SQUARE ONE OLDER ADULT CENTRE
MEMBERS’ NEWS
We are delighted to bring you this short
update on Centre happenings.
This Spring heralds some exciting changes to
our Centre, with new programs, new trips, and
a new neighbour, as The Open Door charity
moves in on May 1st. (For more information
about this anticipated relocation please see
the April 2013 Letter to OAC Members
currently available through the Administration
Office.)
Be it ever so humble, there's no place like
home, as the familiar tune goes. Here at the
Centre we're anticipating an active Spring
and Summer as we prepare for needed facility
renovations. We know that many of our
members regard the Centre as their Second
Home. Many have been with us for years and
have benefitted greatly from our facility's
activities, services and programming, as well
as forged new friendships, aided others while
volunteering, and perhaps even "found their
voice" through creative pursuits or
participating in our numerous variety shows,
musicals and dances. If you are one of the
many whose life has benefitted from your
association with our Centre, here is your
opportunity to give back through our “Buy a
Brick” Renovation Campaign. For more
information, please see enclosed letter/
donation form and consider giving generously
as we build a better Centre together.
“Never doubt that a small group of committed
people can change the world. Indeed, it is
the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret
Mead
As we’ve just finished celebrating National
Volunteer Week across Canada, and more
specifically within our Centre, we extend a
heartfelt Thank You and a “tip of the hat” to
the 185 volunteers at our two sites. On behalf
of the many OAC members and staff, we are
indebted to your extraordinary and ongoing
contributions – both large and small. You keep
our facility functioning effectively and provide
a welcoming smile, a strong arm, a friendly
voice, and a sharp mind. We simply could not
be without you!
Don’t miss out on the many exciting events this
season! In May, Beyond Ballroom, Fashion
Week, and our 7th Annual Variety Show are
sure to get your body moving and your feet
tapping while ensuring you look your best.
Seniors’ Month (June) promises to please the
palate as we participate in a BBQ at nearby
Chartwell Classic Robert Speck. Our Indoor
Garage Sale, Walters Family Theatre day trip,
a Strawberry Social, and the All That Glitters
Jewellery Sale are also highlights of the
jam-packed month!
Last, but certainly not least, SOOAC’s AGM is
scheduled for Thursday, June 27th, and all
members are invited and encouraged to
attend. Free lunch tickets for the AGM are
now available on a first-come first-served basis
through the Admin Office. There are plenty of
interesting Board positions available, so please
consider putting your name forward this year.

RRRECENTECENTECENT EEEVENTSVENTSVENTS Everyone had a fabulous time at our
Chinese New Year’s Celebration on
Friday, February 15th. We had 114
members and guests attend, with a lucky
coin toss and a scrumptious 10-course
meal. The afternoon's entertainment
included a 15-piece Chinese orchestra,
dance and Chinese breathing
demonstrations, as well as line dancing
and Karaoke. Our “Light for Luck”
fundraiser added colour to our hallway
throughout January and February. I hope
all of the wishes came true!

Mystery Unveiled!
Wondering what the mystique is about with the
October 18th Mystery-a-thon? This year, our annual
walk event has a new twist! Rather than walking
throughout the mall, we are having a Fit-a-thon, to
be held in one convenient location – the
Auditorium. This event is appropriate for all fitness
levels and is a great opportunity to try some
specially selected fitness options! Themed costumes!
It’s fun to dress up in costume, whether with a team
you put together yourself or just come solo!
Costumes are optional, but there will be prizes for
the best team costumes and also the best solo
costume! Top fundraising prizes! Watch for more
details to come!
