TCM View of Immunity
• Qi – defense is one of the five functions of the body’s intrinsic energy
• Wei Qi – defensive energy
• Zhang Fu – all organs play regulatory roles in defense
• Six Layers – external factors (infection) enters the body in stages

Sleep-Cytokine Regulation
Severe sleep loss jolts the immune system into action, reflecting the same type of
immediate response shown during exposure to stress.
Diurnal Rhythms in Blood Cell Populations and the Effect of Acute Sleep Deprivation in Healthy Young Men http://dx.doi.org/10.5665/sleep.1954
Katrin Ackermann, et al
Comprehensive nonlinear curve fitting showed significant diurnal rhythms for all blood cell types investigated, with CD4 (naïve) cells exhibiting the most robust rhythms independent of condition. For those participants exhibiting significant diurnal rhythms in blood cell populations, only the amplitude of the granulocyte rhythm was significantly reduced by sleep deprivation. Granulocytes were the most diverse population, being most strongly affected by condition, and showed the lowest correlations with any other given cell type while exhibiting the largest inter-individual variation in abundance. Granulocyte levels and diurnal rhythmicity are directly affected by acute sleep deprivation; these changes mirror the body's immediate immune response upon exposure to stress.

Circadian rhythm and inflammatory bowel disease
Takagi T, Inada Y, Naito Y.
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), is a chronic and recurrent inflammatory disorder of the intestinal tract. It has been demonstrated that sleep disturbances are involved in the pathogenesis of the patients with IBD. In addition, it has been shown that melatonin, which is a hormone produced by the pineal gland and maintains circadian rhythm, plays an important role as regulators of inflammation as well as a player in proper immune system and antioxidant system in the intestinal disorders. In this review, we present what is currently known regarding sleep disturbances and the role of melatonin in intestinal inflammation.

Alterations in brain and immune function produced by mindfulness meditation.
Davidson RJ1, Kabat-Zinn J, et al
We report for the first time significant increases in left-sided anterior activation, a pattern previously associated with positive affect, in the meditators compared with the nonmeditators. We also found significant increases in antibody titers to influenza vaccine among subjects in the meditation compared with those in the wait-list control group. Finally, the magnitude of increase in left-sided activation predicted the magnitude of antibody titer rise to the vaccine.
These findings demonstrate that a short program in mindfulness meditation produces demonstrable effects on brain and immune function. These findings suggest that meditation may change brain and immune function in positive ways and underscore the need for additional research.

Mindfulness based interventions in multiple sclerosis - a systematic review.
Simpson R, et al
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a stressful condition; depression, anxiety, pain and fatigue are all common problems. Mindfulness based interventions (MBIs) mitigate stress and prevent relapse in depression and are increasingly being used in healthcare. However, there are currently no systematic reviews of MBIs in people with MS. This review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of MBIs in people with MS.
From the limited data available, MBIs may benefit some MS patients in terms of QOL, mental health, and some physical health measures. Further studies are needed to clarify how MBIs might best serve the MS population.
Medication & Immunity
“Bioregulatory medicine is a therapeutic modality within integrative medicine. In this system, a medical diagnosis is made, followed by an individualized assessment according to the severity of the patient’s disease. This takes into account the burden of exogenous and endogenous influences on the patient’s self-regulatory mechanisms. Treatment is then given, predominantly using homeopathically prepared medicines, to support the inherent self-regulatory ability of the patient by means of detoxification and drainage, immunomodulation, functional organ support, and support of the cellular metabolism.” Dr. Alta Smit, Heel Medical Advisory Board
