Supporting our communities:

Lending a hand for Alberta flood reliefOn June 20, heavy rain drenched southern

Alberta resulting in severe flooding in

many areas in and around Calgary. More

than 100,000 Albertans, including TELUS

customers and team members were

evacuated from their homes.

Committed to our give where we live

philosophy, many members of our TELUS

team stepped up to support relief efforts for

one of Canada’s worst natural disasters.

The Customer Solutions Delivery team

worked around the clock across southern

Alberta to maintain service for our customers,

equipment and buildings.

Always quick to lend a hand, our TELUS

Community Ambassadors mobilized to

assemble and distribute 1,200 Comfort Kits

to families staying in community centres as a

result of flooding or evacuation orders.

Here are some of the many other things our

TELUS family did to help our neighbours in

the flood ravaged regions:

■■ Provided blankets and mobile phone

chargers in Calgary, Okotoks, High River

and Medicine Hat;

■■ Facilitated a text-to-donate campaign for

the Canadian Red Cross;

■■ Teamed up with the Calgary Food

Bank to launch the TELUS Calgary

Food Drive for Flood Relief, an in-store

food collection campaign to help stock

empty shelves;

■■ Enabled team members looking for ways

to contribute to flood relief efforts to use

their Bravo points for contribution;

■■ Encouraged team members across

the country to donate blood during

this increased time of need in

southern Alberta;

■■ Provided counselling support to team

members affected by the floods;

■■ Offered free phone calls through TELUS

payphones in affected areas; and

■■ Ensured customers in affected areas

were not charged for local and long

distance calling or text messaging

beyond their regular plans for the

duration of the emergency.

In addition to our immediate response, our

CEO, Darren Entwistle, announced our

funding of a series of important Alberta flood

recovery projects that will have a lasting and

meaningful impact for those hit hardest by

the flooding. These projects include:

■■ Providing camping gear for the

High River Scouts, so more than 50

youth, who lost their equipment in

the flood, could attend the Canadian

Scout Jamboree this year in

Sylvan Lake, Alberta;

■■ Ensuring the Bridgeland Crisis Nursery

was able to open their doors to families

requiring childcare while coping with the

aftermath of the devastating flood; and

■■ Helping Inn from the Cold provide

temporary housing, food and clothing for

families displaced from their homes.

As part of our company’s contribution,

TELUS also provided a further $250,000

to local flood recovery efforts through

our TELUS Calgary Community Board

and TELUS Community Action Teams in

Alberta, bringing our total contribution in the

immediate aftermath to $2 million.

Thank you to our many team members and

retirees who exemplified spirited teamwork

and responded so quickly to support our

fellow team members, our customers and our

communities throughout southern Alberta.

We embrace change and initiate opportunity

Celebrating excellence:

Six more TELUS Community Ambassadors become Legends

The TELUS Legend Award recognizes inspiring

current and former team members, with 20

or more years of service, who have played an

integral role in building our TELUS legacy. The

award is a celebration of a lifetime of contribution

and the highest recognition possible at TELUS.

Considering their dedication to our communities,

it isn’t a surprise that so many TELUS Legends

are also Community Ambassadors.

During the first half of 2013, six more Community

Ambassadors were added to the prestigious list

of TELUS Legends:

■■ Donna Abram, Fraser Valley

■■ Pat Bauer, Kamloops

■■ Butch Foster, Edmonton

■■ Ingrid Koch, Southern Alberta

■■ Dona Miller, Okanagan

■■ John Vandenborn, Edmonton

“TELUS Legends are highly regarded for their

contributions to building our company’s legacy

and shaping our growth strategy and brand

promise — the future is friendly — for the benefit

of our customers, communities, team members

and shareholders,” says TELUS CEO Darren

Entwistle.

In recognition of their contributions, each of these

deserving Community Ambassadors will receive:

■■ A congratulatory letter and gift for themselves

and their family

■■ A framed certificate, a professional

photo memento and an exclusive

commemorative coin

■■ A $500 donation on their behalf to a

local charity

■■ Entrance into a virtual and physical

Stepping up for a cure:

TELUS Walk to Cure DiabetesEvery step counts in our efforts to improve

the health of thousands of Canadians. That’s

why TELUS is proud to be the title sponsor of

the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s

(JDRF) flagship fundraising event.

This year, more than 4,000 team members,

retirees, friends and family participated in the

TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes held in more

than 70 Canadian communities. Together, we

raised more than $500,000 to support those

living with diabetes.

The walk has special meaning for Michael

Dittrich, a TELUS team member in Burnaby.

Michael has two sons with type 1 diabetes,

something quite rare.

He says that, when he and his family learned

about the JDRF community, they suddenly

felt not so alone. They discovered the

progress that has already been made in

battling diabetes and the very real possibility

that it is curable.

Participating in the TELUS Walk to Cure

Diabetes is how Michael and his family give

where they live. Although Michael sometimes

feels helpless that he can’t do more to alleviate

his sons’ illness, the TELUS Walk makes him

feel he’s contributing directly to the fight.

“When we get to walk day and we’re

surrounded by thousands of supporters and

members of the TELUS family it’s a fantastic

feeling,” says Michael.

“It’s a feeling where we understand this is a

day for our children, and the hundreds of

thousands of others impacted by the disease,

and where we realize that we are all united in

a cause, and that’s to find a cure.”

Since 2000, TELUS, our team members and

retirees have donated more than $7 million

to fund research that will help find a cure for

type 1 diabetes.

TELUS two-for-one stock split completed

On April 16, TELUS completed the two-for-one

stock split of our company’s common shares.

Each TELUS shareholder of record as of April

15, 2013, received one additional share for

each share owned. The newly issued common

shares began trading on the Toronto Stock

Exchange and New York Stock Exchange at

the start of business on April 17.

“TELUS’ stock split builds upon a number

of shareholder friendly initiatives we have

undertaken in recent years, including our

exchange of non-voting shares for voting

shares to create a single share class and our

three-year, 10 per cent per annum dividend

growth model. By enhancing the liquidity and

affordability of our shares for investors, we

are striving to create value for the millions

of Canadians who own TELUS shares as

retail investors or through their mutual or

retirement funds,” said Darren Entwistle,

TELUS president and CEO.

TELUS shareholders, with or without a

physical share certificate, did not need to

take any action, as the company moved to

a simple Direct Registration System (DRS).

TELUS’ transfer agent, Computershare, sent

registered common shareholders a DRS

advice form, which represents the additional

number of common shares they received

as a result of the stock split. This allowed

shareholders to hold their additional common

shares in a “book entry” form without having

a physical share certificate issued.

Similarly, no action was required by those

who hold shares through the TELUS

employee share plan or hold restricted

stock units, performance stock units and/

or options. Share balances and prices in

these employee plan accounts have been

automatically adjusted.

Atlantic Canada

TELUS Day of Giving was a huge success for our

Community Ambassadors club volunteers as well as

their families and friends in Atlantic Canada. Across

the three provinces we support, we participated

in more than 10 separate events, including:

■■ work in our local SPCAs;

■■ ribbon-making for breast cancer awareness;

■■ local park and beach clean-ups;

■■ two major telethons at the IWK and Janeway

Hospitals; and

■■ gardening at the Canadian National Institute

for the Blind in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Feedback from participants and organizations alike

was tremendous — everyone felt very fortunate

to have the opportunity to lend a helping hand.

Upcoming events for our club include: the

Sunsplash Paddle in Paradise in St. John’s,

Newfoundland — a dragon boat race with all

proceeds supporting breast cancer awareness

and research — where our local volunteers

are looking forward to fundraising and getting

involved to make a difference!

Autumn brings us a new adventure as we

work to help support our Headstart Program in

Moncton, New Brunswick — we are coordinating

a fun weekend of events, including a BBQ and

collecting donations to help support their Coats

for Kids program.

Barrie

The Barrie Community Ambassadors started off

spring with a book sale to help local kids with

learning disabilities. Team members donated

and bought used books, raising funds for the

Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario,

Simcoe County. The book sale is running year

round and has raised close to $250 so far.

The club joined the fight against cancer and

sold bunches of daffodils to raise money for the

Canadian Cancer society. Tammy Deschambault

led the event, which raised $520!

Barrie’s male team members dressed in drag for

a great cause! People donated cash to see Steve

Hicks and Lou Vallier walk around the office in

ball gowns, makeup and wigs. It was a fun event

that generated lots of laughs and $500 for the

Grocery Assistance Program.

The club also took part in Prom Blitz. Close to

forty gently used prom dresses, as well as shoes

and accessories, were donated to less fortunate

girls so they could look beautiful at prom.

Bake for the Cure was a big hit! The event

featured a bake sale of pink-decorated treats

and a raffle of cool prizes, including a Samsung

smartphone. Over $1,700 was raised for breast

cancer research.

Club executive member Carley Brandon hosted a

garage sale for Habitat for Humanity. She raised

$300 to support building projects in Orillia and

Lake Country.

Barrie team members raised money for Youth

Haven shelter with a dodgeball tournament! Over

$2,000 was raised to support the shelter, which

houses homeless teens and youth.

The club is pleased to announce that Ryan

Patterson and Matthew Sturrock are joining the

executive team for a one-year developmental

opportunity. Ryan and Matthew bring an

impressive history of volunteerism in the Barrie

community. Welcome, Ryan and Matt!

Calgary

Calgary Community Ambassadors have been

busy over the past months volunteering at

various events and working on special projects.

On April 8 and 9, two members of our

Ambassadors Executive attended a two-day

convention in Toronto. The meetings were

well organized and informative, and both

came back with new ideas and information.

Community Ambassadors club updates

Atlantic Canada Community Ambassadors spent TELUS Day of Giving gardening at the Canadian National Institute for the Blind in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Barrie Community Ambassadors taking part in the Heart & Stroke Foundation’s Big Bike ride.

Calgary Community Ambassadors assembled more than 1,000 Kits for Kids for local disadvantaged children.

The Volunteer of the Year award was given to

Shirley Williams. Congratulations!

This year, we made and distributed 120 Easter

baskets to transitional homes and the Kerby

Senior Abuse Centre.

We are very proud of our Sensory Apron

project, which we began in 2010. To date we

have made more than 430 aprons, which are

distributed to Alzheimer’s patients in Calgary and

surrounding areas.

On May 10, five members volunteered at the

registration desk for the Annual Mother’s Day Run.

As part of TELUS Day of Giving, 28 Ambassadors

filled 1,020 Kits for Kids. These were distributed

to school boards in Calgary, Airdrie, Strathmore,

High River and Medicine Hat.

The TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes was held

June 9 — it was a perfect weather day for the

volunteers and walkers in beautiful Stanley Park.

On June 11, 12 volunteers helped prepare

and serve 567 meals at the Mustard Seed.

On June 21, Calgary experienced severe

flooding in many areas of the city, which

caused homes to be evacuated and left

many roads destroyed. Several Calgary

Ambassadors quickly assembled 100

Comfort Kits for distribution to those in

need. Ambassadors from Vancouver and

Edmonton also provided Comfort Kits and

many team members ventured out to the

flooded areas to help the flood victims. June

2013 is a month we will certainly never

forget!

When you volunteer it means you give

yourself without any regression, without

condition, but with full devotion.

Page 5TELUS Community Ambassadors – Community Corner

Edmonton

It has been a busy year for the Edmonton

Community Ambassadors. We have been busy

with the usual projects — Heart and Lung

Pillows, Computers for Schools, woodworking

shop and the Partners with their knitting and

Afghan making.

The woodworking shop built large wooden

games for the Crystal Kids fundraiser and a

wishing well for Ronald McDonald House.

For TELUS Day of Giving, the Edmonton group

tied pink ribbons for the Canadian Cancer

Society and helped with the registrations for the

TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes.

The biggest challenge we faced recently was

the major flooding in Alberta. First, when Fort

McMurray experienced flooding, the Edmonton

Ambassadors bought, sorted, packed and

shipped Comfort Kits within 24 hours. Then,

Calgary and southern Alberta were hit with the

worst flooding in the history of the province.

Again, the Edmonton group rallied and packed

Comfort Kits, which were sent south to help with

the large number of affected families. We would

like to thank the Vancouver TELUS Community

Ambassadors for assisting with Comfort Kits for

the flood victims.

This fall we will be busy with various ongoing

projects, such as the Zebra Society, Salvation

Army, Basically Babies, Bissell Centre, and

the annual TELUS Retirees Golf Tournament,

which raises much-needed items for the

local food bank. The Edmonton Community

Ambassadors will once again purchase books

for schools in the Edmonton area, as well as

reading and delivering the books during Raise a

Reader Week.

Community Ambassadors club updates

by the New Westminster Lions Club: a guest

speaker discussed etiquette for the sighted

around the low vision/blind;

■■ Serving seniors at Food & Friends:

sponsored by Langley Meals on Wheels

twice a month;

■■ Working at Canadian Food for Children weekly;

■■ Fundraisers for Eagle Ridge Hospital

Foundation: including ‘Wheels to Heal’ and a

golf tournament with Ball Drop;

■■ Canuck Place golf tournament fundraiser;

■■ ‘Night Shift’ golf tournament: fundraiser for

feeding the homeless 365 days in the year;

■■ TELUS Day of Giving at Royal Kwantlen Park:

clean up, washing, scraping and painting;

■■ TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes in Abbotsford

and a golf tournament at Northview Golf &

Country Club;

■■ Muscular Dystrophy Walk in

Bear Creek Park, Surrey; and

■■ On-going book sales, food bank donations,

blankets), along with sewing cancer hats,

and local area community volunteering.

Our book sale is held once a month at the Brian

Canfield Centre on the 6 floor. If you would

like to donate books, please contact Marion at

604-594-8205 for pick-up, or drop off at the

Brian Canfield Centre 6 floor lounge.

We are always looking for yarn and fabric. To

donate your leftover supplies, call Linda at

604-461-9892. Thanks to those who have

already donated.

The Fraser Valley Club meets on the fourth

Tuesday of the month at the Centennial Centre in

New Westminster near the Canada Games Pool.

You are welcome to join us and meet new and

old friends.

We hope to see all Ambassadors attend and

renew friendships.

Central Island

During the first half of this year, our Central Island

Community Ambassadors were busy giving back.

More than 200 baby and children’s hats were

knitted by a couple of very busy volunteers. Many of

these were included in the 35 baby bags distributed

to the maternity ward of the Port Alberni Hospital.

The rest of the hats are destined for Nanaimo’s

Haven House and various elementary schools in the

area and will be given out this fall.

For TELUS Day of Giving, a group of volunteers

worked as lane timers and officials at the Riptides

Sprint Challenge swim meet held over the

weekend of May 25. We also sponsored, served

dinner and gave out 200 Comfort Kits at our local

Salvation Army kitchen. A fun time was had by all

who volunteered!

With money raised from the sale of an old piece

of equipment, we were able to purchase two

special round dining tables for the Salvation Army.

More than 200 Kits for Kids crammed with school

supplies were given out in our area:

■■ 100 backpacks to Port Alberni schools

■■ 90 backpacks to Georgia View and 40

backpacks to Bayview schools in Nanaimo

Our Christmas lunch will be held on Thursday,

December 5 at the newly rebuilt Nanaimo Golf

and Country Club. Please see the events section

for details.

South Island

The South Island Community Ambassadors

club volunteers have been very busy these past

few months.

This year we are fundraising to help Santas

Anonymous in conjunction with the Victoria

HarbourCats baseball team.

In February, we distributed Comfort Kits at the

Central Baptist Church.

This past spring, we volunteered at numerous

events and organizations, including: Pink in the

Rink, TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes, TELUS Day

of Giving, Broadmead Lodge Golf Tournament,

Oak Bay Marathon, Lakehill Softball, Victoria

HarbourCats and Women in Need.

We continue to support Victoria General

Hospital’s maternity ward by making baby bags

and filling them with necessities, as well as

making handcrafted blankets, sweaters and hats.

In May, a few volunteers helped the Royal

Canadian Legion #91 with their chip wagon at the

Luxton Fair — reports were it was a lot of fun!

We also held a summer social in July, which

everyone always looks forward to.

to support Interior Heath with Baby Bags and

homemade items for mothers at-risk. Our major

project for TELUS Day of Giving was providing

and planting flowers and plants at the Kamloops

Hospice. The gardens help provide a tranquil place

in difficult times. The Ambassadors volunteered

more than 200 hours at TELUS Day of Giving.

We distributed $45,410.96 from the Team TELUS

Charitable Giving campaign to eight local charities.

Our sewing club meets once a month on the first

Tuesday of every month at the TELUS building on

Prince George Community Ambassadors held a barbeque to celebrate the many volunteers who participated in TELUS Day of Giving.

Prince George

TELUS Day of Giving was widely successful

in Prince George where many Community

Ambassadors took part in activities including

caring for the community by serving

breakfast at St. Vincent de Paul’s, cleaning

up a Prince George roadway, helping out and

cleaning at the SPCA, spring cleaning at the

Elder Citizens Recreation Centre and even

travelling to Quesnel to help out planting in

their community garden.

Of course, we helped out with the always

popular Kits for Kids, and afterwards the

group enjoyed a hamburger and hot dog

barbeque as they relaxed with coworkers,

families and friends.

Ottawa

Many of the Ottawa Executive were very happy to participate in the convention

in Toronto in April where our corporate secretary, Gail Strickland, received the

Volunteer of the Year award at the gala. We were also very pleased when our

president, Terry Wright, was honoured with the Legends of the Year award.

Both Gail and Terry have contributed many hours of their time and energy to

their communities and it was an honour to congratulate them on their well-

deserved efforts.

There have been many volunteer opportunities in 2013 for the Ottawa

Community Ambassadors. In April, we helped at an Ottawa Mission lunch.

In May, we participated at the Youville Centre’s TELUS Day of Giving (TDOG)

painting event. And, in June, there were several events, including:

■■ Another TDOG event where we filled Kits for Kids with school supplies

and Comfort Kits with toiletries;

■■ Sorting shoes for Soles for Souls; and

■■ We also volunteered with Project Sandcastle, Wheels for Wellness

for the Carleton Queensway Carleton Hospital, Starlight Children’s

Foundations Canada, Christie Lake Kids (for children with cancer) and

the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario annual telethon.

This fall, the Ottawa Ambassadors plan to hold a fundraising event and will

participate in “Take a Vet to Dinner” in November — as well as hold our

Annual General Meeting.

East Kootenay

The East Kootenay Community Ambassadors had a very busy first part of

the year.

The week following the TELUS Community Ambassadors Convention

in Toronto, eight of us attended the Volunteer Kootenay Gala at

St. Eugene Resort.

In April, we hosted a volunteer luncheon at our office for volunteer week

and presented our Volunteer of the Year, Ed Thouret, with his award. And,

we hosted our annual Spring Garage Sale, which was very successful.

On May 11, we helped out at the Cranbrook Children’s Festival with several

volunteers out lending a hand.

On June 15, we participated in the Sam Steele Parade and held a

Christmas in June sale at our office. Finally, we held our annual Lawn Dart

Tournament and BBQ on June 23 with a good time being had by all.

Okanagan

For this issue, the Okanagan Community Ambassadors would like to

share an email from one of the many agencies we support. We keep busy

with many meaningful projects and this has been a favourite for more

than 10 years!

From Tory Braun, Wild Festival:

“I just wanted to write you and let you know how wonderful your

volunteers were at the Wild Festival. I was so impressed at how hard

working your ambassadors were and their energy and enthusiasm with

the children was contagious!

“I had feedback from all of the activity leaders saying how great the TELUS

volunteers were, how dedicated they are and how well they worked with

the children. The artist we had this year, Jeannette Angel, was particularly

pleased with the TELUS volunteers at her station. Despite the heat and

physical tasks they did (bending, kneeling) at the art activity, they were

delightful, had wonderful attitudes and really understood and supported

the meaning behind the art projects.

“On a personal note, in all of my volunteer experience, I have never

worked with such a wonderful group. I have made connections with

some of your ambassadors that I know will last well beyond the festival.

Fran Maki in particular was a delight to work with, she organized

everything seamlessly and I really appreciated her knowledge and

expertise throughout this process.

“TELUS has been a wonderful supporter of the Wild Festival. From your

dedicated volunteers, some of them have worked with the festival for

11 years, to the very generous financial support we received, we really

couldn’t make this day happen without TELUS.

“On behalf of the entire Wild Festival team, we wanted to express our

sincerest appreciation for all TELUS has done.”

As part of TELUS Day of Giving West Kootenay Community Ambassadors and team members filled 270 back packs for West Kootenay and Boundary schools.

West Kootenay

Firstly, the West Kootenay Community Ambassadors would like to

congratulate Marge Witton on her TELUS Legends Award and Harvey Craig

on his Volunteer of the Year Award. Way to go!

Speaking of awards, our group was presented with a Nelson City Police

Award for our Comfort Bear program, which now proudly sits on the wall at

TELUS.

For TELUS Day of Giving, team members and Community Ambassadors

collected 200 pounds of food items for our local food bank, filled 270 Kits for

Kids for West Kootenay and Boundary schools and filled a dozen baby bags

for the Nelson Hospital. We even took time to enjoy a pizza lunch together.

On June 1, we held a gigantic garage sale in the parking lot of the Real

Canadian Wholesale Club, raising $815 for Friends of the Family, which

assists families who must travel to large centers to get medical care for

their children. We also raised $300 to start a bursary for a local high school

graduate.

We delivered six sensory aprons to each of our two senior care facilities for

dementia patients, and some of our Community Ambassadors helped the

Lions Club paint playground equipment at our Lions’ park.

In July, our Community Ambassadors undertook all of the Nelson Meals on

Wheels deliveries and in August we assisted with the MS Society’s Bike Ride.

Page 10 Community Corner – TELUS Community Ambassadors

Red Deer

This spring was undoubtedly one of the busiest to

date for the Red Deer Community Ambassadors

who worked on many initiatives, including:

■■ Preparing lunches at the Red Deer Loaves

& Fishes Society for distribution to schools

throughout Red Deer for underprivileged

students.

■■ Volunteering as the clean-up crew after the

Red Deer Hospice Annual Gala which raised

more than $220,000 for the hospice.

■■ Supporting the opening of the Red Deer

Museum and Art Gallery’s Remarkable

Red Deer exhibit on April 14. This

permanent fixture showcases a variety of

accomplishments in Central Alberta over the

past 100 years, including successes related

to technology and telephone service!

■■ Participating in TELUS Day of Giving

by constructing a new playground

for Mountview Elementary School in

coordination with the City of Red Deer and

the Public School Board.

Community Ambassadors club updates

Red Deer Community Ambassadors, TELUS team members, family and friends helped construct a new playground at Mountview Elementary School as part of TELUS Day of Giving.

We have the courage to innovate

■■ Supporting the Canadian Cancer Society

Relay for Life by fundraising more than

$3,000.

■■ Stepping up during the flooding in Alberta,

TELUS team members and Ambassadors

dedicated themselves 24/7 for three days

to protect TELUS infrastructure from rising

water. In addition, Ambassadors delivered

Comfort Kits to evacuation shelters

throughout Calgary.

■■ Packing over 100 Kits for Kids, back packs

filled with school supplies for less fortunate

kids in our rural community schools.

A special thank you to Blaine Ritchie, our club

treasurer, who took the lead on a wonderful

partnership with residents of the Pines Seniors

Lodge whereby our Ambassadors work with

a “crafty” gang of residents to knit slippers

for Ronald McDonald House, mittens for local

underprivileged community members and baby

bonnets for the neo-natal ICU at the Red Deer

Regional Hospital.

It’s been a busy year so far for our Red Deer

Ambassadors group and we look forward to all

that we can accomplish in the fall.

Québec City

The Québec/Beauce Community Ambassadors’

first year as an official club is off to a good

start with 44 members, several activities

and plans for more community outreach and

recruitment this fall.

The spring convention in Toronto gave

members a chance to meet their national

colleagues and learn how to grow their club.

On May 4, a community organization called

Le Carrefour des Enfants de Saint-Malo in

Québec City held their annual wine and cheese

event under the presidency of one of our

TELUS directors, Pierre-Yves Martel. More than

$17,283 was raised for support services for

children, teenagers and adults in need. This

first year of our participation went far beyond

our greatest expectations.

Our Ambassadors were out in full force

for TELUS Day of Giving. Thirteen of our

volunteers supported Le Carrefour des Enfants

de Saint-Malo with spring cleaning (cleaning

windows and housework), painting walls and

basement clean-up. We even helped assemble

a barbecue!

We also filled and donated 170 backpacks as

part of the Kits for Kids program.

If you have ideas of how our club can make

a difference in our community, please reach

out to our club President Jo-Ann Bourque at

jo‑[email protected].

Rimouski

This spring, the Rimouski Community

Ambassadors were thrilled to donate $2,750 to

La Débrouille.

“Every year, we partner with a new local charity

so it can benefit from our fundraising activities,”

says Josée Lévesque, president of the Rimouski

Community Ambassadors.

“Last year, we gave $3,300 to L’ACVA-TCC and

La Lueur de l’Espoir. This year, the Rimouski

Ambassadors chose La Débrouille, a shelter for

women and children who are victims of violence.”

Southern Alberta

The new Southern Alberta Community

Ambassadors club kicked things off with an open

house, the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes and a

fundraising BBQ this spring.

Medicine Hat boasts more hours of sunshine

than most cities in western Canada, allowing year

round greenhouse operations to grow vegetables,

which add to summer crops. Surplus vegetables

are processed by the local Prairie Gleaners,

creating a dehydrated vegetable mix product

that is shipped internationally as a food aid. The

Southern Alberta Community Ambassadors

found it extremely gratifying to support them with

a day of processing veggies. The Prairie Gleaners

distribute over 2 million meals annually and the

Community Ambassadors are committed to

helping them achieve that goal.

Devastating floods in June brought southern

Alberta to a state of emergency. Everyone was

affected in some way and deeply touched by the

work of volunteers and unnamed heroes. The

food bank was overwhelmed with the numbers

of people in need. In a few days, Community

Ambassadors were in position to help with their

Flood Relief Food Bank Challenge. A Saturday

morning blitz was hosted at two CO-OP

grocery stores, including a fun competition

with bragging rights going to the team with

the largest collection. In just two hours, the

Community Ambassadors collected $1,500 and

43 pounds of food. Amazing! As an added bonus,

we saw increased interest in the Community

Ambassadors program and people wanting to

know how they could get involved.

As part of TELUS Day of Giving, the Rimouski

Community Ambassadors organized the third

edition of their garage sale and BBQ to raise

funds for La Débrouille. The garage sale had

close to 1,000 visitors and more than $2,000

was donated to the charity.

Moreover, a sale of raffle tickets amongst TELUS

team members raised $729. 371 tickets were

sold and the winner received a Rimouski Océanic

hockey jersey.

We believe in spirited teamwork

Sunshine Coast

TELUS Day of Giving

Sunshine Coast Community Ambassadors

teamed up with volunteers from the Sunshine

Coast Botanical Garden Society for TELUS Day

of Giving in May. We had a great time digging,

weeding and tending the vegetable garden and

the surrounding area.

The Botanical Garden Society donates more than

1,000 pounds of vegetables to the Sunshine

Coast Food Bank each year, so we were thrilled

to be part of making that happen! In addition to

the vegetable garden, the Sunshine Coast

Botanical Garden is a favourite place amongst

locals for leisurely nature walks and picnics.

We’re looking forward to going back for TELUS

Day of Giving next year.

Kits for Kids

In June, we packed 330 Kits for Kids, which were

delivered to schools along the Sunshine Coast

from Langdale all the way to Powell River.

Packing the Kits has become an annual tradition

where the Community Ambassadors work

together with volunteer members of St.

Bartholomew’s Church in Gibsons. The packing

and delivery is all masterfully coordinated by Sheila

Carlson and the kits are gratefully received by the

schools, as shown in the letter below:

Good morning,

Thank you so much for your very generous

donation of backpacks and school supplies for

our students. Our school population has a

varied socio-economic base and the additional

support for families provided through this

project is much needed and much appreciated.

Thanks again.

■■ Canadian Cancer Society

■■ Arts Umbrella

■■ Muscular Dystrophy Walk

■■ Heart & Stroke Big Bike

■■ Golf tournaments benefitting: Night

The original Ambassadors Dogwood Club

Telephone Pioneers:

This 60-member club in East Vancouver met

every Wednesday where volunteers and

their spouses socialized while crocheting

and knitting crafts to donate to local seniors’

homes and hospitals.

Five years ago, the Dogwood Club merged

with the Vancouver Community Ambassador

Club. Today, they still attend the weekly

Wednesday work/social sessions at the

Brian Canfield Center. Regardless of age,

these members are still actively contributing

as TELUS Community Ambassadors in

their community.

Ruth Gautschi —

mother, grandmother, 80+ years young

On April 24, Burnaby mayor, Derek Corrigan,

presented Ruth with an award for her 30

years of service working with the Citizen

Support Services of Burnaby, which

assists the community with health and

independent living.

Ruth worked at Microtel from 1959 to

1986. From 1986 to 1989 Ruth volunteered

administering hearing tests in schools. Her

next volunteer job at Science World, where

she helped visitors at the information desk,

lasted 22 years. Ruth has volunteered in

the TEE PEE store in the now Brian Canfield

Centre for 20 years, stocking shelves

and as a cashier. Ruth also donates her

time once a week as a buddy shopper for

seniors. When not volunteering Ruth enjoys

line dancing and helping others in any way

she can. Ruth has a great deal of patience

and compassion and the Community

Ambassadors are very fortunate to have her

as one of our members.

the large business category winner for collecting

the most gently used business attire and

accessories. Well done, team!

Toronto East

The Toronto East Community Ambassadors

kicked off our spring season by continuing to

advance the give where we live philosophy.

In an effort to raise money for the Malvern Family

Resource Centre and promote the benefits of

volunteerism, our Ambassadors held a TELUS Day

of Giving breakfast. Team members were treated

to breakfast and encouraged to register for TELUS

Day of Giving. We raised awareness and $160 for

the Malvern Family Resource Centre.

All hands were on deck to give our community’s

youth some confidence and comfort. Almost two

dozen volunteers participated in assembling 200

Comfort Kits for Covenant House Toronto. Pam

Bastedo, the organization’s development officer

extended her gratitude: “Please extend huge

thanks on behalf of our kids to the rest of the

team who helped put the Comfort Kits together.

We really appreciate them.”

We continued to foster our relationship with

Tropicana Community Services Organization by

hosting our Annual Youth Outreach movement as

part of TELUS Day of Giving. At-risk children and

their families had a chance to enjoy a variety of

outdoor games and a pizza lunch.

Our club members were responsible for donating

659 of the 912 items raised at the TELUS Dress

for Success Bay Street Suit Challenge 2013.

Together, we helped disadvantaged men and

women in the community find the confidence they

need to succeed in the working world.

Hearts were racing in June for the Heart & Stroke

Big Bike! TELUS team members raised $5,701

dollars for the cause.

We recognized some exceptional members in a

special ceremony. William Malis, Lucinda Easdale,

Denae Nichols, Krystle Faustino, Julia Palatino,

Christine Klare and Vanessa Balzan were

presented with certificates for going the distance

in promoting volunteerism and organizing TELUS

Day of Giving events for the Client Care frontline.

We closed out the month of June with flavor

when we joined the Mosaic group hosting a

potluck luncheon on Canadian Multiculturalism

Day. The successful event, promoting

multicultural unity within the TELUS community,

featured dishes from more than 20 cultures.

We look forward to continuing our give where we

live mission in 2013! Thank you to the Executive

Committee, our volunteers and TELUS.

Coming to the aid of victims in Lac-Mégantic

On July 6, a train transporting crude

oil derailed, causing explosions and a

major blaze in Lac-Mégantic, Québec.

This tragic accident stunned our team

and our customers across the province.

Committed to helping the communities

in which we operate, especially in times

of crisis, the TELUS team implemented

a series of initiatives to help families in

need in the Lac-Mégantic area:

■■ TELUS Community Ambassadors

distributed 100 Comfort Kits to

families in need and those living in

temporary shelters

■■ Credited all text messages sent by our

customers in Lac-Mégantic on or after

July 6, as well as any local and long

distance overage

■■ Implemented a text-to-donate

campaign in support of the

Canadian Red Cross

Our team also pulled out all the stops to

ensure the continuity of services for our

business and public-sector customers in

the area.
