It’s harD to BELIEVE that a year has passed, and this is my last article as your Commodore. It has been another great year at Clearwater Yacht Club, and I want to personally thank all of the members who have supported me as Commodore of our great club. Carol and I have enjoyed this past year, and we will continue our involvement.

I do BELIEVE our Annual Meeting was a huge success! Our entire staff outdid themselves with every aspect of the evening. So enjoyable upstairs, and the great band Old School was so well received that we are moving them into our Fourth Friday slot for entertainment. Thanks again for the wonderful turnout and your support.

We BELIEVE our incoming Commodores: Greg Garner, Mary Kay Delk and Greg Crist will continue to lead our club into another successful year and will welcome any suggestions from our membership. Please continue to contribute in any way you can.

Speaking of BELIEVING, the holidays are upon us, and in the spirit of the season, we wish everyone a very blessed holiday and a wonderful New Year.

See you at the club!

CommodorePhil Beauchamp

WelCome baCk to WatersIDe.Now that summer is over and cooler

weather is beginning to settle in, things get more interesting around CYC. Outside activi-ties on the docks are more enjoyable, so take advantage of the beautiful fall weather and do some local cruising!

Call Linda Carter, our dockmaster, take advantage of the space at the docks and get your favorite beverage at the Tiki Hut. Remember to phone ahead for overnight slips. It’s im-portant to coordinate your plans with Linda well in advance to make sure you aren’t left out. She does a great job of ac-commodating as many as possible.

We plan to do maintenance on pilings and our support fleet in the coming months to keep them up to par. Thanks to our yachting members for taking good care of our club boats. They are critical for keeping our sailors safe and secure.

With the upcoming Change of Watch, everyone will have a renewed interest in the operation and maintenance of our great club, so make plans to be part of that event as well. Have a happy Thanksgiving and holiday season.

See you soon!

What a Year we have had! Many thanks to all the members who referred and brought in prospective members. You have made our membership promo-tions a success. I am looking forward to a great 2020, and with the start of our Winter Membership promotion, we are on our way.

Winter members are able to join for no initiation fee and dues of a $150 a month through March 31. At the end of the winter promotion, members in good stand-ing can join a membership class of their choice with all applicable fees being applied at that time.

Remember that CYC is the perfect place to host your holiday parties this season and bring in prospec-tive members. I look forward to meeting new and all members. Please introduce yourself and ask Tom if I’m around. I wish everyone a very special and happy holiday season.

The Membership Committee isn’t just about recruit-ing new members, but also retention of our current members. If you ever have any ideas, questions, sugges-tions or concerns, I encourage and welcome all mem-bers to come to a membership meeting or send me an e-mail at [email protected]. We meet the first Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the Board-room.

Please note the membership meeting for January will be January 7 at 5:00 p.m.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide

Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;

And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,

And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the seagulls crying.

Clearwater YaCHt Club raCe COMMItteerace Committee Volunteers! Please Mark Your

Calendars! CYC has a very ambitious regatta calendar for 2020.

February 1 we will be holding our Race Committee 101 class. This is a somewhat informal event to help familiarize people with how the races are organized on the water and what is expected of mark boat and race committee crews.

Laser Mid-Winter East regatta is February 19-23, and we need everything—but especially all manner of volunteers, including the following:

Photographers: We want to do a better job this year getting pictures of all the action on the water and around the Clearwater Community Sailing Center. Help us cap-ture the feeling of this event by getting things uploaded to our web page and Facebook page.

ambitious Drone Pilots: We see drones grabbing spectacular aerial footage at many regattas. If you have the equipment and are willing to help add to our web and Facebook pages, please let us know.

Marketing and Public relations: You can help by contacting local and regional media to help highlight and promote this extraordinary event.

Mark boats: We still need mark boats and mark boat crews.

Safety boats: We still need safety boats. It is preferred that safety boats are RIBs to help minimize chances of injury when lending assistance.

Judge boats: Judges require that they be permitted to operate the boats. As a result, in this instance, the boat

owner is asked to give up his boat for use by the judges without actually going along for the ride.

Shoreside: We can use help in several areas. We organize breakfasts for competitors and support crews, as well as food for after the day’s racing. We will need help with registration and equipment check-in. We are also looking to expand the number of people we can train to do scoring for the regatta.

Housing: We have a dozen or so judges each year, and it helps a lot, financially, if we do not have to pay for hotel rooms. We are always on the lookout for places to house our team of judges, so if you have a spare bedroom, please let us know.

The Sunfish Masters will run March 14-17. The National Championship at Midwinter will run March 19-22. For these we will need nearly as many volunteers as during Lasers.

We will be sponsoring the Clearwater Challenge, PHRF regatta, Saturday, March 21.

Please email us if you can help: [email protected].

CCSC regattaS:Clearwater Sailing Center is sponsoring several regattas

in early 2020. If you are willing to volunteer to be part of the race committee, CCSC will be happy for your help. If you just want to go out and spend the day watching some races, that is always a marvelous way to spend the day. January 25-26 420 and 505 Regatta

Sailing Activitiesby Claire englishthe Fall aFter-sChool Youth Sailing ses-sion ended in November. Instructors Mika, Cheryl and Rich did a great job. All sailors were able to refine their sailing skills, gain confidence and enjoy afternoons on the water. When we asked our youth sailors if they en-joyed the session, Elijah replied, “Sailing and being on the water is the best part of my day.” I think the others agreed.

The final details of our winter and spring sailing pro-grams are being worked out. Our Summer Youth Sailing “camp” registration forms will be sent out in January. Look for dates and info on our Facebook page or email [email protected] to be added to our email list.

The Ted Irwin Sail-a-thon, benefitting the Beach Community Food Pantry, is Saturday, December 7 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at CYC. We will be collecting canned food and donations for the Food Pantry.

As we wrap up 2019, we are grateful for our instructors, volunteers, sponsors and donors as they are our most valuable assets. We appreciate the assistance and guid-ance provided by the CYC staff, Board of Directors and Yachting committee. Special thanks to Commodore Phil Beauchamp for his leadership and support of the IRFSA and youth sailing. Without all of you, we would not be in the position to grow and expand our programs and out-reach into the community.

As always, we wish you fair winds, following seas and safe boating!

It has beeN a wonderful year serving as your Rear Commodore and a fun year chairing the Entertainment Committee. My heartfelt thanks go out to the creative, hardworking members of the committee. It has been so much fun collaborating with all of you this year.

The fun continues in December and beyond. One of our most ceremonial evenings of the year, our annual Change of watch, is December 7. the Island estates Yacht Club boat Parade is December 14. Get out that ugly holiday sweater for Mingle Jingle December 21. Save February 29 for a special leap Year Party on the water—an evening cruise is in your future.

Over the past year, the Entertainment Committee continued CYC favorite events and added several new events:

u Smooth Jazz Sundaysu Pirate Partyu Masters Watch Par-Teeu Magic Showu Dueling Pianosu Catalina Wine Mixer Tasting Partyu Rock the Runway Fashion Showu Food Truck Fridayu Italian Nightu Featured Band Friday (4th Friday of the month)u Send Me on Vacation, a fundraiser for breast cancer survivors

In addition, the focus of the Spring Fling was changed to be a fundraiser to benefit the RCS Haven.

This year we brought a businesslike approach to having fun as we measured the revenue impacts of special events, new events, Friday nights by band and Friday nights coupled with a Saturday night event. Overall, special events brought in $75,000 in revenue. Thanks also to Finance Committee Chair Rich Libonate, who provided us with the revenue statistics.

A warm thanks again for the opportunity to serve each of you as your Rear Commodore. I look forward to another great year ahead!

the gulls are pleased to again bring you Break-fast with Santa.

Mark your calendar to bring your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, neighbors, etc. for a great morning. Santa will arrive by boat Saturday, December 21, around 9 a.m. To make sure that he has presents for all the good little boys and girls, we are asking that reservations be made no later than Tuesday, December 17.

Please don’t put Santa on the spot not having a gift for your little one. Reservations are a must no later than Tues-day, December 17 (I know, I repeated myself).

In addition to Santa, Jason the Balloon Man will dazzle everyone with great balloon art, Bob Freiberg will do his amazing homemade pancakes, the ladies will lead singing of Christmas songs and read the Night Before Christmas. Santa’s Workshop will be open for all good little boys and girls to make a gift to take home.

Don’t miss this annual event. You know, make your reservations by Tuesday, December 17.

by greg garner, vice Commodore

HouSE and GrouNDSto begIN, I want to thank the great members of this club for al-lowing me to serve as your Vice Commodore and Chair of the House and Grounds Committee. It has been an honor and pleasure; I have been supported by excellent volunteers serving on the committee.

House and Grounds has had a very busy, but mostly behind the scenes, year. A lot of it was taken up with the replacement of the walk-in freezer and cooler, as well as the extensive floor repairs needed after their removal. It was a complicated job with many facets that required us to close the club for a week, but we were able to accomplish it and—for a change—came in under budget. In addition, both upstairs galley doors were replaced and brought up to code. Also, the galley was swabbed down, and the steamer was replaced.

While the walk-ins were a big job, H&G accom-plished even more. Thanks to a great suggestion by our member Jack France, we were able to harvest pavers from the dry dock to use for repairs and in the process create an outside dance floor. Following that, we stained and cleaned up the tiki bar and had an ice machine installed for dry dock use. The sprin-kler systems were repaired, and our front entrance landscaping has been refreshed, including trimming the palms before hurricane season. Even the lights on the tree by C dock have been restrung. Also, in the repair and replace category, we had to replace the heater/chiller for the pool and sealed and stained the boardwalk.

The club phone and Wi-Fi system have been outdated for a very long time. As a result, we installed a totally new phone system, added no-box cable to the docks and extended Wi-Fi coverage over the entire property, includ-ing pool and docks.

Finally, while not glamorous, Tom and I have established a quarterly walk-through routine to identify and log any and all touchup or repair items. That list is used by Tom and his staff to prioritize and complete the ongoing maintenance this build-ing needs.

In conclusion, we’ve had a very productive year at the club, and I’m extremely proud of the efforts everyone who participated in the House and Grounds meetings made for the benefit of the CYC. We are a great club because of our members, and I am proud to have been able to contribute.

the past tWo months have been full of fun, fun, fun! Let’s start with the October jaunt to Twin Dolphins Marina in Bradenton, FL, with 20 boats in our group and three brand new cruisers. Our hosts for this event were Doug Patton and Roxie Nilson and Chris and Isis Rogers. Our activi-ties began with a Thursday night Halloween Docktail in the pool area at the marina. Friday was a relaxing day for all, whether

perusing downtown Bradenton, relaxing at the pool or hitting the links on the golf course. Friday night our group enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Pier 22 restaurant at the marina.

Saturday morning

was a fabulous breakfast on Cat’s Life, consisting of champagne, bloody marys and Bananas Foster French toast. Thank you, Jim and Cat Coats. Following breakfast was a trip downtown to the Bradenton Farmers Market and then on to dinner at Mattisons Riverwalk Grill. Sunday was a leisurely cruise home, although some chose to extend the weekend’s fun.

The next event on our itinerary was a lot closer to home. Yes, Clearwater Yacht Club was the destination for our cruise-in. We were able to get eight boats into the club, and had 40 people attending the weekend events. Our hosts for this trip were Jim and Jeni Donnell.

Friday we started with a beautiful dinner at the Opal Sands

11December 2019 CYC Compass

Sea-Guini restaurant, then back to the club for a night of music and dancing. Saturday morning began with a delight-ful breakfast at Speggtacular, followed by a fantastic seafood and prime rib dinner at the club. Sunday was a true finale! We devoured fresh stone crab, prepared by Chef John and his crew, while enjoying potato car races run by Gary and Sondra Newcom. What a wonderful weekend!

Looking forward, don’t forget our annual Christmas party Wednesday, December 11. All cruisers are invited. Please be sure to bring a secret Santa present ($25 max) to have fun with everyone.

In January we are trying to plan a trip to St. Petersburg the third Thursday of the month. If you are interested in help-ing organize, please contact me through the club. Happy Boating!

Chaplain’s Logby Fleet Chaplain Father bob Wagenseil

everY Year the festivals of Christmas and hanukkah remind us that our God is the God who acts for good in the lives of human despair, joy in the midst of sorrow—and yes—bringing forth life even in the midst of suffering and death. But God doesn’t stop there. Having made us in his image, our God is also the God who is pleased to act in and through his people. The Hebrew Scriptures remind us that as God has blessed his people, so too his people are to be a blessing in return:

”Cursed is the man who withholds justice from the alien, the fatherless or the widow. ‘Then all the people shall say, Amen!’” Deuteronomy 27:19.

“If you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.” Isaiah 58:10.

That same message extends through-out the Christian Scriptures, as well:

“Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against cor-ruption from the godless world.” James 1:27.

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.” Matthew 25:35.

When we come to a moment in our lives that leads us to better understand ourselves as the beneficiaries of the mercy and loving kindness of our God, then the next step is always an invitation to “go and do likewise.”

Last month during our Annual Meet-ing we recounted such steps and gave thanks for the numerous occasions and events our club has engaged in to do just that. Indeed, CYC’s record of compas-sionate outreach to the poor, the hungry and those suffering from emotional or physical challenges is truly exemplary.

As the year draws to a close, we have one further event which will extend the blessings we have received to those in need: Saturday, December 7, our Intrepid Youth Sailors will once again offer the Ted Irwin Memorial Feed the Hungry Sail-a-thon here at CYC. Over the past three years, this event has enabled our kids to raise more than $10,000 to support the wonderful work of the Beach Community Food Pantry in Indian Rocks Beach. Through our young sailors, hun-dreds of needy families have seen the words of Jesus brought to life: “I was hungry and you fed me….” Through our young sailors, the words of the prophet Isaiah have been made visible in the 21st Century: “If you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will be-come like the noonday.” This is what “paying it forward” for the holidays is all about, and we are very proud of our young sailors!

We adults can also be part of that effort, and our support can take many forms: a cash donation the day of the event would be great as would dona-tions of canned food. However, equally appreciated will be our physical pres-ence to cheer them on and thank them for their good efforts. Please do your best to stop by the club anytime dur-ing the morning of December 7 and let them know that you share their desire to “pay it forward,” as well, and that you, too, are very proud of them.

Wishing you fair winds and countless blessings throughout these “holy-days” of December.

Don’t forget about the Island estates holiday boat parade coming up Dec. 14 . this is normal-ly a huge blast for CYC members, so make your reservations early. It’s a beautiful sight to see all the lighted boats circling through our basin.

IDEA- If your boat is in our marina, how about decorating with holiday lights? That would be an awesome sight and a great way for CYC to say Happy Holidays to the whole community.
