In 1850 this three storey stone house was found derelict

and decayed by the new purchaser – the Revd William

Strong (of Longthorpe Tower) - who bought Thorpe Hall

estate from Earl Fitzwilliam of neighbouring Milton

Hall. However, Strong’s alterations and renewal in the

Italian style didn’t detract from its original Cromwellian

mansion design by John Webb (nephew of architect

Inigo Jones). The building dates back to Oliver St John

(b.1598; d.1673), a Lord Chief Justice who supported

Parliament in the Civil War, and who bought in 1653 the

freehold on an area of Longthorpe – some 26 hectares.

Oliver St John had Thorpe Hall built from 1650 onwards

out of the ruins of Peterborough Cathedral’s Bishop’s

Palace and cloister, plus stone from Barnack quarries.

Thorpe Hall was finally completed in 1656 by the

builder Peter Mills.

The mid-17th century architect, John Webb (b.1611;

d.1672), went to great pains to vary both the design and the

material of Thorpe Hall. Together with local stone he used

various types of marble. The carpentry is also exquisite with

scrolls ending the architraves and 5 panelled oak doors

featuring abundant swags and scrolls. Although the dining

room is less than 20 feet square it is filled with moulded

fruit swags – both on the ceiling and on the oak wall panels

and doors. The adornments are breathtakingly beautiful.

Students of John Webb said that he demonstrated “a pretty

play of natural fancy” when he designed Thorpe Hall. They

said: “ Webb relied on his eye, on his sense of balance and

fitness, and gave us a building very full of incident and

ornament but not so much as to be restless, overwhelming

or too busy”.

The Garde 1 listed house sits in five to six acres of garden

and outbuildings and is enclosed by an ashlar wall. In

the mid-19th century the Revd William Strong extended

the walled garden to the west to create a large kitchen

garden and he also added two new lodges. There were two

entrance courts – one by road to the north and the other a

water access to the south from the River Nene. Pairs of lead

falcons used to adorn both sets of gates.

On the death of Revd William Strong the seat of Thorpe Hall

was passed to his elder son Lieutenant Colonel Charles

Isham Strong (b. 1838; d.1914). Upon Charles’ death his

elder son Brigadier-General Strong took over the running

of Thorpe Hall from 1914 until 1927 when it was acquired

by the Meaker family. They undertook modifications to the

gardens and replaced many of the rose beds, plus other

garden plants and shrubs, which had decayed over time.

The Garde II listed gardens were fully restored in 1989 and

they retain the old urns and gates but the planting is post-

1990.

From 1943 to 1970 Thorpe Hall was used as a Maternity

Hospital and from 1986 it was acquired by the Sue Ryder

Foundation and opened in May 1991 as a hospice, and

remains so today.

In November 2011, the Sue Ryder Foundation, Thorpe

Hall, was given full planning permission by Peterborough

City Council and English Heritage to build a new state-of-

the-art single storey hospice within the existing grounds. It

will offer 20 single en-suite bedrooms within a landscaped

garden that will be fully accessible to patients and relatives.

It will mean alterations to the west wing and hall with

associated landscaping works to the northwest garden and

west courtyard. This new building is designed to be eco-

friendly and energy efficient, providing the best palliative

care for people in the area.

Thorpe Hall can be hired for weddings and the gardens are

open to the public all year round.

1. Few people know about your impressive acting career, including Cats, The Rocky Horror Show and, more recently, Grease. How does choreographing an ice show and performing on the West End compare to each other?Well, you can’t fall over and slide for 20ft on stage, but you can hit the wrong note! I love every aspect of show’s whether on ice or on stage. Lighting, sound, set design, costumes everything that comes together to allow the performers to do their job. I like the immediacy of being on stage and working with an ensemble cast is great after spending most of my time on the ice in solitude.

2. What career path could you have imagined taking if you hadn’t become a skater and actor?I would have started the musical theatre career earlier as I wanted to be Gene Kelly when I was growing up!

3. So 2012 is a huge year for sport, with the Olympics grabbing so many headlines already. Can you tell us more about your role as a team GB Ambassador. As Ambassadors we are hoping to help make the experience for all the competitors of Team GB the best it can possibly be. There is no manual or book that tells you how it will feel to be a part of the greatest sporting event in the world.

The City Scene interview Robin Cousins

4. Where did your inspiration come from for the Tropicana Show theme?I co-created a TV series for NBC TV in the States and one of the shows was a tribute to Barry Manilow. He was so gracious about me using his music and is a skating fan so the marriage was a good one.

5. What’s new for Holiday on Ice for 2012 which will excite the audience?I have created 10 shows for HOI so I found myself bringing the best ideas and experience from all those shows to Tropicana. And in one instance I have been able to move HOI into an area it has never gone before (the LED wall) which has exceeded my expectations… I am very proud of it.

With a cast of over 40 world class skaters seamlessly gliding through smouldering boleros, sultry Latin rhythms, Big Band and high-octane Rock ‘n’ Roll, this show simply exudes Passion. Created and choreographed by Olympic champion Robin Cousins MBE, TROPICANA celebrates love and life: with extravagant costumes, passionate dances and non-stop music, making this one of the most thrilling ice spectaculars you will ever see. With an original musical score, TROPICANA also features interpretations of some of the best loved songs from world-renowned songwriter Barry Manilow.

IPHONE HEALTH WALKPatients at Peterborough City Hospital

will soon be able to enjoy a new

interactive health walk produced

for the ‘Walk Peterborough’ iPhone

app. The free app, developed

by green charity Peterborough

Environment City Trust (PECT),

is being updated with a new

walk around the hospital site, following funding from

Peterborough City Council’s Travelchoice project.

Bretton residents and hospital staff helped PECT design the

one and a half mile health walk, which starts at Peterborough

City Hospital, and passes through local sites of interest and a

small woodland area.

Patients and visitors are being encouraged to take a break

from the hospital wards and grab a breath of fresh air, whilst

hospital staff can also stretch their legs during lunch break.

The walk is also intended for residents to enjoy and is available

for free to download from the iTunes App Store.

The app already features guided walks through Lynch Wood,

Stanground, Hampton and Woodston. There are various health

walks available aimed at improving fitness and a number

of nature walks designed to encourage learning about local

wildlife and history. The new walk includes both interesting

local knowledge and tips on walking for health, offering

something for everyone.

The Walk Peterborough iPhone App has received 1,145

downloads since its launch in 2010, and has a 4.5 star rating

on the App store.

A bid to open one of the country’s first special schools

via the Free School route in Peterborough has been

approved by the Department for Education.

Greenwood Dale Foundation Trust put together a bid

with Peterborough City Council’s Children’s Services

to open a new special school on the same site as the

recently-approved City of Peterborough Academy on

Reeves Way, Eastfield, Peterborough. It is one of only

three Free School special schools approved nationally by

the Department for Education.

The academy will cater for 90 pupils aged four to 18

years, the majority of whom will be children with autism.

It will share the same site as the City of Peterborough

Academy which will also be run by Greenwood Dale

Foundation Trust. It is expected the special school will

The chairman of a local charity group chose the 15th

anniversary celebrations to announce the total raised

has topped half a million pounds. The news came

during Chris Collier’s speech to more than 200 guests

at the NSPCC Peterborough Business Support Group’s

Gala Dinner with Penny Smith.

As well as being a night of celebration, the event, held

at Peterborough Marriott Hotel, helped boost the group’s

fundraising total by a further £14,000, thanks to the

generosity of guests.

The Gala event was organised to celebrate 15 years of

the group raising money to help vulnerable children in the

Greater Peterborough area. The evening included a charity

auction, raffle, a draw for a Mulberry handbag, an after

dinner speech by special guest former Evening Telegraph

reporter and GMTV presenter Penny Smith, and a tribute to

Chris Collier and his dedicated committee members.

60 MINUTES. 600 CALORIES. ONE FABULOUS DANCE FLOOR.

After moving back to Peterborough I needed something to get me out of the house, so I decided to try Jazzercise. I can honestly say that was one of the best decisions I ever made! The other students were so friendly. I used to go with my Mum and we both made lots of friends, after a while I was approached by Steph Harris the class instructor, if I would like to become an instructor myself. Being a single Mum it was perfect; a Job doing what I love as well as keeping me fit. That was back in 2005. The instructor training is full on and you have to learn about all aspects of health and fitness, plus we are all kept on our toes by regular evaluations, so you can be assured that your Jazzercise Instructor will give you the best workout they can!

It’s always great for us as Instructors to here that our students have really felt our routines working for them, and when they achieve there goal be it weight orientated to change their body shape or introduce some excercise into their life style.

Jazzercise is a great way to burn up to 600 calories in one fun and powerfully effective 60 minute total body workout. Every Jazzercise class combines dance-based cardio with strength training and stretching to sculpt, tone and lengthen muscles for maximum fat burn. Choreographed to today’s hottest music, Jazzercise is a fusion of Jazz dance, resistance training, Pilates, Yoga and Kickboxing. Jazzercise is more than an exercise class, it’s a fun and friendly place for people of all ages to enjoy 60 minutes of good music with friends and to burn 600 calories at the same time.

Body Intelligence Training with Sally Carmichael at Barnsdale Lodge

Your mind and body are in cahoots. What you

think affects how your body behaves and what

you do with your body affects how you think.

Now this might sound a bit ‘out there’ however,

Sally Carmichael has 20 years experience in the

field of movement education, and trains with the

best.

“I have integrated existing movement disciplines

and somatic methods to evolve what is known as

Body Intelligence.” Explains Sally.

Sally helps to develop people’s awareness of the

connection between thinking, feeling and moving.

This awareness is the body’s own intelligence

guidance system that has to be trained, just like

a muscle so that we can use it effectively. She

uses bodymapping, movement techniques from

eastern and western technologies, psychology

and somatics to help individuals develop their

own body’s intelligence.

Barnsdale Lodge are offering a two day retreat

so that you can discover how these amazing

techniques can help to improve your skills

development for any sport, injury rehabilitation

and/or creative performance. You will have a

complete body check to map your weaknesses

and strengths and workshops throughout the 2

days that will help you to link how you think and

feel to how you move.

If you would like to be in touch with your own

body and realise how you feel, then you will find

Sally a very interesting person. Sally has a very

open view and will teach you as an individual to

expose your potential.

Garden SceneBy Joseph Whitehead www.gardenwiseadvice.com

In the grips of winter the garden can seem a most forbidding place, but with a keen eye we can see the garden start to stir. Snowdrops and Aconites reaching skywards, Hellebore buds swelling ready to burst, the sweet scent of Which Hazel and Christmas box - earth to turn, beds to mulch, plenty to do and keep us warm.

Happy New Year and happy gardening for 2012!

Garden skills- Tree plantingI think there is nothing more satisfying and soothing for the soul than planting a tree. From the giant English Oak to the dainty Mountain Ash, to watch a tree you planted grow, mature and thrive is just a magical experience. But as when sowing seeds it’s vital to give your tree the best start in life so correct planting is vital.

1. The planting hole - square shallow hole. Unless the soil is particularly impoverished don’t add any additional organic matter to the hole as this will help to create a sump for water to drain into which will cause root damage and encourage water borne infections.2. Planting depth; This is vital, the trunk flares out towards its base just above where the roots are found, this is the depth to plant bringing the soil level just above the roots so as not to cover the root flare. Check that the tree is straight. 3. After care; Add a handful of blood, fish and bone in spring. 4. Staking; A stake is only there to hold the root ball in the ground until its roots grow out, a healthy tree that is enjoying its situation should only need a stake for 1½ - 2 years.

Five great garden trees1. Malus ‘Golden Hornet’2. Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’3. Prunus x subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’4. Acer griseum5. Betula utilis var.jacquemontii

Over 80% of garages are used as a dumping ground and to store/hoard all of your unwanted items.

Convertyourgarage.com have cleared out many garages to prepare for conversion and have found items such as children’s cots and push chairs (and the youngest child is now 18!) as well as old wicker furniture, boxes of clutter and numerous objects of useless paraphernalia.

We also came across boxes of sentimental items from school reports, to first dolls and teddy bears to a life’s collection of LP’s (yes those large black discs we used to play). At convertyourgarage.com we understand the that you want to keep these safe, so, for all of those more valuable things, we supply and erect an 8 x 6 timber shed with every conversion we do.

So if you are looking for extra space to spread out, another room for privacy to enjoy your reading or music in peace, or even a bedroom for your teenager or guests, then a garage conversion is the quickest, simplest way of transforming your wasted space into a useful room! Plus adding value to your home at the same time.

Footprints Westgate Peterborough name change to North Shoes

IT has a new name – but it’s business as usual at a city

shoe store.

Footprints at 10 Westgate will be known as North Shoes

to reflect the fact that it is no longer just a children’s and

ladies’ shoe store, but now offers men’s footwear, too.

Customers can be assured of the same level of expertise

and customer service that the store has become renowned

for, with manageress Rosemary Gray - who has worked

in the premises since they became a shoe store in 1987

- still at the helm. Bourne-based family shoe firm North

Shoes took over Footprints in 2009. The company has been

running for 135 years and has built a solid reputation as

fitting specialists.

On the shelves, you’ll still find children’s brands by Ricosta,

Start-rite, Geox, Primigi, Lelli Kelly, Kickers, Converse,

Fitflop and Petasil and ladies’ footwear by Reiker , Ecco,

Hotter, Van Dal , Easy B, Converse, Fitflop, Padders,

Zodiaco, Remonte and Waldlaufer. But they’ve now been

joined by men’s brands Rieker, Anatomic, Easy B & Loake.

The store is still open from 9am-5pm Monday to Saturday,

and from 11am-3pm on Sundays.

Ryan’s Football Preview

Man City V Tottenham Hotspur, (22nd)Both these sides will be desperate to show their title credentials in the new year & prove they have sides capable of going the whole distance in pursuit of Premier league glory. In 2010 this fixture was a straight shootout to decide which side made the following season’s Champions League & the North Londoners came out on top. This time the blue side of Manchester will fancy a much different outcome. Having said that Harry Redknapp’s Spurs have shown great consistency after their initial poor start and with the squad brimming full of confidence truly believes they can go beyond a 4th place finish. Roberto Mancini although never admitting it may feel that going out of the Champions League in the group stages may end up having a positive effect on their hunt for domestic honours. With the squad assembled I firmly believe City have a massive chance of capturing the league championship for the first time in almost 45 years. This is why despite Tottenham’s ability to beat anyone on their day; I’m going for a Man City victory.

Arsenal V Man United, (22nd)Let us all go back to August 28th , Manchester United were flying high at the top of the league, new players were showing themselves to be fantastic acquisitions and home grown products like Danny Welbeck & Tom Cleverley were taking their chance to impress with both hands. Arsenal on the other hand had just lost arguably their best two players in Samir Nasri & Cesc Fabregas not to mention the injury to Jack Wilshire meaning Arsene Wengers squad was thin on the ground at best. Regardless the football world was stunned when a mixture of great attacking flair and comical defending led to an incredible 8-2 scoreline in Uniteds favour. Since then fortunes have turned. It would be very harsh to say the wheels have come off at Old Trafford but a 6-1 reverse to your city rivals & an early exit in the Champions League for only the 2nd time in over 15 years wouldn’t exactly be what Sir Alex Ferguson would have wished for. Arsenal though have shown their made of stern stuff and with qualification as group winners in Europe and an unbeaten record since early Oct, (at the time of writing) in the Premier League, early doubters aren’t quite crowing from the rooftops anymore! This game is a tough one to call, expect fireworks!
