For 2010, the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce is partner- ing with Howard Payne University to throw this spectacular event. Christmas activities will be held at Howard Payne with a beautiful trail of lights across campus all around the festival. This magnificent setting will feature kid’s activities, vendors & non-profit agencies, music, concerts and much more. Plans are being set for the 2nd annualChristmas Under the Stars Festival, andorganizers are getting ready for aspectacular event with fun and activi-ties for all ages.

For 2010, the Brownwood AreaChamber of Commerce is partner-ing with Howard Payne University tothrow this spectacular event.Christmas activities will be held atHoward Payne with a beautiful trail of lights across campus allaround the festival. This magnificent setting will feature kid’sactivities, vendors & non-profit agencies, music, concerts andmuch more.

Christmas activities will also be taking place at the Martin andFrances Lehnis Railroad Museum. Santa will be on hand at the

Kress Depot while a Choo-ChooChristmas and the all new “BusterWorld” will be on display inside themuseum. “Santa’s Train” will offertransport from the Lehnis to HowardPayne campus during the festival.

The annual lighted Christmas Parade will also be a featuredattraction where floats & vehicles will travel through downtownBrownwood.

The Chamber’s MonthlyLuncheon will be Friday,October 15 at the BrownwoodCountry Club from 11:30 AMto 1 PM. The luncheon,which is open to members andguests, will feature an interest-ing program and will alsoinclude door prizes, introduc-tion of new members and acash drawing.

Lieutenant Colonel JetHays is a 1980 Graduate ofBrownwood High School. Hegraduated from Texas A&Mwith a BBA in 1984 and fromTexas Tech with a Masters ofAnthropology in 1995. He isa 2005 graduate of the Army

Command and General StaffCollege.

Hays began his militarycareer in 3rd battalion 112thArmor in Brownwood. Hehas served in the TexasNational Guard, both in activeduty and traditional status for26 years. During this time,among other duties, he hasserved as a Tank CompanyCommander, Tank BattalionOperations Officer,Information Operations GroupOperations Officer, DeputyDirector of Joint Operationsfor the Texas Military Forces,and currently serves asCommander, 6th Weapons of

Mass Destruction CivilSupport Team, a unit thatworks with local, state, andfederal first responders in pro-tecting our citizens fromWMD devices and in identify-ing and advising officials inthe mitigation of unknownChemical, Biological, andRadiological/Nuclear hazards.

Lieutenant Colonel Hayshas served three overseastours, as CORPS InformationOperations Plans officer forMultinational Corps Iraq, as adoctrinal data collector andInformation OperationsSubject Matter Expert forJoint Task Force Horn of

Africa, and as a Liaison andOperations officer for theNordic-Polish Battlegroup inBosnia-Herzeogovenia. Hehas served in more than 60Homeland defense missionsranging from Nuclear Suretymissions, to floods, wildfires,four Hurricanes and tropicalstorms, and more than 30HAZMAT identification mis-sions.

He currently resides inSalado, TX and has a 7 yearold son, Harrison.

The cost of the luncheon is$11 per person to be paid atthe door. Attendees maychoose to

Luncheon to Feature Texas National Guard

Lots of fun activities are in storefor Halloween this year, and therewill be no shortage of spooky funfor everyone. Fall Festivals,Haunted Houses, and good oldfashion trick-or-treating can befound during the Halloween week-end.

•The Brownwood FirefightersAssociation will be hosting theirhaunted house at the Youth FairGrounds Home EconomicsBuilding again this year. It will beopen October 21-23 from 7pm tomidnight and again on October 29-31 from 7pm to midnight. Adults(13 & up) are $12 and kids 8-12are $6.

•The World of Terror HauntedHouse will be taking placeOctober 28-31 from 8pm-11pm at527A Commerce Square.Admission cost will be $8 per per-son and proceeds will benefit A

World for Children. •Victory Life Academy (901

CC Woodson) is holding a fallfestival on Saturday, October 30thfrom 9am-4pm. The festival willinclude pony rides, music, carshow, cake walk, and much more.

•Coggin Avenue BaptistChurch (1815 Coggin Avenue) isholding a fall festival Saturday,October 30th from 5:30pm-7:30pm.

•Early First Baptist Church(103 Garmon Drive) is holdingtheir fall festival Sunday, October31st from 5pm-7pm.

•Trick-or-Treating will takeplace on Halloween night - Sunday,October 3. Austin Avenue Churchof Christ (1020 Austin Avenue) andSouthside Church (1219 IndianCreek) will be holding “Trunk orTreat” events that night as well.

•Brownwood Manor (300Center Avenue) will also be givingout candy to trick-or-treaters onOctober 31, starting at 6 p.m.

National Night Out Builds Community-Police Relationships

Brown County’s first ever National Night Out was ahuge success with neighborhoods across the area partici-pating. The event held on October 5th was designed toheighten neighborhood crime awareness, build better rela-tionships with neighbors, and send a message to criminalsthat neighborhoods are organized.

Local law enforcement officers visited the 39 blockparties across the county during National Night Out. TheBrownwood Police Department, Brown County Sheriff’sOffice, Early Police Department, Brownwood FireDepartment, and Guardian EMS all participated in theevent.

During the month of October, theBrownwood Rotary Club will be dis-tributing a Student Dictionary toevery third grader in Brown County.That means 554 dictionaries will begiven to students on ten campuses inseven towns across the county.According to the club’s DictionaryProject Chairman Larry Podeweltz,“The Brownwood Rotary Club startedthe distributions three years ago andthe response from educators, parentsand the community has been verypositive.” He continued, “It justwarms our hearts to see the excite-ment on the faces of the children aswe show them all the fun facts to befound in the dictionary.”

The project is funded from the pro-ceeds of the Annual Holiday Arts &Crafts Show held the second weekendin November in the BrownwoodColiseum. This year’s show will beSaturday, November 13 and Sunday,

November 14. The show is juried,with the majority of the items beinghand-made by the vendor. Offeringsfrom previous shows included jewel-ry, wood crafts, crosses, pottery,metal sculptures, quilts and denim,salsas, preserves and even goats’ milksoaps and lotions. Show Coordinator,Rotarian Laura Terhune stated, “Thisis a great place to do some Christmasshopping because you can get uniqueitems as well as things that are justnot found in department or discountstores.”

Admission to the Annual HolidayArts & Crafts Show is only $2 withchildren 10 and under FREE. Eachperson who pays admission willreceive a chance to win a 32-inch tel-evision to be given away on Sundayafternoon. In addition, attendees willreceive another chance to win witheach purchase made during theshow—and DOUBLE their chances

lurking over us, a few short weeks afterwards, falls Thanksgiving,and then Hark! Christmas will be here.

The Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 2ndAnnual Christmas under the Stars Festival on December 3rd & 4th.Howard Payne University has graciously offered to be a sponsor byallowing us to hold the event on their campus this year. Thegrounds will be beautifully lit with lights galore, activities for allages, a variety of entertainment, including events at the RailroadMuseum, choir concerts by the HPU choir and others, a “Drum-Off”, arts & crafts vendors, retail vendors, food and beverage ven-dors, the lighted parade, exhibitions and so much more.
