VOLUME 247 FEBUARY 2015

February at the Northport Yacht Club started off with our hosting the annual Super Bowl Tailgate Party. The weather was mild, by February standards, but there were still snow banks to be scaled by children, barbecue to be consumed and just hanging out by the outdoor fire pits. It is a great event and one of my favorites. This is the party when the Members and Staff join forces and throw an incredible bash. Yeah, and there is a football game too. Thanks to all of

the Members and Staff for your outstanding efforts.

So now we plod through February, hoping that we can make it to March and get working on our boats. I shoveled snow off our boat before the Super Bowl. Today we received our Spring Work List application from Britannia. Summer cannot be far behind.

Back to the real world. February is an exciting month at the Northport Yacht Club. There is the Valentine Dinner on the 13th and the Wild Game Feast on the 28th. On a more operational note, we will be refurbishing the South Dock and the Kayak Racks. Hopefully the

weather will cooperate. This is the time of the year for all of us to make a Northport Yacht Club self-assessment. How do I share my talents with the Northport Yacht Club? Each and every one of us has something to bring to the table. How can we enhance the experience of being a Member of the Northport Yacht Club? When Janet and I joined the Club over 18 years ago, we were wondering how we could volunteer in the Club activities. For Janet, it was easy. guy. I work in the family business and that’s where I spent most of my time. If not there, I’m working on the organization of the Cow Harbor Race. That was it! I was building the clothing line to sell during Race Week and from our website. We are always looking for new things to offer our runners, so why not work on the NYC Ship Store Committee. The clothing line needed a facelift and I was willing to dig into the project. I participated on that Committee for years. From there I branched out, and eventually became

your Financial Secretary, every Member’s best friend. If I can find something, you can too. Please get involved. You’d be amazed how quickly you make new friends. Just don’t be the Financial Secretary.

I hope reading this made you think about your participation level at the Northport Yacht Club. Take a shot at something new. You’d be surprised how much fun it is!

By the way did you pick up your kayak?

What is the difference between “Country” and “Western” and what does this have to do with Northport Yacht Club? Saturday, March 21st, from 7pm to 11pm, the Adult Entertainment Committee is hosting a Country Dance Party. DJ Wrangler and an instructor will teach us four Country dances and then the rest of the time we can just dance. And no, we don’t mean we are going to be dosey-doeing. We will be doing Country Line Dancing like the Tush Push and the West Coast Shuffle and two partner dances like the 16-Step and the El Paso. And we have gotten special permission to wear jeans.

There are definitely crossovers between “Country” and “Western” music. “Country” generated from the Deep South and “Western” originated from the Southwest and West. “Country” emphasizes honky-tonk bar songs, personal/family connections, African-American blues, and broken relationships. “Western” emphasizes the life of the cowboy, songs of the range and cattle drives, and the scenic environment of the West. Of course, they both emphasize love songs. Just think of it this way: “Country” artists include Reba McEntire, Carrie Underwood, Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan, and the Rascal Flatts and “Western” artists

include Roy Rodgers, Gene Autry, Tex Williams, Johnny Cash and Garth Brooks.

Hope to see many of you at this casual, relaxed party. Please see the flyer in this issue for further details.

Don’t forget our beautiful Valentine Dinner, on Friday, February 13th, featuring music by Doreen Grimaldi and Down a Fifth. They will play jazz classics and standards of the Great American Songbook which are perfect for a lovely dinner. So bring your mate, and/or your friends and enjoy this stunning evening.

Please SAVE THE DATE. Our third Mariner III Cruise will take place on Sunday, September 13th, from 10:30am to 2:30pm. This is going to a brunch cruise with lovely food, good music, and wonderful friends.

ACE meets the first Wednesday of every month except for July and August at 8pm. It is a wonderful Committee and we always welcome new ideas and new Members.

Fleet Captain’s Corner

Moorings, Moorings, Moorings...Thank you to all Members who have gone online, or sent in your 2015 mooring request. To date, we have 147 boats that will receive a mooring assignment in a few weeks. Last year we had 188, and I suspect some of you have still not made your request. There is a reason that the first requests every year are Members who are past Fleet Captains themselves, as they know all too well how challenging it can be to accommodate Member’s requests to be assigned a seniority placement after the Mooring Chart has been completed. Therefore, if you don’t see your name on the list posted in the Club, (as of 2/4/15) please go to yearbook.northportyachtclub.com to make your mooring request.

Winter Speakers (Save These Dates)We have three speakers lined up for your listening pleasure. First, on Sunday, February 15th, at 3pm in the dining room, our own Dr. Tom Fischer will host a very informative session on First Aid, CPR, and review what you need on-board for a medical emergency. Then on Sunday, March 1st, at 2:30pm in the dining room, our own Jerry Moran (Past Fleet Captain) will host his annual discussion on boat preparedness, mechanical readiness, and how to avoid problems at sea. On the same day at 3:15pm, Vince Gerretz of the US Power Squadron will host a session on Boat Safety, Boating Equipment, and what to do in an emergency.

Wine and Beverage Committee Update

Hopefully by now you have had the pleasure of tasting many of our new wines. The recent wine pairing evening where we introduced these new wines was awesome. Here’s how we got to where we are now.

We’ve spent the last four months hard at work tasting wines. We had six meetings beginning with the first one on September 24th, where we discussed and outlined our goals. We tasted more than thirty wines, some good, some really good and a few not so good.

We started by being armed with good information. The conclusion from the wine survey was clear. With 132 responses, 41% said they were either not very satisfied or not at all satisfied with the wines served at the Club. Only 7% said they were very satisfied. Well, we kind of knew that. That’s why we started the Committee. However, it’s always good to have the quantitative backup.

On the question of: “If premium wines were offered by the glass, how much would you be willing to spend?”, 102 out of 135 said they were willing to pay between $8 and $14/glass. So that was also a mandate for change and better wines.

But when we looked at wine sales for a period between August and mid-September, we saw the biggest selling wines to be inexpensive house wines. (Since we have a POS it was easy to report on exactly what was sold.) Peter also got input from some members that they like the house wines at the below 6.00 price.

So, we mashed all that together and came up with what we believe is a good plan to satisfy all Club Members. (All subject to change and revision as necessary.)

Currently, there are 23 wines for sale by the glass. That was too many so we decided to cut that down to 12 to 14 wines.

We will keep the existing House Santa Marina Pinot Grigio. We will also have a new House red, a Cabernet Sauvignon replacing the existing House Cab.

We will have seven “middle-tier wines” including some we already sell. These will be in $7 to $9 range. • SauvignonBlanc–newwine• Chardonnay–newwine

• Pinot Grigio – We are keeping the existing Ecco Domani• WhiteZinfandel–Wearekeepingtheexisting• Merlot• CabernetSauvignon–newwine• Malbec–WearekeepingtheexistingMalbec

We then added some premium wines that will sell for a higher price including Greg Norman Estates Cabernet Sauvignon, MacMurray Ranch Pinot Noir and a Sanford Chardonnay. Several of the Chardonnays were very good and we may be rotating them.

Also notable is that we will be getting new, bigger and deeper, wine glasses which will make for a better wine drinking experience.

We will be getting something similar to the glass on the right in the photo above.

Disclaimer: while every attempt to accurately report the results was made, there may be some adjustments, changes or corrections. (I took these notes while we were drinking a lot of wine!)

I want to thank Vice Commodore Munch for his support and General Manager, Peter Doogan, who provided us with some very good wine choices and expert advice. I would also like to thank the Wine Committee Members who came up with great ideas, including Jim Montalto, Nadine Novak, Isabelle Pullis, Marybeth Amante, Patrick and Janice Winters, Pat Barbarino and Mary Speed-Perri, as well as Tom and Elise Berger.

Women’s Committee

The Women’s Committee decorated the Club on January 10th. Thank you to those that came down and helped us to get the Club back in order.

Health and Wellness SeriesPlease join us for our 2015 Health and Wellness Series. We kicked off on February 3rd with Northport Yacht Club’s very own group fitness instructors, Lori Bolger and Chris O’Brien, leading us through a fitness class incorporating: Booty Barre, a ballet-inspired fitness that tones and shapes muscles, increases flexibility and burns calories; and Yoga Tone, a creative combination of yoga postures combined with low-impact and core-conditioning techniques to enhance balance, increase mobility and reduce stress. Our next session is on February 10th, where you can learn about Reiki healing and meditation. Lori Bolger and Chris O’Brien will be back on February 24th, for another session of group fitness. The fee for group fitness is $10pp. On March 5th, we will be having yoga. Sessions are open to Members and guests. Make sure you secure your spot by registering at 631-261-7633, ext 21.

Our next Committee meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 11th, at 7pm.

Wine Pairing EventThe Women’s Committee and Beverage Committee

presented Wine & Hors d’oeuvres Pairing on January 15, 2015. This was a special night that showcased the upgraded wine selections that will be served at the club. The Northport Yacht Club’s very own wine sommelier, Jim Montalto, provided descriptions of each wine along with appropriate food pairing selections during the evening. The room was abuzz with Members mingling while tasting wines and enjoying light bites. We would like to thank Peter and his Staff for an exceptional job in making the night a success and the Montalto family for their gracious donation of a basket of wines from around the world that was raffled off.

Water Quality SeminarOn January 29th, the Women’s Committee hosted our first Water Quality Seminar. It was standing room only with 120 in attendance listening to a dynamic group of speakers. It was a night to communicate to our Members, other yacht clubs and the community about the quality of our local waters. Sarah Lansdale, Suffolk County Planning Director, opened up the event as our keynote speaker. The topic attracted press coverage, and County, Town and Village dignitaries. Thank you to those that helped make the event a success and a special thank you to Stephanie Quarles and Jon Ten Haagen for their time and efforts to attract quality speakers and put together a wonderful program.

Swim Team Farewell

Attention swim team families!

Sadly, Danielle and Randy Garrison have decided to step down as Swim Team Chairs.

Please make sure to give them a big thank you for their years of service running the team. They did an

amazing job and we are going to miss working with them tremendously!

The Garrisons went above and beyond when running the team and deserve our gratitude, it’s a huge job and they handled it well.

Northport Yacht ClubBoard of Governors Meeting

January 19, 2015Submitted by Rich Boziwick, Rear Commodore

Club Manager Peter Doogan’s Report: Full report on file.

Commodore Bostock’s Report: At the January Board Meeting, a presentation was made by the ad-hoc Committee charged with evaluating the lower spaces of the Club. These spaces include the old Board room, accounting office and several storage areas. Combined, these spaces make up a fairly large area which at present is vastly underutilized. During their presentation led by Alex Gayer, some creative plans were presented which would add great versatility to this area with some fairly simple modifications. The Board plans to discuss these ideas in greater depth with an eye on simplicity, functionality and cost. Space utilization and an initial floor plan were laid out with guidance from George Suddell. The Yearbook Committee has been busy updating Club Members’ info for the 2015 Yearbook. If you have anything you would like to change, such as a new boat, address or anything else which is included in the roster, please let Steve Pecchio know.

Our Fleet Captain, Jim Montalto, has several new cruise itineraries planned in ‘15 for holiday weekends as well as the two-week summer cruise and some special event cruises. Jim also has some excellent guest speaker events planned as well. Watch for details in HarborViews and email notices. The 2016 Caribbean cruise on the Star Clipper Cruise Ship has been well received with several couples from the Club already committed. Please see Jim for further details on this very interesting and special event. Mooring requests should be submitted as soon as possible, so that work on the Mooring Chart can be completed and sent to our mooring contractors.

As recently as the end of January, we had a couple of openings for new Members created as we often do in December and January. To fill these billets, the BOG met on the last weekend of January and the first weekend in February to review and vote on applicants presented by the Membership Committee. As a result, we continue to

enjoy a full roster with many applicants standing by to be vetted by the Membership Committee. Committee Chair John Amante and his team continue to do an admirable job of presenting some very fine candidates to the Board for consideration.

At this time we are preparing for the 2015 Annual Meeting. I hope to see as many of you there as possible. Members’ comments and ideas are always welcome. Next month, we will cover the meeting in further detail.

Vice Commodore Munch’s Report: Good evening. A big thank you to outgoing Secretary, Joe Kerner, and Governors Don Earl and Pat Winter. It has been great working with you. I know we will find ways for you to continue to lend your expertise to the Club.

As it seems that we will need to do major excavating in the parking lot in about five years to hook us up to sewers, I am postponing replacing the high voltage lines for now. When we put the sewer line in, we will also put in conduit. I am awaiting a revision of the estimate from Asplundh to rotate the transformer pad in order to make it compliant. While our electrician is doing the required work to hook us back up, I will have him make the Club generator ready, as well. Complicating the issue, as you may recall, we will need to disconnect and then reconnect the compressors for the walk-in refrigerator and freezer in order for the work to be done. This will require a refrigeration contractor. I am trying to get this all lined up so the work can be done in the early spring.

I am also soliciting bids to replace the steel doors at the entrance to the pool pump room, the locker room and the outdoor lavatories. The existing doors are rusting away and need replacement ASAP.

Mexican night was a big success, selling out the 6pm sitting. Several additional diners were accommodated later. We are planning to continue having differing themes for

22

future first Wednesday nights. “Brunch for Dinner” is the theme for February.

The ad-hoc Beverage Committee has completed its wine selection, which was launched January 15th, at our Wine Tasting night. The event was co-run by the Beverage Committee and the Women’s Committee. Seventy-eight Members attended this fun event. They sampled the eight new wines, that are now available by the glass, at the bar with traditional food pairs. Each received a commemorative etched wine glass. Those wishing to complete their set, can purchase additional glasses at the Ship Store. Thanks again to Chairperson John Perri and the Members of the Beverage Committee for their time and effort.

Women’s CommitteeAt the Wine Tasting, the Women’s Committee raised $470 on the raffle basket of wines from around the world, which was donated by the Montaltos. This money will be pooled with other funds raised, and used to benefit the Club. On January 29th, we sponsored a water quality talk. The night was a panel discussion with eight experts and County Executive, Steve Bellone, was the keynote speaker. We invited the Member Clubs of the Huntington Boating Council to attend. We had a large turnout for this very important topic.

WeareplanningtohaveZumba/AerobicsclassesTuesdayevenings in February. Lori Bolger and Christine O’Brien have offered to teach. The cost will be $10pp. Details will be e-blasted.

The Women’s Silver Tea will be held on April 19th.Please contact Janice Winter or Carol Alfiero for information on how you can help out.

Website Committee Bob is working with “Blast Master” Ann Snider to divide the current email list into several smaller lists. Members would be able to select which types of blasts they wish to receive. This is a large project and will likely take some time to complete. Any Member not able to access the Members’ area of the website or not able to reset their password should send an email to that effect to [email protected], and Chairperson Bob Snider will assist you. If you are interested in helping him in the maintenance of the Club website, drop a note to the same address!

Teen CommitteeThe Teen Committee is currently hibernating. Planning for the summer will begin soon. Anyone interested in helping out with the Teen Committee is encouraged to attend our next meeting or contact Chairperson Peggy Doherty.

Newsletter Committee Under the reigns of Chairperson/Editor Jeff Barasch, this Committee has delivered an outstanding monthly publication that all Members have come to rely on. Please send him your articles, photos or ads for consideration for an upcoming issue.

House CommitteePainting of the Junior Sailing room is completed. The Committee is currently redesigning the glass racks in the bar in order to accommodate the larger glasses that were recommended by the Wine Committee. All kinds of assistance is needed on the Committee. Please contact Bob Doherty to get on the House Committee’s email list or just come down Saturday mornings to join in. We start off the day at 0830 with coffee and a bagel and then work and until lunchtime.

Grounds Committee Nothing new to report and still gathering ideas for spring. Contact Jeanine Bravo or Janet Boziwick to help out.

Children’s Committee Anyone wishing to assist the Children’s Committee should get in touch with Chairpersons Kellyann Gayer or Lori Bolger so you can be notified of events and planning meetings.

ACE Attendees spoke highly about New Year’s Eve at the Club, as well as the famous Super Bowl Party. On Friday, February 13th, diners at the Club will be in luck as we will be celebrating St. Valentine’s Day. Callin’ all cowhands: Saturday, March 21st, is Country Line Dancing night, beginning at 7pm. We will have a “comfort food buffet,” with items like chili, ribs, baked beans, mac & cheese, and so forth. The signature drink of the evening will be a Southern-style lemonade served in a mason jar. There will be a prize for the “Best Look.” Jeans will be allowed in the dining room for this event. The cost will be $40pp.

Once again, we will have the Mariner III chartered for a

23

cruise. This year, we will do a brunch cruise on Sunday, September 13th, from 10:30am to 2:30pm. Please SAVE THE DATE.

At ACE meetings, we’re already talking about Commissioning. Beat those winter blues, swing by on the first Wednesday of the month for a breath of spring! Chairperson Joan Lowenthal and the Committee can use your help and your ideas. The next meeting is February 4th at 8pm.

Rear Commodore Boziwick’s Report: WaterfrontThe Waterfront Committee continues the maintenance and repair of the docks and floats. Within the next few weeks, they will begin the refurbishment of all of the Kayak racks on both the North and South sides. Thanks to Bob Moseley and his crew of Frio Hombres. At this time, there are only seven kayaks remaining on site. The Flag Officers will be meeting with the Treasurer to discuss a Spring Reclamation fee for those vessels that have not been picked up. We have made reservations for the two Club Whalers to visit the Storck Spa for their Winter Makeover. They will be returned in about two weeks for shrink wrapping. At that time, they will resume their bonding with the other vessels. The Dock House remodeling project is almost complete. Last item on the punch list is an additional window on the west wall. Thanks to Dock Master Will Scharrer and Launch Driver / Carpenter Mike McDonald for their winter season efforts. Junior SailingThe Junior Sailing Room Refurbishment project is just about complete. They will be replacing the desk and file cabinet. All that is left to do, is clean the place up and we are ready to go. Maryann Moran has been active assembling the 2015 Junior Sailing Program. She has hired our Instructors and we are now in the process of reviewing fees for the new year. A multi-vessel trailer is being considered at this time. We are collecting quotes and will make a decision in the next few weeks.

Adult SailingBarbara Viola has just sent out the invitation for the Adult Sailing Indoor Raft-up. This will be held on Thursday, February 12th. Soup will be served.
