My association with Christian Brothers High School, from the first time I attended and graduated in 1969, through the 15 years that I had children in the school (1990-2005), and now on the Board of Trustees, has been rewarding and enriching. As a student, it was a wonderful place to go. The Brothers and teachers had a significant influence on me. And, as great as the school was then, it has become even better now. The addition of young women to the student body in 1990, the growth of the school, academically and spiritually, and its continued dedication to the Catholic, Lasallian mission make it the wonderful and nurturing place that it is today.

In the six years that I have served on the Board of Trustees of Christian Brothers High School, I have seen a number of milestones occur at the school. Significant among them are the completion of the field house and the groundbreaking for the performing arts center. Wonderful things are happening and I wholeheartedly believe CB provides the best possible environment for young people as they prepare for success in collegeand beyond.

The principal obligation of the Trustees of Christian Brothers High School is to monitor the performance of the president. During my tenure on the board, this task was made all the more easy because of Lorcan Barnes. The school could have no finer representative in terms of leadership, character and dedication. We are blessed to have him serve as president.

It was a privilege to serve the Brothers alongside the phenomenal men and women of the Board. I will miss it and I will miss them.

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends:

What a fantastic time to be at Christian Brothers High School! Our students continue to excel in academics, the arts, athletics and service and our faith community is flourishing. An exciting addition to our campus is underway with the construction of a new performing arts center (see page 5) and the incoming freshman class is shaping up to be our largest in at least eight years.

In March, CB welcomed a panel of educators for a three-day visit as part of our Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC) and Western Catholic Education Association (WCEA) accreditation. The visit, which marks the culmination of more than 18 months of collecting and compiling data, is filled with classroom visits, and meetings with parents, students, faculty and staff. In the end, the panel prepares a report and makes a recommendation to the accrediting agencies as to our school’s accreditation status. We were proud when the WASC executive director said that he regretted that his own five children did not have the opportunity to receive a Christian Brothers High School education. As one of four pilot schools for the new Ensuring Educational Excellence process, we were not sure what to expect, however, based on the fact that we received the highest possible ratings in all categories, and additional comments from our visitors, I expect, when we are notified in the summer, that CB will once again receive the highest accreditation status.

Providing students with programs and facilities that allow them to explore and develop their gifts is essential. The arts teach students important life and career skills essential to success in the 21st century including communication, team work, creativity, discipline, self-confidence and commitment. Further, our new performing arts facility will benefit all students and the entire school community, as it will also be used for class liturgies, visiting speakers, alumni, parent events, and the like.

Yet, I’ve always believed that school buildings are just buildings. The critical components are the 1,000 students who fill the rooms and the dedicated faculty and staff who minister and teach. The unique, inclusive community that is Christian Brothers High School is blessed with ethnic, economic and spiritual diversity that truly prepares our students for life in college and beyond.

I’m proud to report that at its February meeting, the CBHS Board of Trustees unanimously approved a budget which includes $2 million in tuition assistance for the 2013-14 school year. In doing so, we ensure our steadfast dedication to the principles of the Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle and the Brothers of the Christian Schools who continue his efforts to provide an excellent, faith-based education to young people – especially the poor.

I’m grateful to all who have contributed to the performing arts center project, tuition assistance, and the Annual Fund. Your generosity allows us to continue the 137-year tradition of teaching and caring for young people. Those of you who have not yet joined in our efforts, I encourage you to help us make a difference in the lives of young people today and in generations to come.

Morning rain did not dampen the spirits of attendees at CB’s performing arts center groundbreaking celebration. Guests included a number of benefactors, more than a few excited parents and students, Friends of the Arts, City Council Member Jay Schenirer and County Supervisor Phil Serna ’86. As if on cue, the sky cleared just an hour or so before the drum corps signaled the start of the event. Br. Donald Johanson, FSC, shared the invocation which was followed by brief speeches from President Lorcan Barnes, Principal Mary Hesser, four-year choral music student Kaalen Kirrene ’13, and Director of Media, Visual and Performing Arts Ron Slabbinck.

This important project has been years in the making. In the late 1990’s, school leaders created a 15-year master plan to expand and galvanize the CB campus. In 1999, the school launched the Building on the Tradition Campaign that raised funds to build the Science, Math and Technology wing. The SMAT wing's location on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. affirmed CB’s commitment to academic excellence and continued presence in the Oak Park community.

CB publicly announced its Building on the Tradition Campaign – Phase II with the grand opening of the athletic field house in 2008. The primary components of Phase II are constructing the field house and the performing arts center and growing the educational endowment. Thanks to the generosity of early and enthusiastic

donors, the $4.5 million cost of the field house is paid in full and the endowment has grown to $8 million. Of the $6.6 million total cost of the performing arts center project, a total of $5.8 million has been secured, with a final $800,000 remaining.

“We had hoped to build the performing arts center as soon as we were done with the field house,” said Barnes. “Unfortunately, the campaign slowed with the recession. Fortunately, we had not overcommitted ourselves financially. Today, I’m proud to say that CB is debt free and we are committed to completing this project without taking on external debt. We are working hard to raise the final $800,000 in donations and I believe that the Christian Brothers community will support this endeavor as they have every campus improvement over these past 137 years.”

Last summer, crews removed the small theater and relocated the library to the technology center to make room for seven beautiful new classrooms that comprise an international language wing. The downstairs area of Brother Bertram Hall formerly occupied by Campus Ministry was renovated to become the new home of the Guidance and Counseling Center. In February, clearing and site preparation work began on the northeast corner of campus.

On April 4, CB officially broke ground on the new facility. “We have come together to seek God’s blessing as we set apart this ground for the building of a performing arts center,” said Br.

Barnes then announced that the building will be named the George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center and that guests will enjoy performances in the 350-seat Thea Stidum Theatre.

“Thea and George are model philanthropists and two of the kindest people I have ever met,” said Barnes. “They take joy in giving. They love the arts. They support our tuition assistance program. They are passionate about ensuring young people have access to an outstanding education. We are blessed and grateful to Thea, George and to everybody who has supported this project.”

“CB is the place to be for area visual and performing artists. With eight choral groups, three annual theater productions, eight visual arts courses, eight instrumental performance groups and three annual art exhibitions, students enjoy numerous opportunities to discover and develop their God-given artistic abilities,” says Principal Mary Hesser. “I’m so happy that we will have a facility that allows them to fully showcase their gifts.”

“Although I won’t be here when the performing arts center is finished, I’m proud that I was a part of a program that helped inspire support for the facility,” said Kaalen Kirrene ’13. “I’m grateful to Ms. Stidum and Mr. Cunningham and all of the donors for their support and look forward to watching my brother and sister perform on the stage.”

“I’m really looking forward to the new performing arts center,” says violinist Finn Whetstone ’15. “I believe it’s really going to help our sound and I’m so thankful to all the donors for their generosity in helping the arts programs at CB.”

“We have really wonderful art and music programs,” says cellist Antonia Hagelis ’15. “It will be nice to have a theatre that allows us to showcase our work.”

“I am in the choir and participate in the drama program,” says Maura Tomassetti ’15. “I really think this new building makes a statement that Christian Brothers really values the arts.”

“This is a great day for all of our artists, past, present, and future,” enthuses Ron Slabbinck, director of media, visual and performing arts. “We are so grateful to the Friends of the Arts, the school administration, and the generous donors who have made this celebration possible.”

“The George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center will be a facility commensurate with the talent of our students, the dedication of their parents, the passion of our teachers, and the generosity of our donors,” says Barnes. “I’m really looking forward to taking my seat at next spring’s musical in the Thea Stidum Theatre.”

Campus Life ~According to a recent New York Times article, the competitive nature of college admissions continues to expand as students are applying in droves to increasing numbers of schools. College Admissions officers must, due to the sheer number of applications, become more selective. This selectivity gives applicants additional cause to be more competitive, and, year after year, increase the number of colleges to which they apply. This cycle has led to a record-number of applications at colleges and universities across the nation. Fortunately, a number of CB seniors have already received letters of early acceptance from a number of prestigious colleges and universities.

Seniors Receive College Admissions Letters

After several years’ hiatus, CB’s Academic Decathlon and Robotics Teams restarted with eager students and enthusiastic faculty moderators. Academic Decathlon moderators, science/math teacher Holly Keller, and assistant, English teacher, Mary Bowers, took on the herculean task of preparing students to compete in the 33rd Annual Sacramento County Office of Education’s Academic Decathlon. Danny Delgado ’79 assembled a motivated group of technology enthusiasts to form the Robotics Team.

For the Academic Decathlon Team, numerous hours of academic preparation on the theme - Russia – and scrimmages leading up to the big event definitely paid off with a ninth place out of 21

high schools. What makes this more impressive is the fact that several high schools make this contest their main event with some schools even having a course in their schedule. Team CB earned three medals (two silver and one gold) and a team leader award! Congratulations to medal winners Dana Kimball ’14 (Gold), Kevin Camacho ’13 (Silver) and Ted Datanagan ’14 (Silver). A special thank you to teachers Steve Barsanti ’78, Scott Coyner, Mike Hood, Findlay McIntosh, Dale Milton and Ron Slabbinck who also helped the students prepare.

CB’s Robotics Team traveled to Elk Grove where they placed seventh overall out of the 16 participating teams. Although this was their first-ever competition, the team enjoyed great camaraderie with opposing schools and learned a lot about strategy and building techniques. Delgado ’79 says the future looks great for his CB High Flyers as 12 of its 14 members are freshmen and sophomores who are all excited to take the lessons in assembly and programming into future robot construction and competitions.


Arts ~

Under the direction of video production teacher Brendan Hogan ’95, CB’s KBFT student news producers and film makers earned two first place awards for News Commentary and Music Video at the Student Television Network convention in Los Angeles in March. Nearly 3,000 students and teachers from 180 schools across the country were in attendance and the competition was tight. Alex Daly ’13, Brianna Pressey ’13 and Ethan Schanberger ’13 took home first place in News Commentary for the second consecutive year. First place Music Video went to Lucas Dudley ’14, Jenner Chapman ’14, Kate Houston ’13 and Justin Cappello ’13. Honorable mention in Sports Highlights went to Nicole Skow ’13 and Hunter Rappleye ’13.

“These students continue to amaze me with their creativity and technical excellence and I am grateful that we are able to provide them with the staff, facilities and equipment that allow them to pursue their interests in film and news production,” says CB President, Lorcan Barnes.

“I was incredibly proud of all of our students at this competition,” says Hogan ’95. “They participated in a number of timed competitions. They basically had three hours to write/film and three hours to edit. The pressure is intense. All of our KBFT teams finished their assignments on time and produced fantastic work. It’s exciting for me, as a teacher, to see our budding journalists and filmmakers as they hit their stride among their peers.”

KBFT #1 in the Nation!


CB’s talented actors journeyed through the Gospels of Matthew and Luke in the

fall production of Godspell. The house was full throughout the show’s sixx-performance run at the New

Helvetia Theatre, CB’s temporary home while construction is underway on the performing arts center.

Making way for construction of the performing arts center necessitated removal of the school’s temporary classrooms and relocating the Counseling and Guidance Center. Last summer, CB removed the small theater and relocated the library to create seven beautiful new classrooms that comprise the international language wing. The downstairs area of Brother Bertram Hall formerly occupied by Campus Ministry has been remodeled as a new home for the Counseling and Guidance Center. On March 19, Father Francis Murin was kind enough to bestow special blessings on each of the classrooms and also the Counseling and Guidance Center.

Christian Brothers High School enjoys a rich tradition of athletics. Over the years, Christian Brothers’ athletic programs established themselves to be among the areas most competitive. In the 1940’s, the CB baseball team, then known as the Gaels, faced off against rivals like Sac High, Elk Grove and El Dorado at their home diamond in William Land Park. Players included familiar names like Knezovich, McNamara, Slakey, Urbano, Valine and Zanze. With America at war for a number of years, the roster of coaches changed somewhat regularly and included

Br. Bertram, Roy Misfeldt and John Gianonni. It also, for a time,

included Victor Vesci. Vesci, an avid lifetime baseball lover, went on to run a successful business, raise a family and live a long and full life. When he passed away in 2009, his widow, Phela, knew that she wanted to do something to commemorate his love of baseball that would also help young people. In 2012, Phela contacted Christian Brothers High School to see if there was something she could do to support the baseball program. After speaking with Assistant Director

of Advancement, Nancy Smith-Fagan, who consulted with the school’s athletic directors, a plan was set in motion. Phela had decided to donate $100,000 toward converting a vacant portion of the field house into a cardio and core conditioning room. The money was to be used to

purchase new cardio-training equipment and exercise equipment. Best of all, the new facility would benefit more

than the baseball team, it would enhance the strength, agility and safety of all student-athletes, improve the health and well-being of all students, and ensure that all 28 varsity

teams are in top physical condition when they take to the court or the field.

Donors at the 2013 Christian Brothers Auction added a phenomenal $38,000 to Phela Vesci’s generous gift.

“This new and improved facility will benefit virtually every student at Christian Brothers, and will continue to have a positive impact on student health and fitness for many years,” says CB President Lorcan Barnes. “In grateful recognition of Phela’s generous gift, the facility will be named the Victor and Phela Vesci Fitness Center in honor of this esteemed former CB coach. We look forward to its completion this summer.”“I’m so glad that I’m able to honor my husband and support the students of Christian Brothers High School with this gift,” says Vesci. “It is a joy to know that it will make a difference.”

A Ferris wheel, quilt show, locomotive, water tower, and a John Deere tractor helped set the mood as the field house and Ron Limeberger ’53 Gymnasium were transformed into an era of innocent fun in a simpler time at this year’s annual auction, State Fair. A record-setting 420 attendees enjoyed a midway of fun and fantastic silent auction items in the field house before moving to the gym for dinner and the live auction. In total, the event raised a phenomenal $215,000 to support a variety of student programs including $12,000 for tuition assistance.

This year’s Fund-an-Item bidding raised $38,000 to convert a vacant portion of the field house into a cardio and core conditioning room and upgrade equipment and flooring in the weight room. Starting off the donations was Bernie Church ’62 who pledged $10,000 on behalf of The La Salle Club. The facility will benefit athletes and students for years to come.

“An event of this magnitude would not be possible without the generosity, hard work, incredible creativity, organizational skills and dedication of our amazing auction committee and Nancy Smith-Fagan, assistant director of advancement,” says Lorcan Barnes,

Annual Auction a Big Hitpresident. “They have been hard at work since last summer to ensure a successful, fun-filled event. Their efforts coupled with the generosity of our sponsors, donors, attendees and volunteers will go a long way in supporting Catholic, Lasallian education at Christian Brothers.”

To achieve this award, the cumulative team grade point average for the entire academic year must be 3.25 or greater. CB is one of only 51 schools in the country to win this award for both the boys and girls teams. This is an outstanding achievement and is a reflection of the dedication and hard work put in by these phenomenal student athletes.

In 2012, CB Jr. Falcons Youth Football and Cheer (CBJF) took flight with an inaugural season that far surpassed expectations, and established the program as a premier organization in youth sports. Thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers and a generous donations of seed money from The La Salle Club and others, CBJF rosters included 80 players and more than a dozen cheerleaders.

The program, which operates independently of Christian Brothers High School, is designed to familiarize players and cheerleaders who are planning to attend CB or have family ties to the school with CB football system and approach to cheerleading.

“More and more high school sports are establishing feeder programs,” says CBJF President, Ken Garrett. “They are the standard today. This is a great way to get kids started in football and cheer and to get them familiar with the CB playbook and nomenclature. Ultimately, we want this to be a true feeder program and prepare these future Falcons for success at Christian Brothers High School.”

Launching the program involved assembling a group of motivated volunteers including Garrett, youth coach Mike Marengo, Sean Stone ’84 whose experiences as a player for CB inspired him to get involved, and CB parents Ross Peabody, Rick Hart, Hugh McGee, Rick Gormley ’74 and Marty Clark ’89. Together the group built the program from the ground up, talking it up at open house events, visiting area parochial schools, setting up a website, establishing a board of directors and working with Sacramento Youth Football to ensure they adhered to all of the rules and regulations.

“It was important to all of us that this program embody all that CB is about,” said Sean Stone ’84. “If we couldn’t do it right in 2012, we would have waited until we could do it right in 2013. Three of our four teams advanced to the playoffs and two of our players were selected to go to Orlando as members of Sacramento’s All-Star Team,” enthuses Stone. “But, the success of the program really begins and ends with CB’s varsity coach, George Petrissans. He was amazing throughout the entire process and season.”

“When I took over the football program at Christian Brothers in 2011, it was clear that the most successful programs in the area had equally successful youth football programs,” said George Petrissans, CB varsity coach. In order for us really become a top-tier football program, we needed to launch a successful feeder program. I can’t say enough about how the entire board came together and used their strengths to get this program off of the ground.”

“I’m an optimist by nature, and I thought we’d be good,” says Garrett. “But, I had no idea we’d be this good. Everybody came together and used their strengths to help build a great program,” says Garrett. “I can’t say enough about President Barnes, Jill Bennett, Kenny Kirrene ’78 and the entire staff at the school for their support. Even the custodians and grounds crew worked really hard to make sure that our home games were a wonderful experience for our teams and opponents. This was a great team effort and we’re building on that for next year.”

Alumni Dinner ~

Christian Brothers alumni have 137 years of tradition, friendships and countless memories to celebrate. And celebrate they did as more than 400 alumni, family and friends attended the 43rd Alumni Dinner on Saturday, February 2.

The evening’s program included the awarding of Golden Diplomas to the Class of ’63 at a pre-dinner celebration in recognition of 50 years having passed since graduation. The honorary alumnus award was presented to Kevin Ralph, father of Eddie ’10, Jamie ’12, Kellen ’15 and future Falcon, Kendall. Although he is a graduate of Woodland High School, Kevin and his wife, Jill, are a CB family. Jill cheered for CB for four years during her high school years at St. Francis High School, and her mother, Linda Giese ’59, is a Bishop Armstrong alumna. The Ralphs have been very active in the Lasallian Parent Ambassadors and the Falcon Athletic Volunteers. Since Eddie’s freshman year in 2006, Kevin has been a fixture at CB football and basketball games volunteering consistently for all assignments related to staging a game. Wherever he goes, Kevin naturally and gladly serves as an ambassador for CB.

giving back to Christian Brothers, was presented to alumnus, Tim Johnston ’68, for his many years of service and dedication. Johnston has been a longstanding active member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, serving as president in 2007. In his tenure with the Alumni Association, Tim served on the Wine, Beer & Food Extravaganza Committee, the Alumni Dinner Committee and the Senior Grad Week Committee. Tim often volunteers to assist with other class’s reunions. He can always be counted on to flip burgers, organize volunteers, sell raffle keys, or any other things needed to get the job done. He is the proud parent of four CB graduates, Cullen ’98, Jered ’04, William ’06 and Maxwell ’10 and is strongly committed to giving back and making a CB education possible for students regardless of family income. To this end, he is a representative for the Class of 1968 Scholarship Fund effort to provide tuition assistance to a

CB student. He has been a sponsor of the Alumni Dinner as well as a donor to the Auction.

“Tim is a generous contributor of his time, talent and treasure,” says Rick Pires ’79, CB Alumni Association president. “CB is a better school because of his contributions and I was honored to present him with the 2013 Alumni Service Award.”

The La Salle Club welcomed eight new members into the ranks of its Coaches’ Hall of Fame this past October. Honorees at the 18th annual celebratory dinner included Paul Gonzalez, Stan Harms, Tom Murphy ’58, Pat O’Brien, John Rankin, John Volek, Jerry Weinstein, and Tami Yasuda. CB director of communications, Kristen McCarthy, received the Ron Limeberger ’53 Award for service in recognition for her ongoing support of The La Salle Club.

McCarthy, who began working at Christian Brothers in 2007, was surprised and honored to receive the award. “Working with The La Salle Club members is such a joy for me,” says McCarthy. “Their love of the school and devotion to its athletes and athletics programs are inspiring. And, while I never had the honor of meeting Ron Limeberger ’53, receiving an award named for him is a tremendous honor and I’m very grateful.”

The La Salle Club was started in 1939 to provide support to the athletic programs of Christian Brothers High School. Legend has it that the club began at a local watering hole with the passing of a hat while commiserating a painful loss to Sacramento High School. The tradition of supporting CB sports continues as the club raises funds each year with membership drives and two recognition dinners.

La Salle Club Celebrates Area Greats

Al Franzoia ’39 began attending Christian Brothers School in 1930, as a fifth-grader. “We lived at 16th and B streets, and the boys would stop by the house to pick up my brothers (Andrew ’35 and Joseph ’37) and me and we’d all walk together,” reflected Al in a 2008 interview.

The “boys” as he called them, included the likes of CB legends Adon Panattoni ’35, Bob Fouts ’39, Archie Crossland ’39, Wally

Westlake ’39, and Ray Cordano ’39 just to name a few. “I walked home every day for lunch and after school the boys would stop by and my mom would give us all a snack. I was the mascot for the baseball team, which actually meant that I got to shag the balls that were hit into the cemetery and I played on the school’s B-team in basketball. We had a lot of fun in those days.”

In 1949, ten years after graduation, Al met Denise Desmond (St. Francis High School Class of ’47) at the YMI Easter Monday Ball. Two years later they were married and together they lovingly raised four sons and two daughters – Al, Jr. ’70, Tom ’71, Michael ’72, Mark (Yogi) ’74, Linda (St. Francis ’77 and CB

cheerleader) and Suzie (St. Francis ’78). During Al, Jr., Tom, Michael and Mark’s time at the school,

Al and Denise devoted countless hours of time volunteering and helping organize parent socials and special events. Denise served on the CB Board of Regents. Al was an active member of the Brother Hoods and seven of their 14 grandchildren attend or have graduated from CB. Several more hope to be Falcons in the future.

Professionally, Al enjoyed a 55-year career with the Sacramento Rendering Company. He was a longstanding member of The La Salle Club and loyal volunteer at St. Mary's Church. In 2007, Al and Denise were recognized by St. Mary Parish for their many years of dedicated service.

“Al and Denise were two of the most loyal, consistent supporters of Christian Brothers that I have had the pleasure to meet and get to know. Their generosity to the school and deep, steadfast support of the Brothers and our mission earned them the distinction of Ambassadors of the Year in 2008 and it was an honor to present them with that award,” says CB President Lorcan Barnes.

Longtime CB teacher and coach, Joe Gill ’63 used to say “I’m not lucky, I’m blessed.” Looking back on his career, marriage and family, Joe was right.

A prolific athlete who attended the University of San Francisco on a baseball scholarship, Joe Gill ’63 joined the faculty at Christian Brothers High School in 1970 for what he thought at the time would be a temporary job.

“He definitely didn’t plan on staying for more than a few years,” said wife, Janet. “But, he really cared deeply for the students. Christian Brothers was a family and it became our family. Brother Edward was his mentor and friend. He was also godfather to our youngest son, Eddy ’00. Whether he was teaching or coaching, it was important to him that the kids really think.”

“I definitely owe Joe my professional career,” says varsity baseball coach Rich Henning ’78. “He taught me to throw a slider that enabled me to play professional baseball. More importantly, he taught us the importance of hard work and he really cared about his players deeply, both on and off the field.”

“As a teacher, Joe really challenged us to think beyond what everyone else was thinking,” reflected CB science teacher Danny Delgado ’79. “We couldn’t just slide by, there was always a challenge. I’m sure that’s why I teach the way I do now. I want my students to be critical thinkers. I believe that’s a gift he left behind; he was a teacher and a mentor to a lot of us.”

Throughout his tenure, Joe served for three years as athletic director (he had one free set each day to get the job done), coached 14 years of basketball including several championship teams, and took over the varsity baseball team in 1993 through 2006. Although his former team rosters include an NBA player and several major league baseball players, his greatest satisfaction came from the simpler successes.

“The joy for me was working with people,” said Joe in a 2007 interview. “Teaching them baseball, some values, how to work hard for things and to keep going when things aren’t going your way. That was special.”

Gill was also grateful to have the opportunity to coach his four sons Tom ’93, Steve ’95, Danny ’98 and Eddy ’00. “The highlight for me was coaching my boys,” said Joe.

“Joe was proud that he was able to coach our boys,” said Janet. “But, he was sure to treat each of them like they were just a team member. There was no favoritism and everyone had a fair shot.”

“Joe would never take the credit,” says Janet. “If a student did well on a test, it was because he or she worked hard. Not because Joe taught a good lesson. If a team won, it’s because they worked hard, not because Joe was a good coach.”

“Coaching was his passion,” said Janet. “First, because Jack Witry was his high school coach, he did everything that Jack did. Then, he read every book he could find on basketball and baseball. We even had to buy a special VCR so that Joe could watch games frame-by-frame.”

Joe was named CB’s Lasallian Educator of the Year in 2002. “Joe exemplified the spirit and dedication of St. John Baptist de La Salle and his ministry to educate young people. He was a humble man who really ‘walked the walk’ when it came to integrity and faith,” said CB Principal Mary Hesser. “I would often see Joe in the chapel at lunch, praying and meditating. He devoted himself to his students and his players. He was a holy man and I admired him greatly.”

“Joe had a great sense of humor,” remembered CB President Lorcan Barnes. “My son Jimmy ’12 was fortunate to have him as

a P.E. teacher during Joe’s final year teaching with us. He loved Mr. Gill and we still enjoy laughing about his classic Words of Wisdom recording of The Stuff. More importantly, though, Joe touched the hearts and minds of thousands of students throughout his 39-year tenure at Christian Brothers High School. Whether he was teaching a struggling student the basics of writing an English paper, coaching a player on the fine art of pregame reflection, or sharing the meditative movements of tai chi, Joe cared for his students and they knew it. That is a legacy of which a teacher can be proud.”

“As a family, sports tied us together,” said Janet. “It was always sports and church. I ran the snack bar and baked oatmeal cookies for the players while

Joe was coaching or working as the PAL basketball director. In retirement, Joe became even more spiritual. I think it’s because he had the time. He attended 8 a.m. Mass most days, until he was too ill. He prayed the rosary, although it would take him an hour because he would stop and meditate. He also read the Bible and books on philosophy.”

Joe passed away on February 20, 2013 of congestive heart failure. Janet was, as always, by his side. Although Joe did not believe in luck, some might say that for him, the number 39 was blessed. “Joe taught for 39 years, we were married 39 years and we lived in our home together for 39 years,” said Janet. “We got our four sons through college and we have 10 wonderful grandchildren. It was a great run. I feel blessed that I was able to share in the tribute to Joe’s life. Sacred Heart Church was packed, standing room only. People donated to The La Salle Club in his name and I’ve received cards and spiritual bouquets from so many people. One former player even called me and took me to lunch. I always believed Joe did well because he worked hard. The tribute to his life really showed how blessed he was by all of that hard work and that he really made a difference.”

For the past several years a number of my classmates and I have made it a practice to get together one morning a month for breakfast at

Pancake Circus at 21st and Broadway. We are all retired now but still very close graduates of Christian Brothers High School in the late 1940s when it was located across the street from the restaurant. We talk about our families, our businesses, our vacations, whether the Kings will stay in Sacramento and about old times at CBS. One of the people we usually discuss and will never forget is the late Monsignor Maurice Connor, our Latin teacher when we were students at Christian Brothers.

Connor, an Irish-born native of Dublin, was a scholar with some fairly strong opinions about the educational systems in America and according to Monsignor Connor, very few of us in his class deserved a high school education at that current time being twelve to thirteen years old.

“I don’t know why most of you boys are here,” he would say on day one. “Most of you should be working out in the fields or as apprentices in the trades. Most of you are never going to learn Latin, which I’m trying to teach you because Latin is the scholarly language of the professional and I doubt that any of you are going to be doctors or lawyers. You are farm boys and you should be out working, not attending high school. After a few years of hard work, a few can proceed to higher education if you show some promise.”

I was one of those who Monsignor Connor particularly singled out in these observations. I was not a good student when it came to Latin as Monsignor Connor was. He was not only a professor of Latin; he was the chaplain at Christian Brothers and the authority on canon law for the Diocese of Sacramento. He studied extensively

in Rome after graduating from the seminary in Ireland. He was a very talented and intelligent individual.

When my friends and I attended Christian Brothers, Monsignor was about 40 years old. He was short with a roly-poly build and had the calm and clear complexion of the Irish. When we encountered him striding down the hall in that graceful way that he had, he would often give us a pinch on the back of the ear or on the back of the neck.

He would always take out his rosary during testing and once I inquired what he was praying for and he answered, “I pray that at least two or three of you will pass this test.”

One day he said, “You’re the very one who shouldn’t be here, Melarkey. You’ll never learn this language; you should be out in the fields working.”

I was working then, but not in the fields.

“I am working as a delivery boy for the pharmacy,” I said. Almost every day, five to ten doctors would come visit our soda fountain and I would make them a dish of ice cream. They would counsel each other about cases and write prescriptions. They would hand them to me and I would take them to the pharmacist.

“None of the prescriptions are written in Latin. They are written in English,” I said to Monsignor one day.

“I don’t believe you, Melarkey,” he said. You’re one of the very ones who should be in the field.”

The next day I brought a few used prescriptions with me to school and showed them to him. He was stunned speechless to discover that the prescriptions were not written in Latin after all and became irritated by my insolence. I told him that I intended to be a veterinarian. Not surprisingly, he looked at me and shook his head.

“Veterinarians all have to know Latin, too, Melarkey,” he said. “You’ll never make it.”

He was right about one thing; I never became a veterinarian. I graduated from state college and attended dental school at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. When I moved back to Sacramento, I would often see Monsignor Connor waiting for a bus on 21st and Broadway to get to work. I would always stop and give him a ride in my 1959 Ford pickup truck to his office under the cathedral.

One day he asked me, “Melarkey, what do you have this truck for?”

“I have property around town and I’m always painting and fixing up houses.”

“But how do you make a living?” “Monsignor, I’m a dentist.” “By God, I don’t believe you are. Are

you licensed?” “Yes Monsignor, I am.”“Well, where did you go to dental

school?”“I went to Creighton University.”“My God, another Jesuit misfit.

Leave it to them to graduate you and contaminate our social order.”

Years later, Monsignor was taking his evening walk around school when a group of boys assaulted him. They broke his jaw, shattered several of his teeth, stole his money and left him against the side of the school in the bushes. The next day, Br. Bertram called me and explained what had happened and asked “Pat, can you fix him up?”

I said, “Of course, no problem.”Six months later, I had him in good

shape. His jaw was healed and he had a fresh set of dentures. Three years after that disaster, I was driving him to work again when he said something that I will never forget.

“Melarkey,” he said striking his breast, “I was wrong about you. I am truly sorry. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa.”

Michelle LaSala ’98, race director of the California International Marathon, shares her experience at the Boston Marathon:

2013 was my sixth Boston Marathon and I had never been more excited to run in the race. It is my favorite marathon, hands down. My fiancé and I were both competing and were so lucky to be back in our hotel room when the two bombings occurred. We could see the first bombing and immediately all the people running and the emergency vehicles arriving to the scene. We were very scared and shaken up, but with time, were able to locate our friends we had traveled with and others we knew who were running in the race. We were also so grateful to get back to Sacramento safely. This tragic event has left me devastated, saddened,

angry and inspired. Devastated that innocent people died on Patriot’s Day in Boston, a day known for its excitement and thrill. Saddened that runners’ biggest fans, their friends and family who support them through months of training and who travel to the finish line to see their runner’s moment of triumph, were the target. Angry that the pure sport of running was attacked so maliciously, so insensibly, and so disgustingly. And, inspired by runners and non-runners alike in this country. By all the marathoners who bravely took their final steps down Boylston Street, by those who stopped to help the suffering, by those who ran well past the finish line and straight to the hospital to donate blood, by the police, the emergency response teams and the loyal and brave Boston Athletic Association volunteers who ran toward the danger and not away from it, and by the people

who drove around the city giving stranded runners a ride and opening their homes to people who had nowhere to go. In a sport I know so well, I have found inspiration from something I never would have foreseen to have an inspiring outcome. I am so proud to be a runner and so thankful for the outpouring of support the Sacramento area gave to us while we were in Boston.

Although he’s retired after a long and successful career with the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, ron rojo ’72 stays very busy as a member of the CB Alumni Association Board (he recently served as chair for the Alumni Dinner) and helping his wife, Lori, with her newly opened bakery, Sugar Mama’s in Carmichael. The bakery, which opened in October, specializes in everything from cookies to wedding cakes and even gluten-free treats. Sugar Mama’s even provided the tasty desserts for the Alumni Dinner. Rojo is also busy keeping up with his daughter, Brittany Rojo ’11, and her recent swimming success (see the alumni update regarding Brittany (on page 38).

CB’s Director of Admissions, Kenny Kirrene ’78, has been named Santa Claran of the Year by the Santa Clara University Sacramento Alumni Chapter. The award will be presented at a special dinner in May.

dan Schiele ’80 enjoyed a brief stint as acting police chief for the City of Sacramento while the department underwent a search to hire a chief. Schiele, who currently holds the rank of deputy chief, plans to retire in May.

phil Serna ’86, a self-described “shy kid” in high school, has definitely come out of his shell as a member of the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors. Although he lost his first election, that of junior class president, Serna takes his role on the non-partisan board very seriously. Elected in June 2010, Serna represents District 1 which extends from the Sacramento-Sutter

County line throughout 96 percent of the City of Sacramento. Serna credits his father, former Sacramento mayor, professor and activist Joe Serna, Jr., and his stepmother, Isabel, with instilling in him the importance of helping others. Isabel was also instrumental in Joe’s decision to attend Christian Brothers High School. “My stepmother was an activist like my father,” says Serna. “She pushed the hardest for me to go to Catholic high school because it was important to her that I obtain the best available secondary education. And, she was right. Looking back, I’m really grateful to Joe Gill ’63 and Br. Dan Morgan, FSC, for introducing

me to great literature and helping me develop a love of reading. That was essential through my college years and stays with me today.”

Serna, who completed his undergraduate studies at CSU Sacramento, earned a master’s degree in city and regional planning from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, says that his education serves him well as much of his time is dedicated to municipal and countywide services. These include land-use issues, health and social services such as mental health, adult and child protective services, public safety, flood protection and caring for the American River Parkway.

He is also busy serving on a number of other boards and commissions including Sacramento First Five Commission, Sacramento Regional Transit, Sacramento Area Council of Governments, Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District and Sacramento Solid Waste Authority. His service with Sacramento First Five inspired him to establish a Blue Ribbon Commission on Disproportionate African-American Child Deaths in Sacramento County. In May, he will present the commission’s findings to the Board of Supervisors. In the meantime, Serna enjoys having

the opportunity to serve. “The best part of my job is the people,” he says. “Helping a constituent with an issue is definitely what I enjoy the most. I don’t really consider this my office, it is an office that I temporarily occupy. I hope that I can maintain that opportunity to serve and will work hard to continue to do so.”

Samantha malone Cook ’95 (Jennifer Malone while at CB) formed a national non-profit organization: Hacker Scouts. Hacker Scouts are dedicated to the advancement of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) education and skill building through youth programs. Founded in Oakland, the group is opening programs all over the country, and one is opening this month in Sacramento! The Hacker Scouts Guild is a weekly scouting program for older children (8 and up) who are ready for more complex skill building and a focus on their individual goals while building relationships within the community. After graduating from medical school, Brandon valine ’97 completed a pain medicine fellowship at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Dr. Valine, who works as an anesthesiologist, recently returned to the area and is living in Southport.

patrick harbison ’98 suspects that CB’s alphabetical class schedule and strictly enforced dress code may be the secret recipe to breeding the perfect man. Or, it most certainly seems that way as for the last four years a Christian Brother’s alumnus has won the title of “Sacramento’s Most Eligible Bachelor.” harbison, eric dietz ’00, matt ruggerio ’00 and most recently, alex hesser ’99 have swept the title since its inception in 2010. The contest, put on by two popular local blogs GirlsontheGrid.com and Harbison’s

PWeekly.com, has become wildly popular around Sacramento, bringing all types of young local professionals together for a fun, but equally important cause. Each year the blogs partner with local non-profit, WEAVE (Women Escaping a Violent Environment) to help raise funds and supplies for women getting back on their feet. Hesser currently works as a social studies teacher at Justin-Siena High School (a Christian Brothers school) in Napa where he is also the social studiesdepartment chair. His status as “Sacramento’s Most Eligible Bachelor” did not last long as Eric Dietz ’00 is engaged to marry Megan Bates. The wedding is scheduled for June 29 in Sacramento.

Kaley matthews ’06, laine himmelman ’06, and lexi dhaliwal ’08 traveled to Nicaragua in March with seven other volunteers from Sacramento Habitat for Humanity on a Global Village Trip to build homes. The group spent nine days in Masachapa, Nicaragua, building a house from the ground up for a family in need.

During her time at USC, Lauren has worked as an intern on the Tom & Jerry DTV production, Scooby Doo Mystery Inc., helped make flash animations for U.S. Olympic promos, an animated Disney Channel commercial, and several animated commercials for McDonalds and Kellogg’s Pop-Tarts. She is also freelancing as an iPhone app artist.

St. Mary’s College of California Rugby began its season ranked number five in the nation by Rugbymag.com thanks in large part to a number of CB alum

natalie reyes ’09 graduated from UC Davis in March. She earned her bachelor’s degree in American Studies, with an emphasis in environmental justice. She also received a minor in U.S. History. Natalie is currently working as a volunteer coordinator at the Sacramento Children's Museum. She is hoping to return to school in a few years to earn her MBA with an emphasis in non-profit management.

Since graduating from CB, Brittany young ’09 has taken her KBFT skills with her to SFSU and the red carpet! Brittany’s path along the red carpet began in 2011 when she won a reporting contest through Good Day Sacramento. Since then, she’s traveled the world interviewing the biggest names in Hollywood for “Mark at the Movies!” Brittany furthered her education in the television industry by interning at E! last summer and for Warner Brothers in the fall. Brittany graduated a semester early from SFSU and is ready for lights, camera, action!

In February, Samantha Schumann ’10 began a six-month study abroad program in Frankfurt, Germany. Samantha’s parents enjoyed an Easter visit including a stop in Reims, France, birthplace of St. John Baptist de La Salle. studying athletic training. While in Germany, she is working with the Frankfurt Galaxy, an American football team.

Katie hoekman ’10 earned American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Pacific Region honorable mention accolades for her efforts during the 2012 season. This is the first time in her career that Hoekman has taken home this honor. Hoekman, a first-team All-WCC selection for a second consecutive season, paced the Torero offense with 294 kills, while hitting for an impressive .389 clip, and she led the team in blocks with 123, 21 of which were solo. In WCC action, Hoekman was second on the team in kills with 179, while hitting for a .386 clip and as she led the team in blocks with 84. Hoekman, who took home one WCC Player of the Week award this season, was selected to the All-Tournament team at the USC Tournament and at the USD Tournament.

Brittany rojo ’11 was one of four Cal State East Bay swimmers to qualify for the 2013 NCAA Division II Championships. The women are the first Pioneers to compete at Division II Swimming and Diving Championships since 1992. With just two months of collegiate swimming under her belt, Rojo got on track quickly, setting new personal bests in nearly every event she swam at the Pacific Coast Swim Conference (PCSC) meet leading off the 200 free relay and swimming in the A Finals of the 100 and 200 fly. Rojo is also now the Pioneer record holder in the 200 fly.

abby Williams ’11 says her time at CB continues to make a positive impact on her life. First, her VENAVER service trip to New Orleans was a key factor in choosing to attend Lafayette College in Pennsylvania and selecting her double major in policy studies and neuroscience. Abby interned for a disaster relief organization this past summer and hopes to run FEMA in the future. Second, in November she had the opportunity to be one of the political analysts on PBS as a part of an elections broadcast class. Abby was one of few underclassmen in the class, and her broadcasting experience at KBFT was a big reason why she was allowed to enroll in it. She produced a pre-taped segment which was worth 35% of her class grade. She says her time at Girls’ State, Girls’ Nation, and in Mr. Meegan’s AP US History and Government courses made her interested in politics and gave her the confidence to fill the role of an on-air political analyst.

John hallsten ’12 had a fantastic first season of fencing at University of Notre Dame. Hallsten placed second to a sixth-year senior in the Midwest Individual Championship. He won the Midwest Section NCAA Individual Championship. The Irish finished their season ranked second in the nation, just 10 points shy of Penn State. All-in-all it was a great season for Hallsten, with much more to come in the future.

la salle art Exhibit – Thursday, May 16

More than 50 student-created works of art will be on display at the 21st annual La Salle Art Exhibit. The event, held in Br. Bertram Hall is scheduled from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and features paintings, photography, sketches, ceramic pieces and more.

11th annual Hollywood Bowl Choir Concert – saturday, May 18

Pack a picnic, grab a blanket or some lawn chairs and join us at 7 p.m. for some festive choir performances as the school’s Main Lawn is transformed into the Hollywood Bowl.

Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation – friday, May 24

Baccalaureate Mass will be celebrated at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament at 9 a.m. Graduation is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Memorial Auditorium. Tickets are required for entry to these events.

Wine, Beer & food Extravaganza – friday, september 6

CB’s Alumni Association is already hard at work on 2013’s Wine, Beer & Food Extravaganza. An impressive variety of wine and beer, food and friendship all combine to make this the largest social event of the year.

Holy Bowl XlIII – saturday, september 21

Fans, please put on your Falcon blue as Christian Brothers faces off against its athletic rival and, partner in Catholic education, Jesuit High School. Games are tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m. (freshman), 4:30 p.m. (junior varsity) and 7 p.m. (varsity) at Hughes Stadium.

ClaSS of ’47 – The class of 1947 is having its 66th reunion dinner May 4th at Aviators Restaurant at the Executive Airport. Bill Brennan is chairing the event which begins at 4 p.m. with a social hour, and dinner follows at 5 p.m.

ClaSS of ’53 – Roger Caetano (rscaetano@ att.net) and Tom Colby ([email protected]) are organizing a reunion to be held at Christian Brothers High School. Tom and Roger are surveying classmates to identify the best date for everyone this fall.

ClaSS of ’63 – Celebrate the Golden Anniversary of your graduation with a weekend of fun October 11th and 12th. The weekend kicks off with an informal cocktail party at CBHS on the evening of the 11th, and wraps up with a dinner at Arden Hills Country Club on Saturday, October 12th. Christian Brothers High School earned a place on the Washington Post’s 2013 list of “America’s Most Challenging Private High Schools.” Author Jay Matthews has been ranking the most challenging public and

private schools in the country for 15 years using an index formula that compares the number of college-level tests given at a

school with the number of graduates that year. Also noted are the percentage of

students who come from families that qualify for lunch subsidies and the percentage of

graduates who passed at least one college-level test during their high school career,

called equity and excellence, (E&E). This is the first year that Christian Brothers has been included on this prestigious list, proving once
