About Colburn Community School of Performing Arts

About Colburn Community School of Performing ArtsThe Colburn Community School of Performing Arts (CSPA) serves students of all ages with classes in music, dance, drama and early childhood arts education, taught by acclaimed faculty committed to providing the highest quality teaching on a modern campus designed solely for excellence in performance and education.

Founded in 1950 as an open-enrollment school, the CSPA covers a broad range of styles, age levels and degrees of difficulty. Music classes include applied musical instruction, music theory, chamber ensemble and orchestral opportunities. Dance classes through the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute offer a wide range in disciplines from ballet, tap, modern, creative, jazz and musical theatre dance. In addition to their individual studies, Colburn students participate in a variety of community outreach programs and perform in more than 300 concerts and recitals each year, many of which are free and open to the public.

The Colburn Community School of Performing Arts has been accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) since 1980 and is also a member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education.

Adaptive Music Program/Lessons for Individuals with Special NeedsThe CSPA provides a special program for adults and children with academic or learning challenges. The Adaptive Music Program (AMP) provides individualized music programming and adapted music instruction by qualified specialist Ms. Francesca Bori.

Students with special needs have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument within a therapeutic environment designed to develop one’s own potential. This process begins with a structured music -based assessment of motor skills, behavioral, social and emotional levels, attention and communication ability. Monthly meetings with parents and yearly written summaries provide an opportunity to review the progress of the student. For more information, please contact Ms. Bori at [email protected]

All students must register before they can attend class. Space is available on a first come first served basis, continuing students have two weeks of priority registration.

All Private Instruction must take place on the Colburn School campus. Individual lesson schedules are arranged between the instructor and

the student. All new students must first submit an Online Inquiry Form through colburnschool.edu. The information will be transferred to

the appropriate department chair who will then contact the student to schedule an informal interview/audition within two weeks of

receipt. Upon completion of the interview, the department chair will determine which instructor, if any, the student can be placed with.

The Early Childhood Program introduces young children to music and the performing arts. The curriculum is skill-based and is designed to explore music,

theory, voice, movement, and drama. Enrollment in classes is strictly determined according to the age of the child and classes themselves may be repeated

if the faculty determines it would be beneficial to the child. Classes are in high demand, and enrollment closes very quickly; waitlists are maintained once a

class is closed. If your child is new to Colburn, please contact the CSPA office to learn more about registration procedures. Please note: An adult must

accompany the child for the entire duration of the class. In most classes, parents are invited to participate at the level of involvement determined by

the teacher. Only one parent or caregiver may participate in the class; siblings or other family members are not allowed to participate or sit in the

classroom. Fall Semester classes are 16 weeks in length.

Students must be between the ages of 4 years old - 4 years and 11 months by the first day of the semester. The class provides musical experiences in the

development of motor and ear-training skills, hand-eye coordination, a sense of keyboard geography, finger dexterity, and concentration. This course

offers pre-reading exercises to develop the child's keyboard sense. Students must have access to an acoustic (not electronic) piano for daily practice.

Registration is first-come, first-served and all new parents are required to meet with Department Chair, Ms. Martin for a private consultation regarding proper class placement. Parents may b egin

Group piano classes are ideal for the absolute beginner with no prior experience. Due to its popularity, spaces are very limited. Please contact the CSPA

Office to be placed on a waiting list with the student name, age, and preference in class day/time. When a space opens up, the students on the waiting list

will be contacted for an interview. If your child is between ages 4-5 please refer to the Exploring the Keys class in the Early Childhood section on the

previous page.

A class designed for students who have had some group musical experiences playing percussion instruments, recorder, and/or ukulele. This ensemble of

mixed instrumentation will develop the students' musicianship/improvisational skills as they create layered soundscapes.

Please note: An adult must accompany the child for the entire duration of the class. In most classes, parents are invited to participate at the level of

involvement determined by the teacher. Only one parent or caregiver may participate in the class; siblings or other family members are not allowed to

participate or sit in the classroom. Fall semester classes are 16 weeks in length.

Ideal for students who wish to learn finger dexterity and tonguing technique to one day play a woodwind or brass instrument. The recorder class builds

playing skills through reading music in a group setting while developing hand-eye coordination. Class size is limited to up to 3-4 students. Co-enrollment in

Dalcroze is highly encouraged, registration for both classes will receive a $50 discount.

Students in the Children's Opera Workshop gain beginning experience in musical drama through children's opera. Students learn appropriate mini operas

and vocal improvisation to familiar stories, and study children's choruses from the standard opera repertoire. Students also are exposed to simple set

design and construction. In the spring semester, students present a one-act opera in public performance. Extra pre-concert rehearsals are required.

The Community Chorale attracts adult singers committed to learning and performing sophisticated repertoire, meeting weekly to foster musical and

artistic development through rehearsals and the study of vocal works. Auditions for the Colburn Community Chorale take place throughout the year, please

contact [email protected] to schedule an audition.

The Drama Program begins with improvisation, body movement, and theater games, and progresses to monologue, scene work, script analysis, and

character development. The program strongly emphasizes process over product, creating a learning environment in which students are free to explore and

take risks -- to work without fear of judgment. The goal is to prepare each student for the experience of performing for an audience. Fall semester classes

are 16 weeks.

Participation in this ensemble requires a year-long commitment in the fall and spring semester. You will be automatically billed in January for your spring

semester tuition. If you cannot continue in the spring, you must request to drop the course by submitting a signed drop form approved by the director to the

Chamber Music Ensemble CHMI 101-120 $40 per hour x 10 weeks of coaching during the fall semester $400All coaching is arranged directly with instructor and fellow ensemble members.

The Suzuki method, founded by Japanese violinist Dr. Shinichi Suzuki (1898-1998), rests on the philosophy that every child is born with musical ability that

can be nurtured and developed to a high level. The method requires parental participation in every lesson and in-home daily practice, and a major

commitment of time. Prior to enrollment, an extensive application process begins with submitting an Online Inquiry Form. Student placements have

already been determined for the 2017-18 academic year. New students must inquire before January 15 for consideration for the following 2018-19

academic year. Children must be at least 4 years old and no older than 6 by January 15, 2018 to be eligible. To learn more, visit colburnschool.edu/cspa

All students participating in the Suzuki String Program are required to register for both private instruction and a weekly Suzuki group class at the

Colburn School for both the fall and spring semesters.

The CSPA offers one of the most comprehensive and intense pre-college level chamber music learning experiences of any music school in North America.

Students are coached weekly by members of Colburn’s nationally acclaimed faculty. Ensembles from the Institute have been prize winners in numerous

competitions, including the Fischoff Competition, Coleman Chamber Music Competition and the Young Artists Peninsula Music Festival, and have appeared

on the nationally syndicated Public Radio International series From the Top. Participation in this program requires a year-long commitment in order to be

part of an end of year culminating performance recital. You will be automatically billed in January for your spring semester tuition. If you cannot continue

in the spring, you must request to drop the course by submitting a signed drop form approved by the director to the registration office between Dec 1 - Jan

Small Chamber Ensemble and group class for intermediate level students with little or no prior chamber music experience that will prepare students for the

Chamber Music Institute. During the fall semester, the students will meet eleven times in their assigned chamber ensembles and receive personalized

coaching sessions. The semester will begin with a mandatory parent and student orientation meeting on September 3 and be followed by four monthly

group classes. Participation in this program requires a year-long commitment in order to be part of an end of year culminating performance recital. You will

be automatically billed in January for your spring semester tuition. If you cannot continue in the spring, you must request to drop the course by submitting

The Colburn Cello Ensemble is for intermediate and advanced students aged 11 or older. The group plays a variety of repertoire from all genres--classics,

movie music, pop tunes, original works for cello--including arrangements done by members of the group. The Cello Ensemble participates regularly in the

Colburn Musical Encounter program as well as more formal concerts. Please contact [email protected] for approval to enroll.

Based on the concept of a drum circle, this ensemble will concentrate on group interplay and the development of percussive ideas without depending on

conventional musical notation. The focus in more on the rhythmic and musical ideas inherent in all music, regardless of style or idiom. Using different ethnic

drums and percussion instruments, this ensemble is suitable for drummer and non-drummers alike.

For beginning and intermediate students of all ages to learn the basics of chamber percussion emphasizing standard concert percussion instruments as

well as an introduction to some world music forms. Each term will culminate in a joint concert with the Colburn Chamber Percussion Ensemble. Please

Courses in music theory are critical to every student's musical education. The CSPA offers a progression of courses ranging from the most basic concepts

such as reading pitches and rhythm in the treble and bass clefs, to the most complex analysis of ultra-chromatic harmony of the 19th century. Courses are

year-long and require enrollment in both the Fall and Spring semesters. You will be automatically billed in January for your spring semester tuition. If you

cannot continue in the spring, you must request to drop the course by submitting a signed drop form approved by Ms. Sawada to the registration office

between Dec 1 - Jan 10 in order to not be automatically charged for the full spring semester tuition fee. The same procedure must be followed if you wish to

switch sections and attend on a different class day. If a student has not previously enrolled in Music Theory, they must take a placement evaluation before

Colburn's Adult Jazz Combos consist of musicians who are proficient on their instruments and experienced in jazz studies. Various styles of jazz repertoire

are explored and learned aurally along with some discussion of jazz theory and approaches to improvisation. This ensemble is a great opportunity for

adults to grow individually and as a cohesive unit in an encouraging, challenging environment. All instruments (including strings) are welcome. There will

Learn to play the guitar parts to classic rock songs by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Santana, Led Zeppelin and others in this fast-paced 16-week course.

Technical and theoretical explanations will enhance your understanding of this important era in popular music. Electric guitar is required, amps are

provided.

PLEASE READ THE NEW SCHOOL POLICY BELOW REGARDING THE DROP PROCEDURE FOR COURSES THAT REQUIRE YEAR-LONG ENROLLMENT

Registration ProcedureThe registration procedures at The Colburn School are designed to place students in appropriate courses through interviews, a uditions, and other screening methods. These procedures help to minimize enrollment in inappropriate courses, and to minimize the need to d rop lessons and classes. Registration must be completed during the Formal Registration period listed on the Academic Calendar to avoid a late fee. Any student who registers after the Formal Registration period will be subject to a $25 late registration fee.

Drop/Withdraw ProcedureThe parent/student must complete and submit the Drop Form either in person, via email or fax, prior to the first day of the s emester. Once receipt is confirmed by the CSPA office, prior to the first day of the semester, the request to drop the class, ensemble, and /or private instruction will be reviewed by the Dean. Upon the Dean’s approval, 100% of the tuition is refunded. Anytime during the first week of the semester, 75% of the tuition is refunded. After the first week through the second week, 50% of the tuition is refunded. After the second week through the third week, 25% of the tuition is refunded. After the third week, there are NO REFUNDS.

Informing an instructor of a decision to withdraw, stopping payment, or not attending class does not constitute a withdrawal. Exceptional requests for refunds due to a family or medical emergency may be made in writing to the Dean within 14 days of the missed cla ss and must include appropriate documentation. There is no guarantee that a full refund will be approved due to a family or medical emerg ency.

For classes and ensembles that require a year-long commitment, students may request to drop the spring semester during the formal drop period. The formal drop period for the 2017-18 academic year is defined as December 1, 2017 - January 10, 2018. A drop form must be submitted to the program director for signature and approval. Then, the student is responsible for submitting the signed drop form to the CSPA Registration Office for further processing and approval by the Dean. If, and only if, the drop is approved by the Dean, the student will not be charged for the spring semester tuition. If a student does not follow this drop procedure, they will be liable fo r the full payment of spring semester tuition regardless of their inability to attend classes.

Community School Policies (continued)

Absence PoliciesStudents must notify faculty of anticipated absences as a courtesy to the faculty members; however, this does not exempt the student from payment as contracted. There will be no makeup lessons for student absences. If a teacher is absent from a scheduled lesson, a make-up lesson shall be scheduled at a mutually convenient time. If the student misses a make-up lesson, there will be no second make-upopportunity. In cases of sudden illness on the part of the teacher, the teacher and The School shall make every reasonable at tempt to notify students.

Suspension Delinquency in payment of tuition and fees may result in suspension of a student's enrollment. Suspended students shall not b e allowed to attend classes, rehearsals, or lessons; instruction shall be resumed only upon full payment of any balance due and with appro val of the Registrar. There will be no credit or make-up for any lessons or classes missed because of suspension.

PaymentsPayment must accompany the registration form. Payment of tuition and fees is expected in full at the time of enrollment unles s a payment plan is requested. Upon approval of a payment plan, all payments are due on or before the 15 th of the month. All payment plan arrangements must be made directly with the Cashier’s Office. Any payments received after the 15th will be automatically assessed a $25 late fee. Subsequent late fees will be charged every month until payment is received.

Private InstructionAll private instruction must take place on campus at The Colburn School at 200 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA

Key Card Access/Student ID BadgesIn an effort to enhance campus security, each family will be given two key cards to access the building at all times. All stu dents must request a key card at the security desk on Grand Avenue and show proof of current enrollment. Key cards will be required to enter build ings, access elevators and use of the library. Please pay attention to posted signs and requests made by security guards to show your card key. Lost card keys can be replaced for a fee of $25.

Parking With a student population of 1,800 students, parking at the Colburn School is not guaranteed. A limited number of spaces are available to CSPA families on a first come first served basis. Families can receive up to two parking decals upon completing registration . However, a parking decal does not constitute a guaranteed parking space . On a busy day when there is a line of cars waiting to enter the garage, students may be dropped off in front of the school on Grand Avenue. There is a loading area in front of the doors across from the Broad Museum. After dropping off your student, please make your way to Lower Grand and patiently wait in line for a parking space t o open in the garage. If you do not wish to wait for a spot to open, offsite parking at a discounted rate is available at Lot #3 on the sou theast corner of Olive and 2nd Street. Please inquire at the Cashier window to purchase validations in advance.
