RESURRECTION LUTHERAN CHURCH 100 W. Lochmere Drive Cary, NC 27518

919-851-7248 WWW.RLCARY.ORG

A warm welcome to all worshipping with Resurrection Lutheran Church today. This May, Resurrection celebrated forty two years of ministry. Celebrating our Savior’s love continues today in the faithful gathering of God’s people, whether we are together in God’s house or as you watch online from the comfort of your home. The Lessons and Liturgy Today Scripture teaches that there is One God. It also reveals that God is Three Persons in His One Being. In the waters of Holy Baptism, we are permanently bound into the Holy Trinity. We invoke God’s Triune Name when we gather for worship. We confess the Triune Name of God in the text of the ancient creeds. In our worship, we celebrate the Triune God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Our Triune God has graciously planned for our salvation. In His wisdom, God has taken into account our sin, provided a plan to win salvation for us by grace, and has delivered it to us through faith in Jesus Christ. God has carefully revealed to us this New Life in Christ; and empowered us, through the Holy Spirit, to live a life reflecting the calling we have received.

GREETING OF PEACE

All are invited to greet one another in the name of the Lord, saying, “Peace be with you,” as a sign of reconciliation and of the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. (Matt. 5:22–24; Eph. 4:1–3)Any gesture accompanying this greeting (wave, hand over heart with slight bow, or handshake) is welcome.

INVOCATION The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.

P In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P Blessed be God the Holy Trinity and the undivided Unity. C Let us give glory to Him because He has shown us His Mercy. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, Who is Faithful and Just, will forgive our

sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C

Most Merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the Sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your Will and walk in Your Ways to the glory of Your Holy Name. Amen.

P Almighty God in His Mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His Sake forgives you all your sins. As a Called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His Authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Almighty and Ever-Living God, You have given us grace to profess our true faith in

You as the Eternal Trinity; and to worship You as One God – powerful yet merciful, glorious yet gracious. Keep us, we pray, strong in this true faith and worship; and

defend us from all those opposed to Your Will. For You, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, live and rule, one God, now and forever.

C Amen. OLD TESTAMENT Genesis 1:1-2:4a

(The Creation of the world through the power of the Holy Trinity.) In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty,

darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness He called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. And God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water.” So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. God called the expanse “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day. And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters He called “seas.” And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day. And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs

to mark seasons and days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day. And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky.” So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day. And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds.

Page 7: 06 07 20 TrinityAc737ff9915e1b598d2fc-e32112b90576f81fb605f467a66c2c19.r17.cf2.rackcdn.c…Thy sacred witness bear In this glad hour! Thou, who almighty art, Now rule in ev’ry heart,

7

And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created man in His Own Image, in the Image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.

And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so. God saw all that He had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on the seventh day He rested from all His Work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it He rested from all the work of creating that He had done. This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created.

A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE Acts 2:14a, 22-36 (Jesus is David's son and David's Lord.)

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a Man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through Him, as you yourselves know. This Man was handed over to you by God's set Purpose and Foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put Him to death by nailing Him to the cross. But God raised Him from the dead, freeing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on Him.

David said about Him: "'I saw the Lord always before me. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in Your Presence.' "Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.

Page 9: 06 07 20 TrinityAc737ff9915e1b598d2fc-e32112b90576f81fb605f467a66c2c19.r17.cf2.rackcdn.c…Thy sacred witness bear In this glad hour! Thou, who almighty art, Now rule in ev’ry heart,

But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that He would place one of his descendants on his throne. Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the Resurrection of the Christ, that He was not abandoned to the grave, nor did His Body see decay. God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact.

Exalted to the Right Hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. For David did not ascend to Heaven, and yet he said, "'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at My Right Hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."' "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, Whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."

(Jesus gives us and His disciples the Great Commission with the promise that He will be with us always.)

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-eighth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to Me.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I Am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

A Very Important “Therefore” Holy Trinity Sunday (Matthew 28:16–20)

A seminary prof once said this about the self-serving abuse of human authority, especially as it relates to the pastoral office: “A pastor’s use of authority to get his way is a lot like soap. The more of it he ‘uses,’ the less he has.” Jesus’ use of authority is different. Jesus’ authority, “all authority on heaven and on earth,” serves the mission of God in which we, the disciples of Jesus, take part. There is nothing to fear! In Christ Jesus, the Triune God is on our side.

I. On Holy Trinity Sunday we reflect on our _______ God, One in Three Persons a. The Christian faith may indeed be “all about Jesus,” but the Scriptures show us

what we need to know about one God revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit b. There is power in a name! The name of the Triune God, spoken in our baptism,

connects us to the original creation event where all three members of the Trinity were present. The Creator of the universe is at work for us and through us.

c. There is power in a name! The name of the Triune God, spoken in our baptism, connects us to the inauguration of Jesus’ ministry in His baptism, where all three members of the Trinity were present. Our work as the baptized of God is where Jesus continues to be active and present in the world.

II. Jesus, the Son of God, has received all __________, on heaven and on earth (28:18) a. During His earthly ministry, Jesus has already demonstrated His mission by

forgiving sins with authority (9:6); today, by His authority, our sins are forgiven! b. As crucified and resurrected Lord of all, Jesus has now received all authority and

brings such to bear on the work of His Church…to make disciples. III. “All authority” of God in the cosmos and the ________ of the ______ on earth are

brought together with an easily overlooked word: “Therefore” a. What do we fear? That our personal budget won’t cut it? That our

circumstances, our call to teach and baptize, that Jesus’ command that we love God/one another is too difficult a task?

b. Our mission as a church and all authority given to Jesus are connected! “All authority on heaven and on earth has been given to me; therefore, go….”

c. There is nothing to fear! Not even the divisive role of politics or emotional reactions can get in the way of our mission to the world together!

IV. What does all authority, given to Christ yet present with the baptized of the Triune God “to the end of the age” as we go about God’s mission look like?

a. What might the Holy Spirit change in the way we do church for the mission of God to be more intentionally at the heart of all that we do together?

b. What might the Holy Spirit change in you and me to involve us in that mission?

Page 12: 06 07 20 TrinityAc737ff9915e1b598d2fc-e32112b90576f81fb605f467a66c2c19.r17.cf2.rackcdn.c…Thy sacred witness bear In this glad hour! Thou, who almighty art, Now rule in ev’ry heart,

CREED Excerpts from the ATHANASIAN CREED Whoever wants to be saved should above all cling to the Christian faith. And the Christian faith is this: we worship one God in three Persons and three Persons in one God, neither confusing the Persons nor dividing the Divine Being. For the Father is one Person, the Son is another, and the Holy Spirit is still another. But the Godhead of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is all one: co-equal in glory, co-eternal in majesty. What the Father is, the Son is, and so is the Holy Spirit. So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. And yet They are not three Gods, but one God. Thus the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, and the Holy Spirit is Lord. And yet there are not three Lords, but one Lord. As Christian truth compels us to acknowledge Each distinct Person by Himself as God and Lord, so the Christian faith forbids us to say that there are three Gods or three Lords. The Father is made of none, neither created nor begotten. The Son is of the Father alone, not made nor created but begotten. The Holy Spirit is of the Father and of the Son, neither made nor created nor begotten but proceeding. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits. And in this Trinity no One is before or after, greater or less that the Other; but all three Persons are in Themselves, co-eternal and co-equal. And so we must worship the Trinity in unity and the one God in three Persons. MUSICAL OFFERING
