Church of the Assumption September 20, 2015

A note from the Pastor

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

T oday we celebrate Catechetical Sunday, and we

acknowledge our CCD teachers and their generous

dedication, as we pray that the Holy Spirit may accompany

them in the important task of introducing our youngest

generation into the basics of our faith. On this important day I

would like to invite all to reflect on the necessity to announce

the Gospel at all times and in every place, especially to those

who are far or have weakened their relationship with God.

Pope Francis clearly sees all catechetical activities as part

of the missionary task of the Church. In his document

Evangelii Gaudium, “The Joy of the Gospel” – which he wrote

in 2013 at the conclusion of the Y ear of Faith – the Holy

Father urges us to “to recognize that there must be no lessening

of the impetus to preach the Gospel to those who are far from

Christ, because this is the first task of the Church.” Again,

“that missionary outreach is paradigmatic for all the Church’s

activity.” Therefore, “we cannot passively and calmly wait in

our church buildings; we need to move from a pastoral

ministry of mere conservation to a decidedly missionary

pastoral ministry” (Evangelii Gaudium, 15).

From the Gospel of Matthew we learn of the Lord’s

missionary mandate: “Teach them to observe all that I have

commanded you” (Mt 28:20). It’s a mandate that – Pope

Francis says – includes a “call to grow in faith.” Such growth

includes both the deepening of one’s knowledge of the

Church’s doctrine, and the observance of “all that the Lord has

shown us as the way of responding to his love” (Evangelii

Gaudium, 161).

But how does all this process begin? For young kids, the

parish provides Religious Education – not an extra burden or

obligation, but rather a place where children may hear of the

love of God revealed to us through his Son Jesus Christ, lived

and nourished through the Sacraments and one’s personal life

of prayer and works of charity.

For the adults, our parish in now proposing a new free

series of Catechesis that will begin October 12. The Catechesis

responds to Pope Francis’ invitation to rediscover “the

fundamental role of the first announcement or

kerygma” (Evangelii Gaudium, 164). St. Paul writes that

“faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes

from the preaching of Christ” (Rom 10:17). Therefore, God

wanted to save those who believe “through the folly of the

preaching” (literally, through the kerygma – 1Cor 1:21).

Pope Francis says that the proclamation of the kerygma –

of the Good News, of the Gospel – is “the principal

proclamation, the one which we must hear again and again in

different ways, the one which we must announce one way or

another throughout the process of catechesis, at every level and

moment” (Evangelii Gaudium, 164). The “motto” of our

Catechesis for Adults and Youth is “Come and Listen!”

Please, pick one of the “Save the Date” flyers found by the

doors of the church, and mark your calendar for this important

opportunity to hear once again the proclamation of the love of

God for all of us. Come, listen and … bring a friend!

With my blessing,

Fr. Paolo

SHARING GOD’S BLESSINGS APPEAL - This May, the Archdiocese of Newark welcomed nine newly ordained Transitional Deacons and twelve newly ordained Priests. Ordinations took place at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. While many dioceses in the United States have no candi-dates for the priesthood and clergy shortages are wide-spread, the Archdiocese of Newark is blessed with several men each year who are willing to answer God’s call to serve, insuring that the Church will be present for future generations. In fact, the Archdiocese of Newark has or-dained more priests than any other diocese in the United States. A portion of the funds collected by the Annual Appeal supports the seminary training and formation of new priests. Your support of the Annual Appeal continues to directly support the three seminaries maintained by the Archdiocese to educate and train future priests. Thank you for your continued support and generosity.

IMPORTANT !!
