BEGINNINGS OF WAR• George Washington initiates conflict along with FFVs in

Ohio River Valley (1754)

• Initial two years on undeclared basis - finally expands into global war

• Britain calls inter colonial meeting in Albany (7 of 13 colonies send delegates) - Albany Congress, flimsy attempt to keep Natives on their side and unify the colonists

• Join or Die = Ben Franklin, of course

• Colonists want greater freedom, Britain wants them to have less

UPS AND DOWNS FOR BRITISH

• Edward Braddock - 60 y.o. British general who leads unsuccessful attacks in western Virginia and Canada

• Washington tries defending the west with 300 men - incredibly successful.....(heavy sarcasm)

• William Pitt (the Great Commoner) takes command of British

• Launches series of successful attacks on French Canada

• Battle of Louisbourg, Quebec (1758), Montreal (1760) - three battles and British victories that effectively throw France off the continent

END OF WAR BUT ORIGIN OF COLONIAL TENSION

• 1763 - Treaty of Paris - France gets New Orleans, Britain gets Florida, and Spain gets Cuba

• Contempt emerges between colonists and British regulars

• During war, colonists kept trading with Spain and France

• With France out, the colonists saw little reason to rely on France

• Pontiac's Rebellion (1763) - Ottawa chief leads violent campaign to drive colonists out of Ohio Valley - 2,000 colonists killed at Detroit

• Proclamation of 1763 - British prohibition of settlement west of Appalachians - ostensibly to protect colonists, but really to control - Colonists disregard Proclamation
