Stamford’s first Wassailing…With the revival of interest in traditional orchards

and the growth of community orchards, wassailing is

becoming part of the calendar once again. But although

familiar with the word ‘wassailing’, most of us are not

sure of what it means or where the word comes from.

‘Wassail’ comes from the Anglo-Saxon waes haeil – ‘Be

well’, ‘Be in good health,’ and in the past was commonly

used as a greeting between the lord of the manor and the

peasant workers.

and pans; blow cow (or other) horns;

and fire shot guns through the top-

most branches. This will drive away

evil spirits and to awaken the sleeping

trees. Once the work is done, the

crowd moves off to the next orchard.

On January 14th 2012, Stamford will

have its first-ever Wassailing event

at Stamford Community Orchard (to

be found at the end of Christ Church

Close, off Green Lane). Come and join

in the fun which will begin after the

sunset, at 4 pm. Members of Woven

Chords will be singing and there will

be songs for all to join in. Local cider

and apple juice will be on offer.

For more details, please contact

01780 484180

Wassailing is an old custom originating

in English cider making districts, and

traditionally it took place after dark

on January 17th, the Old Twelfth

Night, but it could also occur on other

days around Christmas and the New

Year. The purpose of wassailing was

to awaken the apple trees and, by

scaring away evil spirits, to encourage

them to fruit well the following season.

The wassailing customs vary from

village to village but they generally all

have the same elements. A Wassail

King and Queen lead the proceedings

where cider is poured onto the roots

of the largest or most productive tree,

considered to be the guardian of the

orchard and known as the Apple Tree

Man. ‘Wassail’ (warm spiced cider)

is then drunk and toast soaked in

Wassail is placed by the Queen in the

branches ‘for the robins’ - guardian

spirits of the tree. The tips of the

lowest branches are often drawn

down and dipped into the cider.

Wassailing songs are also sung and

‘Wassailing charms’ often recited, for

example:

Old apple tree,We wassail

thee,Hoping thou wilt bear,Hatsfuls,

capsfuls,

Three bushel bagsfuls, And a little

heap under the stairs and Hip! Hip!

Hooray!

The proceedings culminate in a lot of

noise when the gathered crowd sing

and shout; beat drums, buckets, pots

DEEPING FIRST RESPONDERSThe local Deepings First

Responders volunteer group

( L.I.V.E.S.) is seeking new members to serve the

community. A Deepings First Responders volunteer

responds to 999 calls and provides basic life support

until the ambulance arrives.

David has been a First Responder volunteer for eight years.

When David is on call, he can still enjoy usual activities

such as gardening, watching television or going out for a

meal. When a call comes in, David’s wife takes details of

the call, whilst he prepares to attend. David is not a Doctor

or a Paramedic, but someone who has been provided with

training and equipment by the Lincolnshire Integrated

Volunteer Emergency Service organisation.

If you feel you would like to find out more about becoming

a Responder in the Deepings, or would like just to become

involved with the organisation in other roles then please

get in contact with Helen Bembridge, 01778 344330,

or come along to the monthly meeting

which starts at 6.30pm on the fourth

Wednesday of the month at the

FOOTPRINTS WESTGATE PETERBOROUGH NAME CHANGE TO NORTH SHOESIT has a new name – but it’s business as usual at a city shoe store.

Footprints at 10 Westgate will be known as North Shoes

to reflect the fact that it is no longer just a children’s and

ladies’ shoe store, but now offers men’s footwear, too.

Customers can be assured of the same level of expertise

and customer service that the store has become renowned

for, with manageress Rosemary Gray - who has worked

in the premises since they became a shoe store in 1987

- still at the helm. Bourne-based family shoe firm North

Shoes took over Footprints in 2009. The company has been

running for 135 years and has built a solid reputation as

fitting specialists.

On the shelves, you’ll still find children’s brands by Ricosta,

Start-rite, Geox, Primigi, Lelli Kelly, Kickers, Converse,

Fitflop and Petasil and ladies’ footwear by Reiker , Ecco,

Hotter, Van Dal , Easy B, Converse, Fitflop, Padders,

Zodiaco, Remonte and Waldlaufer. But they’ve now been

joined by men’s brands Rieker, Anatomic, Easy B & Loake.

The store is still open from 9am-5pm Monday to Saturday,

and from 11am-3pm on Sundays.

‘Unique’ charity fund attracts over 50 local organisations in first year Market Deeping–based Comptons Property Agents has

accepted over 50 local charities, community groups

and organisations in to their new charitable fund.

Launched at their annual charity ball in September the

Comptons Charitable Fund will make a donation every

time Comptons sell a house.

Organisations including Peterborough Citizen Advice

Bureau, The Riverside Association of Music and Arts,

Stamford Skatepark CIC and Deeping Rugby Union Football

Club have all signed up to the fund.

At a recent funding workshop the scheme was branded

as “unique” by the Peterborough Council for Voluntary

Services.

Now over fifty organisations are set to become the first

beneficiaries of the fund. It means that every time

Comptons Property Agents sells a home they are committed

to provide a £100 grant to one of those organisations.

The person whose house is sold will pick the member the

donation is given to.

If organisations direct people who are selling their homes to

Comptons, that grant will be doubled to £200 on completion.

People can also make personal donations to any of fifty

organisations now members of Comptons Charitable

Fund and can call Comptons Property Agents on

01778 343 417 for further details.

If you are looking for an intimate, personalised service with a customised treatment, then Essence of Beauty is exactly where you should go.

They specialise in the Darphin range of beauty treatments that have products to suit younger clients to the more mature and all skin types in between. This ensures the right treatment for each individual. The Darphin range is made from plant extracts and has many anti-aging, hydrating and reviving qualities.

Charlotte and I went along to meet the team and sample the treatments on offer. Being a facial fanatic, I had the 30 minute sensorial revival, pick-me-up facial – and it was superb! From the essential oils to the hot towels, the whole experience did exactly what it said – I felt revived and refreshed – perfect if you only have limited time, however, there are a number of more luxurious 1 hour treatments for total indulgence.

With our busy lives, the lead up to Christmas and the excesses that come with the festivities, the New Year is always seen as a time to start again. This is just as true for our health, fitness and nutrition. Going back to basics is simple, but something we can all forget about.

Exercise } Start slowly • TryahomeDVDworkout, includingalittleresistance. You can build up the resistance as you become stronger.• Useobjectsinthehomeasfreeweightssuchasbottles of water and tins.• Yourcoremusclesaresoimportant, notjustinexercise but also in your day to day health and wellbeing. Coupled with this is posture. Take a check a few times everyday to see how your posture is, whether you’re sitting or standing. • Asimplepieceofhomeexerciseequipmentisagym ball. By using the ball with exercises that require balance, you are engaging more muscles in your workout which means it will be more effective overall. • Littleandoften.Agood20minuteworkout4–5 times a week is more realistic and effective.

Detox There are questions over whether detoxing is effective or beneficial. Our bodies are designed to clean out waste, but as modern diets quite often include processed ingredients and ‘junk’ foods, our bodies have to work so much harder. By maintaining a balanced lifestyle yourself, you shouldn’t feel the need to actively detox. Check the ingredients in the detox solutions available.

Food } Cutting back the simple way• Nevereatanydietfoodproduct.Thesefoodsarefull of chemicals that our body cannot process and are almost certainly lacking in nutrients.• Avoidallstarchycarbohydrates, whitebread, white rice, pasta, cakes and biscuits. These are packed full of sugar and will give you an energy rush followed by a sudden fall in energy levels.• Avoidprocessedfoodsandsauces.Thesecontain high levels of sugar, salt and additives.• Tryhavingatreatdayevery3-4days,butthat doesn’t mean the whole day! • Drinkplentyofwaterandcutbackonsoftdrinks, alcohol, coffee and tea. This will help your digestive system, pick up your energy levels, aid water retention and give your skin a healthy glow.• Stockuponleanproteinliketrimmedmeat, eggs and nuts. Protein fills you up for longer and plays a vital part in muscle formation. Perfect if you are trying to loose weight and gain muscle tone.

NEW YEAR... NEW YOU??!!!HYPNOTHERAPY & HYPNOANALYSISThere are two main forms of hypnotherapy…1. Suggestion Therapy (sometimes called Clinical Hypnotherapy(2. Pure Hypnoanalysis (only practised by IAPH trained therapists)

HEALTH, HAIR & BEAUTY

CLINICAL HYPNOTHERAPYClinical or Suggestion therapy is ‘normal’ hypnotherapy, basically you will be relaxed into a calm, relaxed light hypnotic state where you will be given suggestions that will affect your feelings/behaviour when you are in your normal waking conscious state. This is called Post`Hypnotic Suggestion. The suggestion given will be tailored to the symptoms that you require help with and all suggestions given will be worded in a positive and careful order so that you can attain the best results. This is very effective for smoking cessation, pre-test nerves, driving tests, presentation nerves including interviews, weight control & general anxiety/confidence/motivation amongst others……normally one to three sessions are all that are required.

PURE HYPNOANALYSISI believe that pure analysis is one of the most effective, safest & quickest forms of therapy to reduce the symptoms of anxiety, phobias, depression, eating disorders & other psychological & emotional problems.

Hypno-analysis is a special form of hypnotherapy, helping people to resolve their unconscious anxieties/conflicts and bottled up emotions therefore reducing their symptoms and problems in life. It is a therapeutic technique, whereby

a client is relaxed into hypnosis and using Free Association sets outs to release bottled up emotions/ conflicts & anxieties. Hypnoanalysis usually takes 8-12 weekly sessions lasting approx. 1 hour each.

This is only two forms of the different therapies practised here at peterborough hypnotherapy practice, for further information on these or other therapies offered, or to book a free initial consultation:

The German car, which was revamped recently, has

permanent all-wheel drive with self-locking centre

differential. The luxury SUV’s power is transmitted to all four

wheels with optimum precision and control.

It is a refined and impressively quiet off-roader which is also

capable of great acceleration - it is a Porsche after all! The

latest three-litre V6 Diesel engine offered in the Cayenne now

delivers 242 bhp - 5 bhp more punch than previously via

an eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission, which

includes steering wheel mounted gearshift controls.

Fuel economy has also risen to 39 mpg from 38.2mpg, and

CO2 emissions have dropped six grams to 189 g/km. That is

enough to bump the Cayenne diesel down to a 30 per cent

benefit in kind tax rate, from 32 per cent. In addition, the

power increase has had a positive effect on performance.

For example, the acceleration time from 0-62 mph has been

cut by 0.2 seconds to 7.6 seconds, and top speed is up

2mph to 137mph.

Unsurprisingly, the Cayenne makes a great towing vehicle

and the preparation for an optional tow bar system comes

as standard. For the biggest loads, you can choose from

two towing options: an electrically retractable tow bar unit,

which was fitted to my test vehicle (at a cost of £825), or a

manually detachable tow bar. With the electric version, the

ball neck can be retracted beneath the rear apron – all at the

FOR ANY business, particularly for

those based in the countryside,

Porsche’s latest Cayenne Diesel

is a good alternative to the

predictable Range Rover.

push of a button. Both options have a maximum braked trailer

load of 3,500 kg (with a maximum nose weight of 140 kg)

and come with a 13-pole socket. This makes the car ideal for

anyone with, for example, an equine business. It is absolutely

ideal for lugging a fully laden horse trailer and, with its 4x4

capacity, it is perfect for getting in and out of muddy fields.

Of course, the Porsche doesn’t just come with tow bar options;

it has a lot of others – but they come at a cost. For instance,

the Cayenne I drove had: metallic paint (£697.00), Porsche

communication management including navigation mode

(£2,137.00), black full leather interior package (£2,177.00),

universal audio interface (£227.00), air suspension with

self-levelling ride height adjustment (£2,380.00), Bluetooth

phone capability (£534.00),19-inch Cayenne Design II alloy

wheels, with all season tyres optimised for rolling resistance

(£1,456.00), electric tilt/slide sunroof (£1,004.00), bi-xenon

headlights (£1,165.00), brushed aluminium interior package

(£526.00), roof rails including roof mouldings in aluminium

finish (£590.00) and a heated windscreen (£324.00). Phew!

Along with the electric tow bar fitting that pushed my Cayenne

Diesel’s price tag to a whopping £60,380.00!

Option-packs aside, Porsche says that the basic Cayenne

Diesel is confirmation that a 100-metre sprinter can also

run a marathon. To be honest I would agree, because that

statement pretty much encapsulates the oil-burning model’s

attraction – it is a tremendously sporty car to drive, but it

is also very practical and delivers decent fuel economy for

everyday use.

Twolocalbrotherslaunchvoucherwebsitetoboostthelocaleconomy

My Local Vouchers is a website designed to increase the number of local people using local businesses again. The way in which we aim to do this is by creating a website which allows these smaller, local businesses to offer vouchers i.e. ‘20% off when you spend over £30’ which then encourages locals to shop locally. For local customers, they will be saving money with these vouchers so we see it as a mutually beneficial set up between the business and customer.

Brothers Sean (22) and Lee Ruane (20), inspired by other more famous voucher offering websites, noticed that these websites contained more “national” orientated businesses. They felt that a website focusing on local, smaller businesses would be a great way of giving local people an incentive to begin using their local businesses again – the way it used to be.

“We started this website as there is not another website offering this.” Explains Lee, “this is an easy way of finding deals and vouchers local to you. It benefits both the customers to save them money during this recession and should also give the local economy a boost by getting people to spend their money with local businesses.” Lee added

“We are two young entrepreneurs that want to try and put an end to shops being boarded up. We want to recreate the feeling of community amongst communities – sounds obvious, but unfortunately, we feel that it’s becoming a thing of the past.”

£Single parents offered discounted willsSINGLE parents are among the group of people for whom a Will is most

important, sadly they are one of the groups who are the least likely to have

this planning in place. A new national initiative that offers the opportunity for

single parents to have a will written to protect their children’s future is being

headed locally by Will and Probate Services.

The Society of Will Writers, through its participating members, is offering single parents throughout the UK a chance to have their will written at a greatly reduced cost in the hope it will make them think about their children’s future and ensure, should anything happen to them, their children’s’ welfare is assured and that they would be entrusted to the person that they want to care for them, instead of leaving it to chance.

SWW Director General, Brian McMillan, said: “As parents with young children most of us never think about dying but sadly not all parents live long enough to see their children grow up. For single parents

particularly, a will is the most important thing you can do for your children to ensure that guardianship and trusts are put in place should the unthinkable happen before your child is 18.

Throughout the month of January, Will and Probate Services will be offering to write a single parent’s will for a fixed fee of £35 plus VAT regardless of circumstances.

For further information about this initiative and to make an appointment, give Will and Probate Services a call on 01778 341490.
