CIPTA 2013 HANDBOOK

BackgroundThe Crown Prince CIPTA competition is held in support of innovation and creativity in Brunei Darussalam. It is a biennial competition which is open to all schools, technical and tertiary educational institutions, government and private organizations as well as the general public.

This competition is organized by Institut Teknologi Brunei in partnership with Brunei LNG. The winning projects in the competition will be recommended to appropriate authorities for further sponsorship, research, development, commercialization and entrepreneurship.

CIPTA is an acronym for “Creative, Innovative Product and Technological Advancement”. The competition covers all areas of science, technology and engineering such as mechanical, civil, electrical, electronics, computers, microprocessor, petroleum and chemical engineering. It is a competition to bring forward potential inventors with creative and innovative ideas for new products (prototype) or processes and pioneer new technological developments. It is also a competition to cover creative and innovative ideas in the modification of existing product, process or technology to improve or enhance its function and quality.

The first CIPTA competition was held in 2005 with the theme “Creativity and Innovation for Scientific and Technological Developments in Brunei Darussalam”. For this year’s competition, the theme is “REACHING AN INNOVATIVE SOCIETY FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE”.

Objectives

Patronage

The objectives of CIPTA are to:

• inspire youth and public to develop creative products, processes or technology for national aspirations

• encourage inventions and innovations in Brunei Darussalam• recognise and award creative talents in the country• encourage research and development in Brunei Darussalam• promote manufacturing processes, technological products development,

commercialization and entrepreneurship in Brunei Darussalam• embed the culture of science and technology to the youth and public

The competition is graced with the patronage of the Crown Prince, His Royal Highness Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah with the consent of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien. The competition therefore carries the prestigious Crown Prince Creative, Innovative Product and Technological Advancement (CIPTA) award or the Crown Prince ‘CIPTA’ Award for the grand prize to the overall winner of the competition.

The CIPTA Logo

Acronym in Abstract

A suitable logo was designed through competition among ITB staff and students. The CIPTA logo was designed by Pg. Dr. Haji Md Esa Al-Islam bin Pg. Haji Md Yunus, a Senior Lecturer of the Mechanical Engineering Programme at Institut Teknologi Brunei.

The acronym for the “CROWN PRINCE CIPTA AWARD” is designed in the form of flowing “ribbons” to reflect vibrancy and innocence that represents youth.

Globe and Abstract MotifsThe abstract motifs which surround the globe indicate that this award is a stepping stone for Bruneians to be at par with other international counterparts.

Map of Brunei

Bubbles

The map of Brunei with its national colours reflects the extent of the competition. It also symbolizes the creativity, innovativeness and competitiveness of Bruneians in the modern era while maintaining our traditional values.

The bubbles floating out from the map of Brunei and revolving around the globe represent excellence, quality, imagination, creativity and innovativeness which reflect the dawn of a new era of local inventors. They also signify teamwork as one of the objectives of the CIPTA award.

Colours

The use of colours in the logo symbolises the hard work that potential local inventors experience in creating fresh ideas with knowledge and resources. These basic colours also represent the colours of Institut Teknologi Brunei as the pioneer and organising body of this prestigious award.

Overall, the logo embodies “THE CROWN PRINCE CIPTA AWARD”, which will showcase the creative and innovative product and technological advancements of potential local inventors who can then awarded nationally well as potentially be recognised internationally.

Rules & Regulations1. The competition is open to residents in Brunei Darussalam.2. Local citizens can submit their entries individually or as a team.3. Foreign residents would have to partner with locals for their

participation in the competition.4. Participants must enter the competition either individually (only for

locals) or as a team not exceeding more than three members.5. Staff and students of schools, technical and tertiary educational

institutions as well as staff from government and private organisations are eligible to participate in the appropriate category of the competition

6. Each participant or team is allowed to submit one entry only.7. The work presented must be original and not awarded in other

competition.8. The work presented must not be more than three years old.

The criteria for judging the projects may include the following:

• Novelty, originality or creativity of work• Adaptability to commercial product/process development• Contribution to meeting the human needs and impact on society• Marketability• Presentation

Categories of Competition

Category 1: Creating New Product, Process or Technology

This covers all new products, processes or technology for the benefit of society and/or environment.

Category 2: Modify Existing Product, Process or Technology

This covers modification to any exist product, process or technology, which can improve or enhance its function or quality.

Category 3: Creating New or Modifying Existing Product, Process or Technology by Young Inventors

This category is open to upper secondary students. It covers categories 1 and 2,it also includes the innovative use of multimedia to demonstrate a scientific principle or concept and creation of a piece of work which explores issues

surrounding science and technology.

The competition comprises of the following three categories:

Three Curved Pillars

The pillars stand for three fundamental criteria for creative products, which are science, technology and innovation.
