartboard: interactive presentations; display audio/video-Laptops: conduct research, create written performance tasks (pamphlets,

powerpoints, and word documents)-Camcorders: record lessons and presentations for peer/teacher feedback or

projects-Cellphones: voting and polltaking apps used in Social Studies-Ipad: Social Studies/ELA quests (using online sites); educational games, use as

gradebook (Engrade)

1. FlipCam Video: I created this video to be used by multiple classes for a “Recycling & Sustainability” ETS. This allowed varies classrooms to participate in an experiment even when there weren’t enough resources to go around. Students made hypothesis based on the video. The following week, another video was made and played in all classrooms to show the results of the experiment. The students featured are ELL’s.

2. Class Dojo: This is an app I use on my phone (it is also accessible online on my laptop) that allows me to track behavior in my class. I can also project Class Dojo unto my SmartBoard and students can see and hear (it dings!) when I give/deduct a point. Points are given/deducted based on class participation, being on task, behavior, etc. The student with the most points that day can earn a prize, extra credit, or a positive phone call home.

1. Iphone Video: Early in the school year I began filming students (emergent Bilinguals) to track certain English speaking skills (mainly speaking and listening). This is an example of one of those videos.
