MSW for Working Professionals Program

• Launched September 2008 with 96 students enrolled in first year

• Full MSW similar to on-campus program but tailored to provide academic content on weekends.

• 209 students currently enrolled

• Next Intake: September 2011

• Prescribed academic curriculum includinga Practicum/Internship

• Accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education

Field Education Expectations

• Three components of all field placements that students will need:

I. To experience new learning II. At the graduate levelIII. With a new social work supervisor, who holds an MSW

degree with a minimum of two-years full-time post-degree work experience, for the duration of the placement

Field Education Options for Fields

Placements/Internships• Internal Rotation – students

are to experience new learning with appropriate supervision elsewhere in the organization

• Secondment – students are seconded to a partnering agency for temporary assignment

• Leave of Absence – students take leave from current agency of employment to complete practicum in a new setting

Field Education TermsField practicum tentatively scheduled for the

following dates during the program (a minimum of 450-hour practicum for each) • Advanced Practice Internship Dates: Sept. 2012

Communicating with your Employer

• Ensure your employer has a clear understanding of what is required of a student in the MSW for Working Professionals

• Very demanding schedule• Students are required to

be in class by 3:30 PM on class Fridays

• Understand when you are in your Internship/Practicum

Employer AgreementThe Letter of Support template must indicate that

your employer is willing to accommodate:• You seated in class by 3:30 p.m. on class Fridays• Take leave from current role within agency for the duration

of the 13-week placement (FFP and/or API)• Arrange an internal rotation, secondment or leave of

absence for the term of the Field Practicum/Internship• Complete the minimum of 450 field hours per placement

Admission Requirements

Regular Track Program• Qualifying degree: at least a four-year Honours

undergraduate degree from an accredited university in a relevant field

• A minimum average of B or higher in all undergraduate work• A minimum of three years, full-time, post-graduate work or

volunteer experience in a relevant health, social or human service field

• Successful completion of one undergraduate course in statistics and one in research methods
