March 2016 Vol. 59 No. 3 1 COMMODORE’S COMMENTS I feel like it must be Thanksgiving, as I have numerous thanks to deliver. Thanks go to Connie Heyden for planning the Snow Fun Cruise, which started at the Brat Stop, included the Civil War Museum in Kenosha, and ended with a fabulous dinner at the Steak Out, where our group expanded to about thirty members and guests. More thanks go to Connie for volunteering to be Senior Pilot, so that Dave Dorner is freed up to concentrate on being Newsletter Editor. I need to thank Wayne and Lynn Happel for hosting our “Tuesday” Madness at Park Avenue Pizza. Thanks to Wayne, again, for seeking out new clubhouse locations, and spending the afternoon with me to check out the prospects. Thanks to Pete Zierden for hosting our February meeting and for volunteering to store our numerous Milwaukee Boat Club photo albums in his heated mezzanine storage. This has been an interesting term for me. First we lose our Newsletter Editor, Liz, and then we lose our clubhouse --- “what next??” In these situations, I always remind myself, “It could be worse.” These 50 degree days in February make me anxious for warmer weather and to get the boat in the water. Then I am reminded by Russ about the Mother’s Day Storms. Maybe this will be a year without one. Hope you can join us for Monday Madness at the Thirsty Duck being chaired by Dan and Donna Danowski. These always turn out to be enjoyable gatherings. Our meeting for March falls on St. Patrick’s Day. Stay tuned for the location. We are hoping that the Wauwatosa Lion’s Club will come through for us at a reasonable cost. It sure would be great to have a regular meeting place and a spot (hopefully) for our refrigerator and supplies. COMMODORE’S COMMENTS I feel like it must be Thanksgiving, as I have numerous thanks to deliver.

First we lose our Newsletter Editor, Liz, and then we lose our clubhouse --- “what next??” In these situations, I always remind myself, “It could be worse.”

These 50 degree days in February make me anxious for warmer weather and to get the boat in the water.

Commodore Mary Berg

BOATING QUIZ 1. You are on an overnight passage from Port Huron, Michigan to Tobermory, on Ontario's historic Bruce Peninsula. It's after dinner and just beginning to turn dark. One of your guests asks if he can see your sextant. He makes a few adjustments, points to a spot well above the horizon to the north, and says, "The polestar will appear in a few minutes." Does he know what he's doing? 2. What first led geographers and sailors to believe there was such a thing as the Northwest Passage, a northern water route from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans? 3. On a cruise with friends aboard your 44' trawler, you've cruised along in sunshine, but with showers far off on the starboard bow. That evening, over dinner, the rainbow that you all enjoyed is recalled. An argument breaks out about whether the colors in a rainbow always are in the same order, or even the same from top to bottom. What's the answer? 4. You are anchored in 12 feet of water in a nice, small bay, on a calm night. At 2 a.m. the fathometer (depth sounder) alarm, which you set for an eight-foot minimum, suddenly goes off. What do you do? 5. Ten miles off shore, you struck something, five minutes ago, and are taking on water fast. Aboard are your wife and two children, one three years of age, the other a baby. The bunk cushions in the cabin already are awash. A work tug, the only boat in sight, has responded to your call for help. The tugboat captain yells, "Do you want to abandon?" What are the implications of this question? What should you do? (Source: The Cockpit Quiz Book by C Dale Nouse) Gloria Mitchelson

Sno-Fun Cruise 2016 The weather cooperated on Saturday's

MBC Sno-Fun Cruise. There were sunny skies and spring like temperatures that helped make the day very enjoyable.

Fourteen members started out the day at the famous Kenosha Bratstop for a late breakfast or early lunch. A few members chose to try the famous delicious brats there.

Members then went on to the Civil War Museum where six more members joined the group.. Everyone toured the exhibits at their own speed where they were able to learn about the causes and effects of the Civil War and its impact on different regions. It was Civil War Medical Weekend where members were able to watch surgeons and nurses of the 17th Medical Staff demonstrate bullet removal, amputation, and embalming of patients. MBC members Vince Verhasselt and Dave Schneckenberg even volunteered to be patients.

The day concluded with thirty members attending the cocktails and dinner at the SteakOut Restaurant where good conversation was enjoyed by all.

MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF MILWAUKEE BOAT CLUB

FEBRUARY 25, 2016 The February 25, 2016 Milwaukee Boat Club Meeting was called to order by Commodore, Mary Berg, at 7:00 p.m. at the Zierden Company. A motion was carried to approve the minutes as printed in the February Runabouter. Commodore, Mary Berg, reported that we were still seeking a Senior Pilot to replace Dave Dorner, who took over as Editor of the Runabouter. Mary suggested that Connie Heyden take over for the balance of the term. Connie graciously accepted and was given a round of applause. Mary also thanked Connie for the nice job on the Snow Fun Cruise to the Civil War Museum, the Brat Stop and the Steak Out. She also thanked Wayne and Lynn Happel for captaining the event at Park Avenue Pizza, and Pete Zierden for hosting our meeting at his facilities. Vice Commodore- Scott Burke, asked if everyone had the calendar of events for the year. Dave Schneckenberg reported that our former balance was $3,912.04, and that the present balance, after payment of expenses for the picnic and Runabouter, was $3,488.28. Past Commodore- Jim Heyden, stated what a great group the Milwaukee Boat Club was, and that he encouraged us to get some new members. Bonnie Merryfield, Director of Membership, had no report. Bob Kowalski, Director of Programs, had no report. Tom McElwee, Director of House and Equipment, indicated he would have more information after we decided on a future meeting location and the need for our refrigerator and cabinets. Leo Wagner, Director of Refreshments, told us of his adventures retrieving the beverages from the “moved” refrigerator. Wayne Happel, LMYA Committee Director, no report. Runabouter Editor, Dave Dorner, stated that it may be nice to advise the group if anyone had trip plans coming up, so that other members could join in the water travel. Advertising Committee, Pete Merryfield, no report. Scuttlebutt had no report.

Dave Dorner, as webmaster, stated to get information to him for the newsletter or e-blasts. Dry Dock & Welfare, Charlene Zierden, had no report. Club Sales, Nancy Grabowski, no report. Old Business was turned over to Wayne to discuss the loss of our clubhouse and what we were doing to find a new location. Wayne will prepare a separate report. We have been trying to find a home for the photo albums. Pete Zierden offered that we could store them in his heated warehouse mezzanine. Pete even has cardboard boxes for the albums. Wayne Happel will see that the large pot donated by Bill and Gloria Mitchelson gets turned over to Scott Burke for use at the picnic. ‘Tom McElwee, Dave Dorner, Tom Rach and Russ Berg will assist in moving the refrigerator, if need be. Dates to Remember, include Monday Madness at the Thirsty Duck hosed by the Danowskis. March 17th is the date of the next meeting with the location to be announced. April 6th is the Fox and Hounds hosted by the Schneckenbergs, April 21st is the White Elephant meeting. Dave Dorner will be the auctioneer. April 25th is Monday Madness hosted by the Miotkes. Judy Dorner informed the group that Eric “Diamond” will be performing at the St. Francis Brewery on March 5th. The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m. We followed with an enjoyable video (provided by Pete Zierden) of the moving of the SS. Kewatin from Saugatuck to Port McNicoll, Ontario. Respectfully Submitted, Russ Berg Yeoman

Dry Dock Dick and Nancy Grabowski are in Florida for the winter, and MBC members should know that on Wednesday, February 24th, Nancy fell and broke her hip. She underwent surgery but still has issues with her ankle and knee. Nancy is in rehab, and I’m sure she would love to get cards from the Grabowskis’ MBC friends. Cards may be sent to her at: 19333 Summerlin Rd #807 Ft Myers, Fl 33908 Please keep Nancy and Dick in your prayers

ANSWERS 1. You bet he does. He set your latitude on the sextant, looked directly north and simply spotted in the sextant telescope the exact spot where the North Star will appear. 2. Whaling ships occasionally took whales off Alaska that still bore old irons from ships that had confined their hunting to the Davis Strait and west Greenland waters. 3. In a primary rainbow (when you see only one), the colors always are, from top bottom, red orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. If a rare secondary rainbow pops up above the first one, the color bands will be reversed. 4. First, did you remember to check the tidal change in depth? If that doesn't account for the drop in water depth, and you haven't swung on the anchor-rode into shallower water, you're dragging the anchor. Get underway and reset it. (Of course, here in Wisconsin, we really don't have tides. But some of you boat in Florida). 5. The tugboat captain, by his question, clearly has salvage in mind. It’s a complicated business. Safeguard your position by telling him that you want to be taken off, but you are not abandoning your boat.

February Meeting The Zierdens were gracious enough to host

our February Educational meeting. The topic of the educational portion was a documentary film called “Bring Her Home – The Return of the SS Kewaatin” which was brought out of her scuttled home in Saugatauck, restored and returned to her home port in Port McNicoll, Ontario.
