Once again, someone from the ranks of the

Heralds has stepped up to fill a very important

leadership role.

Due to a recent vacancy, we ended up with the pressing need for a new HERALDS’ ROOKIE PROGRAM MANAGER.

We are proud to announce that Mark Tuttle will now be filling those significant shoes. He brings a

level of enthusiasm and commitment to the job that will guarantee that HoH will grow and improve as new singers are brought “up to speed” in record time. Thanks Mark.

Welcome aboard the leadership team!

Remember — HoH has a February 26th (A printable copy of the concert flyer can be

found in the MEMBERS AREA of our website— filed under Chapter Documents)

Regarding tickets for the Heralds concert at the

First Christian Church of Largo Feb. 26 @ 3:00 PM: Tickets ($10 each) may

be purchased at the church located at 1645 Seminole Blvd. in Largo—

or by contacting Arlene Jackson at [email protected] or calling 727-595-4412.

[Church web site: www.fcclargo.org ]

One of the most personally satisfying and re warding tasks we have is singing Valentines to unsuspecting gals, (and a couple guys) all day on Valentines Day. Seeing the look of envy on the co-workers faces lets you know that it is a gift that really hits the mark. Please let me know if you are going to be able to sing in the Valentines this Feb 14th, it is a Tuesday so you would have to schedule a day off work. (Those of you actually gainfully employed) I will have a sign up sheet at the rehearsals from here out, and will be matching up those who don't match themselves first! Grab three other guys and make your own quartet, early signers get the best match ups. Songs are "Heart of My Heart" and "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" and are on the HoH website. Cost is $50 and includes a valentine card with personal sentiment, a silk rose, and a Polaroid photo or two of the occasion. Usually a quartet will do 10 to 15 gigs in a day, so it's usually 6 or 8 before lunch, 6 or 8 after lunch, bring a spare shirt in case you spill bar-b-Q on your tux shirt. Hand out sheets for advertising and to give to your own acquaintances are forthcoming. If you are going to write me and put your name up please add the part(s) you sing and if possible if you are free in the AM, Afternoon, Evening, or if there are specific hours you can not sing in, and your address, it's nice to get 4 Pinellas guys together, four Citrus Park guys, four Lutzers... saves time getting together in the AM. It's early yet, but many of you probably could get a few reps in after the shows. If you are completely unable to sing but could spend the day fielding phone calls and live in Hillsboro, let me know, our regular Tampa guy moved to Georgia this year. Bryan Kleske [email protected]

HoH Ticket Manager Needed With the impending “retirement” of Don Long, the Heralds will need a new ticket manager to handle sales for the Annual and Christmas shows this year. Don has most graciously offered to help the new manager learn the ropes over the coming months, and urges that someone start as soon as possible. The ticket manager's job is now separate from duties of chapter treasurer which Al Kelly will assume. This will avoid any conflict of interest. This is a critically important job for the Heralds. Our shows produce a very large portion of the revenue the chapter needs to operate. In addition to Don Long’s expert counseling (based on his ten years of service), the ticket manager's task will be strongly supported by an aggressive marketing campaign and possible wider use of the Heralds' website for placing orders. It's work, but there's great satisfaction in coming in contact with many wonderful people who support our hobby. Think you might be interested? Please HELP OUR HERALDS!. Talk to Don, or contact Bob Morrissey.

OUR NEXT REHEARSAL

Tuesday, January 17th at 7:00 p.m.

Show prep for Feb 26 continues!

AND — don’t forget our

weekly afterglow at

Joe Kane of Bellaire Beach was back at

rehearsal again this week! That’s great - but do you suppose he’s stalking us?

Well, even if he is, keep making him feel welcome.

Have you seen what’s on the newest “best-dressed” list? Every Herald gets one, and thus enters the fashion ranks with style and effective impact on potential singers! (If

you haven’t gotten yours yet, look for it at the next HoH rehearsal, and then wear it proudly! (After all, black is so slimming.)

AND - it’s part of Ed Burt’s new membership campaign:

EACH ONE—REACH ONE! He’s challenged every one of us to bring just one new singer into the Heralds’ ranks during 2006. Do-able? Of course! With a wardrobe like

this, along with our winning personalities, we can’t miss. Don’t wait. Recruit somebody TODAY! New emphasis in 2006 at all HoH

rehearsals : Quartet singing.

It’s a blast and it helps us all

become better singers and

get more out of our hobby.

No…. It’s not SANTA! It’s Fred Bjork, and he has just been appointed chairman of the Tampa Chapter's Nominating Committee for 2006. He will be joined by Bryan Hevel and Bob Weber. This committee is responsible for identifying and recommending the HoH slate of officers and At-Large members of the Board of Directors for 2007. Those recommendations are scheduled to be presented to the Board in September and to the chapter for voting in October. Chorus bylaws call for the president to appoint the committee at the start of each year. So — there you are! (Ho Ho Ho)

It was great to have Dave Dillingham back at rehearsal after a long medical leave.

He says he’s still not up to full speed in all ways yet, but he looks good (not handsome, mind you...but decent) and his voice still sounds as

“acceptable” as always. His biggest complaint? The thirteen holes in his manly torso that are

progressively healing. We’re not sure, but he might just be saying that to gain our sympathy. No matter. Even if he’s trying to pull a

fast one on us, it was still good to see and hear him. Come on Dillingham. Pull it together and get back on the risers!

We’ve missed you.

POLYFONIX

Well, we hate to admit it. But, the basses are out in front. No, it’s really not some kind of cosmic convergence or weird fluke of nature. It’s just that

more of them have already signed up to sing in Valentines Day Quartets for HoH than any other of the voice parts. What’s going on here? Has the Bermuda Triangle

somehow been suddenly and mysteriously relocated into Tampa Bay? Anyway - Let’s get with it gentlemen. Bryan Kleske,

our coordinator, can still sign you up for some of the most enjoyable singing you’ll do all year long. AND… you’ll be helping your chapter raise some very important resources and good will around town!

Besides— those guys with the low voices will never let the rest of us live it down. You can reach Bryan at: [email protected]

Downloadable

barbershop

coming soon to iTunes Soon you'll be able to legally purchase thousands of barbershop performances from iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody, MusicMatch, and more! Our Society has recently partnered with Naked Voice Records, LLC (NVR), in a collaboration that will have a profound effect on the availability of barbershop audio worldwide. NVR is a record label owned by barbershoppers (AIC members, in fact!) and dedicated exclusively to the digital distribution of a cappella music. Phase I of the project will make available worldwide virtually every quartet and chorus contest performance recorded at International Contests since 1999 (Anaheim). Initial release is expected in the first quarter of 2006. Over the succeeding months, NVR hopes to digitize and add to the catalog available, all contest music dating back as far as the technology will allow. As you might imagine, old reel to reel tapes from the 40s are rather fragile so a by product of this effort will also be the conservation and preservation of the Society's audio legacy. It is estimated that this initiative will ultimately result in an available barbershop catalog of tens of thousands of tracks! This body of music will join the digital catalog of NVR that is already available through a wide variety of the most popular legal music download services such as iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody, and more. These services offer legal digital downloads and/or streaming delivery of CD quality audio on a piecemeal basis. Apple, as well as Windows based computers are supported both with and without the popular portable players such as the iPod, iRiver, Zen, GoGear, Sony and many more. OUR NEXT REHEARSAL

Tuesday, January 24th at 7:00 p.m.

Show prep for Feb 26 continues!

AND — don’t forget our

weekly afterglow at

Some Special Guests coming to visit HoH -

Ev Nau will visit the Heralds Tuesday, February 7th

to present his proven tips for selling advertising in the chapter's annual show program. Ev will discuss tools and techniques members can use

as individuals or working in teams, and will discuss how computers can help make the job easier. Ev is a veteran quartet and chorus singer, and a compelling coach who helps chapters perform well

both onstage and off. He is a former member of the Society's international staff in Kenosha and is now working as Director of Major Gifts for the Harmony

Foundation based in Chicago. In addition to his 40-plus years of barbershopping and numerous honors, Ev also holds 78 Man-of-Note awards.

Steve Jamison, one of HoH’s previous coaches,

will make a return “appearance” for a session with the

chorus on, Tuesday, March 14th. He will be working with us on our upcoming contest package. This, of course, means we must be totally OFF-PAPER for that session. See the message from our Music Team on

Page Four.

And, speaking of HoH visitors -

Joe Kane and Phil Stern were with us

again last week. They are eager to sing, good natured and seem to have had all their shots. Let’s make them welcome and cheer

them on as they move through the membership process. Thanks for being with us, guys.

Hope you enjoyed it as much as the rest of us did.

HoH Valentines Day quartets are still being finalized. You could have a terrific day singing together with your friends, bringing joy to many unsuspecting victims and

also providing some valuable financial income to your chapter. Com’on… give it a try! Contact Bryan Kleske today: [email protected]

ALSO - FEB. 14 will NOT be our weekly rehearsal night during Valentines’ week. Instead we will meet on THURSDAY, Feb. 16. at 7PM in our usual location.

Also… pick up a supply of Singing Valentines invitations at rehearsal and get them into the hands of potential buyers. Lets’ break our record for delivery’s this year!

Well, it’s not like he’s got enough to do or anything. President Bob was the MC for the Silk City Chorus show up in Manchester, Connecticut on Saturday, January 14th. They had Men In Black, current college gold medalists and Metropolis on the show. This chorus has always been able to get really great acts to perform; a "tradition" that started when our very own Bob Morrissey was in charge of lining up talent. It’s just a real shame that they couldn’t find somebody good to MC their show. And what’s with the uniform? Did he get drafted or what?

OUR SHOW

Greetings from The Academy, Florida Gulf Coast Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. The Academy is trying something a little different, and you're invited. We held our "traditional" annual show in October with a

headliner quartet, Wheelhouse. A very successful show according to all concerned, I'm happy to say. Then we got a call from the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center who asked if we would put on a show at their venue. So I'm pleased to announce a show by The Academy, Featuring the chorus and our resident quartet, PolyFonix.

That's right, a show without a guest quartet, where we can perform pretty much our entire repertoire! And a Sunday matinee at that!

Date: Sunday January 29th Time: 2 p.m. Place: Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center Address: 324 Pine Street (inside City Hall)

Tickets: $13 from the Box Office 727-942-5605 We hope to see you there. If you do come, please come up and say hi after the show! Yours in Harmony, Dave Cross -President, The Academy For more information visit: www.theacademychorus.com

THEIR SHOWS

It was great to have Jeff Lathom visit the Heralds rehearsal recently. And as the current musical director of the Saint Petersburg chapter (The Suncoast Chorus) he shared the exciting news about their 60th Anniversary Show.

It’s coming soon —– March 4 — with two performances (3:00 and 8:00 p.m.) Venue will be the brand new concert hall on the campus of Clearwater Central Catholic High School. Special guests will include current 5th place quartet medalists: OC TIMES

Check out the St. Pete Chorus website: http://www.suncoastchorus.com/index.shtml Show tickets may be ordered from the “ANNUAL SHOW” page.

Jeff’s also shared that they are looking for ushers (6-8 for each show). And our own, Bill Billings will be serving as Stage Manager. If he taps you for some sort of help, be ready to say, “Yep, I’ll help.”

From your friendly neighborhood music team - As was announced at Tuesday night’s rehearsal, here are some important musical dates to note (get it…? note… music… clever, eh? - Oh never

mind.)

RE: “You’re Nobody till Somebody Loves You”

OFF PAPER DEADLINE - JANUARY 31 TAPE ADJUDICATION PASSING DEADLINE - MARCH 7 CHOREO TRAINING WILL BEGIN ON (or near) MARCH 7 GUEST COACHING SESSION FOR CONTEST PREP WITH STEVE JAMISON - MARCH 14 NOTE: when submitting tapes for adjudication, refrain from turning in a recording that you KNOW has multiple errors. Exchange THAT tape with your riser buddy, and work towards producing a tape with 100% words and notes. You may record your performance during one of our weekly rehearsals or at home as you sing along with the playback of a learning track. Direct all your questions about the taping process to Pat Bauer.

See this guy? It’s Ed Burt. Know why he’s smiling? Nope, we can’t figure it out

either. Could be the medication. Or it might be that he’s really excited about the new HoH “EACH ONE—REACH ONE”

membership campaign he’s just started. The goal is to double our current riser population ASAP to make us a better chorus, and, of course… to keep Ed

smiling! So, go get ‘em. Quick, before the meds wear off!

Heralds Newsmakers Well, they’re back. Yes, this foursome headed out to Mid-Winter convention in Sacramento, CA - not as a golf team (If you’ve ever witnessed Dave R on the course, you know that just couldn’t be it!) No, they went to represent our chorus as well as the Sunshine District in the SENIORS QUARTET CONTEST. How did they do? Can’t you just see it on their faces? Isn’t it obvious? They took 22nd place! They went, they dazzled, they dominated! Did we expect anything less? Uhh….. No comment! Anyway - Thanks to JUST 4 GRINS for doing another terrific job of pleasing the audience and being excellent ambassadors of HoH. WELL DONE GUYS! AND - The HoH Bari section has given birth once again! It’s a boy; Joe Kane of Bellaire Beach. He’s the newest Herald and will very soon be eating solid foods and singing tags like a grown up! Congrats to the proud parents. But even more to you, Joe. Glad you’re with us. But just remember - No drooling on the risers!

There’s a whole lotta quartettin’ goin’ on A new trend at HoH rehearsals is quickly becoming a meaningful part of our weekly practice times. Each Tuesday we’ve been spending a few minutes trying some quartet activities. Guys are getting the chance to sing with fellows they’ve never sung with before and we’re all getting to hear some new sounds! Some shocking, some surprising, all just down-right fun. We even get the director to sing once in a while. In coming weeks, we’ll get to hear from some of the registered quartets of our chapter. If you’ve been away awhile, this would be a great time to drift on back and check things out!

OH… the excitement of quartet singing! The Flexible Four (consisting of Steve Matheson, John Johanson, Jim Colvin and Roger McLaughlin) were performing at the Super RV Show at the Fairgrounds on January 20 when they ran across Gary Bergoff, better known as "Radar" on TV's MASH. The quartet was performing for Radar and others outside under a tree when in the middle of the song a bird decided to pay a compliment right on John's head. The quartet continued singing while Steve handed Radar his camera who took Photo number 1 and handed the camera back to Steve who took photo number 2 of Gary. Photo number 3 shows the bird's damage. The song they were singing? What else: "You're nobody till somebody loves you."

- NEWS FLASH - Barbershop Harmony Society to seek

HQ site in Nashville The Barbershop Harmony Society Board at its 2006 Midwinter Convention in Sacramento, CA has adopted a motion instructing the BHS Headquarters Relocation Committee to find an appropriate site for Society Headquarters in the Nashville, Tennessee area. "The Board feels that Nashville will prove the greatest location in which we can achieve our vision of the Society's future," said Society President Drayton Justus. "Nashville's international reputation as `Music City USA' connects our musical art form with many other resources to advance our mission and vision." Strong possibilities for tourism, an excellent business and employment climate, and a transportation-friendly central location were also cited as reasons for the choice. The action comes after four years of national search by a Harmony Hall Task Force and its successor Headquarters Relocation Committee, both charged with evaluating and identifying locations for the Society Board to consider. Nashville, Dallas-Fort Worth, and the Milwaukee-Chicago corridor had been considered finalist locations from an initial list of more than fifteen cities. Although several Nashville-area facilities have been reviewed, no specific site has been selected. "The Board's action Friday directs the committee to bring back a list of options, and a business plan for relocation, including the actual site in Nashville, the headquarters total operational needs, and the staffing to support it," said Justus. An initial timeframe for moving in Spring 2007 is contemplated, although this will depend in part on the progress of a new IT infrastructure installation, and the timeliness of the recommendations and negotiations in securing the best site within the Nashville market. "Our dedicated Harmony Hall staff has been extremely patient through this entire search," said Executive Director Ed Watson. "Some families may choose to not relocate, yet their professionalism continues to drive them to serve our members every day. The Board applauds the dedication and patience shown by our staff during this unsettling period of uncertainty."
