Fall Is In the aIr! Well, maybe a little farther north, that is.

This is the time of year when we start seeing our northern seasonal members, as well as our reciprocal members from around the country, return to Tampa Bay.

The club has been having a very good year, and we have been able to meet most members’ requirements for our many events, dining and service. Please remember—especially during the season—to make your reservations as early as possible for any and all times you are planning to use the club. Dates for both private parties and reser-vations for our “funtastic” events fill up quickly!

Last month we all said goodbye to Gage Crawford, who has been our Tiki Bar manager for the past six years. Ap-proximately 300 club members came out on a beautiful Sunday afternoon to wish Gage and his soon-to-be bride Emily all the best as they relocate to Maine. Under Gage’s leadership, the Tiki Bar has certainly become a favorite CYC “hangout.” His infectious smile, upbeat attitude, wit and dedication to our members make a winning combina-tion for everyone. Gage will be missed for sure!

Congratulations to PC Hoyt Nichols on his recent installation as President of the International Order of the Blue Gavel, District 8. This is indeed a well-deserved recognition for Hoyt and also an honor for our club. The IOBG mission is to “recognize Past Commodores of the international yachting community and to unite them in order to promote the highest ideals of yachting and pre-serve its customs and traditions through social, educa-tional and humanitarian programs.” Way to go, Hoyt!

Looking forward to seeing you at the club!

CommodorePhil Beauchamp

WelCOme tO WatersIde! While the summer has been hot, we’ve managed so far to avoid any meaningful storms. For that I’m sure we’re all very grateful. Especially those of us in charge of our aging docks. As many of you know, our pilings are deteriorat-ing at a rapid rate and will need replacing in the very near future. More on those plans later, but everyone will be excited, I’m sure!

There haven’t been any Waterside meetings all summer, but we’ll be restarting them in the fall. Keep your eyes on the Compass and email postings. Lots of stuff to talk about!

That’s it for now. See you around the club!

hellO, CYC memBers! We had a great summer membership drive, and I would like to give a great big wel-come to all our summer members who decided to make CYC their home! We are so pleased to have these new mem-bers on board. If you see the pineapple flag, be sure to stop by and say hi.

Hard to believe that the holidays are right around the corner, but they are! Our club is the perfect place to host a seasonal party for family, friends or coworkers. The main dining room, dry dock and Tiki are available to reserve for your festivities.

The Membership Committee isn’t just about recruit-ing new members, but also retaining current members. If you ever have any ideas, questions, suggestions or concerns, I encourage and welcome you to contact me at [email protected] or anyone else on the Membership Committee. We meet the first Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the boardroom.

By amie Crosby, membership Chairman

YachtingRace Committee Volunteers! Please mark your calendars! CYC has a very ambitious regatta calendar this spring.

CYC will host the Laser Midwinter East Regatta February 19-23. Some years we have seen more than 200 sailors from around the world, many of them using this regatta as an Olympic qualifying event. There are many, many opportunities for volunteers to become involved in this event: everything from registration to mark and safety boats. This is a great time, and a great way to serve the club.

We have also been invited to host two Sunfish class re-gattas, back to back: The Sunfish Masters’ Regatta and the National Championship at Midwinter Regatta. The Sunfish Masters, for competitors who are at least 40 years of age, will run March 14-17. The National Championship at Midwinter will run March 19-22.

Since these Sunfish regattas come so soon after the Laser Midwinter Regatta, we will be asking for many of our usual volunteers to do much more this year. We are also look-ing for people who have never become involved in our race management before to step up. These regattas are a lot of fun, and they are a wonderful excuse to get out on the water for the day.

Consider it an investment in your health and longevity. As we all know: “The gods do not deduct from man’s allotted span the hours spent in boats.”

Clearwater Community Sailing Center (CCSC) Race Committee

The CCSC is hosting two regattas this fall. CYC’s Yacht-ing Committee is supporting these events.

The Windfoil Gulf Coast Championships will be held October 25-27. This will provide opportunities for inter-ested people to help with Race Committee. We will have some room on the mark boats for folks who want to watch and learn about setting the marks of a racecourse and learn a lot about sailboat racing and tactics from a front row seat.

Windfoils are just a lot of fun to watch anyway.November 2-3, CCSC will host the Longboard (Wind-

surfer) Gulf Coast Championships. There will be Race Committee opportunities for this regatta, as well.Racing

CYC will host the Pass-A-Grille race October 5. Visiting competitors in these two regattas are invited to dock at CYC and are asked to contact Linda Carter by email: [email protected] for more information.

Beer Can Racing is in concert with the Dunedin boat club. The race schedule is as follows:

Gulf SeRieS October 26 November 23

Skippers can register for the gulf races online at http://dunedinboatclub.org/racing-2. NOR is posted there as well. The Pass-A-Grille race has a registration fee. For CYC participants, the Gulf Race results will count toward the Robert Word award.

italian night:BOnjOur! At CYC’s first toast to Italy, members had the opportunity to sample delicious dishes from around the country. “Salute!” to sponsors Charlie Geraci and Jack Yanno for taking our guests on this culinary adventure! Thanks to everyone who came out for a great evening.

dOrIan trIed and did cause wrinkles in CYC’s annual festivities, but our staff and membership rallied to enjoy a beautiful weekend. Members cele-brated the last “lazy, crazy days of summer” by loung-ing around the pool, chatting at the Tiki Bar, enjoying a great cookout prepared by Chef John’s crew and listen-ing to the smooth sounds of Life of the Party. Thanks, Dorian, for side-stepping Tampa Bay and CYC!

thIs mOnth Features two of CYC’s favorite traditional events. The first is the annual Blessing of the Pets Sunday, October 6. Father Bob orchestrates this special ceremony

that recognizes the im-portance of the love we give to and receive from our (mostly)four-legged family members. Be sure to bring your furry, feathered or scaly pet to receive its blessing. All critters are welcome!

Are you ready for a ghoulish great time? Then be sure to join us at our Halloween Party October 26! Who will have the scariest, funniest, best costume of all? It’s time to dig through your wardrobe to start planning your costume now! And, of course, you may enter our “Spooktacular” Haunted House—if you dare! Created by our own Dan Geis, his masterpiece of horror always tops off this annual favorite of fun, fun, fun!

“Send Me On Vacation!” Haven’t we all said those words? October 12 you will have the opportunity to bid on excellent vacation packages at this new event, which is a fundraiser for breast cancer survi-vors. Hosted by Greg and Christy Crist, this is a chance to have fun while helping others.

October 5 is an important occasion at CYC. We are hosting the Change of Watch for the District 8 International Order of the Blue Gavel. Come see the installation of our own PC Hoyt Nichols as District 8 Commodore in this very special ceremony, followed by a lovely dinner dance. All members are invited.

October 25 is Featured Band Friday. You know how good these bands have been, so be sure to join us for a great night.

Featuring many fun events, CYC ushered in fall. We kicked September off with Italian Night, which featured a great buffet of Italian favorites. Our Motown Party had everyone groovin’ in a packed house to their favorite oldies. How about the Benjamin Road Band as our Featured Friday Band? They rocked the club! Finally, we bid farewell to summer and gave Gage the wonderful sendoff he deserves as he starts a new life with Emily in Portland, Maine.

WHat a senD-off!In One OF the biggest turnouts in 2019, ap-proximately 300 members, staff and friends came out Sunday, September 22, to honor Gage Crawford, our beloved Tiki Hut manager as he says goodbye and heads back to his home state, Maine, with fiancé Emily. We first met Gage when his mom Robin moved from Maine to Florida and joined CYC’s wait staff. Soon Robin brought Gage into the CYC fold as well. He quick-ly took over the Tiki Hut, where he has reigned for six years, making it a favorite spot among club members. How? Here are some of Gage’s golden rules:

l Greet each and every person with a smile!l Remember everyone’s name and drink of choice.l Hustle! Hustle! Hustle! Get those orders out!l Don a costume at every possible opportunityl Work tirelessly, even at 2 a.m.l Concoct amazing cocktails (and drink specials!)l Use artistic talent to “dress” the club.l Treat every person as family!

We love you Gage. We wish you and Emily the best!

House and GrounDsas We transItIOn into the fall season and our traveling mem-bers return home, House and Grounds is preparing our club for a busy fourth quarter, starting October 5 with the Blue Gavel Installation of the State of Florida officers, including our Past Commodore Hoyt Nichols as the District 8 President. This will be followed by our Annual Meeting November 9, Change of Watch Ceremony December 7, the IEYC Memorial Boat Parade December 14 and New Year’s Eve December 31.

Our focus heading into “the season” includes touch-ing up paint and shampooing carpets that are still in good shape. We plan to replace the worn out carpets in the Dry Dock area and the boardroom upstairs. We are also looking into adding some high-top tables and chairs next to the Tiki Bar, using funds available. The weather finally cooperated long enough for us to start our landscaping on the street side of the building. The balance of the year will be used to take care of loose ends on a variety of projects.

It’s been a great year for CYC and the House and Grounds Committee. My sincere thanks and admi-ration goes out to all the great members who have helped during the year.

House & Grounds meets at 6:00 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month. Come be a part of the love that goes into taking care of our “Lady” and her members.

Gulls TracksBy lynne shackelford

Gulls President

the Gulls are ChanGInG!!In 1977, CYC members Margaret Haselman, Connie Ayward

and Helen Eckhoff organized an innerclub group to promote friendship and assist CYC with fundraisers and events.

With the passage of time, habits, lifestyles and interests evolve, so now it’s time for the Gulls to change, as well. In short:

The Good News: The Gulls are not disbanding The Bad News: No more monthly ladies luncheonsThe Good News: No DuesThe Bad News: Not as much financial support to the clubThe main reason for changing is that over the past few

years, we’ve lost active support for organizing our functions. The five active ladies, who include the current officers, have been handling all the details of every event. We clearly want and need new people to step up and take over running our organization.

Until we have new leadership, we will still hold our week-ly Wednesday socials and sponsor Breakfast with Santa. We’ll still support, as best we can, Toys for Tots, ARC Fun Day and the annual Christmas tree in CYC’s lobby.

We are proud of the Gulls history with CYC. For more than 40 years the Gulls have purchased many items for the club and the community. The fundraising that started in our very first year has raised more than $84,000 for club gifts, program support and charitable contributions. Tan-gible gifts totaling more than $50,000 include:Renovated/redecorated ladies’

restroom at least five timesThree pianosTwo pool heatersPool patioDance floor and rugCarpetValences and blinds(multiple times)Projector, screen, PA systemThe Gulls have also contributed many hours and funds

through the years, including our famous fashion shows, decorating for parties, even covering the phones when needed and helping mail the Compass!

Our charitable activities have included donations to the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary, the Marine Science Center and the Clearwater Aquarium. Our handmade contribu-tions include cancer hats to Morton Plant Hospital; baby hats to Morton Plant and NE Georgia, and lap robes and hats to veterans.

if you are interested in being part of a friendly group that has a lot of fun while giving back, please contact me at [email protected] about becoming a Gulls officer. If there is enough interest, we will schedule an organizational meeting. I hope to hear from you soon!

Chaplain’s LogBy Fleet Chaplain Father Bob Wagenseil

eVerYOne Can use a little blessing now and then…especially when you spend your life trying to please the ones you love...especially when you are standing guard over your family night and day...especially when, for all your efforts on their behalf, you are still completely dependent upon the ones you love…especially when you come from a long line of faithful companions whose loyalty and devotion to their hu-man families know no bounds.

After all, you are part of God’s creation that provides sight to the blind and mobility for those who cannot walk. You are the ones who search for survivors after earthquakes, fires and floods. You were the ones who worked side by side with us at Ground Zero long ago. You are the ones who

protect our troops during times of war. You are the ones who bring comfort to the sick and the suffer-ing in hospitals, nursing homes and prisons. You are the ones who continue

to show us the meaning of these prayerful words spoken long ago: “Where there is hatred, let me show love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.”

Yes, everyone needs a blessing now and then, and at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, October 6, we will gather once again for our Annual Blessing of Pets (all pets: cats, dogs, ham-sters, birds, etc.) But as we do, we humans will perhaps remember how it is that when all is said

and done, it is you, our beloved pets, who have given the blessing, for it is through you that we have seen the power of unconditional love, forgiveness and devotion to touch our lives for good.

Wishing you and your family many blessings!

hI eVerYOne! While we missed the August Compass deadline, we are ready to start reporting on our trips.

In August the Cruisers traveled to Longboat Key Moorings for a wonder-ful weekend. Almost everyone arrived on Thursday and attended our Docktail Party, hosted by Becky Griffin and Barbara White. After a wonderful meal of heavy hors d’oeuvres, we enjoyed a lively game of Bingo. Friday consisted of a trip to St. Armand’s Circle for shopping and lunch at Tommy Bahamas or golf at the Longboat Key Golf Club. Friday night was a delightful dinner at the newly renovated Bird Key Yacht Club. Saturday most of us relaxed around the pool and enjoyed playing a new game for most of us, Pickle Ball. Thanks to Cliff Wyatt for kindly instructing us. Saturday night we gathered at the Columbia Restaurant—always a treat—for a delicious meal. So, chalk up another fun cruise with the Cruisers.

September will be another good time with the Commodore’s Cruise to Marina Jack in Sarasota the week-end of September 26-29. October 31-November 3 we will

The Annual Blessing of Animals & Pet Parade will happen Sunday, October 6, at 1:00 p.m. This is an awesome gathering of mostly dogs—although we’ve had cats, birds, an African tortoise and a pig here before! It’s so cool watching our Fleet Chaplain, Father Bob Wagenseil, as he blesses each and every pet and owner. Please plan on being part of this special occasion! Even if you don’t have a pet now, it’s still great fun! After the blessing, we have some fun with silly pet tricks.

New to us this year—”Send Me on Vacation,” fundraiser on the Tiki Deck Saturday, October 12! Since it is “Pinktober,” CYC mem-ber Christy Crist has found another way for us to give back to those less fortunate, in this case, cancer survivors! We’ll have silent and live auctions—just wait until you see our auctioneer! More details to follow. Save the date for this dockside evening event.

Being October, our biggest party must be Halloween!

Maintenance Supervisor Dan Geis pulls out all the stops with his haunted house upstairs where the buffet is usually located. If you’re a new member reading this, trust me when I tell you this party is not to be missed! This year the party will be Saturday, October 26,—start planning now! Music, great food and costume contests! JR returns to play all night...BOO!

Sunday, October 27, we have our usual Sunday breakfast, but we will also host our Children’s Halloween Parade of costumes. Those old enough love going through the haunted house, but some of the younger ones won’t go near it...it’s that scary!

Keep those comments coming! It’s important that we know how

your experience is here—from the taste of the meals to the quality of your service. We want to make your club the first place you choose to dine as well as the place you want to bring friends and guests to impress them!

At your service, I remainTom Brusini
