    Presidents’ Message

    Happy February!

Friendship and love are in the air this month, and we would like to extend our appreciation and gratitude towards several exemplary Challenger PTA volunteers who were hard at work over the last several weeks. Emily Lee and Shirley Rullan held their amazing Festival of Cultures on January 26, and the dedication, organization, and effort they poured into the lively and successful evening was incredible. Thank you also to all of the families and volunteers who participated in the Festival - your passion is a huge part of what makes this event such a deeply treasured Challenger tradition.

Prajakta Deshmukh and Bindya Devilal have also devoted a tremendous amount of their time and energy towards bringing the Scripps Spelling Bee to Challenger this year, and under their thoughtful direction, the preliminaries ran flawlessly. We are so proud of the 95 students who participated. Of these 95 students, 39 spelled all the words correctly and are now our finalists! Please join us in cheering these students on at the school’s Spelling Bee on February 9th at 6:00 p.m. in the MPR.

Lastly, we would like to thank Sara Jo Pietraszewski for the dedication she has shown towards all of our children, and for the years she has spent making Challenger such a warm, kind, and welcoming place. We will miss her very much, and wish her the best as she travels with her husband around the world after this school year ends.

The PTA is currently seeking members for our Nomination Committee as there will be many positions opening up on our Executive Board in 2018-2019. If you would like to help choose next year’s board members, please let us know as soon as possible. Our next PTA General Assembly will be on March 13th at 7:00 p.m. in the Challenger Library.

Thank you all very much for your time, and we hope you have a wonderful second Winter Break coming up!

Sincerely, Catherine Miano-Johnson ([email protected]) & Libby Kell ([email protected]) Challenger PTA Co-Presidents

Calling all young scientists! It’s time for the Challenger Elementary annual STEM Fair! All students are encouraged to participate by working on a science project at home, and displaying it proudly at the fair for our community to enjoy.

Mad Science got our students excited about the STEM Fair during the kick off assembly on Tuesday, January 30th. Students have approximately five weeks to work on their own projects at home. They are welcome to do the experiment

with a buddy, sibling or friend from school. All entry forms should be submitted prior to February 19th. To enter, go to our online registration on our STEM Fair website: http://challengerstemfair.oursciencefair.com

Should you wish to volunteer to be a STEM mentor during the day or participate as a sponsor on March 9th, or if you have any questions, please contact the science fair chairs:

Spencer Wise [email protected] or Bindya Devilal [email protected] All students who participate in the STEM Fair will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a week long Destination

EAGER READER IS COMING SOON! What’s Eager Reader? Eager Reader is a voluntary reading program sponsored by the PTA designed to encourage students to read for their enjoyment outside of school. By logging their reading minutes, and receiving a few small prizes along the

way, students have a fun incentive to participate and READ. Plus, those who reach their grade level goal minutes will become “Royal Readers” and receive a free book! We will send more information closer to the program start date (March)

with details on goals, prizes, and logging minutes. Be on the lookout!
