H ello My OYC Family,
This is the last article I will write as your Commodore; so it causes me some sad-
ness and yet an immense amount of joy. While I will miss serving you in this ca-
pacity, I will take away with me enough memories that will keep me smiling for
years thinking about all of our shared adventures.
Our most recent memory generator was our trek to Seattle Opening Day where we
had two boats in the parade: A Flagship carrying our OYC Bridge and the Mighet-
to’s boat, Murrelet, decorated so well that we took second place in the parade.
Wow! We make a splash at that event.
But, truthfully, I was most impressed with our South Sound Opening Day. We had a full house on Friday
night and a full deck on Saturday for our ceremony. We were so fortunate that one of our members, Nancy
Stolarik, performed the Star Spangle Banner accompanied by the American Legion Band. To add to the
program the Band also wrote a song just for OYC titled Swashbuckler and performed it during the ceremo-
ny. We gave out two honorary memberships to Senator Karen Fraser and Mr. Lee Reaves. Seven of our 14
Grand Fourteen Commodores were also in attendance.
The ceremony was followed up by our Opening Day Parade with a whopping 29 boats! And then, everyone
joined us for our afternoon barbecue and it was so successful that we ran out of food.
What a way to end the year. Thank you. Thank you for your participation. Thank you for your kindness.
Thank you for the respect you showed me. Thank you for your sense of humor. And thank you for being
such amazing members of OYC. We are blessed.
You are in good hands with VC Mike and Patti taking over the helm with a strong team joining them. I’m
looking forward to riding as a passenger as we continue to work and play together and make OYC a pillar of
pride in the Northwest Yacht Club World.
Sincerely submitted,

The June Dinner Meeting will be our last regular club meeting until September. Your Board will continue to have
regular monthly meetings thru the summer. Members are welcome and encouraged to attend. You will receive
the correct information at these meetings which will be more accurate than the rumors from dock talk. Two hot
topics your board will be discussing are the new docks and acquisition of the two lots just south of our property.
Northwest Marine Trade Association has $17,000.00 in grant money that will be split between eight organizations
through its Grow Boating program. OYC’s Learn to sail program will receive 1/8th of that which is $2125.00.
Being a member of NMTA has paid off not only with our Boat Show booth but also with the receipt of these
funds.
It has been my pleasure to serve OYC as a BOT member and to work with the fine members Walt Schefter, Bruce
Snyder, Steve Parrott, Harold Carr, Rich Hurst, Theresa Madden, Bob Wolf, Bob VanShoorl, PC Mike Contris,
PC Jeff Pape, Commodore Myra Downing, Sue Wise and Treasurer Jon Bryant. I also want to thank all members
who responded to my calls for work parties during the dredge and piling projects.
See you on the docks!

Hello all, When you read this report, we will have had a great Opening Day of boating
season with unbelievable weather and a record number of people getting involved, and
then the Memorial day Cruise at Island Home. At this point, while I’m writing this re-
port, I don’t know how the weather will be, but I’m sure that however it is, we will have
a great fun-filled weekend. Also I would like to congratulate all of the new officers and
the new board members on their election to office…... we will have a great year. I am
looking forward to working with all of you. And I would also like to thank the member-
ship for affording me the privilege and the opportunity to serve you as your commodore.
In June, July and August, we have several functions and they are: the Change of Watch,
The Barbeque on the Deck, The 4th of July Cruise at the Island, Capital Lakefair,
The July Barbeque on the Deck, The Summer Cruise to the Islands, The August Barbeque on the deck,
The Labor Day Cruise at the Island, and I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the summer events.
The Summer Cruise to the Islands Update:
We will be having a meeting on June 16th in the clubhouse at 6 pm to discuss the moorage and to fill out rosters
for the marinas. This will be the last thing that we have to do before the cruise begins. I am looking forward to
seeing you and getting started on the cruise this summer!
Sincerely,
Mike Phillips

Well, here we are at the
end of the road for our
dinner meetings. We have
one last get together on
June 3rd and then off until
September. Since the June
3rd dinner meeting is the
Change of Watch, and a
big deal, it can only be that
the meal itself will be a
big deal. We’re having
steak! Not just steak but
steaks grilled on the open grill on the deck. For this we
have the head chef of Pellegrino’s handling the meat. It
will be an “on the deck” buffet serving Decorated Gar-
den Salad with assorted dressings, sliced watermelon,
corn on the cob, lots of butter, baked potato and the
trimmings, lots of butter, warm garlic bread, with butter
and of course the steak on the BBQ with steak sauce or,
should you prefer, butter. For dessert, Strawberry Short-
cake, no butter.
This special event is to celebrate the close of another
club year, induct our new Bridge officers, the secretary
and trustees and just enjoy. I, of course, was elevated to
the office of Vice Commodore which, among other
things, means this is my last effort arranging your din-
ner. I hope to make it worthwhile. Sort of a farewell
dinner for Catherine and I but we have truly enjoyed
doing this.
Also, I wish to thank all of those members who voted
for me in the election and directed that I should be the
club’s Vice Commodore. In that role I will dedicate
myself to faithfully represent those who voted for me,
abstained from voting or just blew off the entire elec-
tion. For each of you, and you know who you are, I will
cover your entire bar bill at the June dinner but only on
condition you actually attend and partake of the entire
evening.
But seriously, the evening is a special evening for both
Myra, our departing Commodore, and Mike who will
succeed as Commodore for the next year. It means a lot
to both of them and the other elected offices, as well as
the Club that you attend. Remember, if you are not al-
ready on the permanent reservation list you need to
make your reservation before Monday noon, June 1 by
calling the reservation line at 705-3767.
While you’re at it, even if you are on the permanent list,
you need to place your reservation for the Memorial
Day Cruise at Island Home to be held May 22nd through
May 25th. There will be a Bobby Brown ‘pig on a spit’
roast (yes, the entire pig, head to tail, with PC Tim and
Matt’s embellishments) with a few turkeys thrown in
plus much more. It’s the first of our major summer
cruises and a real great time. Its three days of eating,
drinking, playing games, using your boat and just being
with your friends.
It is also Memorial Day. We need to remember and
honor those who gave their lives so that we may all have
the freedoms we too often take for granted. To honor
those who have fallen we will have our own memorial
and wreath laying ceremony with PC Bob Job leading
our remembrance.
All in all, however, with that always in your mind, you
can forget your diets and enjoy your boats in a real so-
cial and meaningful weekend.
And speaking of diets I heard of a study conducted by a
prominent think tank composed of one nineteen year old
college coed who made national headlines. (God bless
the internet). She contends the American woman’s mod-
ern concept of the perfect physical man has morphed.
No longer do you (here I am speaking to our fairer
members) yearn for chiseled muscular bodies. These
are out. The man of your dreams now has what the au-
thor called the “Dad’s Body”. No, this is not what you
may think - a man that is slightly balding, overweight
and insensitive to your needs. Rather this new man is
defined as a man who works out occasionally, drinks
daily in modest amounts (?) and can still down six slices
of pizza at a sitting. Not said but within this definition
one must assume this “new man” is also sensitive. For
all of us who fulfill this definition – our time has come!
There is no real point to this other than I suppose the
parents of the author of the study are seriously wonder-
ing if the tuition dollars incurred to date have been wise-
ly spent.
That said, I have gone far enough for this month.
See you around.

A funny thing happened while
Lorie and I were serving as
Fleet Captain Sail for the
Olympia Yacht Club. The
more we got involved, chang-
ing up the social and eating
schedule for TGIF, introduc-
ing the Growler half-hour,
attending OYC events on a
regular basis, the more fun we
started having. In spite of what
the member’s directory says,
we have been members of
OYC since 2007, not 1983.
We joined initially because we loved the idea of mooring our
boat in such a great location in downtown Olympia.
I got to know Myra through South Sound Sailing Society orig-
inally and when she asked us to volunteer to be Fleet Captain
Sail, we said yes, because Myra has such a great amount of
enthusiasm and energy. I thought with her as the commodore,
we might not have to do anything. Well I was wrong about
that, but as we learned how to plan and run TGIF and change
things up a little here and there, Lorie and I realized we were
having the time of our lives.
At some point this past year, after a number of speeches at
Bridge meetings by PC Jeff Pape, talking about next year’s
bridge, Jeff asked me if I would consider running for Rear
Commodore. Lorie and I didn’t answer right away, but said
we would talk it over. We thought, heck, we might lose any-
way. Well it turns out that we weren’t running against anyone
else. But we looked back on our experiences as Fleet Captain
Sail, and realized that not only did we like all the activity we
were involved in, we discovered that everyone we had come
to know on this year’s bridge at OYC were just really great
people, friendly, unselfish and wanting OYC to be a positive
experience for everyone.
Since we have been members of this club, it seems that the
positive energy at OYC is at as high a level as I have seen.
Twenty-nine boats participated in the Opening Day Parade! If
that is not a record, it sure has to be a high water mark. All
this is to say, we look forward to our coming year as Rear
Commodore and we hope that we can bring the same pluck
and good natured manner to our year as I have seen Dean and
Tammy, Walt and Catherine, Mike and Patty, Myra and Joe
and Jeff and Debra provide this past year.
See you on the water!!

We want to thank all of the
wonderful people who helped us with South Sound Opening
Day of Boating. The turnout far
surpassed any we have seen in
recent years. It didn't hurt that
the weather was spectacular!
As we wrap up our final month
on the Bridge, we want to say a
huge "thank you" to everyone
who helped us this year and
participated in the cruising
events. It was a very rewarding experience for both of us. We
met so many wonderful folks. We are so excited for Marty and Jen Graf to take over the FCP duties. You can expect a
year of wonderful events with them at the helm.
Hope to see you on the water this summer.

First Aid Kits
Part 3
Medications
So now you have your book, kit, and assorted Band-Aids, what about medicines?
All of the following suggestions need to be filtered by your medical conditions such as chronic diseases and aller-
gies. For significant trips, consider a trip to your Doc for advice.
Over the counter (OTC) – Think of what might be catching enroute.
Anti-diarrheals – Imodium works great
Anti- acids – Tums are fine, but there are a spectrum of OTC treatments ranging from Pepcid to omeprazole de-
pending on the duration and time of onset desired.
Anti-histamines – For allergy symptoms or contact rashes from wandering too far ashore. These range from
Benadryl that is a great standby, but causes drowsiness, to the many OTC longer acting and less drowsy varieties
available now. Also consider topical forms for bug bites or stings. Topical cortisone or Benadryl are both OTC.
Tylenol (acetaminophen) — For mild aches and pains and occasional fever. Remember that you can only take
up to 4 Grams a day from all sources (i.e., Vicodin has acetaminophen in it)*
NSAIDS -- The Ibuprofen (limited to 2400mg/day*) and Naproxen class of pain and fever treatments. These
can be hard on the stomach (see antacids above).
* These doses really are the max unless you want you liver or kidneys to fall out. I don’t recommend you
take anywhere near these amounts. Check freshness dates of your onboard stash.
Constipation treatment – Laxatives of various sorts…….your choice
Prescription meds - I recommend having some antibiotics if you are going to be away from civilization. It is
nice to be able to at least control some skin infections, pneumonia, or urinary infections until you reach medical
help. There are a number of $4 meds available such as Cipro and Keflex depending on any intolerances or aller-
gies. Your doctor can help you with these. If you think you need these under urgent circumstances, you usually
will not do any harm by taking them. They can always be stopped.
Epi-Pens - For those who have severe allergic reactions or have friends with them, it is appropriate to carry
these. They are very expensive (Costco $478 for 2pack), but they are lifesavers for some who need it. They also
outdate fairly rapidly, so if you already have some, check the dates.
Your personal Rx’s - Bring a copy of your prescriptions to show the DEA, Customs, or CG if they wonder
about that baggie of assorted pills. If you run out or spill some, most pharmacies will sell you a get-home supply
with documentation. Also, if you do end up in some medical facility, they will appreciate knowing what you are
taking. Don’t assume that your sick and addled brain will remember! Bring the pill bottles unless there are too
many. Bring Narcotics only in their labelled bottles! Those guys in blue have no sense of humor about these.
Remember your pet’s meds as well.

Happy Spring everyone
It has been a busy time at the Main Station.
The trestle repair is scheduled for May 26, 27, and 28.
Please plan your trips to the marina accordingly. Marine
Floats plans for minimal closing of the walkway/trestle.
And has promised the trestle will be open for foot traffic
and lightly loaded carts at the close of the work day on
each date.
The east fence that borders Sylvester St. SW will be re-
placed with a five foot chain link fence with a locked
double gate for use by Olympia Fire Dept.
The OYC key card system is obsolete. The Main Station
Committee is in the multiple bid process to have the sys-
tem brought up to date at both the Main Station and Is-
land Home. More to follow.
The Main Station Committee is asking for a volunteer to
take on the position of boat house inspection lead. Please
contact the Main Station Committee Chair if interested.
Thanks again to Matt Kluh and the Main Station Clean
up Committee. The flowers are blooming and the proper-
ty looks great.

Hey kids! can you believe we are now half way
through the year? I know many of you have completed
your hours for the year and continue to do even more.
Kudos to all of you. Without your help the club would
be spending much more out of the budget for club
needs.
For the rest of you out there you still have plenty of
time and events to get your hours in. Several summer
events will need volunteers and there are always things
to be done at the Main Station and Island home. Con-
tact any Board or Bridge member or committee chair

I want to thank all of the members that turned out for our
annual "Spring Clean". We had over 25 people attend on
that sunny day, and I think all had fun. We were able to
do our 2nd bottom survey of the basin and will include the
findings in a future Beachcomber and add this to the next

Zincs The OYC Environmental Committee
has made a “Zinc Disposal Bucket”
available for convenience. You will
find it tucked behind the green hazardous waste container
in the parking lot. This is being done because in recent
years the cadmium in the sacrificial anodes has become an
environmental concern.
We all know and use sacrificial anodes on our boats and
change them regularly. Most of us know that if we don’t
the underwater metals on our boats will quickly be eaten by
the galvanic corrosion…Pitted propellers or worse. a
through hull weakened to the point of failure will result.
Renowned boat consultant Don Casey’s Complete Illustrat-
ed Sailboat Maintenance Manual goes into great detail on
when zincs are not zincs and treatment of props, rudders
and out drives. If you have any concerns be sure to check
his article at www.boatus.com/boattech/casey/sacrificial-
zincs.asp.
And remember next time you change your zincs, ask your
diver to leave the zincs so you can inspect them and then
look for the orange disposal bucket.

Moorage Report Bridget Shreve, Moorage Master
I have sent out notices to those boats that need their bur-
gees replaced or displayed. Burgees can be purchased from
the Quartermaster. There are just a few boats that still need some cleaning
done, but overall the marina is looking pretty good. I will
send out notices next month if boats still need to be cleaned up.
The Dinghy Dock....there are two dinghies that have been
on the dinghy dock for quite some time now. It is not there
for storage. It is there to help with transition. One is an 8'
Livingston with tabs expired in 2014. The other one is a 9'
Chilles inflatable with no identification. If someone knows
who belongs to these, please let me know so I can get in touch
with them to make other arrangements. I have had requests
from members as to the availability of the dinghy dock, but
with those two there taking up all the room, it is not possible
to accommodate other members. At this time the club is lim-
ited for room to hold dinghies, so consideration for other
members and cooperation is fully appreciated.
Thank you.

Nautical Notes
from out there…….
Out Cruising…….
Better late (five weeks, to be exact) than never; three
months and a week, all total. But with beautiful new
teak decks, Bright Angel moves out of the Brin Wilson
shed tomorrow morning - to the yard, for bottom paint
and prop speed, stepping the mast and installing the
rigging, stanchions
and lifelines, and
moving all of our
"stuff" back on
board. Then, hope-
fully in about a
week, we'll splash
and check every-
thing out - including
the new prop shaft,
shaft couplings, and cutlass bearings (yes, they had to
be replaced again, after they were replaced in Fiji last
June).
When everything checks out, we'll provision and then
head up to Marsden Cove to await a weather window
to sail back to the tropics - Fiji (west side, Yasawa Is-
lands) and New Caledonia, and possibly Vanuatu
(although now we are now thinking about spending an
entire season in Vanuatu, next year). With any luck,
we'll be underway by the end of the month, or by the
first week in June.
What an odyssey this has been; something we will on-
ly do once, for sure! (These new decks should outlive
us!) As with any project of this magnitude there have
been both ups and downs, but in the end we can say we
are truly happy with the craftsmanship of those who
worked on our decks. And I am truly happy that I will
never, ever, have to replace another bung - you will
notice on the pictures below that there is not one to be
found!
We hope all is well with you. Our best to all of you.
Take care.

The committee has requested that the board appoint
Steve Finney as OYC’s representative at future
RBAW board meetings.
On April 22nd the Department of Ecology (DOE) sub-
mitted to the city its analysis of the submitted ap-
proved draft Shoreline Management Plan. The Depart-
ment requires that certain provisions in the plan be
amended to receive final DOE approval. For the most
part, the changes DOE required that could affect the
club are favorable to the club and its interests.
Hal Wolfe from our committee will begin attending
Olympia Downtown Association meetings as our rep-
resentative. We have been a member of the Associa-
tion for years.
The new dock and pump out station at Percival Land-
ing opened on Wednesday, May 6.
The GAC does not expect to hold meetings in July or
August.
We are always looking for people who would be inter-
ested in joining our committee. If you are interested,
please feel free to contact me .
