Ald. Chantia Lewis Announces Candidacy for U.S. Senate in WisconsinOne day after Lt. Gov, Mandela

Barnes announced his intentionsto run for the U.S. Senate, Mil-waukee Alderwoman ChantiaLewis announced her candidacyfor U.S. Senate in the state of Wis-consin. Flipping the swing seat, currently held

by Republican Senator Ron Johnson, is criticalto holding and expanding Democrats’ majorityin Congress.“As a local elected official, I’ve seen first-

hand how decisions at the federal level impactus in Milwaukee and throughout the state,”said Lewis. “I understand the need to have a voice in

Congress that speaks for regular people whoare not being represented by Ron Johnson

right now. “I’m running on behalf of every working

class person in Wisconsin, every parent raisingtheir children through a pandemic and everyveteran who is struggling. “There’s a whole lot of people who are feel-

ing a whole lot of hurt, and I am in this racefor them.”

Lewis proudly served our countryalongside heroes in the UnitedStates Air Force before returninghome to keep her mother’s smallbusiness afloat during her battleagainst cancer. In 2016, Lewissuccessfully ran for Milwaukee’sCommon Council where she has

brought economic development to herdistrict and sponsored or cosponsored

over 300 pieces of legislation. Learn more about Lewis in her launch

her state and constituents. She is proud to be the first Black female

Senate candidate to have a Black female cam-paign manager and Black woman heading herconsultant team.

PERSPECTIVESPERSPECTIVES

Weekend observations:Thank God it's Friday. Days seem to get shorter the older

you get. As such, I've learned tocombine activities; to optimize mytime…When I decide to cut the grass after

work, I do so as a form of exercise. Despite my disabilities, I cut our

quarter-acre yard with a push mower, even though I had to stop and recoverfrom the pain in my legs and feet sev-eral times. I completed nearly 6,500 steps. It

seemed like 65,000.Keeping me distracted during my

exercise session, I noticed two birdsland at the edge of our pond. Severalminutes later, another set of birds ofa different variety landed a few yardsaway. I continued mowing, eventually re-

versing my track when I noticed two

ducks in the pond, one slightly largerthan the other, implying differentsexes. It dawned on me every animalenters a marriage of sorts, most forlife. It used to be that way in the Black

community. In fact, immediately after emanci-

pation and the 13th Amendment,80% of Black households wereheaded by a married couple.By the 1960s, it was down to 50%.

Today it is 30%.The chains of poverty linked with

welfare and sparked the evaporationof morals. In Milwaukee, the loss of industry

prompted a tripling of the unemploy-ment rate in the Black community. The fact that welfare required the

man to leave home was also a signif-icant factor, as was the structure ofthe welfare state, which 'rewarded'

poor Black women for having morebabies for more significant subsidies, which some called their income.President Bill Clinton, who intro-

duced the nation's most racist crimebill with the support of Black con-gressmen and the Democratic Party, has to shoulder some of the blame aswell.Clinton later carried out the rest of

his neo-conservative agenda by end-ing welfare, shortly after MinisterLouis Farrakhan appropriately ex-plained, “Welfare spelled backward,is farewell---to human dignity andself-respect.”Blame poverty, a dysfunctional

culture, or the sexual revolution forthe current paradigm. Or you canblame the government. Wherever you place the blame at

this point is irrelevant. Today, 70%of Black households are headed by awoman, who is generally uneducatedor undereducated, lacking a culturalor spiritual foundation, and mostlikely trapped in a mind-set I call the'Culture of Poverty.' And, as I explained several years

ago, most of today's Black single-parent head of households don'tknow the difference between beingpoor and being ‘po.’ African American two-parent

households of my era looked atpoverty as a stepping stone, a tempo-rary condition. We were ‘po,’ which was an eco-

nomic—not a cultural—condition. The single most significant indica-

tor is the absence of males in thehousehold, or more specifically, mar-riage as the cornerstone, which notonly provides a cultural foundationbut two incomes. At least the animalsare getting it right. As I was cutting the lawn, my

George (Buddy) Sanders -- a graphic designer and illustrator with the oldMilwaukee Star, and Black Milwaukee community activist -- passed away at90 years of age on Thursday, July 15. A memorial service with military honorswill be Thursday, July 22, at Peace of Mind Funeral Home, 5325 W. Green-field Ave. -- with visitation from 11 a.m-1 p.m.

Personal memories ofBlack MKE’slate, greatGeorge F.(Buddy) SandersBy Richard G. Carter“When other nights and other daysmay find us gone our separate ways,we will have these moments to remem-ber…” The Four Lads (1955)

There was a time when Blackweekly newspapers were rare inthis city. In the post-war 1940s,The Milwaukee Globe -- publishedby my late father Sanford Carter,Vincent Bevenue, Lawrence Saun-ders and John Williams -- was oneof the first. On W. Walnut St. near N. Ninth, The Globe’s was fol-

lowed in the 1950s by the Milwaukee Recorder and Mil-waukee Gazette and, in the ‘70s, by the CommunityJournal and Courier. The iconic Mattiebelle Woods published the short-

lived weekly Recorder and gave me my first newspaperjob as I majored in journalism at Marquette University.

In the early 1960s, The Milwaukee Star – touted as”The Voice of the Negro in Wisconsin -- burst upon thescene as the best Black weekly, an honor later assumedby the Community Journal. One thing that made it sowas the presence of creative art director, graphics de-

keeping the Bucks in Milwaukee a priority, and evencontributed $100 million toward what is now the Fis-erv Forum. We would not be celebrating today with-out his efforts. What makes this championship so special is how

the Bucks have embodied everything that we loveabout Milwaukee: passion, effort, grit, resiliency, di-versity and perseverance. When a team and city con-nect in this way the victory feels even better. As we celebrate this tremendous victory, and are in-

spired by the work the players did on the court, westand ready to continue to collaboratively do the nec-essary work off the court to improve this city.We look forward to the forthcoming parade and

continuing the celebration in the days ahead. Con-grats Bucks!

signer, satirical cartoonist and layout genius, George F. (Buddy) Sanders.I clearly recall the day in 1962 George -- who on July 16 passed away at

age 90 -- walked into The Star offices at 2334 N. Third St.. -- happily joiningJay Anderson (editor), Reuben Harpole (advertising manager) and myself(associate editor and sports editor), after he had just been hired by publisherKen Coulter.Among George’s notable achievements with The Star was designing a

unique front page with a thick black border announcing the tragic, Nov. 22,1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy, with a haunting photo ofthe martyred President. We got word about the assassination in a phone call from Harpole’s wife,

Mildred, who’d seen a television news bulletin. We had no TV in the officeand were in total shock.

He also laid out our coverage – with a famous Bill Stitt photo -- of ourmemorable January 1964 staff interview of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther KingJr., at the downtown Schoeder Hotel..

In addition, George designed our popular tavern section -- two full pagesof on-scene photos I took of patrons on Friday and Saturday nights at manyof the Black inner city’s crowded drinking establishments, such as TheSavoy Lounge, 700 Tap and 711 on W. Walnut Street.

Over the years, his other creative art-work originals included a largeposter for my 1986 Marquette University By-Line Award at the WisconsinClub downtown, also displayed at an after-party at the palatial 519 W.Brown St. home of my uncle, Calvin C. Moody, ex-police detective andfirst Black Milwaukee County Supervisor, and a poster signed by manypeople at my 1987 Milwaukee Journal farewell party at the downtown PressClub prior to my leaving for the New York Daily News.

One of George’s famous parties was in September 1986 -- a crowdedpicnic in Kern Park on N. Humboldt Ave. Joining my wife, Janice and I inattendance, was Milwaukee Alderwoman Vel Phillips (wearing a tee-shirtemblazoned “Brown Sugar”); Lincoln High football legend Jake Beason;journalist Bill Kurtz and wife, Marge; Milwaukee Journal editorial page ed-itor Dave Behrendt; activist John Givens and family; original Black rhythmand blues historian Richard Berry, and my close pal, long-time New Yorker,Joe Dolan.

Another was his November 1986 Star staff reunion at Jay’s NorthridgeLakes apartment, which Harpole and I attended with our wives – Mildredand Janice. And as dancing flowed to the sounds of 1950s-‘60s Black doo-wop and R&B, so did the liquor – courtesy of George. In June 1992, George and I collaborated on presenting a wildly successful

downtown Varsity Theater “Father’s Day Eve” concert by the originalSpaniels, of “Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight” fame. This was precededby an impromptu gathering of the group, their wives and local Spaniels’fans, in the lobby of the Park East Hotel on E. State St. The concert was followed by a wonderful after-party buffet we all at-

tended at the Givens’ family N. Grant Blvd. home.In 1994 -- years after Coulter’s original Star folded -- George’s creative

artwork again made its mark when he designed billboard displays, en-velopes, stationery and business cards for WNOV-AM radio’s popular, top-rated “Carter-McGee Report” that I co-hosted with Michael McGee Sr.,controversial ex-Alderman. George often was an in-studio and telephonecall guest.George expressed strong views on the news via e-mail to confidantes.

Meanwhile, he and my wife, Susan Orr – former host of “Jazz in the After-noon” on WYMS-FM radio -- became fast friends. After Lincoln High School – which he and I attended years apart --

George was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in combat as a tank ma-chine gunner in the Korean War, in 1950-52, earning medals for bravery. Now, my long-time, great good friend – George (Buddy) Sanders -- has

left us. He passed away in hospice care at the E. Lafyette Place home wherehe resided since 2017 with his long-time friend, Carol Hase. So rest inpeace, Buddy. You now belong to the ages.—Milwaukee native Richard G. Carter is a freelance columnist

to a young teen my son mentored. He would comeout to the house regularly to do odd chores for afew dollars. He would stay to enjoy a meal, con-verse or play board games.I recall the first time my son brought him to our

house. We live in a neighborhood bordering thecity. Where families take pride in maintaining theiryards and property, where you won't find litter onthe streets, and there’s a mutual concern for theneighborhood. The then-14-year-old had never been outside the

boundaries of the central city, and his eyes grewlarge. His mouth dropped open as he took in theneighborhood and our home in particular. He said he had never been in such a nice house,

and the large backyard seemed like something outof a movie. We must be rich, he asserted.Far from it, I explained. We made the decision

to build and dedicated ourselves to that venture. My wife worked in the financial community for

a couple of decades. As such, I commandeered ourfinances to create a savings program that eventu-ally allowed us to purchase the land and providesomething for our children. The money I made from the sale of my book,

'Not Yet Free at Last,' went into the savings. And Isacrificed the emotional 'high' of driving a new car,so I wouldn't have a note. In fact, I've never owned a new car, but my 2006

Z has served the purpose, along with my 1995truck. Yeah, 1995!The young brother, who was always respectful,

well-mannered, and perceptive, had had several runs in with the law and, as a re-

sult, found himself stigmatized and placed in ayouth rehabilitation program. He was an authentic 'product of his environ-

ment.'My son was his program supervisor; but took a

particular interest in the kid and took him underhis wing. Mykel became his surrogate father, fill-ing a void far too many young Black men neversee filled.Under my son's tutelage, the young brother's

grades improved, and his hostility and distrustevaporated. He was on the right path, and I hadhigh hopes for him. He enjoyed visiting and learning and had be-

come a member of our family. His only mistake was attending the funeral of a

neighborhood friend—a junior gangster-in-train-ing--- last year. Standing outside the funeral home, a car sped

by, firing several shots. One took the youngbrother's life. He was 16 years old. Sixteen!Stupid, nonsensical violence. Urban terrorism.

Another lost life. Frequently, when I sit on our porch overseeing

my property, images of that young man come tomind. Had to make a run to Walmart after cutting the

grass. I decided to go to the one in Germantown, along the Appleton Ave. bus line. Nearly all of the Black patrons chose to bypass

two central city Walmarts because they feel saferand find a more extensive selection of merchandisein Germantown. We hate to acknowledge it, but the facts don't

lie: The two urban Walmarts run neck and neck asthe most victimized by thieves in the city. And who would be at fault? Community leaders

and politicians would blame the corporation, attacktheir commitment to the community. But we

would know, if not accept, the truth. Who's toblame? Yep, the Neckbones. As I was exiting my truck on the Walmart lot, I

observed a young sister crossing the parking arealeading to the main entrance. With her was a childof about five-years-old who was playfully runningaround her. As they approached a stop sign several yards

from the entrance, a car pulled up and stopped, itstires making a loud screeching sound. The sound startled the woman, who in turn

turned toward her 'son' screaming in a loud voice,“Get ya mudder forking, black ass out of the mud-der forking street!” The child, who was not in danger, stopped sud-

denly as the woman grabbed him by the collardrawing him to her. She uttered a couple of other 'biblical' words, in-

cluding 'little nigger' (n-word), drawing the atten-tion of the half dozen White and Black folks whowere either entering or leaving the store. To be honest, I was embarrassed. We constantly talk about perceptions of our

tribe, about prejudice and segregation. I could only wonder what the Whites customers

were thinking, what prejudices were solidified.I also pondered on what circumstances the child

was living under and what his future held.I didn't intercede because I traveled that route

before, only to be cussed out by the offendingNeckbone. I could only pray the child had a responsible fa-

ther or extended family in this life to balance whatI concluded was child abuse. My wife and I had gone to the Blues Fest on

Brown Deer on Thursday. It was an enjoyable ex-perience. Ran into many old friends, as the festseemed to attract an older crowd.I'm not a big blues fan, but the artists were jam-

min', and the atmosphere was electric. No violence; not even a hint of weed in the air. The security was made up of young brothers

who were obviously trained to be polite and ac-commodating. I did notice an undercover brother, but there was not a single member of Milwaukee'sfinest wearing a uniform at the festival. The event reminded me of the good ole days

when the community could have fun without vio-lence.On Friday, we took my 88-year-old mother-in-

law (MaDear). She was walking gingerly on hercane up until the music hit her. As soon as sheheard the blues…it was a different story. To mysurprise, she was up and jammin'. Our music has a way of regenerating a person's

soul. Such was the effect on my mother-in-law.I was attracted to one of the booths surrounding

the tent and music stage. The booth was owned by a brother from Sene-

gal, West Africa, and included Africentric jewelryand Motherland clothing. The brother, Moustapha Drame, and I talked at

length about his country, which I had visited withmy late son and a group of other individuals a cou-ple of decades ago. The conversation brought backpositive memories I wished more of us couldshare. I long to go back to the Motherland. I want to

take my family to the Ivory Coast, where our an-cestors came from before some were captured andsent here on slave ships.I have had two DNA tests, the second pro bono

by African Ancestry after I expressed my disap-pointment on social media with my 23 and Me testresults. Combining the two, I have in my veins the blood

of Rameses III of Kemet. Both sides of my ances-try migrated southwest through Nigeria and ulti-mately to the Ivory Coast. I am Fula and Mende. The latter being the tribe

made famous by their escape from the slave shipAmistad. After spending Saturday morning doing house-

hold stuff, I took my grandson to the Blues Fest.He met several people who recognized him as his

father's son. It was an awkward but meaningfulexperience. We stopped by the Khepra Jewelers' booth to

talk with Brother Manuel about making a ring formy grandson that he saw my late son wearing in aphoto taken before his death in an auto accident 13years ago. Ah'meer was in town to attend the Bucks' game

on Thursday. He said he purchased his $400 ticketearly in the playoff season. When he could not geta commitment from a cousin to go with him, hedecided to go by himself.I like the Bucks, but $400? I don’t like them that

much! Particularly given he could have gotten$1,500 for that ticket on game day.We root for players who earn more than the av-

erage township and are unaffected by the life con-cerns we face. But I don't' refer to them as 'my' team because I

don't have ownership in it. I don't own stock.Ah'meer was visiting from Atlanta—the new

Harlem. He observed his former hometown wasmuch more diverse—albeit segregated.Lots of new buildings and downtown renova-

tions. But every time he comes to 'visit,' he recognizes

why Kareem Abdul Jabbar wanted to leave evenafter the Bucks won their first champion 50 yearsago.Culturally, for African Americans, Milwaukee is

still in the stone age.I confirmed what my grandson surmised with a

recent report that declared Milwaukee is the bestcity in the country…for White people. It is the worst for African Americans, based on

seven negative indicators, including the highestBlack male unemployment, infant mortality, seg-regation, and poverty rates. I wish my grandson lived closer. My son, like I,

was a single parent. His mother 'stole' him aftermy son died and moved him to Atlanta. I miss himdearly. But I can understand why he and mybrother chose to live in Atlanta. For Black folks,it's like night and day.Ah'meer enjoyed himself while at the festival,

even though he couldn't relate to the music. Wereturned home in time to see the last three-quartersof the Bucks game. I didn't charge my grandsonfor the experience, and we had a delightful time. After an inspiring House of Grace Kingdom

Ministry virtual church service Sunday morning, Iheaded to the paper to finish up some work. I had a half dozen near-accidents heading to the

paper as I drove down Fond du Lac Avenue. Can'tbelieve cops don't line that 'highway' street to stopthe terrorists. One car that zoomed around me and others on

Fond du Lac and Hampton Avenues traveled at thespeed of light and barely avoided vehicles that hadthe right of way. It seemed to be the exact car Iran into a mile further south involved in an autoaccident. After leaving the office, I ventured to my sister-

in-law's house to help her move items into storage. She, too, is leaving Milwaukee, joining an ever-growing line of folks who decided life was betterelsewhere. Talking with my cousin-in-law as she sorted

through boxes of old items, I learned of a women'shat show her church was hosting in a few weeks.I asked if wigs and weaves would be includedsince I've grown to accept them as hats. I have wondered, however, about the new eye-

lash fad. I recall a sister coming out of a Pick NSave on Good Hope Road whose eyelashes wereseemingly a foot long. I turned around, and shewas gone. I assume she used the lashes to flyhome. After finishing helping my sister-in-law pack

(actually, I primarily just supervised), I headedback home to start this column. All of the aforementioned thoughts were filling

my head, and I needed an outlet. Signifyin' is mymental orgasm.Hotep.
