Growing in Grace is a faith-based, age-appropriate music curriculum that nurtures children spiritually while they sing, play, and move. Songs are written with singable texts, memorable melodies, and engaging accompaniments to inspire and appeal to children. Musical activities make learning a fun, hands-on experience, while colorful visuals bring to life musical and spiritual concepts.

Fruit of the Spirit is based on Galatians 5:22-23. Through songs and activities, children experience what it means to grow and live out an authentic, joyful faith. Children learn to follow the Holy Spirit as they develop godly character and become rmly rooted and grounded in Christ’s love.

This 15-week curriculum package contains two discs with demonstration and accompaniment recordings, full scores, abundant thematic resources, and intuitive directions to guide children in becoming creative musicians. Additional resources are available online at www.growing-in-grace.com.

    Early-Arriver Activity

    Feed the Birds KIDPage

Introduce “Cut the Cake”• Display the cake drawing on the wall or a table, and place crayons nearby.

    • As children finish their KIDPages, invite them to color icing and candles on the cake.

    • Play Demo 16 as children color.

    • Tell children they will learn to sing and play “Cut the Cake” in the weeks to come.

Large Group 1• Play Track 37 (“Growing in the Spirit”) to signal Large Group.

“Growing in the Spirit”1. Review Theme Poster and Theme Song.

Teaching TipThe song and the sign language were taught in the Fall semester. The Spring teaching steps are enrichment ideas for reviewing each fruit of the Spirit. If your choir did not learn the song in the Fall, refer to pages 1-3 of the Teaching Steps.

    • Display the Theme Poster and lead children in naming each fruit of the Spirit.

    • Guide children to understand that fruits grow from seeds planted in the ground, but the Bible tells us about fruit that doesn’t grow on trees. Read Galatians 5:22-23 from the Bible—“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

    • Play Demo 11, and sing. Point to the vignettes on the Theme Poster during Section B. Review sign language, if desired.

Teaching TipGo to www.celebrating-grace.com/GrowingintheSpiritSignLanguageVideo to review the sign language demonstration.

º I am growing—Place left hand in front of body, palm facing in. “Hide” right hand behind left hand, then bring it upward slowly while spreading fingers

º in the Spirit—Form an O with your left hand in front of body. Touch right pointer finger and thumb together and place inside the O, then move right hand upward, as if pulling a string from the O

º Growing to be more like—Touch all four fingertips of right hand and left hand together

º Jesus help me—Place praying hands in front of body

º grow more like—same as I am growing

    º You—same as Him

“A Friend Who Loves Like Jesus”1. Introduce Quiet-to-Loud-a-Gator.

    • Display the Quiet-to-Loud-a-Gator, and demonstrate opening and closing its mouth.

    • Have children copy as you stretch your arms out in front with palms together and parallel to the floor like an alligator’s mouth. Open arms up, speaking alligator four times, using a little louder voice each time. Bring arms slowly back together, speaking alligator four more times. Use a quieter voice each time.

    2. Speak words from the song.• Echo speak the words in measures 13-16, matching the dynamic markings. Tell children these

words are part of a song they will be learning.

    Teaching TipThe dynamic markings are:

    p—quiet

    P—moderately quiet

    F—moderately loud

    f—loud

The crescendo marking - means to sing louder gradually.

    • Play Demo 1, and have children listen for the quiet-to-loud part of the song (meas. 13-16). When they hear it, have them open up their arms like a “gator mouth” as you open the mouth on the Quiet-to-Loud-a-Gator.

    • Play Demo 22 (“Come, Thou Almighty King”), and have children walk with their friends to Activity Groups.

    • D—Circle the Sounds

Large Group 2• Play Track 40 (“Come, Thou Almighty King”) to signal children to return to Large Group.

“I Will Choose to Obey”1. Stretch arms and feel the beat.

    • Have children copy as you stretch your arms out straight in front and move them up and down together.

    • Continue moving down and up to the steady dotted-quarter-note beat, saying I in the down position and choose in the up position.

    • Play Demo 2, and continue the steady-beat motion.

Teaching TipThis motion will prepare the children to move the parachute in the same manner in Step 4.

    2. Discuss choices.• Display the Bible with four of the Bible Pulls extending from the pages.

    • Choose children to pull the Bible Pulls from the Bible. Read the description on each Bible Pull, and allow time for discussion.

Teaching TipGuide children to understand that we should always obey what God wants us to do.

    • Play Demo 2, and have children count the number of times they hear I will choose to obey. (6)

    • Echo sing each phrase in Section A. Ask children which two phrases were the same. (1 and 3)

    • Sing Section A with Demo 2.
