High School: It’s all about the credits.

Students earn .50 credit for every semester class they pass or 3.0 credits each semester.

In four years, students have the potential to earn 24 credits.

If students don’t pass classes and don’t earn credits, they fall behind… To be a sophomore, students need 5 credits To be a junior, students need 10 credits To be a senior, students need 16 credits

It all starts in 9th grade…which student will you be?

The Destructive Power of Zero Here is a Skyward Gradebook entry on a typical 11th grader. The current grade is a D. The student has A’s on everything

except two missing assignments worth 50 total points. Is this really a D student?

Page 7: Class of 2019 What every Freshman needs to know!

The Destructive Power of Zero Look what happens if the student had turned in something

(even though still F work, 12 out of 25, 48%).

Their grade went from a D to a B+!

There are 0 Missing assignments in SEMESTER 1 – S1 for this class

The Destructive Power of Zero So what’s the message?

Always turn in any assignment---even if you haven’t quite finished it or it’s “less than perfect.”

You can keep a grade at a level where you have a chance to pass if you follow this advice.

You almost guarantee extreme danger of failing a class if you turn nothing in, and a string of zeros is what Skyward has to average.

GPA (Grade Point Average)How’s it calculated?

A = 4.0 B = 3.0 C = 2.0 D = 1.0 F = 0.0

So if you have the following semester grades: Digi-Tools B 3.0 English 9 A 4.0 Biology C 2.0 Spanish 1 C 2.0 World History 9 A 4.0 Algebra 1 B 3.0

18 / 6 classes = 3.0Your GPA is 3.0!

Advice from the experts…

• “Come to class prepared to learn: physically, mentally, with the required supplies and the outlook that, “I am going to learn today.”

• “Do your homework every day and ask questions about problems you do not understand.”

Mr. Taylor - Math

• “All of our LHS English teachers require students read for pleasure. I think that students who say they don't read for pleasure just haven't found the right book.”

• “Get to know the library. It’s one of the best moves a student can make--books, computers, a quiet study space, and experts ready to help you!”

Ms. Wright– English

More advice from the experts…

• “All your class work and homework should be TAPED into the journal in chronological order.”

• “Keeping a neat organized and complete science journal is very important in Biology as we let students use these journals on quizzes and some tests.”

Mr. Ray - Biology

• “Keep your work in an organized manner. The bottom of your backpack isn’t a good filing system.”

• “If your teacher had you work on something, be sure to know if it is to be turned in. Chances are it will, so write the due date on the paper.”

Mrs. Erickson - Health
