helping you make an informed choice about the subjects available for continued study at CBS Glen Road. We would encourage you to take time to consider your options, to speak to your teachers and parents as making the correct choices at this stage is vital. ☺ The school offers a range of topics all of which are taught by a dedicated specialist staff. The A’ level and BTEC courses on our curriculum are both challenging and relevant to our pupils and their future needs. Introduction to Alternative Courses BTEC’s are new awards introduced by Christian Brothers’ School in partnership with Further Education Institutions to assist the transition in to Further -Higher Education. Parents and students should consider that these new BTEC awards have equal status to the traditional A Level programmes. The main differences between the A Level programme and the BTEC programme is that BTEC’s provide for a skills based approach in which, the knowledge content is applied to a “real” work based scenario potentially making the learning more relevant to the individual student. Currently our school offers BTEC’s at KS4 and SK5.

ASSESSMENT: [Internal] Each student is required to complete a portfolio of evidence [Reports, assignments, observation reports, professional discussions] to demonstrate achievement of all learning outcomes associated with each unit. EDUCATION MAINTANCEANCE ALLOWANCE

What is EMA? EMA stands for Education Maintenance Allowance. It is a payment of up to £30 per week, paid directly into your bank account every fortnight (making a fortnightly payment of £60) to help with the cost of continuing with your education. In addition, eligible, approved EMA students may receive bonus payments of £100 which are made up to three times a year, if you continue with your education and meet the objectives of your course. Who is eligible to receive an EMA? You are eligible to receive EMA if you:

- Remain at a school or further education college in Northern Ireland. - Celebrate your 16th, 17th or 18th birthday in the current year that you are

applying for entry in to 6th Form. - Live in a household that has an annual income of less than £30,810 per year.

The Education Maintenance Allowance is a payment of £10, £20 or £30 per week paid directly to student who remain in education after compulsory schooling ends. If you remain in education and meet the age requirements, you can apply to receive this allowance to help you during your time in education.

Entry Requirements Pupils from all other schools are welcomed either on a full-time basis or a part time basis after consultation with their main school principal. To be admitted to Christian Brothers’ School Sixth Form, pupils will normally have to satisfy the following minimum requirements:

1. A minimum of 4 GCSE A*-C 2. It is strongly recommended that students have a B in a

subject chosen for AS and A’ Level 3. Pupils must undertake to pass Maths and English GCSE if

they have not already done so In addition, students must:

1. Submit an application to the school 2. Meet with the principal or a member of senior management

before entry is approved 3. Meet the academic criteria 4. Be committed to the school ethos and be prepared to meet

the expectations we require from sixth form pupils.

A commitment to CBS We expect you to set the standards, not just in our school, but in the wider community. You will be expected to become leaders within the school. Younger children will look upon you as an example and your teachers will expect excellence in all aspects of your schooling. CBS is a school we are all proud of and by joining our sixth form you will be making a commitment to working towards, not just your own personal goals, but also our goals as a school. As a school community we have worked hard for five years with you to overcome many obstacles. Now, as you decide on your future, you must consider all your options and decide what is best for you. For over 30 years our pupils have beaten all the odds to become leaders that we can all be proud of. Our school has always played a major role in the lives of the pupils and now this will be greatly extended through our increased curriculum programme, our links with FE and University, our links to the local community and finally our collaboration and partnership with other schools. Code of Conduct “Like everything in life, unless there are rules, nothing can work properly.”

The school is a community which requires some regulations. To you students who have decided to continue your education here in CBS and also to those of you who have come from other schools to join our sixth form we ask that you abide by the following code of conduct.

The school day begins at 8:55 a.m., and you are expected to be present then for registration. You are also expected to be present for afternoon registration, and may not leave for home study until after this time unless you have special permission from your form tutor.

You are expected to bring a note written by your parent/guardian to explain any absence. Try to make routine medical and dental appointments at time outside the school day. You may not book driving lessons during school time. Please avoid booking family holidays during term times as teachers cannot undertake the additional work involved in going over work with you, on an individual basis, if you have missed teaching while you have been on holiday. While we have to reluctantly agree to your parents’ wishes for family holidays, permission will not be given for you to go on holiday with friends.

If you are persistently absent (and/or late) without good reason your tutor will give you a warning. If the situation continues we will write to your parents and require that you sign a contract which sets a target for attendance (and/or punctuality) as a condition of you remaining in Christian Brothers’ Sixth Form.

Christian Brothers’ Sixth Form has a dress code. If your dress is inappropriate, you will be sent home to change.

You are responsible for your school work and will be expected to develop good working patterns so that you can meet the deadlines set by staff. Your tutor and heads of

subject departments will be informed if there are problems. If you fall behind, or feel overwhelmed by work, discuss this with your tutor who will try to help you to rectify the situation and negotiate with members of staff. Some deadlines for coursework are non-negotiable and staff cannot mark work after deadlines for assignments which form part of final AS/A’ level assessments, have passed. Think carefully about commitments to paid employment outside school, making sure you leave yourself some time for socialising and relaxation. You must not undertake paid employment during the school day, even if it is a home study time.

As a 6th Form Student some of your classes might start and finish at times outside the normal school day or week. It is in your interest to be aware of the course structure and your responsibility to attend all classes punctually.

Radios and MP3 players may only be played during break times. Machines playing during lesson times will be removed.

You may not leave school during the day without informing your tutor. If you are ill and cannot find your tutor, you should see the Director of Sixth Form, Head of Year 12 or 13, the Head teacher or one of the Deputy Heads.

You are responsible for your money and valuables. Try to maintain a pleasant, tidy environment in the tutor

bases. Eating is strictly prohibited in the Library or Sixth Form Study Room.

You may not, under any circumstances, bring alcohol, any classified or potentially dangerous substance or object onto school premises.

Mobile phones must be switched off during lesson times. Phones which ring during lesson times will be confiscated by any member of staff.

Sixth Formers are required to sign the school’s Internet Code which emphasises responsible use of this facility in the school for educational purposes.

We expect Sixth Formers to be prepared to be involved in the life of the school and there are several events during the year when we will need the help of every member of Year 13 and 14.
