Challenger PTA News – January 2018 - Page 1 of 3 Presidents’ Message Happy New Year! I hope everyone had an enjoyable break. My girls and I loved seeing all the different snowmen. We have a very creative community. The PTA is planning some wonderful upcoming events such as the Scripps Spelling Bee, Festival of Cultures, STEM Fair, Book Swap, and Eager Reader. Thank you to all the volunteers for making these events possible. If you are interested in volunteering, please see our website. Challenger PTA.org We are putting together a PTA nominating committee to nominate volunteers for next year’s PTA board, as well as many committee and event chairs. The nominating committee only meets a couple of times over the next few months, so the time commitment is minimal. Please consider volunteering for this important role or a position on the board next year. We have a lot of fun and provide lots of smiles to our Challenger students and community. Did you know???? There will be three renewal Levies for our Issaquah Schools on the February 13th, 2013 ballot. These are replacement levies - replacing previous voter-approved levies that are expiring in 2018. Like a subscription, local school levies must be renewed or the funding will be lost. Three levies to be renewed: 2 yr. Educational Programs & Operations (EP&O) funds special ed programs, EAs, athletic and extra- curricular activities, nurses and mental health counselors; 1 yr. Bus Levy pays for new buses to replace aging vehicles and improve safety and efficiency; 4 yr. Educational Technology and Critical Repairs Levy (Capital Levy) pays for technology upgrades for each school, plus security and emergency system improvements. Presidents’ Message

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had an enjoyable break. My girls and I loved

seeing all the different snowmen. We have a very creative community. The PTA

is planning some wonderful upcoming events such as the Scripps Spelling Bee,

Festival of Cultures, STEM Fair, Book Swap, and Eager Reader. Thank you to all

the volunteers for making these events possible. If you are interested in

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!!

January 12th The 5th Graders will be hosting a Movie Night at Challenger from 6:30pm to 8:30pm

The movie will be Despicable Me 3 The 5th Graders will get 100% of the money raised at this event!

January 20th

The 5th Graders will be hosting a Value Village Collection Drive at Challenger. A flyer with more information has been sent home.

For every 350 bags that are collected, the 5th Graders will raise around $1,000 for camp!

January 23rd The 5th Graders will be hosting a Hop Jacks Fundraiser Night at their Klahanie location.

A flyer with all the information will be sent home. The 5th Graders will get 20% of your bill when you present the flyer to them at time of purchase.

February 2nd

Parent’s Night Out

Drop Your Kids off and Enjoy an Evening to Yourself! There are 5 upcoming “Parent Night Out” events coming up at Karate West in Issaquah.

2/2, 3/9, 4/6, 5/4 & 6/1 from 6pm to 9pm and dinner is included!!!! The Cost is $35 per kid and 100% of all proceeds from these events will be donated to

Challenger’s 5th graders! Karate West is located at 5828 221st PL SE, Issaquah, WA 98027

At the Festival of Cultures, Challenger Elementary “will go around the world” and learn more about the culture, food, music and traditions of the countries representing the rich diversity of our school. This free PTA event is run by Challenger families for the whole community to enjoy. We still need volunteers to make this wonderful event happen! There are many opportunities to help at the festival, so please sign up here. Please contact Emily Lee [email protected] or Shirley Rullan [email protected] with any questions! Kids Helping Kids - Supply Drive

January 16 - 26th

This month Challenger will be supporting the Humanitarian Outreach project by collecting supplies for kids in South Africa.

Classes are collecting the gently used or new items below. When classes fill their classroom boxes they get a ticket in the

Challenger Ambassador Raffle. The winning class will get to represent Challenger by sending their class picture on a

bookmark with the school’s donations to Africa.

Here is a list of needed items:

Reading books – all types for any and all ages

School Supplies - #2 pencils, sharpeners, erasers, crayons, markers, folders, etc.

Sport balls – soccer balls, footballs, and basketballs, etc.

2018 Golden Acorn

Let’s Recognize Challenger’s Outstanding Volunteers and Educators!

The Golden Acorn Award: is awarded to PTA volunteers who go above and beyond in their service to a school community. The Outstanding Educator Award: is awarded to a teacher or staff member who makes significant contributions that enhance the education of students.

Nomination forms are available in the office or online at www.challengerPTA.org **Please note that previous recipients are not eligible for nomination, check the plaques in the atrium for names of prior recipients**

Please return the forms to the PTA lock box no later than Friday, February 16th.

at the same time!

Our next Box Top turn in deadline is February 23rd so please continue to turn in box tops!

All you need to do is cut them off of the box they are on, stick them in a ziploc bag, write your child’s name and teacher on the bag and send them to school with your

child. Or you can have your child attach your Box Tops to the handy collection sheets with glue or double sided tape. For your convenience there is a

collection box in the office labeled Box Tops. Let’s see if we can fill it up!

The class that turns in the most Box Tops by February 23rd will also be awarded free TCBY Frozen yogurt coupons. So start saving and sending in

your Box Tops today!
